Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I have purchased several sweater from Banana recently. 100% merino or silk/cashmere blends. They are good quality, have long sleeves instead of bracelet sleeves and are not too short length wise. If you are looking for solid color sweaters I would recommend checking them out. My items were from the sale section and were 40% off, then an additional 20% and another 10% for cardholders. Also picked up a few pairs of Sloan pants. I should be good for the winter. J Crew can keep their sweater blends that pull and are too short and pants that never fit me right.

    1. +1 on the Banana Republic merino sweaters. Got a few beautiful sweaters with FULL LENGTH sleeves during Friends & Family. Agree with JessF, they are not too short and completely washable.

    2. Shopalot-I have been replacing my Tippi’s with BR sweaters for the past two years. I just can’t stand the exposed wrists/shorter sleeves. When it is cold I want my arms to be covered! It is the same with all the winter and holiday cropped pants! I know BR Sloan’s are technically ankle length but since I am short the regular length is full on me and I can wear them in the winter in PA. I also purchased two silk tops from BR, one of them washable. I was surprised how heavy they were compared to the silk J. Crew has been putting out recently. I am definitely keeping an eye out for more BR silk tops. Overall I guess I am really surprised that all my fall/winter pieces have come from BR and nothing much from J. Crew.

    4. I have ordered merino wool turtlenecks from BR - all wool - staples that J Crew no longer offers.

    5. I also have purchased a sweater from BR. Like shopalot said, they have machine washable one-hundred percent merino right now, although the one I got runs a little small IMO. The price was very reasonable. It is tighter and more fitted than I wanted and expected based on the product photos, but it would be great for layering under other things or pairing with high waisted wide leg pants or tucked into skirts. I agree that J.Crew quality has been an issue for me when it comes to wool and jersey knits over the last several years. Things just develop holes too fast to justify the cost. Gap quality is better on these fronts in my experience but when it comes to wardrobe staples you want to have for a long time, J.Crew does consistently have better designs. Thanks for the tip JessF about the BR machine wash silk. I will keep an eye out also. I do like the J.Crew Cameron pant, but I don't use it often so can't speak to longevity.

  2. +1 Another vote for Banana Republic 100% merino sweaters and also for their Sloan pants! I’ve purchased several in the past two years, always at reasonable prices. The sweaters always with full length sleeves, the Sloans in both regular and long length. I wear the regular length in spring/summer/fall, and switch to the tall length when I need full coverage for winter. I love the weight of my Sloan pants, they’re heavy enough to smooth things over in the tummy area, and feel substantial enough for winter wear but not too thick for warmer weather.
