J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I haven't looked at bathing suits all summer for the most part, as I have many that have only been worn a handful of times over the past five years. We are headed to a warm weather destination and I realized how much I hate the boy short cut of two of my suits that was big a few years ago. Even though a typical bikini shows more skin it's way more flattering. Plus I hate ANYTHING that cuts my butt cheeks and makes the lower bit stick out. Ugh.
So I just ordered two of the nylon pique bikini bottoms and two coordinating tops...too late for this trip but for under $30 I'd rather keep them for next time.

I love some of the new releases but as I'm packing for this trip and choosing my most favorite drapey black pants and tops I'm trying to be more mindful of what I'm buying. Wishlised the embellished fair isle in black. I saw it in person and it's nice, though I wish it was a natural blend with no nylon it felt ok.

    1. Which bottoms did you order? My fear of cheek exposure has made me afraid to every order a suit on line.

    2. Or is that cheek-creep leading to a wedgie?

      Delete
    3. The nylon pique bikini bottoms in red and black. It's not even the wedgie issue, iits more that the boy short type bottom might cover the hips but tends to cut off at the lower butt, leaving my lower torso from hips to crotch looking like a rectangle, whereas a typical bikini bottom even though technically more skin shows, it's a more flattering shape.

    4. @SuzHas, I have such a hard time finding bottoms that cover the butt like you mentioned. I’ve bought the hipster bottoms from the Gap the past two summers in navy and a royal blue. While the colour isn’t a perfect match to my Jcrew tops they were very close and after a few wears you wouldn’t notice at all. They have great cheek coverage. I can’t buy the Jcrew ones.

    5. Jan, I'll check those out. For me I think I need a higher cut thigh, so I think the usual hipsters, as long as they're higher cut are ok. The boy shorts cut across the widest part. I'm going to burn them.

    6. Jan, the hipster would have the same issue, the ones I have from Jcrew are sort of a cross between a hipster and a boyshort. The classic bikini bottom is what I would need. Hopefully the ones I ordered today will work for the next time I need them. If not I'll check out the gap.

    7. Burn them Suz! I too, hate that cut. No no no, no thank you. A higher cut on the leg I much more appealing and too much fabric (anywhere) looks frumpy. Classic all the way! I'm small busted and this summer was very happy with the ponte knit one piece with the grommets and bow at the chest.

    8. I am too, but with my long torso I avoid one piece. I got the French bikini top this summer and that cut is sort of flattering. I ordered two ponte tops, one with cups in hopefully the right size, and another that was cut similar to the French bikini top. Solid bandeau tube tops are ok but more definition seems to work a little better.

    9. Good luck SuzHas, I know it’s hard to find ones that work! My gap ones are the only ones that cover my cheeks the way I like, wish Jcrew would make more coverage in the seat.

    10. And to me another issue is I don't like to try them on in store. I am much more comfortable trying bathing suits on at home.

  2. New holiday arrivals today. Cute fair isle sweaters (wish they had left off the glitter) and tartan everything.

    1. The fair isle sweaters do look cute and they're definitely overdoing the tartan stuff. They used to have such surprising plaids. I wish they'd recruit a new print team.

      Delete
    2. I like the Harley of Scotland sweaters but the synthetic blend sweaters...just no.

      Delete
    3. The same plaids every year - it's a little dull. I already have all of the plaid shirts from previous years.

      Delete
    4. not interested. some items from last year recycled (in case you missed out last year I guess.
new golden deal promo everyday. like I am going to pay $12 shipping for the extra 10% off. gee.

      Delete
    5. A few nice things but so much repetition of silhouettes from last year or earlier in the year. It's too much. Other than a few potential accessory purchases - I am waiting for spring at this point.

      Delete
    6. Ugh. The fuzzy trim on the Stewart tartan lady jacket is too much. Wish they would just do a nice classic style sans crazy trim. I see the same trim on the Mini skirt in Lurex® Stewart tartan - why???

It looks like the Cameron slim crop pant in tartan two-way stretch wool are the same as last year. I really like them.

I want the TIPPI SWEATER IN BLACKWATCH PLAID but it's not expected to ship until Dec. 10 :(

      Delete
    7. Echoing the same. While I enjoy a good holiday plaid it is like they put a bunch of items from the last year or two in storage and brought them out again just in time for the holidays. Boring!

      Delete
    8. Not sure why the “signature tartan” hasn’t appeared yet.

      Delete
    9. Speaking of repetition, when they released the Long-sleeve peplum top in satin-crepe (K2682) a few weeks ago, I thought it was the Drapey crepe faux-wrap top (H2487). I would think if you need to make cuts, this would be it. There's a lot of similar stuff.

      Delete
    10. I'm not excited by any of this. I love plaid, so I think there should be something in this roll out I love or want, but no. Some items are cute, but it just isn't tempting or even my style. I used to buy so much at J. Crew, but I think our styles are parting ways. Maybe it is just too much glitter, lurex, fringe, and 80's rollnecks. How can it be both boring and too over the top at the same time?

  3. Love the Harley sweaters but not for $200.

  4. I like the embellished fair isle sweaters (K5301) but in the close up pics they look a dizzy mess! :(

    1. Agreed. And they would probably keep getting dizz- fuzzier over time.

    2. I saw them in person yesterday. I thought the same about the white fizz on the black but I think it might be the design. I actually liked the black.

    3. I ordered the cashmere mock neck fair isle sweater that's included in the promo. Really happy with Collection cashmere mock neck turtleneck in camel and hoping this one is just as nice.

  5. Has anyone tried the Sherpa lined Chelsea boots? How do they fit? Worth the price? Thanks all!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have them! I find that I have to go down 1/2 size in boots - normally a size 6 in shoes but I got a size 5.5 and they are still plenty big. They are nice and warm although the sherpa does not line the entire inside of the boot. I live on the East Coast and can see getting a lot of use out of these.

    2. Thanks!!!! Not sure if $150 with current offer is worth it.... may wait for sale. Is the sole lined? Maybe good to get an UGG insert.... thanks for the help....

      Delete
    3. Actually I was wrong - the whole inside is lined EXCEPT the sole and the where the elastic is on the 2 sides (wearing them today and did a double check) The quality is good so if this is a style you can see wearing often it is worth the price but if not then wait for the sale.

    4. I may get them, I have lots of croped pants...like Cameron’s. wondering how they would work! THanks....so much.... guess can try... lol

  6. There is nothing for me. My favorite items are actually the tartan lady jacket and matching skirt, but I have no need for either. I'd scoop up either at a great price on sale. I'm holding fast no my "no blends" ban (for now).

I have the Stewart tartan blouse and perfect winter boots from last year and love both. I also have the repeated tartan Cameron pants with the tags still on them, as well as that tartan maxi skirt from last holiday still with the tags.

    1. Same, Cheritheberry, same! I do like the blackwatch Tippi but as Luxette noted, it does not ship until Dec. 10. I'd want it right now to take with me to London

    2. LOL same here. I am very curious about the blackwatch tippi I have the blackwatch perfect shirt that I shamelessly wear way before x-mas.

    3. Cheritheberry,

You work at J.Crew, right? There is an opening at my local store for "Visual Associate." It is part time and hourly. I'm wondering if you can tell me what that job involves. Is it mainly doing the window displays or interacting with customers on the floor and keeping the store tidy? It sounds like maybe both from the obtuse job description. Also any info on the pay would be great and what to expect working for J.Crew in general.

  7. As others have noted, I have enough tartan plaid from previous years and there’s too much repetition in general. There’s some new Collection items, but nothing I need. May consider double faced wrap cashmere coat in camel (it’s been on the site for a while) if it’s still available during end of season sales. I own other items in this cashmere and I really like them. I only ordered the embellished loafers in festive plaid with pearl details, (K2940). They’ve been in stores for a bit, but couldn’t locate a size 10. I thought I was ordering them during the Pre-Black Friday event, but discovered later that there was an issue with the style number being incorrect. Any way, I’ll just return the wrong pair. Website hasn’t updated yet to show them in the shoe section. They’re in the photo with the tartan trim jacket.

    1. So much repetition. I don't mind because it gives me ideas to shop my closet.

I admit I love the new tartan heels. That heel shape is so pretty. I have way more fancy shoes than I need, it's obnoxious, but I justify because other than pretty shoes I tend to wear a uniform of black top, blazer, jeans... of course I have too many of those too. Sigh.

    2. Good point about the repetition. At least I can start with what I already own🤣. I’m also not rushing because everything made it to super sale last year, so there’s really no FOMO. Those heels are really cute! I’ll be so glad when I can shop them again. I see you‘re headed for vacay. Hope you guys have a great time. The house looks great, so good time to get away for a bit.

    3. I have to say that I don't mind the repetition. What I do mind is them trying to embellish on the already-embellished. It reminds me of a year and a half (or two years ago?) when they'd stick a ruffle on anything, and then it became one ruffle too many.
As far as the repetition, today I am pleased as punch that JC always uses the same color family and has for years. Things I purchased years ago match or are very close matches for things I bought 2 months ago, so that I can inadvertently make tone-on-tone outfits. I'm not always grateful for that stupid orange-red color JC repeats and I ALWAYS hope it's a true red instead of an orange-red, but hey - if you buy enough of that color, in a decade you'll have a whole wardrobe in the exact same shade of orange-red!

    4. Too funny Eeps. Yes, I was thinking how my lace pants from last year are not as deep as this year's version, however, they do match several items I already own so I haven't had trouble matching, even if I prefer this year's color.

I realized (after a few too many purchases) that the ruffles aren't quite me. But I like some of the other embellishments.

Tara, thank you! Contractor is coming really early tomorrow to try and tighten a few things up. It's not perfect and we still have two and a half bathrooms (one is retro pink so I'm just going to go with the color and have fun since it's just a powder room) that will need gutting but for now it's much nicer and we can entertain family and friends over the winter holidays.
We haven't gone away with all three girls in AGES so I hope it's a good family bonding time.

    5. @ eeps, maybe I'm the only one but I love the red-orange. I do agree J crew needs to stop "ruffle slapping" I this roll out is seems to be fringe and lurex all over pieces that don't need them. Why so much bling all the time? It makes these pieces unwearable for me.

    6. cerise...not my favorite red. the festive red ...this season is nice IMO.

      Delete
    7. @ bythelake - truth be told the color is not stupid. It’s me that’s stupid because every time I see it I fool myself into thinking JC is finally putting out a true cherry red and every time I am disappointed and have to return. Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?

    8. Love my black Stewart Tartan perfect shirt and red tartan maxi skirt from last year. I wasn’t sure if I would actually wear the maxi but I got it on a great promo, and I wore it three times over the holidays last year (different people at different holiday parties lol!). I love those pieces and can’t wait to wear them again.

  8. This is first time in a long time for me that i didnt find at least one mist have in a rollout. Agreed on the faor isles being cute, but ive been so burned on their shortened boxy cuts and cheaper blend fabrics i cant pull the trigger. Sad! I feel like i can get pilly/cheap/poly blend stuff at gap for much less money than the half seaspns wear i will get out of it before it looks old and worn. Sigh.

I am glad i stocked up on a few basics at ll bean during their sale...their cashmere is really nice quality!

  9. Just received a JCrew floral statement necklace purchased from Nordstrom K1969. It came beautifully packaged and in a gift box. If anyone is searching for this item post here as I will be returning it directly to a store rather than mailing it back this weekend. They are all sold out.

  10. I re-ordered the Blackwatch Marties. I liked them last year and am not sure why I returned them. I will compare them to Loft’s cheaper and machine washable Marisa pants in Blackwatch which are on the way to me in a bigger size since the waist was tight in my normal Loft pant size.

Good thing about repeats is you know your correct size!

    1. I have them from last year and I found them surprisingly versatile. But I struggle a bit with shoe selections in cold weather for these cropped pants (and other cropped pants). I tend up commuting in various different (ugly) commuting shoes and changing into dressier flats or heels (with no socks) and going around with bare ankles. But I'd like to find shoes I can wear for my cold commute and keep on for work. Any suggestions? I've tried various "booties" but they don't look quite right. Maybe I need to keep trying? Please help me and my cold ankles!

    2. Toronto Modern, I am with you! Except I'm freezing in my office and skip the pants all together, hence the tags still being on my tartan Camerons from last year!
