J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    1. I wish they would pick an update time and stick with it! I'm sick of checking like a crazy woman every morning!!!

    2. I hear you. I've been looking for the red/blue striped new perfect fit tee in size small for months. It seems like every size but small pops back. The time changes every day. I guess it keeps things interesting??!!

  2. Has anyone tried the Gemma mules from Madewell?

I don't shop there that frequently to know their sale schedule - any guess as to whether they'll offer a discount code anytime soon? (I'm so used to J.crew where if you wait 2 days you're guaranteed to get it on sale)

    1. Hi Lauren - I'm interested in the Gemma mules as well. Madewell codes seem to be few and far between. In early June, they sent out $25 off $75 codes to Madewell Insiders, but I haven't seen anything since then.

    2. They don't do promo codes frequently, but they do regualarly discount their items on sale. The only issue is almost everything, except jeans I think, is final sale on sale. Sometimes there is a small window where it isn't marked as final sale online.

I did get a 15% off coupon for entering and losing a sweepstakes.

  3. ICYMI I posted this in another thread on Friday night: Reviews of new rollout items at Brookfield Place (haven't seen online yet).
I tried on the bow front cube print dress, which I took in my regular JC dress size and it was perfect. Very cute, good quality silk, only wish it had pockets. It is very autumnal and going on my fall wishlist.
Also tried on the bee print pants - a heavy jacquard, well made, adorable print, I took one size up bc they didn't have my size and found that it fit in the waist but roomy in the thigh/butt. I am 5'1 and it fit like a regular length pant. Also going on my fall list, bc the fabric is too thick to buy now and wear.
I also tried on a silk maroon popover with a dog print - silk was a little too thin/sheer for me, and my usual JC shirt size was tight across the shoulders.
Lastly I tried the so-called backwards shirt, took my usual top size. The wide stand up collar wasn't quite wide enough to be boatneck, and the cotton poplin + stripe made me feel like I was in a straitjacket. It was shoulder buttons on one side, and hi-low hem, which I usually do not like but liked here. I am on the fence about this top: I can't unsee the straitjacket thing but I like the shoulder buttons, hem and cotton (it's not sheer, a bit stiff but not Thomas Mason stiff).
I saw a gray sweater with buttons halfway down the front (like a henley) with embroidered parrots on either side of the buttons. Didn't pick it up because I'm not a fan of that style nor the birds.

    1. Thanks, eeps! These items aren't online because they're part of the August rollout, if I'm not mistaken. Brookfield Place is a concept store so they feature items ahead of the rest of the stores. JCA Cass featured some of these items on her IG (myclosetandmycats) in case any other JCAs are interested in seeing them.

Curious about both the bee and dog prints! What color is the background for these?

I'm not a fan of animals on either side of a top either -- i think one side would be enough personally, but hope it works well for others out there. Curious to see what else is coming down the pike!

    2. The bee prints were a navy/good jacquard--they were on the capris and shorts on my IG. I did not see the dog print when I was there.

    3. Oh, thank you, Cass! I'll go look again. I love the combo of navy and gold, hoping they have a skirt in this print.

    4. the dog print is on a maroon silk popover, but the dog is not a block print dog (as in the black silhouette of a dog). It's an actual dog, in all its drawn glory (brown, standing).

    5. Oh, how curious about that dog print! Thanks for the info, eeps. A silhouette of a Scottie or such might have been cute. Hmmm.

    6. Thanks for the preview reviews, eeps. I'm looking forward to this next roll out!

  4. so i got the NY sweatshirt in XS and S. they came separately so i previously posted only about the XS...

anyway... so the XS fit really well in the body but i felt the arms were just a hair short so i wanted to see what the S was like... if the arms were longer and if i could deal with the baggier body.

well, guess what. the body was way too baggy and i didn't see much difference in the arms. so the S went back. so if you're like me and in between sizes, you might just want to go for the smaller size.

    1. I got both sizes too and opted for the xs instead.

    2. If you were between sizes and planning to wear the sweatshirt over a button down, would you still size down, or go with the S (as in, does the bigger size of the two mean more width in the sleeves? or same width in the sleeves but wider in the body)?

    3. I tried this on and the xs body fit but the sleeves were a little above the wrist making it look too skimpy. Sleeves on small were perfect and body didn't seem much bigger.

    4. i'd still go for the XS. i felt the S was just too sloppy on me.

  5. Boy Meets Girl utility shirt (tried 0P). I found I can only wear this tied in the front, so I am on the fence about returning. The color is much drabber than the field mechanic green, but it works for the look. Here I like the ruffles on the front pockets, as they make this top unique from other utility shirts. Said pockets are large and placed just so that one could go up a cup size or three if so inclined and armed with a bit of poly-fil. They are well-sewn, though. Collar is nice and stiff. Sleeve length just above the elbow is lovely. The hemline is hi-low. This works really well for tying in front. When I do that, this top is very cute and works well with my figure (narrow waist (narrow at least when standing, ha)). Worn open or buttoned down, this top looks ridiculous. It bubble flares in back from the yoke while flaring straight out A-line in the front. I'd love the option to wear it more than one way, but it seems optimized for a fitted front knot, which is a look I love and do rarely. This may be worth it, then.

    1. Interesting, I hadn't thought about trying to wear it knotted in the front. I was intrigued by this shirt and do like wearing shirts knotted, but agree, it would be nice to be able to wear it more than one way.
Thanks for the review and the styling idea!

    2. @maryeb you're welcome. Let me know what you think of the shirt if you try it.

  6. I received a few sale pieces last night.
Linen lace-up beach sweater in black. It does run a bit loose as reviews said. I ordered my usual XS and it has a generous fit. It's a bit longer in the back. The linen has a slightly open weave so it's a little sheer which isn't a big deal for me. I tried it with pull on shorts, denim cut offs and an eyelet mini, which was my least favorite way to wear it. I think it would work well with jeans too. I do like it but I'm on the fence about practicality because it's heavy. Not necessarily warm but the weight.
Wide brim geometric straw hat. This is cute and a great price, BUT I don't think it's great for traveling. I have another hat that I can tie around my bag. This one would need to be worn unless I tie a ribbon through the weave. The brim is super wide. If you have your own pool and need a hat for lounging, I recommend. I might return due to practicality.

    1. I returned the hat as well...but yes if I had a pool at home I would also rec. it.

    2. I also received
The piece dyed Irish linen popover in Coral. I reached out to a stylist and for some reason the color didn't copy, I actually wanted the white. I tried it on for size and typical of a popover it's wide through the body on me, but I like the look. Hoping to get a popback on the white.

    3. Unknown, it's too bad it wasn't made with a tie or drawstring through the headband. My favorite hats are those I can adjust to fit my small head or tie on something.

  7. OT: does nordstrom price match j Crew prices?

    1. Yes but the exact item (color, size) has to be in stock at J. Crew at the time you are talking to customer service.

  8. I stopped by the Fifth Avenue store today for a looksee and was dismayed to see that the new Drake print in orange/coral (currently available online as a square scarf and heels) is not only available as silk pajama pants but has a matching pajama top. The print is great, the coral/orange IS NOT. This would have been great with a more neutral background color or something less offensive to the eye, like a fall appropriate jewel tone (deep purple? Royal blue? Even a deep vibrant magenta??). I cannot imagine anyone wanting to wear head to toe coral/orange. It is a very hard color on most skin tones!

    1. I could have sworn that in store the pajama top was bracelet sleeve, but there's a short sleeve version now on line (item G9826). I hope they didn't go all in with this color!

    2. I pre-ordered this and just received...it was definitely bracelet sleeve so I can only assume the product picture online is not right. The print sucked me in even though I did not love the background color. I agree it would have been better if the background was a different color, and ended up sending it back because I know better than to pay full price. :)

    3. I haven't seen this one in person yet but I like orange, especially for fall. I might have to try the pajama top if it is included with a promo or gets marked down...

    4. Luxette, I really liked the print and definitely have it on my wishlist for sale or promo. It fits just like the other Drake's pajama tops (Unicorn and Bengal tigers). I was also happy that it was bracelet sleeves and not short sleeves like the picture. The background was not a dealbreaker for me and the print really is beautiful.

    5. I really like this print too, but I hope they change the website picture. I can just imagine the reviews and complaints when the pic shows short sleeves but customers receive bracelet sleeves.

    6. I loved all of the Drake prints from the last collaboration, and this one is very pretty too. Pants were in Hong Kong J Crew and they fit like other Drake pj pants. They're on the wish list.

    7. I like this shirt sleeve version. Would've been a nice change from the previous styling. Short sleeves still work well in my part of the country in fall, but I can see why the change may have been made.
