J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    1. Hi, maqsad - If it's been fixed, then this is a moot point (idle curiosity), but what was the witching hour glitch?

    4. Phooey. I've scored some great deals during that magic window. Seems that BR has also corrected its glitch where free shipping was based on pre-promo prices, rather than the order total after all discounts, codes, etc are applied. :(

  2. Signet Flap Bag. I like the looks of the regular Signet bag too, but the zippered opening is too small/tight for me and the zipper teeth are big and kind of rough. I don't own one, but I thought I'd scratch up my hand using it. I thought the Signet Flap Bag would have the same issue, but it seems like the zipper teeth are smaller and somehow the opening seems bigger than on the regular Signet bag, even though the flap version might be slightly smaller overall. What do you guys think?

  3. Styling the ruffled off the shoulder sweater and Factory straight and narrow jeans on the blog today. Both run very true to size & are of good quality.

  4. Needed to replace my tattered J Crew denim jacket and I took a chance on the Factory Denim Jacket in Dylan Wash last week during a good promo. I really like it. Fits great, TTS, flattering seams and pocket placement, not stiff and a nice medium wash. No annoying whiskering like the retail Newton Wash but otherwise very similar. The price bounces on it are typical Factory but it's definitely a keeper on promo.

  5. I stopped in Saturday and tried on a lot of the new rollout, including the natural denim leather trim skirt, Parke blazer, Lyric wash toothpicks, ombre skirt, ruffle sleeve sweater, camo Foundry pant, shirt cuff sweater, sequin flower Tippi, heart Tippi and fall floral blouse. I tried on a few more items but I ran out of steam writing my post last night, those were the highlights. I skipped a lot of the ruffle/off the shoulder items.

You can see my blog post here.

    2. ^^^^Agree! They're very helpful.

That denim skirt with leather accents is lovely and looks great on those that i've seen it on. I'm too short to pull it off, but I hope it works out for others. Great reviews, Anne!

    3. Agreed!! I tried leaving a comment on your blog, Anne, but the captcha kept giving me trouble. So... I'll post it here.

Thanks for the super helpful reviews. I'm not a big fan of the patterns being offered in this roll-out either, mostly because of the color choice for the Fall Floral. I do like the colors in the Tippi, but not the sequins.

I really like the Collection Denim skirt and Parke blazer. I will definitely try the Easy pant, thanks to your review!

    4. @Lauren you're too sweet, thank you!! xoxo

grr, I'm so not a techie so time to figure out what's going on with my website.

@maryeb thank you! I am going to try the factory easy pants too - they're a really good price right now with the 20% off cardholder promo and I would like a black pair.

@tm93 I was surprised that I liked it so much! I'm excited to wear it but I can see how it would definitely be too much if you're petite.

    5. @Anne, thank you for the great reviews! Love the collection skirt on you, you are making me want it now! I hadn't paid much attention to the blazer before but it looks great and classic on you. I hadn't wish listed anything from the last rollout but I might try the collection skirt sometime.

    6. I like the collection pleated skirt. I don't know if it would look good on me; but I will try it on the next time I'm in the store. It reminds me of the Natural denim pants, which are currently sold out, and probably too long for me.

    7. The natural denim skirt looks great on you. I think it'll be too long on me, and, in the past, when I've purchased this style, I haven't worn it, but you're making me want to try it! I'll probably wish list it and then let it go, which has been my MO lately. I preordered the Emerson Fry linen moto jacket today, which was $$$, so I need to cool it anyway.

    8. @jan thank you! I wouldn't have looked at it twice if it weren't for my SA and the SA at the store who was wearing it!

@MelAnderson definitely check it out if you get a chance!

@blakemdjohns thank you! That's the only thing I'm concerned with - while I'm tall enough to wear it I don't always find myself reaching for skirts this length. And I pretty much only see myself pairing it with black but we'll see. The leather jacket sounds like a solid purchase! I was lucky enough to snag the ash grey collection Crew one on sale this summer so I'm looking forward to cooler temps to get some use out of it!

  6. Received two items over the weekend:
Factory: SHOULDER STRAP TOTE in Camel. This one is a keeper. Vegan bag. Love the color and the size and shape are perfect for work. Price came out under $50 with sale+promo code.

Retail: CAMOUFLAGE FOUNDRY PANT. Fit is TTS for me. True high rise. I like the weight and feel of the fabric. Will likely wear them rolled up like shown on the model. I like the camo trend and these pants are very different than anything I have in my closet.

    2. 15% off for Insiders ended yesterday. I'm not surprised as I guessed the new items would roll out today.
Did you order any of the new items, Cate?

      Delete
    3. Yes - I ordered the Pullover Sweater in Elmwood Stripe, the Camden Sweater-Coat, Madewell x Penfield® Lucan Pink Fleece Jacket, the Adidas® Superstar Track Pants, and the Placed Plaid Cape Scarf. I'll probably end up keeping only one or two of these things... we'll see. I do like that Madewell Insiders' expedited shipping though, I'll have them quickly.

    4. I'm eying the Sweater Coat, Cape Scarf, Track Trousers. Actually I love the whole outfit shown with the Track Trousers and am really tempted to order the whole thing.
I wonder if Madewell will have a promo for Labor Day.

      Delete
    5. I like that outfit too! I didn't even notice the track trousers before you mentioned them. I also like the Alicia boots in brown, except they only seem to be available in black. Please report back if you get them!

    6. lots of overlap between the new offerings at Madewell and the new styles at JCrew. I always find it confusing when they do that. Interesting that they've got that shearling mule - legitimizes this otherwise bizarre style somehow, for us normal folks! (Maqsad)

      Delete
    7. Unknown, I wish they'd let Madewell be Madewell. I don't like how they're J. Crew-ifying it with ruffles and OTS. And now they're literally selling Madewell denim on J. Crew's site. I agree it's confusing. I should not need to remind myself which web site I'm on. They used to be more distinct. Madewell was working and J. Crew wasn't working so I don't think they should muddy the Madewell brand with J. Crew-looking stuff.

    8. Hi cate - I really liked the look of the sweater coat. Do let us know what you think of it!

MW and JC are both selling an almost identical striped ruffle blouse (G7898 at MW, G8181 at JC). Strange!

      Delete
    9. silver_lining, those are so similar! That kind of thing is J. Crew, not Madewell.
I will let you know what I think of the sweater coat. I like boiled wool, and that the sleeves looked set in. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a wool blend. I'll let you know!

  8. My beloved faded chambray from SEVEN years ago just died (item 30713) and I need a replacement but the Always chambray is sold out in my size. CS recommended the factory chambray in perfect fit, but I generally don't love Factory sizing... Has anyone tried this?? thanks! -lep33shops

    1. Hi Lauren - that Factory chambray looks like a really good dupe of your faded chambray shirt. Personally, I like the alpha sizing of these shirts because I often find myself between a 4 and a 6 and the S works just right. But if you're consistently a particular number size I can see where that sizing may not work. CS should be able to provide exact measurements. I'd also recommend eBay if you want to replace it with another of the same 30713 - since you have the item number, if a seller can confirm it you'd get exactly what you want. Good luck!

    2. Hey Lauren, I actually have both the always chambray and last year's version of the factory perfect fit chambray. The factory version is a slightly more faded wash. I took a 6 in the always chambray and a medium in the perfect fit. I probably could have done a small everywhere except the bust, which is always my problem. Let me know if I can answer any other questions!

      Delete
    3. Thanks!! I'm typically a 4 in button downs so the S is usually a little too big but the XS is usually too tight in the bust! But can't hurt to give it a try. I'll scour ebay too!

      Delete
    4. Thanks, Patty! I'm looking for something a little more faded anyway, so that's perfect. The bust is my problem, too, but maybe I'll try the XS anyway...

    5. Lauren, have you seen the new everyday chambray shirt? I think that's the replacement for the always chambray...Ina had it on a few weeks ago, it looks a little darker than the always chambray. I had a version of the factory one at one point and found the quality to be comparable to the retail one.

      Delete
    6. thanks, Anne. Yeah I'm looking for something pretty faded, but good to know quality is comparable. Actually I forgot that I own two factory chambrays (the classic one with two breast pockets) and find them to be of good quality BUT I don't like how stiff they are and was hoping for something softer. We shall see!

  9. Anyone try the Striped Short-sleeve button-down shirt? The lone review recommends sizing down, but I think Ina mentioned it is TTS. I'm torn about what size to order. TIA.

    3. Thanks, Cate.
Yea, I'm still debating. I have two sizes sitting in my cart. If I had time to make the trek to the store, I'd order both and return one of them.

  12. Stopped in the Williamsburg VA factory store on vacation today. They had a gorgeous new fall Floral print. It's a poly blend but still feels really nice and the colors are so lovely. The cap sleeve fit and flare dress and the sleeveless shell came home with me. There was also a knee length flowy skirt and a button blouse n the print. There was a purple Floral pencil skirt I took home too. The dress fit me in my usual 10 but I sized up to a 12 for a bit more room. Took my usual 10 in blouse and 6 in the pencil.

Also - a cotton version of the jacket sweater! I picked up in burgundy. The merino retail ones I sized way down in - this I was a medium. It fit like the retail merino and I have high hopes.

Also almost purchased a schoolboy in gray flannel but decided to hold for a better promo. There was also a pink herringbone that wax pretty. I was a 12 - which seems to be my factory schoolboy size.

40% off in store, plus an unpublished 20% of if using your j crew card, only through today.

  13. Finally received the petite ruffle hem utility dress. And.. I can barely button it up in my usual size. I have a larger size on the way. Anyone have any sizing advice for this dress? It is really cute and I think I would wear it often to work if I can get a good fit.

    1. Are you travelling abroad, by chance, Gigi? Asking because this has happened to me on occasion in such an instance. I can't remember what finally sorted it out: did simply logging in or was there something at bottom of page that allows you to change your location? I hope others can share additional tips.

    2. I wish I were abroad! lol

I looked at the bottom of the page and of course did not see it until you mentioned it and then I went back to the site. Bingo! Thanks for the help :)

  15. Received the Reversible puffer jacket in Liberty® Catesby floral (G7969) today. As indicated in the one review currently on the website, it definitely runs big. I am often between a size S and M (S in more oversized items, M in more fitted items), and I ordered the size S. It is enormous, especially when unbuttoned; I would have needed to size down at least to XS. However, I also find the overall cut rather unflattering on me--just too much of the jacket and all too unstructured, made me look like a hot mess. It is also extremely lightweight (also noted in the website review), and the way the tags sit in the top at the neckline made it hard for me to see how I could have actually worn the olive green interior as a reversible outer version. So even though I loved the idea of it, especially the (theoretical) reversibility, it is a total no-go for me.

    1. Oh that's too bad, it looked interesting (especially the reversible part)...

    2. Uh oh. I ordered this one. Was hoping it would work for our mild winters. Will see what I think when I receive it.

  16. There are new Factory arrivals online this morning including their rehash of the sweater blazer which is in cotton, not merino wool and available in camel, navy, black and burgundy. They also reproduced the Paris tee, there are some wool pencil skirts in brighter colors and their city coat in the same lavender shade that the cocoon coat came in last year.

    1. Hi JCA's! I actually got to Factory this morning.

Patterned schoolboy blazer (F5927) - the pink is absolutely adorable. This caught my eye as soon as I walked in the store. The fit, however....I tried my usual 4 and the upper arms were so tight I could barely move them (remember Chris Farley in Tommy Boy?), but the body was too big - like a box. I thought there was no shaping to it but when I look at the pics, there are darts...so what's up with that? It's also kind of short (and I say this as somebody with a short torso). A little less cost-cutting and they could've totally nailed this.

Sweater-blazer (G9309) - Yeah, I'm going to get this. Sweater jackets and sweater coats are my weakness, and I don't have a grey one. I didn't entertain getting the retail version of this last year because the shoulders were slightly dropped. For me, this cut is better. Arms are slim but I think there might be some stretching since it's cotton. The body was slightly oversized in my usual S, but I liked that because I will wear it as a jacket. I tried the XS as well and the body felt similar but the arms were too tight to layer over anything long-sleeved. The lapels didn't fold as flat as the online pic but maybe they need to be "trained".

Denim jacket (G7058) - I tried the Dylan wash out of curiosity - I agree with Ruffles that it's a great little jacket. The cuffs have a cute striped cotton lining that you can't see in the online pic. I don't need one (still wearing my Nolita denim jacket) but this one is cute and feels substantial.

  17. Hi all, I have the No. 2 pencil skirt in gingham bi-stretch cotton (in pink) from this summer. The label says "dry clean" (not "dry clean only")... can I wash it? Has anyone tried washing it instead of dry cleaning it? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi ldc - these threads move pretty fast so you may want to ask again in tomorrow's review thread. I don't have personal experience with this skirt, but the general consensus on JCA is that if an item says "dry clean" you can usually hand wash in cold water successfully. Some even use the washing machine on gentle.
