Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. If the lovely green Eyelet Shirtdress doesn't work for you, there is a dress in the new Talbots catalog that is almost the same color and sleeveless but may be a more flattering shape. I don't get to Talbots much but I may try it as I love the color.

  2. Speaking of Talbots....after I returned a huge bag of stuff to the Crew yesterday...I'm sure I put them in the red!...I stopped into Talbots right next door. I found a really nice striped tee dress (that actually goes to right about my knee!) with a cute lace up detail at the neck on the sale rack, an awesome black faux wrap skirt with an attached tie belt (I would have bought this in more colors...it's very chic and flattering), and two super flattering tops. Their Friends & Family Event (30% off) starts Thursday and the sales lady is kindly holding my things. I bought a super nice pencil skirt last time I was in. It's very small navy/white gingham check. Fits like a dream. I've been finding more and more items at Talbots. They are very well made and their dresses are long enough for me. And their styles are classics...they don't go to crazy on trends.

    1. If you have the Talbots card you can access the Friends and Family sale early. Yesterday I placed an order for the Madras Plaid Blazer. I've been wanting a madras blazer for awhile, I was really J Crew factory would do a madras schoolboy this season but no luck there. Fingers crossed that the Talbots blazer will work! It is not the traditional patchwork madras but an all over plaid. The colors are great.

    2. I saw that blazer in the store and I think I'll try it too. I've been wanting one and like you hoped the Crew would do one in the schoolboy cut (which fits me best). I'll report in if the Talbots blazer is a winner. I don't have a Talbots card...but I'm thinking of signing up for one!

    3. Talbots jackets rarely work for me, but I love the look of their new Biscay blazer.

    4. This is funny because I literally just looked at talbots online this week for the first time and noticed the green dress that @ruffles mentioned. If anyone tries it please report back.
I'm also very drawn to the flamingo print skirt but not sure if it will be too full. It reminds me of something Jcrew would release.

  3. Ohhhh....I went to the website and saw the green dress Ruffles is talking about. Nice. I like it better than the Crew eyelet dress! I didn't look at the eyelet dress in green because I own a super cute green dress from Talbots from years ago. It's a summer favorite of mine.

  5. Wow Talbots! Just filled my shopping bag with scalloped shorts (5" inseam) and the white denim frayed hem skirt. JCrew version of the skirt was just to a-line and short on me. Will go back to the Talbots site later and do another check--thanks for the head's up!

    1. Hi Muffin! I saw those scalloped shorts and thought "Those are cute! And long enough!" The Crews were just too short. I think the white denim skirt is cute too...I might have to order that too!

    2. Maybe if we buy shorts the sun will shine in Portland!

  6. I'm hoping someone here can advise me. While searching around for a J. Crew Madras jacket on ebay, I spotted a Madras Halter dress. I don't know what year it's from...but it's been quite a few because I don't remember it. It's a size 8....NOW I would probably order a size 6 in the dress, but since this size 8 dress is older I'm wondering if J. Crew's sizing has changed over the years? Does anyone have this dress and can comment on sizing? Thanks so much!

    1. I believe sizing on older J Crew pieces generally runs smaller. However, it's always a good bet to message the seller and ask for a couple measurements to check, IMO.

    2. Wendy is right, Stray Cat. But, I can say, my two faaaave fitting summer dresses are from JC years ago. I just dug them out for you. Spring 09. Size 2. Other is P6. Both fit. WTH? Now I am a 00, once in awhile a 0 or a P0. I've fluctuated, but am basically the same size. These dresses could have run small. Idk. But I do personally feel that most items are going with vanity sizing at the Crew.

    3. Same feeling here... I was P4 consistently in 2008-09. Now I am P0. I'd size down 2x for oldies but goodies. Can always have garments taken in if still too loose.

    4. Thanks Wendy, Sarah and Pansy! The seller does state the measurements, so that helps. I agree....in older clothing from all brands I'm a bigger size. I have sizes 2 through 10 in my closet. That's why I've stayed with the Crew for so long....I figured out my size and I could pretty much count on it. But recently I've taken smaller sizes in a lot of brands....vanity sizing for sure!

  7. A bit OT but new arrivals at factory today. I like a lot this time just as I did last month. A lot of linen/cotton blends, cotton with spandex dresses and cotton tees. To me the quality at favtory on most items is not any worse than retail. They also seem to stick to more classic prints and shapes. That in combo with the natural fibers will ensure I make a purchase at some point.

    1. Seriously, factory has been killing it lately! I love that they do their versions of popular retail items, too. They have a white clip dot midi skirt that from the pics, looks identical to the retail version. I'm also eyeing that cute lemon skirt, and a few tops.

  8. Does anybody have thoughts on the quality/fit of Betabrand?
