Sought & Found: Did you visit J.Crew this {past} Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopped by a J.Crew store this past weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store was/ is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

  1. Can someone confirm the price of the solid perfect fit tees in store? It appears J Crew has jacked up the price to $29.50. Almost positive the solid colors were $24.50 last week. I'm still recovering from surgery and am housebound for another two weeks.

    3. Thanks for confirming; thought something funny was going on with the pricing. Just looked at the price on Nordstrom.com - $24.50.

  2. I stopped in yesterday in celebration of the successful competition of my 3-month shopping ban. It really wasn't too painful and I did a lot of wardrobe analysis/editing so I can be more thoughtful about purchases in the future.

One of the most helpful things I did was categorize my wardrobe by Basics (underwear, etc.), Workhorse Essentials (work trousers, etc.) and Statement Extras (Lady Jackets, print pieces, 3 inch heels, etc.). I realized that many of my J Crew purchases are Statement pieces (crewlade) and I need to invest in the Essentials even though it's not quite as exciting. Michael Kors once called this "Meat, Potatoes, and Gravy." 70% of your closet should be meat and potatoes. I have way too much gravy haha.

I don't need much at all for Spring/Summer but I'm looking forward to the next big rollout!

    1. @Ruffles, great ideas! Lol re: gravy, I have too much gravy too. Since I've really slowed down with my shopping since January I find it's easier to make more thoughtful purchases. Before, my reflex was to buy too quickly/impulsively but now I'm being more careful.

    2. I really like the fact that so many others are participating in the thoughtful shopping this year and regularly discussing it. It is really helping to keep me in check. Thanks ladies!

    3. Ruffles, I really like the idea of categorizing your wardrobe and I especially the 'meat, potatoes and gravy' concept. It helps me think about the contents and what, if anything, I need more or less of.

In the past, I've done a combo of impulse shopping/sale response (buy something b/c it's on sale at a great price, despite not really needing it.) Thanks to everyone's advice and thoughts about thoughtful shopping, I've actually been a lot more selective (at least compared to before!) about why I'm interested in buying something. I still have a while to go and I'd like to get to a point where I truly don't buy anything for a few weeks. Baby steps! I, too, am happy for this community's discussions. :-)

    4. Congrats, Ruffles! I completed mine, too. I opened jcrew.com for the first time in a while and felt like the sale section hadn't changed very much. I'm kind of embarrassed to say that I'm proud of myself, but I had never tried something like this before. The first month was harder than the last two. It helped that in the meantime, I made some big home purchases that occupied my brain (new bed frame, sheets, duvet, etc). So I didn't technically buy nothing these past few months, but I didn't buy clothes and it feels like it changed my whole mentality toward purchasing clothes. I have a few items that I think I'll buy if they come up (I would buy silk shells in fun prints all the time if they were making them!) but it was a good to shop my closet and just remember that shopping doesn't make me happier. So mission accomplished! -lep33shops on IG

    5. Sometimes....I load my cart up. after I go to checkout...see if I really need any of it. and delete. kind of get the buzz from looking but not completing..

    6. @unknown - oh, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who does this!! I'll often leave it for a few days and slowly delete items. Often, days later the whole cart is deleted as I look at it and go "what was I even thinking??" 😂

  3. I stopped in on Saturday with a pile of returns. I tried the woven suede wedge sandals in vibrant flame. I should have paid more attention to the color name as they looked more of a true red on the website but they are indeed vibrant flame, so more of a tomato red. My usual J.Crew shoe size is a 9.5 and I tried both a 9/9.5. The 9 slipped off my heel and the color wasn't what I wanted so back they went.

I also returned the Rayner trouser jean in dark wash which I wanted to love - they run big - I sized down one and could have sized down two sizes but they were too short on my 5'8" frame. I keep trying the Martie pants, I wanted the windowpane ones to work for their current price but the size 12 was saggy in the crotch but fit in the leg...I'm a pretty solid size 10 in pants these days but I think a 10 would prove to be too tight in the leg. These are a pass.

Echoing the comments above about trying to be more mindful about my closet - as I'm restarting my wardrobe after going down a few sizes I am seeing first hand just how much I can realistically wear - the items I replaced first, what's already getting repeated (basics) and what I rushed to buy on eBay/Posh and is still waiting to be worn. Still trying to work on that impulse portion of the program and as I'm letting things go, not feeling like I have to replace everything 1:1. A little rambling...but I'm definitely trying to be more mindful of purchases and it helps reading about others successes!

    1. @Anne, thank you for the reviews as always! I was interested in the woven suede wedge so I appreciate your size comments. Did they seem comfortable to you (I know that might be hard to tell with the wrong size)?
Shoe sizing is pretty frustrating, I ordered the lace up Espadrille with the gingham laces in my usual size and they're def too tight in the toes. Sounds like the woven wedge is the opposite and runs big. Makes online shopping hard. :)
Restarting your wardrobe sounds daunting but exciting too! A fresh start is a great time for more thoughtful purchases.

    2. Jan, thanks! They did seem like they'd be comfortable. The ankle strap is a bit fussy but the wedge was lower and seemed like it would be comfortable, as was the strap across the toes. My favorite shoes from a few years ago are the Lillian wedge - I wear my leopard ones all the time. I still want a red sandal so I tried the Merona red suede block heel sandals from Target which for $28 I hope work out!

    3. Thanks, Anne! I love my Lillian wedges too, I have the nude suede pair and the red patent leather pair which I love since it's hard to find red as you know. I was considering the black woven wedge but not sure about the ankle strap. I hope the merona ones work out for you!

  4. I also just went in with returns. I did find the scalloped hem sweater tank to try on. It's not cropped, so that's good (normal length). I found the armholes to be just a touch too large (but not gaping) and I didn't like how super chunky the knit was--i feel like it limits its versatility. Overall I didn't like it enough to buy it at FP minus promo, but if it eventually makes it to supersale with an extra % off I may pick it up for casual wear with jeans.
Otherwise nothing from the recent roll out interests me.

  5. Looks like no online sale update today at all. :( Nothing I really need but I enjoy trolling the sale updates for collection pop-backs.

    4. Wow, that's shocking! Not sure if this will help or hurt in the end. Sounds like Somsack is being promoted.

    6. I met her at an event in Boston last year. She was lovely. She has dressed a generation of us as well as influencing pop culture. I am sure we will hear from her again. Godspeed Jenna.

    7. WOW! Beyond sad, but happy for her where ever she goes. She made the look of J.Crew the way it is now.

      Congrats to Somsack.

    9. I harbor no ill-will towards Jenna personally and wish her well but I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing. She has been earning a $1m per year salary while the brand has been going off a cliff the past several years. And while a lot of the good styles came from her, a lot of the bad ones did too...and too much assumption that all women wanted to dress like her.

    10. Oh! I am so sad to hear this. Jcrew is in such a rocky place right now it worries me as to what this might mean for the future of the brand. I wish Jenna the best and know she will be missed!

    12. I Love Jenna. I do think the writing was on the wall for a year or two. She will do well in what ever she goes on to do...she is amazing. IMO

    13. Wow. I do feel the timing is curious but I'm very interested in seeing how this will affect the brand. I appreciate Jenna's quirky aesthetic but I was more saddened when Marissa left as her style seem more aligned with my own.

    14. I don't know what Somsack has brought to the company so far. Anyone know what can be attributed to him? Because I'm not totally on board with what's come out in the last year or two, when the ship has supposedly been turned. Time will tell.

I don't mind that Jenna brought some of the bad styles along with the good. Some risk-taking is necessary in a creative field, and not everything is a winner. I think the problems were in how much they produced of the questionable things. I don't know that that was Jenna's fault.

I wish her well, whatever she does.

    15. Meant to say not just how much they produced, but also production quality.

  8. I wonder if JC’s going to try to Madewellize itself with a smaller line, less stores, Somsack in charge. Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me if they keep churning out disposable, un-launderable clothing at similar prices. Somebody is signing off on all of the quality and design shortcuts.

  9. Not sure which direction JCrew is going but ever since my local store remodeled, it hasn't been the same shopping experience since. And if the external change of the stores is a reflection of their direction then it may be time I bid adieu like Jenna!
