"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Part vent: I broke out my bin of shorts yesterday. Definitely need to replace some of my black shorts. I have the linen pom pom shorts from Summer 2015 and although I've worn them a bunch I have hand washed and air dried so they haven't been abused, but they're kind of falling apart. I'm hoping steaming them will at least make them wearable. In the meantime, I ordered the Madewell scallop edge shorts. I don't love buying poly but at least I should be able to hand wash and air dry them easily.

    1. Found another pair from Madewell I bought last year and I remember I washed them once and I was not happy with how they washed. I realized this is stupid for me to toss them, so I reached out and asked if there was anything they could do.

    2. Well, lesson learned. If you wash something and it becomes unwearable, contact CS right away, not a few months later.

  2. The website was acting up on my iPad. I just gave up. I already work for the money. I'm not going to work to spend it too.

  3. A couple of shirts I purchased from J Crew's website have now arrived in a strange ball shape. They take the flat folded shirt, and then twist it into a round ball. It must take quite the effort because it's twisted in such a way that the ball shape holds itself and the first time I had to "unable" it I was worried about damaging the shirt if I was too rough. At first, I thought it was a strange one-off. They I received another balled up shirt. Why would someone go to extra trouble to make a shirt more wrinkled? Has anyone else gotten this "presentation"?

    1. I haven't but I've seen it in pics! I wonder if they do that so the shorts get that wrinkly look they sometimes have in the store,

    2. Hi Toronto Modern, last year, a few JCAs commented on the same origami presentation for certain shirts, it was very surprising. Recently, Ina commented on her IG that they arrive to the store from the warehouse like that. Must be a space saving issue? I think shirts in stores get steamed by the SAs, so we don't often see them like that, but it's different when they arrive from the warehouse.

    3. Yes the shirts cone in "little packages" to the store. Then they get hung and steamed. They are not supposed to be shipped liked that to customers.

  4. Not a vent. Here I go enabling again. The Navy Leather Jacket has popped back on Factory. This is one of my Top 5 J Crew purchases ever. It is gorgeous and looks like a $1,000 jacket. People stop me on the street every time I wear it to ask where I got it.

With all my grousing about the demise of J Crew, there are still gems like this.

    1. Thanks for pointing this out -- enable away! It looks great, too bad it's only available in Small.

    2. It's gorgeous! I would totally bite but It's FS.

    3. @Mrs. Garzelloni, I was swayed by Ruffles' (& monicabonica's) excellent reviews last year so I ordered it thru Customer Service, even though it was FS. I asked them to waive FS in the event of a fit issue and I'm glad I did b/c the size I ordered was a touch big. I eventually caught a popback and I'm glad I did. (I took the same size as I take in Tippis, which tends to be fitted, not roomy.) I wouldn't plan to wear more than a thin shirt or sweater w/ a jacket like this, so I think a slightly more fitted size is the way to go. It's a great piece!

    4. Yeah! That jacket is great :-) My Madewell washed leather moto is softer, but the navy is such neat color. It's totally worth the sale price for sure!

    5. @TM93 - thanks for that info! I will check and see if it's still there and perhaps try calling CS. I love that it's navy as I tend to wear a lot of blue.

    6. I'm so glad you love it as much as I do, TM93 and monicabonica! I hope other JCAs who fit the Small will snap it up (I found it TTS). You will wear it forever.

  5. yesterday morning - email from Gilt reminding me that 25% off JCFactory voucher expires at midnight. put a few things into bag.

there then arrived an email from JC Factory announcing that there would be an astounding sale on everything - everything! the next morning, so you should load up your shopping bag now to be able to grab your loot early.

decided to do this, and let the voucher expire.

this morning, another email from JCFactory - the astounding sale is 50% off everything. wow.

rush to Factory site. all my items are the same prices they were yesterday BEFORE i applied the voucher.

    J.Crew, this is really sleazy.

    1. is it 50% off the "valued at" prices, i.e. not really 50% off a prices they ever charged for the items?

      Delete
    2. it's penny for penny exactly the same as whatever they claimed the price was yesterday before applying the Gilt promo.

    3. @WFF-The factory games are more frustrating than retail games. Short version of the story is that it is a crap shoot. Long version: I hemmed and hawed last week before finally placing an order on Sunday evening. Crossed my fingers that there would not be a better promo this week. On Monday saw the Gilt voucher and got a little mad until I looked and saw the prices were exactly equal to what I paid using the code for an extra 25% off $100 because the "offered at" price had not changed. Sighed relief. Waited again with bated breath this morning as I too received the email in question about the so called big deal today to see 50% off everything. You are correct that prices were better with the extra 25% off. I guess the only thing good about this promo is if you wanted an item that is normally excluded from promos. So far I am still winning at the pricing game but nothing from my order has shipped yet and I still fear that by the time it reaches my door a better price will be offered.

    1. @Cass, I believe it debuts next week in-store and online the next day. (Monday & Tuesday, respectively, if i'm not mistaken.)

    2. oh...i thought it was this week.

    3. Rollout is next week (week of 17th) and Madewell has rollout next week too.

  7. PS, this is for Stray Cat and other JCAs who were asking about that green eyelet dress that is supposed to appear in next week's rollout. It's currently back on the Nordstrom site but if you click on any size, it'll tell you that it's backordered until May 12th. (I wonder whether it will be backordered with JCrew as well next week. They really have a mess of production issues!!) Anyways, here's the link:

Also just noticed that it seems Nordstrom's is no longer participating in eBates.

    1. TM93...thanks! It's like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing....you know? No one knows what's going on....customer service least of all. I had a pair of earrings as part of an order and they weren't shipping. The rest of the order shipped. I figured they were trying to find them in the store....then the other morning they were back on the website!!! GEEZ! I immediately called and told the gal....ummm....they are back on the site and my order still hasn't been filled!"...and she puts me on hold and finally comes back and was like "oh...ok. We'll fill the order for you today....yada, yada, yada." They really need to get it together!

    2. Why is the dress $98 at Nordstrom and $138 on the j crew site?

      Delete
    3. And the J crew catalog says $98. Stuff like this is very annoying.

  8. Not a vent, but a head scratcher. Just received an email from JCrew that says "Come have a second look". Inside in big letters "Styles you have been eyeing" and a picture of a Tippi sweater. AND right next to the picture is a review of the sweater giving it 3 1/2 stars and calling it thin and overpriced for the quality and goes on with more not so encouraging words. WHY on earth would JCrew choose a negative review to include in an email trying to solicited sales????? It's so beyond logic and it feels like they are trying to sabotage their own efforts with every turn.

    1. Yea, that's pretty nuts, but I bet those emails are auto-generated and based on cookies that track your page views and whatnot. (Same with the 'From your Wishlist', sent after you've removed an item.) The template probably is set up so that 'Most Helpful' reviews pop up alongside the item and I'm guessing in poor Tippi's case, that particular review is the one deemed most helpful, or at least 1 of the first that you see on the site.

Other retailers have been known to 'accidentally' delete negative reviews, especially when an item goes on sale, so as not to deter shoppers, so I appreciate that JC doesn't do that, at least.

      Delete
    2. That makes sense because if a real person were putting that email together I would hope they wouldn't use negative comments! And I do appreciate that the Crew doesn't delete negative reviews. I read them all usually when I'm trying to figure out fitting and sizing and I really appreciate them.

  9. Hello JCA ladies! Just wondering if and when the pre-order will work for the new roll out?

    ReplyDelete

    1. It worked for me this morning although the site seems a little slow, I think they do updates around this time in the morning. Lots of Liberty Print, more off the shoulder things I won't be buying and a couple of cute dresses including the one that looks like the Talitha from years ago. A new wool Tippi with a summer pattern of a palm tree and a lot of shoes too.

    2. For those looking to see the eyelet shirtdress, if you put eyelet in the search on Jcrew it will come up.

  10. Also wondering if someone knows how to get the reward codes from online? I saw mine had been mailed out, but am hoping to apply it as pre-order for the new rollout.

  11. I think I've hit my off the shoulder saturation point. I'd like some new cute summer dresses that don't require me baring my shoulders. I think a lot of them are cute but I don't need a closet full of them.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes! Exactly what I was thinking. I have a fairly casual workplace but I can't wear bare shoulder dresses to work and I would like something not suiting but still office appropriate.

  12. Guess I will just keep waiting for the Factory order I placed on Sunday to actually ship. I think J. Crew has just cemented getting an extra $3 out of me per order. I did upgrade to the $3 standard shipping on my last retail order that was eligibile for free shipping and all but one item arrived in three days. I really didn't feel like coughing up more money for the factory order due to pricing games and the fact that I will more than likely be making returns but at this rate by the time it gets here I will be over it.

    1. @JessF, I placed a Factory order on the 5th, but didn't get the 'Shipping' email until the 10th. Shipping took 4 days, as I received my items today (the 13th). I've noticed that the Shipping emails aren't going out very quickly these days.
