  1. Not a love, but information to post. Received the green eyelet dress yesterday. Pros: beautiful color, solid construction, fits great in my normal size 4. Cons: MATRONLY. My husband told me that. On me, 5'6", the waist is too high for the full poofiness of the skirt. It looked like a retro 50's dress gone wrong. Hope it works for others. Going back.

    1. Hi levbacon - I'm 5'5" and short-waisted, and found the waist of this dress to hit more than an inch over my navel. Although I didn't mind the length, the poofiness of the skirt coupled with the high, tight waist didn't work for me at all. I also think that the top looks better open like the online images, but you'd have to fuss with that a bit to get it to stay (and maybe iron it?). I wish it had worked.

    2. Oh, this is so disappointing to learn! I know I'm going to have the same issue as both of you re) high placement of the waist, as that very same thing has happened to me in past with other JC dresses. Thanks to both of you for your feedback. I'm due to receive my dress tomorrow -- I'm 4'11" so the length will be very long, but hemming could fix that (or the Petite version). However, this waist/matronly issue sounds like something else altogether (& often, the Petite waist is even higher.)

      Thanks for the heads-up!

    3. I received my order of this dress in all three colors yesterday. Wishing I had held back on ordering all three. The white fit a lot larger than the green and navy even though I ordered the same size. It looked overwhelming on me. I did like the green color the best. Pretty color and well made. It did go to the bottom of the kneecap with wedges on at 5'4". The green was not as voluminous and I did not feel like it looked super matronly as others have felt. Also because I am curvy I did not feel like I could size down. If you are straight maybe you could. This is going to be a hit or miss depending on shape and personal preference. Again a shame that a dress that seemed like a slam dunk is not working out for a lot of people. I know we complain about short dresses but this one is an inch or two too long. It makes me sad. This type of dress could be a hit for them but it seems proportions are off for the average person.

    4. Sending this dress back is a no-brainer. I just tried the 00 Regular in white. It almost works, but not enough to keep it. I don't want to compromise. I was first put off by the horrid smell that emanated after opening the bag. Clearly fumigated :( I thought the eyelet was pretty if wrinkled, but I don't think the construction is all that nice. I could find this quality at Kohls. Anyway, the fit just didn't work. The waist hit exactly at my natural waist, which is awesome. But that's the only good thing. It was far too long, and there was a lot of gaping in the bodice- just wouldn't lay properly. Sizing up would make other areas not fit, and going Petite would most likely make the waist too high- odd because I'm 5'3". Overall a shame because it would be such an easy to wear, casual dress. I wouldn't call it beautiful, but it's alright for an everyday thing. Style-wise, I think the somewhat 50s vibe is cute and cool. Very classy. Not enough going right to make me try other sizes, though. The construction IMO really is meh.

  2. Ordered the green in 2 sizes, still debating.

  3. I purchased the green eyelet dress in the regular size 8 and sized up from my usual 6 tall. For some reason the tall and petite sizes only came in white which I didn't want. I tried regular size 6 on, and as Levbacon said, the waist was very high and the skirt poofed out from the waist in a very unflattering way but the size 8 gave the bodice a little extra length as well as the overall length which changed the proportions dramatically and it's perfect. The bodice is slightly less fitted than the size 6, but I see that as a plus as it will be more comfortable during hot, humid summer days. For reference, I'm 5'11" /broad shouldered and pretty straight/narrow everywhere else. I would highly recommend this dress for taller women. I wouldn't have minded another inch or two, just a personal preference, but it's still a great length for regular size dress.

I'm also thrilled that this dress has a breathable cotton lining. A polyester lining would have been a deal breaker for a summer dress. After the J. Crew "polyester sale wall of shame" that lingered endlessly in the stores last year, I hope that there will be a renaissance of quality natural fabrics for J Crew.

  4. Since I was so negative on the looking to love thread... All of the items I've recently received were really well packaged and decently presented. Of course they should be, but I do appreciate it.
