Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

    1. Gigi, this is OT, but I wanted to thank you. A couple of weeks ago, you posted alternatives to the Oxford flats. I ended up getting the Sam Edelman Jaydens in black from Nordstrom at 60% off (59.99)! I was afraid they might be over designed, but I get complements every single time I wear them. I would never have come across time if not for you.

    2. LekkerNewYorker - Wow, what a deal! So glad you saw the post. I'll bet black is chic. I found a pair of metallic loafers by Elizabeth & James. Thanks to Suzy, for sizing info! I love 'em.

  5. Everyone here knows I love Frye. There is really no comparison between the quality there and at Jcrew. Nordstroms has free shipping and free returns. Size down at least 1 for boots, up at least 1/2 for flats and oxfords are tts.

I'm not sure of the quality but I noticed old navy has almost exact knockoffs of jcrew excursion vests...including one that is tweed which may be an option for those of you annoyed that the herringbone vest was printed vs sewn.

    1. Reaganflowers I bought my first pair of Fryes last year (the Melissa knee high zip back in cognac) and agree that they are worth the investment. I actually found them to be TTS though. It may depend on the style of the boot. I would suggest checking reviews of a particular boot for sizing. Zappos usually has a good number of reviews. I would be curious to hear what your favorite Frye boot is.

    2. 312JCgirl-the Paige tall rising boots are my favorite...I have every color. I am usually a 7.5 and have a 6-6.5 in these because they stretch which may not be the case for all of them. I love the Melissas...but they just don't look good on me. Jealous you can rock those!! The cognac is by far my favorite color in their boots.

    3. I bought the ON vest and the zippers are gold (not like the stock photo). For many this was the complaint in the reviews but I like the gold zippers. They are definitely less quality than JC's vest in that they are thinner but I like the zipper pockets for practical use. Got both the green and black. i did not see a herringbone on line?

    4. It's the tweed that I saw..it has snaps and is more different than the solid color ones but may be an option for some. It won't let me paste a link but the item # is 922739 in the gray.

    5. Love me some Frye boots! Definitely my favorite boots. Random, but last week, I saw the Melissa button boots at my local DSW. It's been awhile since I've seen Frye boots at my DSW. As a side note, I tend to take my true boot size in Frye boots, but I do have wider feet. :)

    6. Hi ShopLV! Can you comment on the sizing of the ON vests? Are they true to size? Thanks!

  6. Hi everyone! I posted a couple reviews from a British brand, called Poetry, yesterday. They have some beautiful items, use only natural fibers, and are family owned. I posted pics of the Shearling Ankle Boots and the Cashmere Poncho here. I loved both items!

  7. I finally received an order I placed with Target. I ordered, among other things, the Merona ankle ponte pant in navy to try as an alternative to the overpriced J.Crew pixie pants. Sadly, they are going back, but I am going to try a smaller size first.

The good: the material is nearly as nice as the J.Crew navy pixie material. The seams down the front are cute and flattering, and the front closure is easier to deal with than the pixie back zip which always tends to entangle my underwear/top/whatever if I'm not careful. The styling makes them look more like pants than the pixies do. Let's be honest, the pixies are just really thick leggings. I do wear them like pants though, sometimes.

The bad: They aren't as fitted as the pixies. The model shot shows this, but I thought I'd try them anyway. They looked sloppy in my normal size 6. The store nearby claims to have the 4 in stock, so I am going to try them before I return. I really want them to be fitted.

The length was a nice ankle length, and they look really high quality, especially for the price. I'd give them two thumbs up, but trying them on in store first is probably a good idea.

    1. Thanks so much for the review. I’m in need of a new pair of leggings/skinny black pants for tunics. I hate the back zip of the pixie….everything always get caught for me too! 

  8. Question for Boden experts....I got the winter catalog last week and fell in love with a skirt...but it is already sold out in most sizes! Does Boden restock even when they don't show something will be available in "x" weeks? I keep checking back and the odd size pops up here and there...but not mine, of course!

    1. I would check with CS. They are great and very responsive.

    2. Hey, flower power. There are often a lot of popbacks, especially once the initial shipments make their way to us here in the States and people find they need to make returns. Here's the thing, though, if the item is sold out this early that means it is pretty popular and will not popback and stay that way, it will sell fast, so you kind of have to stalk Boden. (Def. call CS, too, since they can place you on a waitlist.)

Which skirt was it that you were eyeing? I am definitely always watching Boden stocks, so I might could keep an eye out for you when I can. :)

  9. I received my Boden purchases the other day, and am really pleased with them. First is the Fun Breton (WL768), which is 100% cotton and comes in 3 colors. I got the Oatmeal Marl Stripe and it is wonderful! I got a size 6, as I don't like my tops to be as fitted, and it fits great, not too loose/fitted. The cotton is substantial as well and will be great for fall.

The second is the Ponte Roma pant (WM346). I got them in black in a size 4 and they fit great as well. I didn't want them skin tight, though I'm sure you could order a size down if you wanted to, as some reviews say it felt better. They are a thicker alternative to leggings and have a button/zip closure to make them look more like pants than leggings. They are very comfortable and will be great in the colder months.

Lastly, I ordered the Embellished Ballet Flats (AR593) in rose gold. They have a bow on them, but are super cute and fit true to size. They do caution that these are not everyday flats because of the embellishment, but that's fine because I wanted them for special occasions. The rose gold is leather and the black is suede.

I plan on buying more from Boden soon and will report back on what I decide on.

  11. I got my little slice of Target's Limsanity yesterday and it is fantastical -- I got the purple gusset tote and I think I kind of want to run away with it and elope.

  12. Also on the topic of Limsanity - check your targets for returns and staggered rollouts. I scored the taupe tote yesterday (full price in what seemed like a staggered rollout) and scored the black pleather detailed dress (online return) for $12 today!! I think the pleather detailed dresses run one to two sizes small, so I bet there will be more returns.

  13. Just leafed through the Talbots catalog which I normally toss and surprised at how much looks promising (after looking past the mumsy styling). Items of note for me: leather and ponte jacket, color blocked merino wool sweater dress, rose print cardigan, bari studded flats, and the faux-leather short-sleeve dress. Anyway, may be worth a look!

  16. I have some BR reviews:

    Tweed Top:
I’m on the fence with this one. I really liked the shape of this tee on me…not boxy and a bit longer length when compared to the J.Crew tweed tee. It has a bit more fluidity. But it shed a bit on me, which was odd. Also, if you are used to the J.Crew version, you can tell there is a quality difference…this one is lacking a bit…almost feels like it needs to be lined. But dang it, I can’t stop thinking about how cute it looked on me. :)

    Flocked Skinny Jean:
A surprise like for me since I tend to shy away from pattern on my lower half when it comes to pants. I’m usually a 29 in non-BR jeans, but took a 28 in these. If you know your normal BR jean size, I’d take that.

Side note, BR has some vests that are sort of similar to the Excursion Vests. I saw both the Printed Puffer Vest and Quilted Vest in my store. The Quilted Vest is an army green, but do believe I saw another bright color. They are both $98 and they were eligible (in my store, anyways) for the additional 40% coupon last night. The Quilted Vest is pretty thin.

And don’t leave home without a coupon. Every Wednesday in October, they will have their 40% one full priced item. I got my coupons yesterday, but they should be emailing them out like they usually do.

  17. Old Navy is having a flash sale of 30% off sitewide with no exclusions until 11:59 pm ET tonight. This is a really great deal if you are shopping for the Everyday Steals that are normally not part of the extra % off. I just ordered several pair of jeans for my three youngest boys since they are everyday steal items, and saved a lot of $$$. :)
