J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Review here of the mirror metallic oxfords. Plus a few sMacKdOwNs.

    1. I agree with you Gigi, sideways thumb at best. I love oxfords and I have the JC perforated sandals in mirror metallic, which I love, so I had to go try these on -- the only thing I was interested in in the last couple rollouts. Too long and pointy, and for me, they were also too stiff -- it hit right at my ankle and I'm sure would not have been comfortable for me.

p.s. Great catch on that Jeffrey Campbell shoe, though!

    2. I tried them on too and they felt very big\long on me too.
      They were beautiful though:)

    3. @audreys - Oooh, the mirror metallic sandals. I never saw those irl, but I tried the patent. I liked the pattern. I bet I would've loved the silver.

@Ina - I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought they were boats.

  2. I've posted a review of the Silk Keyhole top on my blog here
    .
I'm really pleased with it. I'm 5'2" and petite, and got it in size 0P. It doesn't seem to overwhelm me, and the colour is gorgeous.
The only complaint I have is that the lining is poly... but still, I'll be keeping it!

  3. Someone noted in another post that JC silk gets pull marks? Can anyone clarify how that occurs? Simply from wearing and moving about? From washing? I'd like to know so I can decide if I should return the silk blouses I recently purchased. Thanks so much!

    1. some of the lighter-weight silk blouses got pulled thread marks around the armholes, both on the sleeve and body. It never happened with the more substantial silks. The blouses were not even close to being tight on me. Never any problem with tanks or tees in silk.

      Delete
    2. My polka dot Blythe ripped under the arm after one wearing. Not the stitching, the actual fabric tore. It was very loose on me, not tight or gapping anywhere so I don't know what the problem was. The silk wasn't very nice, IMO. Very thin, sheer and cheap looking. Maybe I just got one from a bad batch because others really love their Blythes.

      Delete
    3. Same problem! Loved the polka dot blythe and was upset when it pulled :(

    4. I have 5 JC silk blouses and no tears or thread pulling after a year or so including the polka dot blythe.

  4. I'd really like to get some chunky turtlenecks this year. I know they are not available yet, but can anyone tell me the difference between the Cambridge cable turtleneck and the chunky Cambridge cable turtleneck? I was looking at stock pictures last year, and other than the difference in the cable pattern, the thickness looked about the same? Or is the chunky Cambridge cable really chunkier as the name seems to imply?

I am also considering the thinner Merino turtleneck (item 51663). Can anyone comment on the quality of the fabric? Any itchiness? Thanks!

    1. IIRC, the Cambridge cable turtlenecks (chunky or not) are the ones I returned a couple of years ago because of excessive pilling. I don't know the difference between the chunky and the regular. I kept a black one, since you can't see the pilling as much and it was a flattering shape for a heavier sweater. The pilling wasn't normal pilling, either. You could pull off piles of fuzz down the sides/under arms where your arm would swipe across the body of the sweater. It is possible they have improved the sweater since then, let's hope so. I liked the idea of these sweaters a lot and I'd be happy if they fixed that problem.

In my search for a heavier turtleneck sweater, last year I tried the mens rollneck wool sweaters but I didn't like the fit on me. The quality seemed very nice but they had that tapered at the waist thing going on that is typical for mens sweaters and it didn't look good on me. The quality seemed much better than some of the womens' sweaters, though. J. Crew seems reluctant to make any truly heavy/warm sweaters for women. A lot of us are out in the cold on the regular and could use something more than a thin fashionable sweater. I'd love a warm sweater to wear under my Barbour field coat and I keep wearing my J. Crew turtleneck and rollneck sweaters from the 1990s.

I think the thinner merino turtlenecks have gotten good reviews from JCAs. I don't own one, though.

    2. I have the merino turtleneck in heather gray from last year. I wore it once a week all winter and it is still holding up like new. I definitely recommend it. It's a nice layering piece as it works on its own or with something over it. Last year, the sizing was comparable to the Tippi sweater.

    3. Thanks, cate and AJLin, for your input!

    4. I have both the chunky and regular Cambridge from two years ago in ivory and I find the biggest difference is the fuzz factor, maybe due to the amount of mohair on the chunky version. I have a hard time wearing the chunky version because it gets fuzz on everything in touches. I think the chunky version also has a little more stretch. I have found them to be good pieces but after a few wearings it gives my sweater shaver a workout.

  5. Finally, an actual review from me! I just received the girls' furry leopard coat (item 04892), and although I haven't decided if I really *need* it, it is quite a fun piece. I'm 5'1", ~105 lbs, and generally fit a girls' 12. Like most children's pieces, it has a boxy cut, but I think it works fine for the fabric and casual style, and I can always use a belt to define the waist. The length comes to my upper thighs, and the sleeves are bracelet length on my short arms, which is fine because I like a contrasting sleeve to peek from under my jacket sleeves. The body and pockets are lined in a comfy, gray sweatshirt-like material, and the sleeves in polyester. The closures are large, hidden snap buttons. It's completely machine washable, which was a nice surprise. The leopard dot pattern is chic, and the faux fur has a slight sheen, due to its synthetic nature, but the sheen is not obnoxious. It seems like it would be a fun and easy piece to throw on and run out the door.

  6. Last year's cashmere purl-stitch snoods are back on popback:

    http://www.jcrew.com/browse/single_product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441827673&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302024038&nav_type=SEARCH&bmUID=k467yYt

ShopWithM and Dina G both reviewed this last year and I kept missing out; I did get them both this time with the 20% off card. Expensive, still, but this is perfect timing, as I'll have all winter to use them. And I'm sure new versions are just around the corner at original crazy high prices...

    ReplyDelete

    1. I noticed that too and have to say I looooove these. They are super soft and luxe, though the price is still a premium.

      Delete
    2. As much as I detest cold weather, I am really looking forward to pulling mine out again since last winter only afforded me a couple of wears since it was mostly warm. ;) (I also bought it pretty late in the season, I grabbed it on sale plus % off...which I definitely recommend doing if you can wait--and J. Crew brings it back!)

AudreyS, since I know you are in my area--do you think we'll get to wear them much or will this winter fizzle out like the last few?

  7. Clotted Creame- Couldn't reply to your questions above, but I have found the merino turtlenecks to be very good. Cambridge anything is a pilly mess. They look shopworn taken straight out of the package IMHO.

I have had very good luck with J Crew's silk. I have a ton of tops and blouses in the silk crepe de chine and have never had a pull in any of them. I did get the polka dot silk pleated skirt last fall and it got the weirdest sheer spots like the thread pulled apart just when I was trying to steam out the shipping creases. I think some people had similar issues with some of the Blythes.

The silk jersey that the hearttrob shirts were made out of is fragile, but I usually just avoid jewelry that tends to catch and I don't wear them when I am going to be doing anything rough. For dress up and my office job they do quite well.

I buy many silk dresses and blouses from Juicy Couture and I love their silk. I am wearing a red polka dotted blouse today that is similar to the Blythe and I adore it. If you can get past some of their tacky items, they have some lovely sweaters and clothing mixed in.

  8. Does anybody have a review on the new silk blouse? I am looking at the alabaster, but would like to know how fitted this is and how sheer the silk is. Thank in advance!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks so much for your responses to my questions! I tried on the alabaster, cabernet, and blue silk blouses. The alabaster looked so much cheaper than the other two due to the sheerness. I may be more sensitive than others because I really dislike sheer anything for something I am wearing outside the house, but I could definitely see the color of my skin through the fabric. The only place that wasn't sheer was where the pockets are. The cabernet and blue are really beautiful, rich colors, no sheerness. The fit seems similar to a perfect shirt with a nice drape.

      Delete
    2. Loving the Cabernet, discussed it here .

      Delete
    3. I have the Parisian Blue color in the new silk shirt but I haven't had an occasion to wear it yet. I took the same size as I wear in Perfect Shirts, though. I don't recall any fit problems or gaping in my regular size. The blue is really pretty and I loved the cabernet when I read wff's review of it. I'd be wary of sheerness with the alabaster color.

  9. Review of a Silk keyhole top HERE. It is a nice top and I love the neckline but it was too short on 5'6 me. I also tried the keyhole dress and I really liked the fit and drapey henley tunic. This one has a very nice shape but yucky fabric imo.

  10. At last, the navy foulard Tippi which was on promo about a month ago arrived . . . and is going back. The material is quite thin which, in and of itself, isn't a problem. But the printed foulard pattern looked so cheap and flat--no life at all. I'm thinking the French knot Tippi will achieve the same look, serve a similar function, and will ultimately have more texture and depth.

    1. Unknown Do you have the French knot tippi ? in ivory or navy? Just wondering your thoughts on it it seems nice just haven't seen it in person. My store never receive it .

    2. Mary, I have that Tippi in ivory, and it seems to be a bit thicker than other Tippis that I have. The color is nice and I like the pattern, so I would recommend it. It also fits TTS.

    3. Thanx Friendly Femme that helps a lot!

    4. Thank you, Unknown, for your review of the navy foulard Tippi. I've been going back and forth about this one, not having seen it in the stores. (Not that my size was available online either...) Maybe it was a good idea, but poorly executed? Anyway, now I know. I'm sorry it didn't work for you...

    6. i have the french knot tippi in ivory. i received it last week and am hoping i can get a pride adjustment on it later today since i paid FP.

i can maybe put up a blog post with crappy iphone pics later this week but in terms of a review, it fits TTS and the material is thick and weighty, so i like it better than other tippis i've tried (i've never bought a tippi before though). the only thing about the ivory is that the knots are dark colored and tied on the inside and you can see them through the fabric close up. i don't feel any itchiness from the wool or from the knots, though.

if i can get the price adjustment, i plan on keeping it, otherwise, i'm going to return it.

    1. Thanks for another great review - !! I had been wondering about these, because I also kind of like the idea of wool track pants, even if it is (as you say) a little odd. But you're right, they do not translate into real life (at least, not into mine, either), so I'm taking them off my list.

    2. EA123 - Glad you saw the review :)

    3. Absolutely LOVE the wool racing-stripe track pants and have both colors! I'm not sure how they don't translate to real life??? They are wool pants. You can wear them with a gym shoe, a flat or a heel- there are a million ways to style these! The fit is perfect! It's somewhere between a sweatpant and a legging. Just like any slim fitting legging I think you have to have a nice figure to wear them. If you are looking for a sweater-like legging these are for you! I took my traditional size 00. I will get a lot of wear out of these- they are very versatile!

  12. Off Topic, but I received Factory coupons in the mail. 10% off purchase of $75, 20% off purchase of $125, 30% off purchase of $200. They are 3 separate coupons (yellow cards), and each says "Enjoy double points with your J. Crew Card". Fine print says "In stores and online at jcrewfactory.com through 9/29. It also says (unfortunately): "Offer valid in U.S. and Canada only" etc. but goes on to say "Not valid in Canadian J. Crew factory stores or on phone orders". That doesn't make sense to me unless they mean Canadians can only order from Factory online.

I am wearing the navy french knot tippi right now! The sizing is the same as all other tippi's and I have to say - I LOVE IT!!! Very nice to layer under a jacket (as I did this morning) or wear alone (as I'm doing right now cause it's so darned hot in my office!!).

  14. A comparison review of J.Crew majesty pea coat ($298) versus Lands' End luxe wool pea coat ($149), in charcoal, size 6 at J.Crew and size 4 at Lands' End. I ordered both with 30% off coupons so did not pay full price for either.

Both are classic double-breasted pea coats that hit at mid-hip, are lined, and generally seem well made.

Fit is similar in both, a bit boxier in Lands' End but not much, and not so much that I think I need a smaller size. Lands' End fabric is also a bit bulkier, and their charcoal grey - which they call dark heather charcoal - looked black to me (to clarify, they do have a separate black color option). Lands' End just added more colors, so now they have wider range of color options than J.Crew.

Fabric on J.Crew is more refined, which I think is one reason it feels a bit trimmer overall in cut/fit. Lands' End one has a nice inside pocket, black buttons (unlike gold buttons on J.Crew, which I mentioned in an earlier review).

In other words, each one has pros and cons. The J.Crew seems to be higher quality overall, though not enough (in my opinion) to justify the current price difference. I am going to hold out to see if the J.Crew gets marked down significantly, then I would purchase it and replace buttons.

    Hope this helps!

  17. I bought some Madewell items over Labor Day with the 30% off sale and thought I could review. I bought the Sidewalk Skimmer in calf hair (#67822) and the mini-bow ring (#21171).

The skimmers ($98- I got them for $69) are well made, and seem to be a great alternative to any of the calf hair flats offered for retail. The fit TTS, and while they do need to be broken in, they are comfortable after that.

The mini-bow ring ($12.50- got it for $8.75) is cute and understated. I think it goes well with a lot of things, especially if you are looking for something cute but not too loud. It is lightweight as well.

  18. I bought 5 new items last Thursday 9/5 when I accidentally walked into a Factory that was having the new rollout. Then I "got to" go back on Saturday to return and repurchase, since several of the items had better promos plus the Gilt City discount had risen to 40% off!

The upside of this was that I got some really cute things "dirt cheap."

The downside for Mickey Drexler et al is that

    1. Once again I am disgusted with the pricing "strategy." It's like "festival seating" at a concert. Not my cup of joe.

    2. I am not going to pay more than $20 for a Perfect Shirt ever again, nor more than $30 for a Charley. And I will not pay more than $30 for Winnies.

And if those items are never at these low prices again, well, lots of other retailers have similar items. My brand loyalty to JCrew is due to the ineffable, but my wallet rules the day!

Mickey, you have trained me well.

    Some reviews:

    1. Style 27584 - Relaxed Boyfriend Field Jacket - army green (not the color name); also comes in blue. About $75 ($10 off, plus $40% discount). This is very similar to the retail Downtown Field Jacket -- if you have that, you don't need this. Difference: this is not "coated" canvas--it is not as stiff. And the zipper is a little bit wiggly looking--ie, not 'military straight.' This will bother some. Since it was "relaxed," I sized down to XS, which still has plenty of room for layers.

    2. Houndstooth blazer - Style 03599, color CCR. A cream-base with the classic houndstooth pattern of black with a stripe of red. 40% wool, 40% poly, 40% acrylic. Fits long, to middle of my rear (5'5").

Upsides: the fit and the sleeve lining, which is striped poly; the pattern is matched from the sleeves across the chest. Buttons are a cute muted gold crest.

Downsides: the pattern is not matched on the side (does not bother me, tho). The pleather arm patches are juuuust a tad too low--my elbow doesn't quite poke the middle. (I don't think this is me; happened to my friend, too). Not sure yet whether this bothers me enough to return....

This jacket was $80: $198 on the ticket, minus in-store promo of 30% minus Gilt City 40% off.

I am wondering if anybody will comment on the long merino button-down sweater--got it in black and gray, as it was about $30 w/discounts. Is this going to be a pilly mess? Did I pay $30 for 3 wears?! :0)

    Have a great day, everybody.

    1. Did you get the long merino button-down sweater at the Factory? I can't find it on the web site. I have the retail version of this sweater in several colors and they have been great. Is the Factory version 100% merino wool? If it is, I think you'll have good results.

    2. Virginia PrepModern - I'm with cate on the Factory long merino. I have a black one & don't regret it at all.

    3. Usually their merino wool sweaters are a home run, but I am perplexed by the Oversize Pocket Sweater. It's 100% merino wool (thicker than the cardigans and turtlenecks, though) and mine has pilled quite a lot. It surprised me. I wonder if the thicker knit is the culprit.

      Delete
    4. The factory merino cardigan is 100% merino. I've had good luck with them in the past, similar quality to retail and no pilling. I haven't seen them on the website yet - my Factory store had black, grey, a heather acorn type color and a dark jade color. I'm wishing I had bought more colors now!

      Delete
    5. Thanks for the reassurance, Gigi and Cate! Yes, as shopmurphy says, this is 100% Merino. Is is about finger-tip length, 6 buttons, and would have a deep V if it were worn closed. Style #93528, $79.50, or about $34 with 30% in-store discount and 40% Gilt City. I got black (BLA) and heather charcoal (HCA) but the store I was at -- Potomac Mills in Woodbridge, VA -- had hot pink (not neon, but deep bright pink) and an aqua (I don't think it was the jade shopmurphy mentions, but I could be misremembering). The sweaters were displayed above pencil skirts, one of which was a thick cotton watercolor-y floral, and seemed to have all those colors in it. It is a classic piece. I would have stood there dithering for an hour if I had to choose another color, so I got the two colors what would be "wardrobe workhorses."

If this sweater holds up, I *would* spend more on it, unlike what I stated in my price rant above :0).

  20. Matchstick jeans in selvedge Harbor wash- I am so disappointed in these. Usually I can depend on matchsticks to fit me well. These were huge in my normal size 28 (extra inches at the waist and throughout) and IMO they looked a lot different than online. The wash seems dull compared to the stock pic and the pockets online look to be a different proportion than irl. I think I'd have to size down two sizes but I'm not even going to bother trying. They are 100% cotton, I'm not sure what that would mean for stretch as I don't have any jeans that are all cotton.

  21. This site is interesting and I'm still trying to figure it out. I thought I'd come here because I love j crew, but most the comments on here are negative. I'm not sure why most of the people on here shop at j crew. The majority of comments are either lack of quality, bargain price hunters or all about factory. I've never had a problem with the quality and I think the quality is in line with the price point. J crew is not an expensive clothing line. I'm not sure what kind of quality you expect from this price point? I expect high quality from high end designers. The quality at j crew is average and so are their prices! Actually the quality and cut is better than most of its competitors like banana, Ann Taylor, Boden...... I don't ever shop factory and wish there was a special site or section for factory comments, instead of weeding through all the factory comments. There are a lot of complaints about sizing- which again I'm not understanding because 99% of the time I take my exact same size at jcrew. I find a lot of people on here reviewing clothes are not wearing their correct size. Is there anyone on here that loves j crew, the styling, the quality and the price point besides me?

    1. I've been an avid J Crew shopper for about 20 years and they are by far my favorite retailer. I have only recently started to comment on this blog but have been a reader for a few years and am very grateful for the diverse and honest opinions posted here and for all of the help that JCAs give one another. Most of my comments have been positive and in some cases glowing, but if I try something where I think the fit may be off, quality not on par, etc., I will post that in an effort to help other JCAs particularly those who may not be near a store. I think many JCAs also hope the feedback may reach J Crew. Ultimately I think we all want to see JCrew continue to succeed and continue to provide the quality clothing optoions and customer service many of us have come to associate with the store.

    2. Katie -- I love J.crew. Although there are moments when I wish some of the Collection items were a little more in line with the regular price points, overall I think J.Crew does a great job with quality and price points. In my mind, Ann Taylor and BR don't compare by far. My closet will continue to be filled with pencil skirts and merino sweaters from them. Thanks for posting you comments. I agree!

      Delete
    3. I love J. Crew but I don't agree with everything you wrote. Boden absolutely is better quality than J. Crew. J. Crew Collection is absolutely expensive and more and more of what they are rolling out is falling into that category. J. Crew seems to be aspiring to be a higher end brand while still feeding the regular clothes to the masses. They may be average, but they don't think so ;) The cut at J. Crew can be great but it can be terrible too (dresses, I am looking at you). As for sizing, we've all got different body types. Some of us are different sizes on top vs. on bottom vs. in the middle. J. Crew cuts a lot of their clothes for a certain body type and if you are not that type, it can be a challenge to make the clothes work, no matter how much we love them or want them to.

      J. Crew continues to not have customer reviews on their web sites, so this site (and J. Crew reviewers' sites) are great for us that need to know how things fit, particularly when a lot of the customer base does not have access to a brick-and-mortar store and pay a lot for shipping and returns. I appreciate the honest reviews by people who are different body types. If I want to see how something fits the model, I'll look at the model photos. Actually, I can't even do that, because the color is often not a true representation, and neither is the length or the fit (they're pinning things) etc. What you may perceive as negativity, I perceive as honest assessment.

I don't have a blog, but I post in the Reviews section a lot. I don't know how you'd know if I were wearing my correct size. I think we're all trying to get it right, but like I said, we're not all the body type that J. Crew is designing for.

You are right that the "Love" posts don't get as much feedback as the "Vent" posts, but I think it's a given that we love J. Crew or we wouldn't even be coming here.

I agree with you, though, that the cut/style and quality for the price is the right mix for me (Collection pieces excluded). That's what drew me to J. Crew and what keeps me coming back. Have a great day!

  22. Hi all. I went to my local b&m today and tried on a bunch of stuff, including sweaters (even though it still feels like summer here). First, the merino striped colorblock sweater is adorable and looks great with jeans, but is very oversized. I usually wear a small, but I got an xs and could have done an xxs except that the sleeves were too tight. I also tried on the merino houndstooth tippi. I don't know why they call it a tippi since both the cut and the weave are nothing like the other tippis. The wool is very thick and soft. The body is pretty short (and I have a very high waist), so if you have a long torso this may not work for you. I would have been tempted by it, but the one I tried on had a hole the size of the tip of my pinkie finger right in the middle of the stomach area. Didn't speak well to the quality of the sweater, which otherwise seemed good.

    1. Thanks Dmitri. I am interested in both the French Knot Tippi, and we don't have it at our B&M, so I appreciate so much seeing it on you! Looks gorgeous on you! Love the Tossed Hearts Silk Boy blouse as well!

    2. Aww, thank you! Yes, the Silk Boy Blouse in Tossed Hearts is nice but not something I could wear regularly to justify the cost. Doesn't look like it'll go on sale, though, so I do recommend it for those who can see themselves incorporating it well with existing pieces in their closet!

  26. Several reviews below:

Merino Tippi sweater in houndstooth: Very cozy sweater..a bit thicker than a usual tippi. TTS. Didn’t really love the should patch design once on, so a pass.

Scallop-trim mini: TTS, but size up if you want some length. At 5’3, the length was fine. I really like this skirt…simple, but a tiny bit of a twist. Curious if anyone has seen the pinot noir color in person. Pretty?

Silk boy blouse in tossed hearts: Took my normal 6, but too tight in the chest area. Size 8 was too big. Lovely shirt though!

Colorblock wool baseball cap in grey/navy: I bought this but on the fence. Anyone have this? Thoughts? Is this practical to wear a lot due to it being a heavier wool? I tried this on for my mother and she wasn’t a fan of the look. I like it....help.

Factory printed voile popover: I wear a size 6, so took a small…fit perfectly. Nice shirt and not too sheer.

Excursion vest: Let me preface and say I’m not usually a fan how these look on me. But I tried both the retail and factory versions on recently since I was so jealous of seeing how cute they look on you all. The factory version was hands down my favorite. The small fit like it was made for me. I disliked the higher collar on the retail version. So this girl is converted!

    1. TXgirl14, about the baseball cap. I have the beige/gray version. I haven't worn it yet because it's been too hot for a wool hat, but I do like it. I am on the fence about the beige because it's kind of a weird color, but I am drawn to the color combo ever since that ballet themed catalog a year or so ago. Figure out what you'll wear the navy/gray cap with and where you will wear it. If you have answers to those questions, then for sure keep it, it's cute!

    2. Thank you cate! I feel better already. I do think it is cute. It sure looks more stylish than my team baseball cap. :)
