Special Treatment: 20% Off & Free Shipping at JCrew.com

"Thanks!" to many of you, in various posts, who shared the following news with us: J.Crew is sending out emails to customers with a unique 20% off (no min!) and free shipping (no min!) code.

The code is being sent in an email to both cardmembers and non-cardmembers. It can be used on any regular or sale priced item (but does exclude third-party branded merchandise). The code can only be used one-time and expires March 2, 2013.

It is nice to see such an unexpected perk for customers. I am not sure how J.Crew determined which customers are their "best", but yey for all those with the email!!!

Did you get the 20% off email from J.Crew recently? Do you think this promotion will entice you? Please share!

  5. I got mine last night and waited until this morning to use it to see what the pop back ferry had brought this morning, I got the Pear Sweater and the pink Excursion vest for $55 a piece, I also got the turquoise two tone cashmere sweatshirt for $72, I wasn't totally sure on this one but it wasn't marked final sale so I took the chance. After reading some reviews I went down a size so hopefully it works.

  7. It's nice that they're doing this more broadly, but it takes some of the shine off the offer for the cardholders, given that we're supposed to receive "special" offers.

  8. Well, ladies. I just emailed customer service asking about how it is determined who receives the promo. If I don't hear back this morning, I will call.

Seriously. I am a J. Crew cardholder. If I don't get a perk, why the bleepity bleep do I have a card?

  15. Considering how much I have spent recently, I don't think it has anything to do with purchase history. I think it might just be a random pool of people. If someone has a code they want to share, please email me at tweetiea@aol.com.

I seem to never get these things!

  17. I would like to get in line for a code that no one is using. I am eyeing the vivid jade biennial and will order it with 20% off. Like the others above, I have no idea why I didn't receive one of my own...but who knows.

  19. I really wonder if there is any rhyme and reason to who they give the codes too. Jcrew sent me one to an old email address that is no longer linked to my account (it was linked 10+ years ago though). I also got one sent to my regular email address (not a cardholder and only a sale shopper). If anyone wants one of my codes, please email me at yalegal4ever@Gmail.com.

I wasn't one of the fortunate ones to receive the email. =( I have my eye on the No. 2 Pencil skirt in Clover Tweed and getting an additional 20% off would be great! 31. Hey girls,
I politely wrote to J. Crew customer service this morning stating that I was terribly disappointed that I learned about a 20-percent off and free shipping promo on the J. Crew Aficionada blog and did not actually receive the special code. I said as a cardholder, I would expect to receive such perks.

I got a response saying: "While the 20% offer was not sent to every customer, we’re always looking for new ways to thank our loyal customers and we did not intend to exclude anyone. You are a valued customer and we'd love to offer this promotional discount to you."

The rep said I could call a 1-800 number to place an order and that I would get the discount.

I find the response interesting and perplexing. On the plus side, it was nice for the company to get right back to me, but if they just sent the code in the first place, I wouldn't be annoyed. Honestly, who calls in orders? I just want to take care of my bizness on the Internets and not have to speak to a sales associate.

So, I don't officially have the code, but if I call I will get it. LOL.

    1. Yes, this is the standard wrote reply that they send. It is a script. In the past if you don't receive a code AND are a cardholder you will get the discount with a phone order only.

  33. Upsetting to not receive the code. I spend a great deal/month on JCrew! It should be offered to all cardmembers! Bad PR.

    ReplyDelete
  34. While I did not receive a code, and have ordered more than I care to admit in the last few months, I am not sure if 20% off is enough for me to bite right now. I am hoping they offer a better promo...maybe 30% in the near future. With the way their prices are right now on some items, I think I may not be alone.

  35. I spend a fair amount of money at J.Crew, and I did not receive a code. I would've bought something, too.

  39. Good morning,
I got an email this morning letting me know to check out 6 must see items at jcrew.com I was all set to pull the trigger on a few items but thought to check out this blog before hand since it's been a while. As I've been a cardmember several years and have really ordered so much the last few mos and over the holidays I was a little perturbed at this arbitrary discount code email. So after reading a few replies, namely Susan's above I decided to give them a call.
I called the main # 800 562 0258 just less than 10 minutes ago and calmy explained how I was made aware this morning of this secret discount code email and my taking offense to not receiving said email on account of being a multiyear cardmember and so on. The associate i spoke with looked up my email and name and then apologized and seemed baffled as to why I hadn't received the code. Her best guess was that it may have been in my spam folder. It wasn't. She then offered to call me back later today or tomorrow to check with me and see if I was ready to place my order stating that she would definitely honor the code for me. I placed my order and with that it was done. The whole thing took maybe 6 minutes at best. I recommend those of you cardmembers or not at least give it a shot. I kept a pleasant demeanor and just asked out of natural curiosity. I intended originally to do a red phone order via my stylist and use my educator discount but hey an extra 5% never hurt anyone. Especially at these prices! Happy trails my friends...

  42. I chatted live with someone earlier, and the customer service agent told me that all cardholders (which I am one) should've received an email and asked if I checked my spam.

She then made a notation in my account to give me 20% off on my purchase and to either:
    1. call to use it
    or
    2. place an order online, then call, email, or live chat with them and they'll adjust the order.

    HTH someone!

  45. I emailed JCrew and received a reply that all cardmembers should have received the 20% and free shipping code. Obviously something went wrong here. They did give me the phone number above to order and get the said offer. Any cardmember should be able to get this, as I was told. Also, I was in the store today and they were also doing 20% off, I think thru Saturday?

  46. I think it's common practice for retailers to give discounts to people who aren't best customers and try and move them up the ladder. The 'we miss you here's a discount, please come back' is a common tactic, whether that message is explicit or not. I think the problem with J Crew is twofold - not all retailers' customers' have a forum like this to share information so it's usually not a PR problem because people are in the dark. Also, many retailers treat their loyal customers so well that even if they knew others were getting codes it wouldn't matter - unfortunately I don't think that J Crew falls into that category :(

    ReplyDelete
  47. I just called up and they would NOT honor the 20% off code. They threw up a few smoke signals ("was it perhaps a code for Factory only", "we do have a promotion for our wedding items", etc.). As someone who has spent a significant amount of $ with JCrew over the years, I am pretty annoyed. Customer service fail!

  48. I received the 20% off code. I've been ordering like a demon over the last few months, probably at a rate of 2-3 orders per week. Yikes!

  52. late to the party - but a few comments, since I live in the industry:
    - historically, cataloguers (remember, this is where JCrew started) use RFM scores (Recency, Frequency, Monetary) to identify those most engaged. It's not enough to spend a lot, it's spend a lot, often, and within the last x time period to qualify
    - additionally, to measure the efficacy of a mailing, records are held out in what is called a control group (people that meet the same criteria as the mailing, but don't receive the offer). This allows for the measurement of incrementality, such as greater spend, an additional purchase, etc.
That might explain some of the targeting, as well as some of the people not receiving. Additionally, email addresses are often householded (meaning if I had 3 email addresses, all tied to my address, they know those are all me) - they might have chosen to contact all three to make sure the promo got through, although it's by no means best practice.

    HTH.
