J.Crew's Student & Educator Discount {changing again?}

I like to start by stating that I am very thankful for the educator and student discounts at J.Crew. It is a great incentive to shop with our favorite retailer.

I know the application (and explanation) of the student/ educator discount has varied over the years. The recent being that promotional items or universal promotions (for example, an additional 25% off everything) are not eligible, but specific promotions (for example, an additional 30% off sale) are eligible. Of course, full priced merchandise are eligible for the discount as well.

However, JCAs have been hearing and experiencing different situations at J.Crew. The following are a few examples of the feedback received when trying to use the discount:

"Thanks!" to Gretchen, who shared the following response from a J.Crew associate via email about J.Crew's student/ educator discount:
...Our student/teacher discount isn't usually applied to purchases that already have discounts or promotions applied. Because store exceptions are at the manager's discretion, additional savings are dependant on their approval. I apologize for this inconsistency, but we need to maintain a base level discount for our customers and are unable to freely apply as many discounts as possible, though eligible. Any additional savings received will be at the store managers discretion as individual stores have unique promotions and discounts week by week that we're unable to apply to online orders--this is also why the student/teacher discount is only eligible in-store. I apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.  Feel free to contact us with any future questions or concerns--we're always available by phone or email...
"Thanks!" to cagliari67 (in this post), who shared last Thursday the following:
...Have not been into a regular JC since the Discountgate episodes of 3 weeks ago. Still getting emails regarding this from JC central and from local managers. Policy still seems inconsistent. Apparently retail JCs here will no longer stack the educator discount with ANY other promo, including the extra % off sale. However the Factory stores are blithely carrying on, offering it on everything and promoting it verbally to everyone as they arrive. ...
"Thanks!" to math teacher (in this post), who shared last Thursday the following:
...My PS told me months ago that the teacher discount now only applied to full price items or items with a dollar amount discount. I appreciate that JC offers the discount, I just wish they would decide on a policy and stick with it. And that all b&m's would follow through. I emailed JC about some things (my PS has been asking me to email my complaints since they listen to us more than them) and I addressed this. I was told "As far as our student/teacher discount, this hasn’t changed - it’s still 15% off your entire order. If there’s another promotion going on like the current promotion TIMETOSHOP for 30% off full priced styles, we cannot combine the two. The only other time this discount cannot be applied is if it’s a branded partnership item or a wedding item." ...
It seems that J.Crew is changing the parameters of the student/ educator discount again.

If you have shopped recently (in the past week) at a J.Crew store, please let us know if you were able to apply your student/ educator discount.

Did you know about this change?
What are your thoughts on this latest change? Will this have an impact on your future purchases?

J.Crew Final Sale {nice update}

"Thanks!" to  many of you, including TeriLynn13 (in this post), who let us know that J.Crew has a really nice update to their Sale section online (click here) this morning. Lots of merchandise for everyone (2050+ for Women and 760+ for Men). Surprising that there is no additional percent off considering the abundance of merchandise. Maybe we can expect to see one soon?

It is worth noting that a lot of new items made it to sale. Also, some items are Final Sale and some are not (even those ending in $0.99). Just double check the item or checkout page to see if the item you are interested is included in Final Sale.

Lastly, several brick & mortar (B&M) stores are running an additional 25 to 30% off their Sale. (Not sure if it is "Final" in stores...) I was told that stores sent back their old sale merchandise and that the sale items in stores are more current (so that is why there is no additional 50% off). Many stores will price match the online sale price (before additional discount). It might be worth a stop to look around.

Did you check out the Sale section today? Were you able to snag any amazing deals? If so, please share! :)

J.Crew Sweater Sale: 20% Off for Men, Women, & Crewcuts!

"Thanks!" to many of you, including JSR (in this post), who shared the latest promotion from J.Crew with us.

J.Crew is offering 20% off select full-priced Sweaters for Women (click here to shop online) and Men (click here to shop online), as well as Crewcuts. This offer ends Tuesday, March 19, 2013. The fine print includes:
*Discount valid on the purchase of full-price sweaters in J.Crew stores and at jcrew.com from March 16, 2013, 12:01am ET through March 19, 2013, 11:59pm ET only. Online prices are as marked. Offer not valid in J.Crew Factory stores or at jcrewfactory.com. Offer cannot be applied to previous purchases and cannot be redeemed for cash or used in combination with any other offer. Offer not valid on third-party branded merchandise. Discount on in-store purchases will be automatically applied at the register. Offer valid in the U.S. and Canada only. Terms of offer are subject to change.
It is nice to see this offer being extending to both online and in-stores. My top pick still is the Crystal Necklace Sweater (item 86132; $148) now on sale for $118. I already love the color combination of rugby stripes in navy and emerald green. The crystal built-in necklace is a beautiful bonus!

In addition to the sweater sale, there are some other noteworthy in-store promotions at J.Crew:
  • 20% Off Women Tees & Tops {"Thanks!" to PeasAndCarrots & kitchy7 (in this post)}
  • 20% Off Cece Ballet Flats {"Thanks!" to kitchy7 (in this post)}
  • 30% Off Sale {"Thanks!" to ruffles & kitchy7 (in this post)}
It seems that the terms for the educator / student discount has been changed once again. As mentioned earlier in the month (refer to the "J.Crew's Student & Educator Discount {downgrade?}" post), it looked like the discount could no longer be applied to merchandise with any other additional percent off (like 30% off sale). According to many of your recent experiences, including Knit Yarns & ruffles (in this post), J.Crew will once again stack the discount on top of an additional percent off. Yey!

Will you be taking advantage of this promotion? Are there any Sweaters you are interested in getting? Is your local store offering additional promotions? Were you able to apply your student & educator discount in addition to a percent off? If so, please share!

J.Crew's Student & Educator Discount {downgrade?}

I like to start by stating that I am very thankful for the educator and student discounts at J.Crew. It is a great incentive to shop with our favorite retailer.

I know the application (and explanation) of the student/ educator discount has varied over the years. The recent being that promotional items (for example, a category like tees on sale for 20% off) are not eligible, but universal promotions (for example, an additional 30% off sale) are eligible. Of course, full priced merchandise are eligible for the discount as well.

"Thanks!" to ruffles (in this post), who shared the following news about J.Crew's student/ educator discount:
...I was told yesterday ... at the Northbrook IL store that JC will no longer stack the educator discount with any other % off in store...
"Thanks!" to E P (in this post), who shared last Thursday the following:
...did find out today that b&m stores will no longer apply the educator/ student discount on sale items, only full-priced. Apparently, this was a company wide decision announced yesterday....
It seems that maybe (?) J.Crew is changing the parameters of the student/ educator discount again. Not sure if this is the new company-wide policy that will take effect in all stores or perhaps rolling out slowly in some stores first or what.

If you have shopped recently (in the past week) at a J.Crew store, please let us know if you were able to apply your student/ educator discount.

J.Crew's Student & Educator Discount {upgrade}

A big "thanks!" to MJ who shared the following {great} news about J.Crew's student/ educator discount:
Today I visited my local J Crew in Las Vegas and the sales lady mentioned the teacher discount policy has been revised and the 15% discount can now be applied to sale items! They will not combine promotions, so it will not apply when they offer an additional 30% off. Great news!
I am very thankful for the educator and student discounts at J.Crew– and was a bit sad to see it get reduced over the past few years. (It use to be allowed on online & phone orders, in addition to in store purchases. It was also not limited to full priced items, as it included sale priced items as well as items receiving an additional percent off.)

This is wonderful news! Hopefully this news is being spread by store associates in all brick & mortar locations. :)

What are your thoughts on this latest change? Did you know about this change? Will this have an impact on your future purchases?

J.Crew Email: We love college students & teachers...

"Thanks!" to many of you who shared the following email from J.Crew this morning which reminds us about J.Crew's 15% discount for both students and teachers.

This discount use to apply to sale items, third party items, as well as online purchases at retail and factory stores. However, J.Crew has scaled it back considerably in the past year: (1) applies only to in-store purchases, (2) applies only to regular priced items, (3) can't be used with any other promotion, and (4) not applicable to third-party merchandise.

Even if your personal shoppers knows you are an educator/ student and applied it to online/ phone orders in the past, they will now tell you they can't apply it unless you are in a store for an associate to verify it. This is a hassle, but I am happy that they still offer it at all. :)

Did you receive this email? Were you aware of the changes in the discount's applicability?

News About J.Crew's Student & Educator Discount

A big "thanks!" to Debby (in this post) who shared the following news about J.Crew's student/ educator discount:
I was just told over the phone that as of Sept. 12 they will no longer apply the student/teacher discount over the phone so it will be in store only. Bummer!!
This is disappointing. :( I hate to see benefits and perks keep getting reduced. With that said, I am still very thankful for the educator and student discounts at J.Crew– and I hope they do not remove it altogether.

What are your thoughts on this latest change? Did you know about this change? Will this have an impact on your future orders?

J.Crew Email: J.Crew loves college students...

A big "thanks!" to Heather:D & Marissa who shared with us one of J.Crew's latest emails.

J.Crew is reminding us about their student and teacher (aka: educator) discount of 15% off. They are also very clear in the email that this discount is only for (1) full-price merchandise, and... (2) purchases made at their brick & mortar (B&M) stores.

As mentioned in a previous post (refer to the May 1st post: "News About J.Crew's Student and Educator Discount {what's the deal?}"), J.Crew recently changed the discount so it would apply only to full-priced items. (Before it could be applied to any item, regardless of promotion.)

However, I was not aware that this discount is limited to in-store only use. I was under the impression it could be used for online and phone orders too, as long as it's a full priced item. {sigh} Maybe that is still the case, and the email forgot to mention that the discount can be applied for online & phone orders. {fingers crossed!}

Did you receive this email? Were you aware of the recent changes in the discount's applicability? Have you been able to use the discount for your recent online and/or phone orders? If so, please share! :)

J.Crew's Red Phone Changes {downgrade}

A big "thanks!" to Sydneygirl (in this post) who shared the following news about J.Crew's red phone:

"...they will no longer allow you to have both free shipping from the red phone on full price items AND your teacher/student discount. You can only have one or the other. The red phone used to be their big thing they promoted vs other stores. Now they are taking away their discounts all over the place. I was told this was a new policy."

This is sad J.Crew-related news. It seems as though the benefits and perks keep getting reduced. With that said, I am still very thankful for the teacher/educator and student discounts at J.Crew- and I hope they do not remove it altogether. Especially since the retail industry is still hurting (just look at retailers like Eddie Bauer, who recently filed for bankruptcy protection).

What are your thoughts on this latest change? Did you know about this change? Will this have an impact on your future orders?

News About J.Crew's Student and Educator Discount {what's the deal?}

A big "thanks!" to many of you in the "Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?" post, who brought to our attention some changes to the Student and Educator Discount that J.Crew offers.

Debby let us know the following: "I was in a JCrew store last night and was not allowed to use my student discount on sale items. The store manager showed me the memo saying that effective 4/30, the student and teacher discount is only good on full price items." Anon at 9:52 AM also mentioned that "...I was checking out last night at Tysons with my red card, so I did not mention the student dicount, but the person checking out beside me was denied for the student discount on their sale purchases...I was shocked!"

However, Anon at 10:35 AM mentioned that she "...called CS at 1-800 and they told me the terms of the student/teacher discount have NOT changed, ie, it can be used for sale items". Moreover, Anon at 11:00 AM found that she "... was just able to place an order over the phone stacking the 20%-off promo and the 15% student/educator discount. Maybe the new policy only applied to in-store items?"

So this all seems a bit confusing, right? ;) Anon at 12:02 PM shares some information on the situation by stating the following: "I think the restriction on the 15% student promo applies only to certain stores, probably ones that are located in large university towns. My B&M is in new haven CT and a month ago I was given the same memo about the discount only being good on full-priced items. when I'd asked to speak to the manager, I told her I'd been able to place an order online and at other jcrew stores using the discount, she said the promotion applied only to that specific store, that the decision had come from corporate, and that other jcrew stores as well as online orders would still honor the 15% discount...needless to say I've been in j crew MUCH less these days, though it's hard since my dorm is literally right across the street and I can always see the new displays".

Since getting J.Crew's 25% off Red Card, I haven't used my educator discount (and therefore didn't notice whether changes have been made or not). However, I will now pay close attention to see if the discount will be applied to regular and sale priced items. :)

If you are visiting your local J.Crew store this weekend & using your student/ educator discount, do you mind sharing that information (i.e. location of store) with us? It would be great to have a list of stores accepting and not accepting the discount (which may help us determine which stores to visit). :)

Clarification on J.Crew Teacher & Student Discount :)

"Thanks!" to Anonymous in Illinois:) who shared with us the following response from J.Crew after she recently emailed them about the application of the teacher discount:

We apologize for the confusion regarding the application of the teacher discount to your order #

Your order is eligible for the discount, and it will be applied. Please note this credit will not be reflected on your packing slip or in your initial charge. It will be applied as a separate transaction to your Credit Card once your order ships from our warehouse.

We would like to take this opportunity to give you the eligibility requirements of combining the teacher discount with other promotions.

If the promotion already on the order is good for everything on jcrew.com, i.e. a global promotion, the teacher discount is not eligible to be used on the same order.

For promotions on specific groups of merchandise, such as the current EXTRA20; which applies only to Final Sale items, both promotions may be combined. We hope this will make determining the eligibility of future orders a bit simpler.

Again, we apologize that you were given the incorrect answer regarding the combination of promotions in our earlier email.

If we can be of further assistance, please let me know by responding directly to this email or through my contact information which I have provided below.

Best

I honestly did not know when the discount could and could not be applied- so this email does help clarify that issue. I also want to add that I really *appreciate* that J.Crew (and other retailers) offer a discount for teachers and students considering that they don't have to- it is nice of them. :)

Were you aware of the requirements for the teacher and student discounts? Have you heard or experienced something differently? If so, please share with us your experiences with the teacher and student discount. (P.S. If there are any J.Crew associates reading this, we would love to hear your perspective on this topic!) :)

J.Crew Policies: What Are They? ;)

This weekend, I went to several J.Crew stores in the area to take advantage of the additional 50% off final sales. I ended the weekend feeling disappointed with my J.Crew shopping experiences (which normally are wonderful for me). Without going into too much detail, I essentially felt like some policies were changed and not clearly expressed to customers (and even to associates)- leaving me frustrated and less inclined to shop.

Therefore, I thought it might be worthwhile to share the following tidbits (which other members of the blog have shared before as well) to make the shopping experience a bit easier. :)

First, if you are at a brick and mortar (B&M) store and an item the store carries is on sale, but is priced higher than the same exact item online, the store WILL price match the online sale price. Moreover, the store's "additional percent off" can be applied to the item with the online matched price. For example: a blouse is for sale at your local store for $60, but J.Crew online is selling the same blouse for $30. In this case, the store can match the online price. Also, if the local store is offering an additional 50% off while J.Crew online is offering an additional 30% off, you should be able to receive the 50% off the $30 blouse since you are physically purchasing the item in the store.

Second, if you are using the red phone to order a sale item that the store does not carry (either the store does not carry the item at all, not in your size or not in your color), then you are NOT able to apply the in-store "additional percent off" to the red phone order. However, if there is an "additional percent off" promotion currently running online, then the red phone associates can apply the online "additional percent off" on your order.

Lastly, several J.Crew stores are discontinuing the application of the student/educator discount in addition to the "additional percent off" sale even though (1) those same stores use to allow both the discount and sale to be applied and (2) there are other stores in neighboring towns that still allow both the discount and sale to be applied. The main reason cited is that the "additional percent off" cannot be combined with any other offers. However, I do not know if the educator discount is considered an ongoing "offer" or a policy. (Unfortunately, it's not clearly defined online, as shown in the image.)

Did I get those policies correct? If not, please feel free to clarify any points made. :) What are some recent policies that you learned about? Have you experienced any policy changes?

J.Crew's Teacher & Student Discount

"Thanks!" to Julie who shared with us the following email response from J.Crew about the teacher's (and student's) discount:
We were able to review the current way promotions are supposed to be applied, since you have received correspondence from us containing conflicting information. We are able to provide the following information:

Promotional coupons are not combinable with any other discount. If, however, the coupon discount already on your order amounted to less than 15%, we would be happy to apply an adjustment of the difference to raise the overall savings to the 15% level you expect as a student/teacher. If a currently used promotion amounts to a value greater than that which you would receive using your 15% discount, it is to your advantage to keep the current promotion rather than replace it with the 15% standing discount.

We sincerely apologize that this information conflicts with recent information sent to you. We appreciate your business and certainly understand your concerns with not being able to combine coupons and have noted this as we appreciate your feedback and it is possible in the future that this could change.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know by responding to this email at contactus@jcrew.com or calling a J.Crew Associate at 1-800-562-0258.
I truly appreciate J.Crew (and other retailers) offering a discount for teachers and students (it really is nice of them). Hopefully J.Crew policies will become a bit more uniform throughout their stores and online. :)
