J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Has anyone seen or purchased BD781 Liberty blouse with stars? Sizing and if you like it? Gifting to someone thanks

    1. I haven't seen the star version, but I tried on the same cut of shirt in the poppy Liberty print. Runs TTS. I have to say...with all of the ties and the ruffles on the cuff and the volume of the sleeves I felt a bit like a pirate!

    2. @Alyssa, Thanks so much. I don’t think this will make a good gift. I’m not certainly not into the pirate look however the person I’m gifting it to may have a different opinion. Those sleeves look a little ridiculous.

  2. Styling the red Willa velvet blazer on the blog today. Sizing runs big in my opinion, so I sized down one size. Paired my look with last year's stewart plaid shirt with velvet dots.

  3. I finally got a decent price (magic hour) on the wool cable knit crewneck sweater (BB408) I wanted to try. Just got it today, such a disappointment! TTS in my usual M, I liked the length and the sleeves were actually long enough for my long arms. But the thin, stretchy blend (almost 50% acrylic) made *crazy* static when I took it off. Living in a dry cold place I can't keep it. Also the color I got (hthr muslin -- ivory) was a little bit see through. I tried it on over a cobalt blue t shirt and front of my sweater looked blue from the t shirt showing through! So it could only be layered over white or ivory. The little puff sleeve was cute, but I have kind of broad shoulders to begin with so it made me look broader. Overall just feels super cheap, stretchy and thin. And I *know* it will pill. I'm puzzled by all the positive reviews but I think maybe younger people have never really worn a good quality item so they think this is acceptable? I think that's what happens with a lot of madewell reviews. People gush about something and I try and and I'm like...ick. :P. Thank goodness it wasn't final sale (as it currently is).

    1. i actually bought this sweater and i like it more than i thought i would BUT...

i only paid $38. no way i'd pay more. especially for a blend sweater like this.

i tried it on in my "normal" size small when it first came out and it looked awful. i went back and was able to try on an XS and that made a world of difference... especially in the sleeves and shoulders.

i also bought the gray color which i think helps if i layer anything under it... which i usually at least wear a tee shirt under my sweaters. i've worn it a couple of times now and no tee peak-a-boos and no pilling.

    2. I really avoid acrylic. I accidentally bought a silk blend mockneck last year and it’s ok but a much thinner knit. Any of those soft sweater blends from crew or Madewell I’ve purchased look shoddy very quickly.
I think some of the younger generation treats clothing differently. My 19 year old was looking at something from what I consider a young store and my 23 year old said the item looked like fast fashion, so maybe there’s hope yet.

    3. Like Suz Has, I avoid acrylic. I actually seem to be allergic to it as I break out in hives. Of course I’m also allergic to wool and cashmere. I wear a long sleeve tee underneath my wool sweaters. Cotton is the only sweater fiber that doesn’t bother me at all.

    4. I think my expectations were way out of line. I was hoping for a thick, warm fisherman type sweater, haha. Also agree with Miss JR that it did run big/loose. It's crazy that I am taking a size S in sweaters and sweatshirts sometimes. Anyway, thinking of my out of line expectations and what I *really* wanted from that sweater, yesterday I went to the Aran sweater website and ordered one of those Irish fisherman merino wool sweaters :)

    5. @ julielion96 Have you checked L.L. Bean? I’ve purchased some very nice fisherman sweaters there. Lands’ End also has some decent sweaters, but the fit tends to be boxy.

    6. We went to Ireland for thanksgiving five years ago. I wanted to get a wool fisherman sweater but found it so itchy. That was the year JCrew came out with that fair isle that was sort of on top of a fisherman sweater. I ended up getting that instead but the acrylic in it really bothered me so I let it go.
I’d be better off with an itchy wool fisherman sweater from Ireland.

    7. I had one of the huge wool fisherman sweaters in high school that someone brought me from Scotland. I wore it at least once a week all winter long (but usually with turtlenecks because I do remember it being a little itchy). Jeanne, I did get one of the LL Bean cotton mixed cable sweaters this year in ivory and it's great. So easy for wash/wear. I love 100% cotton sweaters, have noticed gap and a few places slowly increasing their cotton offerings, so maybe this is a good sign? Of course there is good, heavyweight cotton and then there is lower quality cotton that stretches out and fades :(

  4. I tried the tall grey bootcut jeans, BA639, a few weeks ago. It was on promo. Of course a week or two later it went on sale, plus I was able to add 60% off. I don’t have grey jeans, the quality is good and the length is not short. I went down a size though.

I recently tried BD619, the balloon sleeve cable knit sweater, because I like the way its styled on the website. The styling is kinda obvious but I really like the look. One review states it feels scratchy. I didn’t find it to be a problem but I’m sure some will. I got the blue grey color but I went down a size. The balloon sleeves just looked enormous in my regular size. I wish it was a half inch longer but I think it’s doable. I was actually really pleased with this sweater. I also saw the pink and it’s a nice NOT washed out pink/peach, if that makes sense.
