JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Wearing the giraffes shirt dress (AR647) from last autumn for the first time, and am failing to think of other ways to wear this without looking pregnant. I went up a size due to reviews saying it was right across shoulders and bust, so it is particularly loose in the body on top of having a loose oversized in the waist and skirt. Also the drop waist kind of puffs out the skirt and adds volume. I’m wearing it with an older style khaki going out blazer right now. I’ve tried pairing with cardigans and the drop waist makes it look like i’m trying to hide a pregnancy! The drop waist also sticks out if I wear a sweater on top, also looks like Im pregnant. A belt doesn’t work bc it’s so oversized at the waist. How do I style this thing??

    1. How about a long sweater vest with a belt on top? Or a long cardigan with a belt on top

    2. Did you try a wide belt at the waist? Depending on your proportions that might work better than a thin belt. I do remember Lynn saying she had to get it tailored.

    3. If I get it tailored, Id have to basically redo the whole dress. It is wide from the bust down and gets flouncier at the skirt.
I don’t have any wide belts so haven’t tried it. Long cardigan and long vest with belt makes me look newly pregnant and trying to hide it.

    4. Yes, I did have it tailored but I had sized down and it was large in the bust area so it wasn’t a complete makeover. I think I’m taller than you and the rest of the dress is more in proportion now and looks very nice. Not overkill. I like this dress and wear it with tights and a longer coat suede booties or ballet flats and even a pair of sneakers but that’s not the point. I don’t think I would like any belt with this style dress at least for myself but for you it might look nice. Have you considered bringing it to a Nordstrom near you and having one of their tailors look at it and you could try a belt. I’m sure you know the drill about Nordstrom free alterations if you’re a cardholder. You might surprised as to what a good tailor do and better if it’s for free. Good luck.

    5. Thanks Lynn. I’m not a cardholder at Nordstrom (since it wasn’t in NYC until 2 years ago). I think the fit is beyond what a tailor can do. I pulled it in to see how much fabric would have to be taken to fit it so you can see the shape of my body below and it’s about 4-5 inches flat. Which is 8-10 inches! I am not a fan of belting this style either. To my surprise I got a lot of compliments at work for it - maybe wearing it with a blazer is the only way to go.
