"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. While I do like my two Signet bags, I feel the handbag options at J Crew are really lacking. I like a bigger bag and cross body styles aren't roomy enough and are a little too casual. I really miss the days of beautiful leather, non-logo'd satchels every season at J Crew.

    1. I'm glad I grabbed a mid-size tote in 2016 because it seems like it was the end of an era. I can't recall the name but it's a beautiful thick leather and has snaps to make it a bit smaller; mine is bright yellow and it also came in a bright blue. It was my first J.Crew bag and by the looks of how things are going, likely my last.

    2. I was just thinking the same thing! I need a black clutch for events and they don't have anything like what I wanted. Finally found something on the Velvet by Graham & Spencer site. Madewell does continue to have nice leather goods but still didn't have the type of larger clutch I was looking for.

    3. I'm in the market for a luggage/cognac cross body but I can't bring myself to buy a signet. I know a lot of ladies love them but the leather feels just awful to me. The Madewell leather looks better imo (although not as nice as it used to) but the shapes aren't thrilling me. I'll have to see if Velvet has any options.

  2. Oh and a Factory vent. Why is the website still featuring "how we do summer" and "red white and new?" Cmon J Crew it's almost October, update your homepage.

  3. I know it's been said to death, but the shipping situation is ridiculous. I caved and placed an order on J. Crew on Saturday for the Liberty club collar shirt since it appeared to be selling out quickly during the day. I also placed an order from Shopbop for the Madewell Elinor loafers that same day. The loafers had free shipping and arrived at my door yesterday (they are a love for me!) Meanwhile, my J.Crew order which did not have free shipping or free returns still has yet to be shipped out. As more companies adjust to meet their customers growing online demands, J. Crew's slow and expensive shipping issues continue to boggle my mind.

    1. For sure, they have gone backwards with this. And the other thing is, why are they trying to drive traffic to their b&m locations with free shipping to the stores? It's just a huge pain.

    2. I actually really like ship to store. I use that option with other retailers. I live in an urban area, so I always try to to have my packages held anyway, as theft is super common. Many retailers ship to store a lot quicker, including JCrew. So I get it faster and can pick it up when I'm ready. Also, if I need to return it I'm already there.

  4. I know it's sold out, but for anyone who was wondering, the velvet wrap dress is a total bust. I tried mine on last night and it fit like a huge bathrobe. The top won't stay closed and it's just very poorly tailored. I got the 2 and it's still way too much fabric for me at 5'10". Why can't they get sizing right anymore??

    1. I suspect there will be return popbacks. I just returned mine as the top part was too big on me, though I thought that was because I am short waisted and the wrap part was hitting the wrong spot on me. However it does look lovely on jcrewmycrew on IG.

    2. Oh Cass, I was just thinking of you b/c I know you purchased this one as well. What a bummer! I agree that this dress looked absolutely lovely on jrewmycrew! I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, either, American Observer. I've had so many sizing issues w/ JC -- constantly questioning what my size is supposed to be. :-(

    4. I meant to say thanks to both Cass for validating my disappointment with the dress and TM93 for sympathizing! Ha. I do think that the model in the photo was pinned or taped or both. There's just no way to stop the top from opening.

    5. I also found the silver color was not flattering on my fair skin, so there was that too. I unfortunately get disappointed by a lot of styles that look great on others because I have a short torso, childbearing hips and long legs and there's just also something that doesn't work! Pants too short in the inseam, too high in the waist, dresses too long in the torso. :P

  5. The promos (or lack of on sale) big update and it looks like nothing is moving. gee J Crew I wonder why ? should I really pay more for an item today than I would have 2 weeks ago?

    1. I suspect they might have a better promo starting tomorrow.

    2. Looks like NO promo now...*sad trombone.* I should be happy, as it helps with my resolve to shop less.

  6. To all JCAs who bought any of the boiled wool coats: What's your take on the fabric. Do you think it's likely to pill or quickly get worn out?
I received my Daphne in camel last night and it made me think about pilling.

    1. I love mine. No worries IMHO. Mine is in navy.

    2. saw in store. it is very light weight. a fall coat for sure.
It was tts but cut very straight. did nothing for me. would wear un buttoned if purchased. not crazy about the boring beige but the red is bright and the navy is the classic one. IMO

    3. I just received the Wrap Coat in Boiled Wool in moss and the fabric seems lightweight but very nice and soft right out of the box. Hard to tell if it would pill quickly without a wear or two. Unfortunately, it's going back because the dropped shoulders are awful, but that's another story.

    4. I am returning the boiled wool wrap coat in blue. Gorgeous color but looked like a bathrobe in me.

  7. Did anybody else get a "Here's what's in your shopping bag" e-mail today with items that are SO not (now or ever) in your shopping bag? Oh, 'Crew!

  8. I know there were pages and pages of complaints about the various JC discounts and promos over the past few months but I just can't image that someone, anyone at JC HQ thought that these current promos were the answer!!!! I know I was not happy with the price adjustment process EVERY OTHER DAY, but no discount or this "up to..." promo is not making me a happy JC camper. UGH! And I agree, where have all those beautiful leather bags gone??? They must be hidden for the winter roll out.

    1. I got a 20% off card with my package yesterday. It's good until sometime in October, I think? When did they start doing that? How about they just give us free shipping??

      Delete
    2. I hope there is a discount card included with my delivery tomorrow. Fingers crossed! :)

      Delete
    3. The 15-20% off cards are sent in random lucky boxes--maybe 1 in 5 or so? If you're buying a coat or something it's way more valuable than free ship!

I for one never complained about constant promos--bring them on! I'd rather have the discounts available and email for PAs than not have them.

    4. Gotn2 packages this week and no coupon... ugh...

  10. Question - does anyone know anything about the belted pink pants shown on the front of the new accessories catalog?

  11. Hi,
This is a very nice website. I am so happy to visit your website. I am trying to tell everybody to visit your website.
    Thanks.

  12. This isn't a vent, but I figured more people would see this post here. I used to work at J.Crew in email customer service, and I just want to let you all know that my fellow coworkers and I would read this every day. Please know you are being heard even though we don’t have the power to change things. And I agree what most of the complaints here, and wish things would change at the Crew. Tip: the email/chat customer service is nicer, and have more training then the phone people.

    3. Yes, thank you for the tips! I've always had excellent customer service through email. I really appreciate the cs at Jcrew.

  13. That moment when a popback slips through your proverbial fingers, aka cart, while you're trying to check out. Sad face.

On another note- any reviews on the dreamy cotton pant? They look great for post-partum for those first few weeks/month.

    1. Bummer about your popback. I really like the dreamy cotton pant and think they would be great for lounging in after having a baby. I find them to be pretty long and they run tts to a little big. I would even suggest the pajama set. I had both of my babies in the winter and I lived in these sets with a nursing tank underneath. Or, if I got too warm I could just take remove the top. It was nice for when you are in the hospital, when you have guests, or during the middle of the night feedings.

    2. Thanks Lauren! They do look perfect. I have plenty of mismatched pajamas but I know in those early days after taking a shower I'll want to feel somewhat cute and a nice pj set will help. Maybe I'll go with the set instead of just the pants and wear a tank under like you suggested. Thanks again!!

  14. I can't believe J crew still doesn't have any promo! Some things got reduced a bit more on sale, but others jumped back to full price. They are getting as bad as factory with these price games. Glad I placed an order in late August when they had 40% off. Some things like the ruffles sleeve sweater and heart tippi are back to full price again. No orders for me until they have a better sale.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Seems they are going the Madewell way? Fewer promos even with new rollouts. Although I don't shop at Madewell enough to know whether they play the pricing game as JC does. Seeing a lot of pop backs this AM in the sale section but I also refuse to buy old merch without a promo. I feel like I'm in a battle of wills with JC now.

    1. I feel the same way. because I really do not need it "now" I can wait for a promo.

    2. sale section is big (compared to a few weeks ago) but nothing seems to be moving. gee J Crew I wonder why....

    3. With the crazy unseasonable weather we're having (mid-80's over the next 7 days, in upstate NY...whaaaaat!), there's definitely nothing I need now. My jeans and sweater coats are waiting! I suppose I could spring for an OTS, cold shoulder or one-shoulder top just to have something new (LOL)...

      Delete
    4. Honestly, there is nothing I need. Fewer promos is all the motivation I need to not shop.

  16. The factory website is a disaster. I added several new arrival items to my wish list yesterday that are just gone today.

    1. I should edit to add, gone as in no longer available for sale on the website, not removed from my wish list. Like, where did they go?

  17. I just returned over $400 worth of clothes at JCrew because I always order multiple sizes and colors (especially when on sale), but I only end up keeping a reasonable amount. I was a little annoyed at the sales associate who on two occasions asked "I wonder what was wrong with this" in a pretty snarky way. It was almost as if she wasn't actually asking me because she didn't actually look at me. I almost shot something back but held my tongue. Ugh

    1. I've had this too, particularly with a large swim order with the same pieces in multiple sizes. It's not like they even carry swim in store! It makes me not want to shop in that location because they are so snobby and do the same mumbling under their breath stuff. On the bright side, the 5th Ave. location in NYC is never rude to me, but it requires a half hour each way walk from my office.

      Delete
    2. This was in the Soho store. I agree the 5th Avenue store is great but they do t let me use my teacher discount on sale whereas the Columbus Circle store has. So for in store pickup I go to 5th Ave and I try to get up to columbus Circle but rarely do. At least we have more than one location to go to.

      Delete
    3. Well, they always ask me what was wrong with it and I always say, "sizing was off- too big" and they always mark it as "changed mind" so what is the point of even asking??

      Delete
  18. I went to Jcrew today for the first time in a while to pick a couple of orders. Both items I ordered were marked down by 50% this morning. When I ordered them (about a week ago) they were both full priced with 30% off. I was still able to get a price adjustment but this is why I never buy anything full price. Both tops are long sleeved and it is still in the 80's where I live (and is supposed to be all next week too) so I won't be wearing them soon.
Anyway, I also finally tried the rugby polo and I didn't like it. It is too short! I am only 5'4" but I do have a longish torso. Also, I didn't love the olive color as much as I thought a would. A little too yellow maybe? The reviews imply this top runs large but I disagree. I would say it's tts to slightly small.
Their was no extra % off in the sale section but they had it sectioned off into $69.99 and under, $49.99 and under, etc.... Maybe it's just me but I thought that was a little tacky. The sale section was jam packed!

  19. I just returned $1300 in merchandise! A plethora of issues: ill-fitting clothes and shoes, cheap fabrics, etc. I’m just about ready to be done with the Crew. I did end up keeping a couple of basics but that’s it. So disappointing.
