J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Collection Collarless Leather Jacket (B7442) - A very simple, classic jacket. Reviewed online describing the leather as being buttery soft, and it is. It's lightweight, and is meant to be a spring leather jacket. I ordered size 0, and there's room (36B chest) to layer a sweater during winter. It's boxy for sure. The length of the sleeves are shorter on the model but it's bracelet length on me which is perfect since I'm petite. A good purchase!

Collection Collarless Leather Jacket - Cayman Blue, Size 0 (B9872) - Thick leather. Size 0 fits fine, boxy cut so there is room to layer. The color is unique; between a muted blue and forest green. The hardware color is rose gold; not sure if it compliments the color of the jacket. One thing that bothered me is the way the sleeves are stitched. With me being petite and not having broad shoulders, the upper part of the sleeves did not lay right and I felt like a football player with padded upper arms. The sleeves are roomy. Its that one flaw that made me choose the black jacket instead. If you are average size, this might work out for you. Promo price + the % off, is a good deal.

    1. I echo JSR's review. In ordered both too, and found myself wishing deeply that the cayman blue jacket had been cut the same as the black. I love the black enough that I'm seriously contemplating keeping it despite already owning two other black leatger jackets! This one is very chic, very sophisticated. One could wear it as semi-formal wear. The footballer/varsity jacket look if the cayman blue jacket can be mitigated a bit if you're willing to get artsy with the jacket: pull the straps and drawstrings tight, let it puff up artistically. But, no question, the more bulk you wear under it, the better it will sit...and that limits it's wearability to just one season (fall) in my book. Bummer.

    2. Hi Maqsad! Maybe if I had ordered size 00 of the Cayman Blue...it might fit better than size 0. We'll see. If it's not sold out yet, I may reorder size 00 in the near future.

So I just received the 2rd order of this Collarless Leather Jacket (B7442), size 00 - I think I prefer the fit of this. It's still boxy. There's still room to layer. I compared both sizes, and I like size 00's fit of the sleeves; its better than size 0.

I've never owned a leather jacket before, a duh question, but do leather jackets stretch out, like shoes and pants do (because of stretching)?

    3. Hi JSR! In my experience, leather jackets don't really stretch out. Unless you're sleeping in them! I ordered 00 myself. I think you and I are usually the same size, and I totally recommend a 00.

  2. Has anyone else noticed sizing issues lately? I tried on 00s at the store recently and they fit like 2s and 4s I have at home- that I can no longer wear. I feel like I've been sized out when the only things that my SA gives me to try on and that fit are from Crewcuts! Not that I haven't shopped Crewcuts before, but there's a world of difference between buying the occassional boys button down and being handed a girls drawstring flippy skirt. I'm graduating law school next month- Crewcuts isn't going to 'cut' it for an office wardrobe.

  3. I'll add my review of the Collection Collarless Leather Jacket (B7442). I am also petite (5'2" and usually a 00 in J. Crew). I ordered this in a 00 and I think it might be too boxy for me. The fit is great through the arms and shoulders but I'm not sure I like the somewhat bulky look of the body.

I also ordered the Collection leather pencil skirt (A773). It appears to be sold out now but was a great deal on sale with the promo. I am usually between a 0 and 00 in pencil skirts and went with a 00 in this and was happy I did. It fits well without being too tight and hits just below my knee which I like.

  4. Oh and OT but there's an article in the NY Post about Jenna and J. Crew:

    1. Good article. Thanks for sharing, Susan.

Jenna needs to tone it down a bit...

Speaking of Mickey, CFDA just honored Mickey with The Founders Award, for making JCrew a success in the fashion biz.

  6. I reviewed a JCrew necklace (Full Spectrum in Vivid Ink) today on my blog, and discussed a dress that was issued last fall (Collection Wool Boucle in navy).
Very pleased that I've found a couple of lovely things at JCrew these last few months... especially since otherwise the spring/summer offerings have not interested me.

  7. I got the structured mini skirt in sweet persimmon (item B9106) last week. It had sold out in my size (6) a few times, but I finally managed to get it when it popped back. I'm so happy I got it. After so many recent disappointments at J.Crew, the skirt is absolutely lovely. It's a heavier weight twill fabric, the persimmon color is vibrant, but not too bright and the fit is great. Usually, J.Crew skirts are too big in the waist on me, but too tight in the hips. Not this one. I think it's a lot nicer than the other pleated skirt they have on offer this spring, which has an exposed zipper and comes in colors that are way too bright.

  8. Madewell Trapeze Crop-Top in Stripe Mix (#C0876). This had a strange fit. The neck was so high, and the body was so wide. The shape didn't work for a crop top, IMO, but I'm sure someone will make it work. The crop is not too-too short. It was more the shape that I didn't care for.

Madewell Slub Pocket Tee (#B9030). If this were a bit longer, I'd have loved it. The white is thick enough to not be see-through. But it was slightly too short for me.

Madewell Embroidered Tangier Tee (#C4616). Very cute. You can probably size down.

Madewell Chambray Tunic Dress (#B9956). Very roomy in the body. Cute, though.

Birkenstock Madrid Sandals. J. Crew offers them in the new catalog, but I tried them on at Madewell. I can't find them on either web site, so I don't have a style number. I tried on the all-black ones and also the all-white ones (even the footbed is the same color as the upper). They are very light-weight, and I'm not sure what they're made of but they felt like a comfortable plastic? I'm a size 8 in shoes and often a size 7.5 in sandals (sometimes, rarely, a size 7 in flip-flops). I tried on the size 37 and 38. 37 was the right size for me. They only come in whole sizes. I could probably have made do with the 38s, but 37 was better. I want to note that the new J. Crew catalog also offers these with what looks like a traditional Birkenstock footbed with different colored uppers. Those seem to cost a lot more than the all-white and all-black ones, which feel kind of like a shower slide (I liked them, though).

  9. J. Crew Collarless Short-Sleeve Popover (#C2208). I don't know how these look so good on the model shots and so bad on me. On me, it was big and shapeless. No bueno.

    J. Crew Perfect Shirt in Crinkle Blue Plaid (# C7982). This is a sleeper, you might not bother taking it in to try on, but it's nice. It's a Perfect Shirt, and we haven't seen many of those from J. Crew lately.

    J. Crew Drapey Chambray Popover (#B8766). This is not fitted; very roomy through the body but still looks like it fits on top because the shoulders are set (it's sleeveless, so I guess they couldn't drop the shoulders ha!). I liked.

    J. Crew Linen Cross Stripe Tee (#C5073). This is great! Classic but interesting without being ridiculous.

  11. I purchased a new item (that was not a tissue tee) for the first time in a long time at a store. Cannot find the tee online yet. It is striped with three quarter length sleeves and has a side slit on both sides with sequins. My first sequin purchase (shocking, I know). It is ivory with olive stripes. I usually wear a small but purchased this in a medium to wear over a thin tank or tee.

  14. Marcie Suede Wedges in Dark Cognac: soooo fabulous. This is more like the J. Crew I remember. They even smelled amazing when I opened the box! Like really high quality suede/leather should. The color and quality are lovely. A great take on the wedge/suede/70's styling that is so hot now.
