Coming Soon! Madewell at Net-a-Porter & Nordstrom

"Thanks!" to many of you, including twentysomethingsimple (in this post), as well as cousy (in this post), who let us know some super exciting news from Madewell. The following is from Fashionista (click here to read in its entirety):
Madewell to Sell at Net-a-Porter, Nordstrom and Internationally
Head designer Somsack Sikhounmuong talks about the expansion of J.Crew's sister brand.
By Chantal Fernandez
February 6, 2015

J.Crew's sales growth may be slowing, but that hasn't stopped Madewell from dreaming bigger things. The casual, denim-focused retailer, a division of the J.Crew Group, has outlined its plans for a major expansion on all fronts: starting this month, it will sell some of its goods through third-party retailers -- specifically, Nordstrom and Net-a-Porter -- and plans to open 15 more standalone stores by the end of the year. The brand will also begin shipping internationally through its e-commerce site.

As early as Feb. 24, over 70 Madewell pieces will go on sale at Nordstrom.com, followed by arrivals in 15 Nordstrom stores on March 6. On Feb. 25,  Net-a-Porter will begin selling 50 Madewell products. International shipping will be available on Madewell.com sometime before year's end. The first shipments to both retailers have focused heavily on denim.

"We’re being really careful," said Somsack Sikhounmuong, Madewell's head of design. "We’ve talked about it and thought about it before, and we’ve finally found partners who will help us grow in the right way." The 'we' he refers to undoubtedly includes Madewell founder and CEO of the J. Crew Group, Mickey Drexler. "This, for us, is really a new beginning," said Drexler to WWD. "I wouldn’t call it necessarily a wholesale distribution. I would just call it distribution that makes sense from a customer point of view, from a brand point of view, from a Nordstrom and Net-a-Porter point of view."

This new beginning comes after a period of strong growth. In the last three years, Madewell has opened 54 stores, bringing the current total to 85. Sales were up 32 percent in the first three quarters of 2014 compared to the previous year, in contrast to J.Crew, which saw a 6 percent increase in sales (and a 2 percent decrease in comparable sales) during that same period.

For Sikhounmuong and his team, growing in the right way means not sacrificing the Madewell aesthetic. "We definitely pride ourselves for the in-store experience," he said. "[With Nordstrom] we’ve had proper meetings, we’ve gone through styling to make sure things felt Madewell still. They’ve been more than happy and more than cooperative in making sure our vision was carried through." Sikhounmuong also said that the way Nordstrom presents its Topshop collection positively influenced Madewell's decision to create a similar partnership.

Madewell's arrangement with Net-a-Porter is modeled after the one J.Crew and the site established in 2010. "Net-a-Porter has proven to be an valuable partner to J.Crew, there’s no reason to mess with a formula that works," said Sikhounmuong in a follow-up email.

J.Crew, as any regular shopper knows, is an aggressive discounter -- but Madewell promotions are rarer. When asked if there were concerns about lack of control over discounting at these new retail partners, Sikhounmuong said, "it is the nature of doing that kind of business, wholesaling, so we get it."

As for the company's day to day business, Sikhounmuong insists the new partnerships haven't changed his work. "I think it's an opportunity to meet new customers and service new customers," he says. "Time will tell, maybe in the future there may be projects here and there between the two us, but in terms of in my head, day to day, it hasn’t changed." Madewell fans should be comforted by the designer's focus on consistency and hopefully larger exposure won't necessitate design changes down the road.

"One step at a time," said Sikhounmuong. Well, in this case, more like three steps.

Update: An earlier version of the article stated that Madewell's partnership with Nordstrom and Net-a-Porter marked the first time the brand has been sold by a different retailer. Madewell has been sold through Shopbop since 2009.
This is super exciting news indeed! I think it's great to see Madewell teaming up with Net-a-Porter and Nordstrom. Both businesses focus on high-customer satisfaction and offer superior products. Nice move indeed!

I also think there is something to be said about Madewell versus J.Crew sales during the same quarter. (Referring to the following quote: "Sales were up 32 percent in the first three quarters of 2014 compared to the previous year, in contrast to J.Crew, which saw a 6 percent increase in sales (and a 2 percent decrease in comparable sales) during that same period.") I am one of those shoppers that have seen my purchases at Madewell {significantly} increase in the past few months. Meanwhile, my purchases at J.Crew have not been the same compared to previous years. (Still shopping at J.Crew, just not as much.) Instead, I have been gravitating to Madewell's jeans (hello legging jean, never looking back!), bags (transport tote, I am in love!), accessories (can't stop wearing the blanket scarf!) and shoes (billie boot, amazing!). At least my money is staying within the J.Crew family. ;)

What are your thoughts on this latest Madewell news? Are you surprised to see the brand being sold at other outlets? If so, please share! :)

Is J.Crew Coming to Paris?

The following is from the Fashion One's Fashion Blog (click here to read in its entirety):
J.Crew eyes France for expansion
By Fashion One
November 6, 2014

The American retailer is continuing to grow in Europe, expanding out from London to the French capital.

J.Crew is soon to land in Paris with two new stores set to arrive in the city's famed Marais district (one for men, one for women). The brand will also be opening a fifth store in London.

"Paris is one of the great fashion and consumer cities in the world, and lots of French customers are shopping in our New York stores -- it wasn't a difficult choice," explained J. Crew CEO Mickey Drexler to WWD.

The Paris women's store will open in March on Rue Malher, with 1,830 square feet (170 square meters) of shopping space and a renovated wooden storefront, with stone interior walls, and oak, marble and brass details.

The slightly smaller men's store will arrive in September next year, and will reportedly resemble the J. Crew Liquor Store in New York's TriBeCa. The fifth London store will also arrive in 2015 and will be housed in a former bank on Marylebone High Street.
This is such exciting news! I think J.Crew will fit very nicely in Paris. Yes, there is a lot of competition. However, there are also a lot of tourists who will be eager to stop and shop at J.Crew. Also, the French retail scene does not employ sales as often (I think traditionally it is twice a year), so that should delight J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler.

But the real question is: What will the French customers think of all the French-phrase clothing at J.Crew? ;)

What are your thoughts on J.Crew's latest international expansion? Are you excited to see J.Crew moving to Paris?

J.Crew's Brooklyn Debut {looks amazeballs!}

"Thanks!" to Chetna who shared the following (along with the two images above) with us:
J. Crew's Brooklyn debut is official! The doors of the 6,000 sq. ft. Williamsburg location opened to the public today at 11am, with women's, men's and kids offerings for Brooklynites at 234 Wythe Avenue.

The first-ever Brooklyn store is teeming with special features and showcases the local artists (Naomi Reis, AMMA Studios, Johannes Giradoni and more) J.Crew collaborated with to create innovative designs for the space.

To help celebrate the arrival, J.Crew will be welcoming the Williamsburg community all weekend long with food carts and special neighborhood offerings, including a limited edition Greg LaMarche for J.Crew tote bag.
The following is an article from Refinery 29 (click here to read in its entirety) about the store opening (all photos from here on come from there as well):

Get An Exclusive Sneak Peek At J.Crew's First Brooklyn Store
By Erin Cunningham
September 26, 2014

J.Crew's first Brooklyn store isn't your typical preppy paradise. No, it was designed with the Williamsburg customer in mind, which means we won't be seeing hipsters swapping their wide-rimmed glasses for crew necks. We might find, however, men and women alike incorporating more traditional pieces into their wardrobes in surprising and delightful ways, à la Jenna Lyons.

Lyons, a former Brooklyn resident, was extremely hands-on with the store's design process, putting an emphasis on collaborations with local artists like Johannes Girardoni and Naomi Reis for the post's interior. And, while some of the 'hood's residents may not be too happy with yet another retail-chain invasion, Lyons and her team attempted to deliver the store with as much mom-and-pop aesthetic as possible; the building has maintained its original façade, and the artisanal work adds a community aspect to the mass retailer.

"So much is going on there," Lyons explained in an interview earlier this month. "Every time I read about something new these days, it’s happening in Williamsburg. Half the office lives in Williamsburg, and it felt like an easy, natural place for us to be." ...
This newest store looks amazing!!! From the outside facade to the indoor decor, I could shop there all day. With 6000 square feet of just J.Crew merchandise, it does indeed sound like a preppy paradise.

I really love looking through all the photos. Not only do they showcase a lot of eye candy, I like seeing how the clothes are styled on the mannequins.

What are your thoughts on J.Crew's latest store opening? Do you think the new location is a good fit for J.Crew? Have you stopped in already? Are you planning to? If so, please share! :)

J.Crew Says "Bonjour Paris!"

"Thanks!" to WellFedFred, who let us know about the following news from Business Week. (Click here to read article in its entirety.)
J.Crew Looks to Paris After Hong Kong for Overseas Growth (2)
By Billy Chan and Stephanie Wong
May 20, 2014

J. Crew Group Inc., the retail chain that is opening its first Asian stores this week, plans to expand its international push with outlets in continental Europe and will be scouting for locations in Paris.

The company plans to open stores in mostly capital cities worldwide to boost brand awareness, said Chief Executive Officer Millard “Mickey” Drexler. He will head to the French capital in a few weeks to look at some sites, Drexler said. The company currently has no presence in continental Europe.

J.Crew, ...has been expanding overseas and the Hong Kong stores are part of its plan to open outlets abroad this year including one in London and about four in Canada after opening three in the U.K. in 2013. The store additions come amid slower pace of annual revenue growth for the retailer that draws almost all of its sales in the U.S.

“We are looking where we see the right environment, like Paris is obviously a great city to do business in,” Drexler said in an interview in Hong Kong today, ahead of tomorrow’s opening of its first two Asia locations in the Chinese city. “The ambition is to go slow and do it well with great integrity, and not do it quickly and lose the quality control that’s critically important to us.”

...J.Crew reported in March net income fell 42 percent to $5.92 million in the fourth quarter ended February as it’s working to bounce back from an industry slump that hurt holiday sales and triggered a wave of discounting among rival retailers. Revenue growth in the 12 months ended February slowed to 9 percent from 20 percent in the year earlier, according to data compiled by Bloomberg....
I can easily see J.Crew open a store along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. It is a super-busy street that attracts international shoppers. I would also be excited to see how they would design the store. Very exciting news! :)

What are your thoughts on J.Crew's international expansion? Do you think now is the time to ramp up international expansion? Do you think they are moving into the right cities?

J.Crew Pops Up in London

"Thanks!" to many of you, including GigiOfCa (in this post) who let us know that J.Crew opened a pop-up store in London.

There are a few posts about this event over at J.Crew's own 770 blog ("Hello, London: Up Early with Jenna"; "Hello, London: Our Pop-Up Has Arrived"; and "Hello, London: It’s Cocktail Hour"). All the photos in this post come from J.Crew's blog.

The following is from NY Daily News (click here to read in its entirety) about the pop-up store:
J.Crew opens flash pop-up shop in London: Temporary store open only 48 hours
For its first foray in the city J.Crew is setting up a temporary shop in the Western Transit Shed in King's Cross, London.

May 24, 2013

The preppy US retailer has opened a summer pop-up store in London and teamed up with the city's famous fashion school, Central Saint Martins, for a series of projects.

For its first foray in the city J.Crew is setting up a temporary shop in the Western Transit Shed in King's Cross, London.

Featuring the brand's famous monogramming service, as well as a selection of special Spring/Summer pieces and a preview of the Fall collection, the pop-up shop is set to live up to its name and will be open for just 48 hours, from May 24 to 25.

Longer-lived London plans include a design project and scholarship program with the city's famed Central Saint Martins fashion school, alma mater to Alexander McQueen, Zac Posen and Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci among others.

On Wednesday the brand's creative director Jenna Lyons set the school's knitwear students a cashmere challenge, with the winning design picked for production and sold in J.Crew stores around the globe.

"Knitwear knowledge isn't as prevalent in the US. Here, it's a much bigger deal" Lyons told Vogue. "You guys love a knit," added the 44-year-old designer.

J.Crew will also be awarding a scholarship (covering course fees and accomodation for a year) to one lucky applicant to the Central Saint Martins fashion MA program.

Central Saint Martins's famed fashion professor, Louise Wilson, explained the link between brands and higher education programs: "without brands' support, we would be dead in the water. We met through their fortuitous imagination. This is about live learning," she added.

J.Crew will be opening a full flagship in November on Regent Street in the famous West End of the city.

The pop-up store definitely looks intriguing! It has a more high-end feel than I was expecting it to. I am so curious what the Regent Street store will end up looking like now. (Probably like a concept store than the one in my mall.)

What are your thoughts on J.Crew's pop-up store? Do you like the layout? Are you excited about their upcoming opening in London?

J.Crew at Toronto Eaton Centre {finally open!}

J.Crew’s latest Women's store, as well as their first Men's Shop in Canada at Toronto Eaton Centre, is finally open for business.

"Thanks!" to Get Fresh Press who shared her observations of the new stores with us, which is laid out in bullet form for ease:
  • ... the layout is slightly larger with a dedicated side room for suiting and Collection type pieces (Lots of Jules paisley dresses, ...)
  • The fitting area for women is also better designed with proper doors versus the Yorkdale curtains, but the lighting is still dark and slightly greenish.
  • Less of a security guard presence at front door than when Yorkdale opened.
  • I actually liked the organization and styling in our first men's store, which is right next door but has to be entered separately, slightly more than the women's.
  • My big annoyance was the continual small disparities between the regular online Canadian pricing and the in-store merchandise - always greater.  For example, the navy field jacket, which I did purchase, is $172 online but $178 in-store
  • All of the past roll-out regular merchandise which is already discounted in US stores and online is still full price, which I guess is understandable for a new opening.
  • The if "while supplies last" if you spend $300 gift with purchase ...is apparently a "ladies" Timex watch
  • My reco to other JC fans would be to do your online shopping before you go to make sure you are getting good value.
  • And JC is also heavily promoting the opening of a third Toronto store at Fairview Mall in the North York area of the city end of this month.
"Thanks!" again to Get Fresh Press for her fantastic insights on the new stores!
Also, there is a post over at Sidewalk Hustle (click here to read in its entirety) that covers both stores, but also posts some gorgeous interior shots of the stores' merchandise (both Men and Women's). It is definitely worth checking out, especially for the eye candy! All the photos included in this post, come from Sidewalk Hustle's post too.

Have you checked out the new J.Crew store at Toronto Eaton Centre? If so, please let us know what you thought of it! :)

New Men's Store Opening

Thanks!" to JCrew Guy In Canada, who shared the following GQ article (click here to read in its entirety) with us:
Store Spotlight: J.Crew Opens Inaugural Ludlow Shop
By Matthew Sebra
March 1, 2012

J.Crew's quest to dress men everywhere, and for every occasion, continues with the opening the their new Ludlow Shop. Nestled on a catalog-shoot worthy street in Tribeca, just south of the brand's wildly successful Liquor Store location, this new outpost is dedicated to showing off their best-selling Ludlow suit in every form imaginable. Nineteen versions of the tailored two-piece are available for purchase, from the original notch lapel model to a double-breasted option and even an evening tux if your datebook calls for such sartorial goods. And while the store's name may indicate its singular focus, the stock is anything but one-dimensional. Joining the Ludlow suits is an array of complimentary gear, from J.Crew's Thomas Mason shirting and Italian cashmere to shoes from Alden and Crockett & Jones that sit alongside the brand's made-in-NYC ties, Drake's pocket squares, and Corgi socks. Sharp style extends beyond the clothes and after you've had a look at some lapels you'll find the space stocked with midcentury modern furniture and antiques, including a vintage desk covered in archival Alden shoe catalogs and ledgers (more on that later).

We spoke with the man behind the beloved suit style, J.Crew's head of menswear design Frank Muytjens, about why now is the right time for the tailoring-targeted store.

GQ Eye: Why did you want to dedicate a whole store to the Ludlow suit and why do it now in Tribeca?
Frank Muytjens: We launched the Ludlow suit when we opened the Liquor Store in 2008 and the response has been incredible! Guys come in to all of our shops and ask for it by name. And since the launch, the Ludlow has outgrown the Liquor Store so we decided to relocate that shop down the street to showcase the Ludlow in a bigger way. We are also super excited to offer monogramming, complimentary courier service, and on-site suit specialists.

GQ Eye: What type of customer do you envision shopping at the Ludlow store?
Frank Muytjens: To us it's always about being modern, but not too trendy. He's a guy who loves quality and is interested in being more understated than overstated. He invests in classic pieces he knows and will have forever and always can go back to.
So many Menswear store openings- exciting news indeed! Also, who knew that the demand for the Ludlow suit would bring on its very own dedicated store in NYC?!?

What are your thoughts on this latest store concept from J.Crew? Do you think the location is a good fit with J.Crew? Will you be stopping by?

More J.Crew Stores Coming to Canada!

"Thanks!" to so many of you, including JCrew Guy In Canada, as well as C, who shared the following news with us: J.Crew has new stores opening in Canada! There are several articles about their expansion (thanks JCAs for sharing them!), the following is from the Globe and Mail (click here to read in its entirety):
J.Crew announces Edmonton and Vancouver stores
By Maggie Wrobel
February 23, 2012

Edmonton and Vancouver will get a dose of Americana chic this spring, as iconic retailer J. Crew is set to open two new stores in the Canadian cities.

Following on the heels of the brand’s first Canadian store – which opened to much fanfare in Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall last August – a two-floor, 5,953-square-foot Vancouver outpost is planned for Robson Street, while the single-floor, 5,657-square-foot Edmonton store will be located in the West Edmonton Mall. (A second Toronto location is planned for this fall, to be housed in the Eaton Centre.)

Calling the Canadian response to J. Crew “absolutely electric,” president and creative director Jenna Lyons added that all three new stores will also offer, for the first time in Canada, the coveted men’s collection.

The brand’s arrival in Canada last year received a mixed reaction, as initial excitement turned to letdown over elevated prices, which were about 15 per cent higher in the Canadian store and on the Canadian e-commerce site compared with those at U.S. outlets. Following a consumer outcry, the company reverted to allowing Canadians to shop the U.S. site in American currency.
So many stores opening in Canada, including Menswear- exciting news indeed!

What are your thoughts on this latest locations for a store opening? Do you think the locations are a good fit with J.Crew? Will you be stopping by?
