JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. An update for those JCAs that have jumped into Stylebook lately. I used it to pack for a 5-day trip and found it real helpful. For once I wasn’t over-packed, which is a miracle for me. I love how you can see the whole packing list as separate items or as looks, it really helped me to focus on coordinating separates vs stand-alone outfits. I know this isn’t earth-shattering packing advice or anything, but sometimes it’s easier said than done, especially when you have a lot of great choices.

    1. I use the packing feature to list items or "looks" that I would like to try but just haven't gotten around to wearing. Then I can delete the item or look from the packing list. (Yes, clearly, I have too many clothes)

Kimi who blogs at cottoncashmerecathair.com had a good tip for cost per wear. Stylebook only shows the best 25 cost per wear items. Once an item dips below $1 CPW she said that she zeros out the price on Stylebook, so that it doesn't take up one of the 25 spots on CPW. (You can set whatever threshold you want, of course)

Do any JCAs have any Stylebook tips?

    2. That’s a great tip about CPW, thanks for sharing!

    3. You're welcome! I am a bit of a stats geek (when it comes to my clothes). I must admit that it gave me a little heartache to use Kimi's suggestion. I wanted to free up a spot in CPW but didn't want to lose the price entirely (although if CPW is down below $1/wear presumably the price has become irrelevant). So I went one step further and when I want to move an item out of CPW and zero out the price I add the price in the notes. That way, if I'm feeling really geeky, I can then mentally calculate the CPW.

I'd love to find a way to free up the most worn category as well. Once an item has hit 30 wears, I'd love to get it out of there to see other items, but the only ways to do that as far as I can tell is to delete the item entirely OR to manually remove from the 30 plus calendar days. Neither of which is appealing to me.

If you go to Kimi's blog and search "Stylebook" you can see various blog entries she's had that mention her use of Stylebook

    4. @Toronto Modern - "when I want to move an item out of CPW and zero out the price I add the price in the notes" << I've thought about doing that with items that are several years old and were already heavily worn when they were entered in Stylebook. It really annoys me when Stylebook calculates the price per wear with the assumption that nothing had been worn prior to entering in Stylebook, while I know that I've worn that item 100+ times.

  2. Can anyone comment on the color of the new gingham shirt that's labelled "tropical ivory?" Is it more of a blue, blue-green or turquoise? I have the turquoise color from last year, love it and would like another, but this color looks like it inclines more in the bright bluebird blue range.

  3. I am finding this recent 30% off with free shipping promotion very challenging. Nothing seems to be final sale and there were some things I wanted to try in January that I resisted because of the final sale that have been popping back: Maddie chinos, cropped stretch chinos, Lottie tartan flats.

I have not bought a heck of a lot less than in January, but I have still bought more items than I should have.

I am still shaking my head over the sequin cami H4559 that I ordered (in two colors!) because they were $24 and $29 Canadian dollars. (They haven't shipped yet)

    1. Ooops. Meant to say I have bought a heck of a lot less than in January. I hope the addition of the "not" is not an accurate prediction of the future...

    2. Use the force (of Stylebook) to resist! For any item you’re considering, go to that category on Stylebook and take an honest look at what you already have. Even if you don’t have the same colour or fabric of the item on sale, do you have enough similar items?

    3. @shopgrrrl - That's a very good point. Stylebook has been a huge help for me as well as a somewhat unwanted wakeup regarding my wardrobe and shopping habits. I don't know about the rest of you, but for me, it's mathematically impossible to wear all of my clothes on a regular basis. Maybe I don't already have a sky blue wool cable tunic sweater or a neon pink flowered silk shirt with ruffles down the front, but I do have many, many other beautiful tops that I love but rarely wear.

    4. @Jeanne +1 even with only a fraction of my wardrobe in Stylebook I realize my numbers are ridiculous. Granted, I live in Canada and have to dress for everything from extreme heat to extreme cold, but still. I filled a small box with donations today and listed a few other items. It’s not much, but a step in the right direction for me.
