JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. TO would love some help with necklaces. I want to buy a few new ones but never seem to wear them once I get them. I am super jealous of Rynetta's pics and how she can rock the statement necklaces...I wish! I seem to have better luck with the factory versions because they are usually on a smaller scale. Any ideas on small to medium sized necklaces that can be worn fairly regularly? I seem to stick to smaller...more dainty non jcrew pieces more French than not and rarely wear the pieces I have. I wear a lot of vintage cotton vnecks with blazers, liberty button downs, silk tees, gingham styles and long sleeved cashmere tees in pretty much every color you can think of...except yellows which aren't good on me. Also keep in mind I have a 15 month old that loves shiny things and is still learning what gentle means!! Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

    2. I was jealous that you had more French than not jewelry! :)

    3. I have been layering the necklaces lately. I find a couple that look good together and pile them on. You could use a couple of your smaller ones together to help ease you into a "bigger statement look" I get tons of compliments when I do this because honestly it looks great. I typically will use just a small all clear crystal necklace and then put something with color with it. Or I have even layered with just all clear crystal, goes with everything. Just experiment, there are no rules. :)

    4. Hi reaganflowers - It may be better for you to stick to the less-expensive Factory pieces in order to accommodate the curiously strong and sticky fingers that will inevitably wrap themselves around them! I always take off necklaces (and dangling earrings!) when interacting with the really little ones in my family. That said, my recommendations for smaller pieces that pack a punch and can be worn for multiple seasons are: 1) Brass Leaves Necklace and Bracelet, 2) Faceted Cone Necklace and Bracelet (multiple colors), 3) Pyramid-Studded Crystal Necklace and Bracelet, 4) Crystal Venus Flytrap Necklace and Earrings, and 5) Swarovski Crystal Dot Necklaces, Bracelets, and Earrings (multiple colors). I've used the official names from the website. These are all currently available, although not necessarily on sale. I've also picked up several smaller, in-store only necklaces that tend to be $50.00 or less. I don't often layer necklaces, mostly because I don't like my jewelry to compete with each other and my clothes, but also because too many necklaces and bracelets gets heavy! But I've seen lots of cool examples from the Style Guide and SAs which look great. Have fun with them!

    5. Fellow petite here -- I second the suggestion of layering daintier necklaces to create the same impact without the overwhelming scale of true statement necklaces. Works for pearls, too -- I have three single-strands in different shades (white, blush, and grey), and I opt for one, two, or all three depending on the colors I'm wearing.

My local TJ Maxx sometimes carries smaller statement necklaces, Maybe worth a shot if you've one nearby?

    6. I am also petite and am not sure if i can pull of the statement neclaces.
Like suggested above the crystal flytrap necklace i wear all the time.It has just the right amount of sparkle and the size is perfect.
I have the older version,i have heard the newer version is much blingier and more gold that the old one. Maybe you can find it on the JCA forum like i did.
You can see it on me on my instagram inawonderland5

    7. I agree with the statement necklaces being too much at 5'1". Couple of ones that I like and seem to work for me, is the Petite Pear necklace and more current Faceted Dots Necklace (a5882) in Crystal. I purchased in store and it was called Pointed Facets. I returned the crystal flytrap necklace. Just as Ina said, I preferred the older version, the newer one seemed too cheap looking.

    8. reaganflowers: OMG, you're super sweet, what a compliment. Thank you!!!! I should tell you that my first J. Crew jewelry purchase was the Pearl Twisted Hammock necklace. Have you tried it? I think that it's super versatile, and it would work well with your frame. I love all of the aforementioned suggestions as well! And, layering out of case jewelry pieces might be an option too. HTH! Thanks again!!!!!

    9. I second everyone saying the factory (or retail) Venus flytrap necklaces. Also, if you are looking for something unique and sturdy, I highly recommend the staggered scrollwork necklace as I think it looks great alone or layered with other pieces. I personally am a big factory jewelry fan as well and have only recently started branching out to the retail pieces, so I think that you can do a lot with combinations of the factory pieces as well.

    10. I don't feel quite at home in the recent J. Crew necklaces. I miss when they did more pendants (this one was nice, I have it in blue: Bright Droplet Necklace #01165) and less bling. I like the big bling-y jewelry when I see it on others, but on me it usually doesn't feel right. Give Factory a try, they have some cute necklaces that you wouldn't have to layer. I like the Factory Blooming Petal necklace (#a6671), the Factory Fringed Fan necklace (#a1643), Factory Fan Fringe necklace (#a6088) (those are two difference necklaces with almost the same name!). To layer, I like the Factory Gold Plated Chain-Link necklace (#01897), maybe the Factory Thorn and Crystal necklace (#a1058), and the Venus Fly-trap necklace.

    11. Thanks everyone...I have a couple of the necklaces mentioned already and may try layering them. I've been eyeing the fan necklaces and also a few of the navy and turquoise ones currently at factory. Thanks again...glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue!

  2. Totally off-topic, but Drew Barrymore wore the Merino Silk Panel Sweater in Antique Floral (Item #a1921) last night on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. See photo here http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20791583,00.html

    2. I was clicking through the channels and caught a glimpse of a JC sweater and the Brompton mini hobo in last night's Modern Family.

    3. Yes! "Claire" often carries the Brompton mini hobo in henna. I think she also carries another J Crew purse from a few years ago.

  3. A bit off topic but does anybody know if they are still doing 25% off outerwear in stores? Are they stacking with 20% off card member promo? TIA!

  4. OT, but has anybody seen any Metallic Blush Gold Martinas in stores and can confirm how much they are? I keep wanting them to get another cut online, but no dice!

    1. I did see them in store a few weeks back, and recall that they were WAY cheaper than online. I think either 69.99 or 89.99 (before the % off sales items). I had just recently purchased them online at the 189 plus some % off promo with a rewards card but still remember feeling irked about the price difference.

  5. How would you style the Pleated Chiffon Blouse in Gingham? I have it in the Pinot Noir color (kind of a berry/burgundy). The neckline is that deep slit with a button to close it. I can't figure out how to deal with the neckline, jewelry, or what to wear over it or on the bottom. I really like it and it looks kind of fun with denim, but every time I try to wear it, there is something going on that I don't like. Any suggestions? Thank you!
