J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Hi JCAs!
Has anyone received their Wool Cafe Capri in Baked Citron? I'm interested in your thoughts on this color, whether the lighter color shows all the areas we don't want highlighted and any pics would be much appreciated.

My sizes are all sold out and I'm tempted to buy a larger size and either wear it fairly loose or have it altered. But then again, if I'm going to pay $$$ would ideally not have to do that.....so, looking for anyone's review :)

  2. Garden lace pencil skirt styled here.

  3. I tried the Ruthie Shirtdress in store last week. It runs small, and is very fitted, especially across the bust. The fabric has a bit of wool woven in which didn't agree with me. I also tried the No. 2 pencil skirt in gilded tweed, which also runs smaller than my other pencils. Does the new #2 run smaller overall? I did try the new Garden Lace (not online yet-navy blue with black a grosgrain ribbon waist band) and the fit was perfect in my usual size. Also loved the Classic flare jean in jezebel wash. A great looking dressy, uniform dark wash. The waist was a tiny bit snug, but the SA promised stretch. Hope this helps.

  4. I also tried on the garden lace skirt in Boston last weekend and loved it so much I bought it (wasn't sure this was an item that would actually make it online and didn't want to lose out, as it was sooo hard to get the double serge pencil skirt in bright dahlia this summer...)

I also tried on the featherknit shirred henley tshirt in the navy and dahlia which were both very nice and well fitting tshirts and which could easily be dressed up or down.

I was looking for cashmere sweaters, but the particular store (in Cambridge) doesn't carry cashmere, so will have to rely on the catalogue picture and make my decision about the indigo colour!

I also ordered the bi-stretch wool suit in the warm grey with my 20% off discount and am anxious to see the colour. Now have my basics, though I think I will be ordering the weatherbie boots, which I will surely be able to put to good use in September and October around here!

  5. Fisherman's henley sweater (48783) - Vintage champagne is a little more tan than I expected from the online picture. TTS, maybe a little "shrunken" in length. The knit could've been a little tighter - there were noticeable gaps near the cables right out of the bag, and the purl stitch on the henley placket was rather loose, leading me to believe it would likely stretch out over time. Disappointing overall, but I think the buttons were the worst - the "enamel" crest buttons felt like Old Navy cheapies or something. Leather buttons would've been much better (and more appropriate on a $150 sweater). Perhaps the navy color wouldn't show as much of the knit, but those buttons would always be a deal breaker IMO. Definitely a return, not repurchase for me.

  6. Has anyone seen the cashmere this year, besides the cable knit one, that can review the quality and compare it to past years?

  7. I'm looking for reviews / info on any of the LemLem pieces, esp. the tops / dresses. Especially wondering how sizing runs and how folks are styling them. I can't recall anyone here really having said much about them....hoping to maybe pick up a piece or two during the next % off sale. Anyone?

Rose, I just love that skirt! LOVE IT!

  8. Julie,

Thanks for that i am dying to read a review of the Ruthie shirt dress although I think my size has gone now, mind you, UK e store at the end of the month - hopefully they will stock that to the gills.

You will all have to watch me, I might lose it a bit at first having J Crew as a real option now - feel free to intervene if i start overbuying!

  9. Can anyone comment on the quoddy ring boots? I ordered them with the card holder promo but wanted some other opinions on them.

  10. I tried on the Ruthie shirtdress last week. It fits very very snugly across the chest. I would def. have to size up at least one size, and possible two. We just had a 2 at the store, so I couldn't even give a 4 or 6 a try. I wonder if the dress would hang everywhere else, in order to get an appropriate fit at the bust?

yikes! loved the dress, but can't be bustin' out!

  11. I couldn't resist the Timex Andros watch and I am happy to say that in IRL it does not disappoint (unlike the Fishermen's Henley sweater - thank you silver_lining for your review). Wore it all weekend stacked with thin silver bracelets to girl-it-up and received loads of compliments. The deep navy blue color gives it a fun little twist. I, like many of you, long for the J Crew of yore with their clean lines, high quality materials and construction, and gorgeous colors. The Timex watches with interchangeable straps have gone a long way in satisfying my inner Prepster while I wait for JC to recalibrate.
I also ordered the cashmere poncho (shawl collar with cap sleeves) to figure out sizing for when and if it makes it to sale (the dark gray was sold out in S last time I checked). The fit is boxy and oversized. I normally wear a M in their cashmere and took a S in this particular cut. The style is adorable but I could see this pilling up quickly as it is thin. IMO I don't see much of an improvement in cashmere quality despite the higher $.

  12. Good morning, all! I posted this last week but really need an opion..the knit weekend pants with zip ankles and drawstring waist...am I hallucinating that it runs at least 2 sizes sm? USPS back and forth (100+ miles from B&M) so I don't know whether to continue this cycle! Happy shopping!

  13. Elaine,

Yes, I wondered about the full length LemLem dress that was featured on the front of one of the catalogs this spring/summer and went way down in price. I know Fabulous Florida Mommy and several others posted that they ordered it but I never heard how it fit, quality, etc. Would like to hear any reviews about that line as well.

  14. I ordered the Hacking jacket in midnight ocean and it arrived yesterday. I don't have any blazers of yore to compare it to, but I love it. Such a beautiful shade and it fits well.

    See review here.

  16. I'm wondering if anyone has tried the Face Stockholm nail polishes and what do you think? TIA!

  17. Hi all -

Has anyone tried the Bonnie (jacquard) dress? It looks beautiful. I was prepared to pay FP this morning but I bailed out as it wouldn't be shipped until late September.

I tried on the navy lace pencil skirt and it was enormous. If I buy it (only with a big % off) I'll go 2 sizes down from usual.

  18. cortneyjoy, I am a FACE Stockholm fan from way back ... I bought the Hot Pepper polish in my B&M last week and it's lovely. I've only had it on for 2 days, so I can't comment on how it wears yet. I was really mad to receive the Bright Dahlia polish (listed under Girls' stuff) in the mail last week and there was polish run all down the front of the bottle! I was / am so mad. At first I thought it leaked in transit but thank goodness it didn't. I love the super-saturated color, once I exchange it for an unused one (grr) I can't wait to try it out.

  19. a little off topic: but when you pre-order something, are you supposed to get an order number or anything? i did it through a personal shopper and will be away on vacation during the time i'm told it will be delivered, so i wanted to be able to track it while i'm gone.

    ReplyDelete
  20. WMM - Did you take your usual size in the Featherknit Shirred Henley?

I've needed to size down lately in knits when xxs is an option. So, I'm wondering if I need to with this top.
    Thanks.

  21. The Chic Chauffeur is right - the Ruthie dress is very tight across the chest! I had button gap. However, I found it to be very loose in the bottom (and I am an hourglass type - not a skinny minnie). IMO the bottom almost looked like a bell skirt. So I think if I size up, the bottom will be huge. Also not sure if I loved the fabric - it had sort of a rumpled look, like when you pull something out of the dryer but don't iron it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Maryeb,

I am always an XS in Tshirts/knits and a small (or size 6) in perfects shirts and sweaters as I like them a little looser.

The henley still has room (I am a DD in the bust) so I would suggest you may be looking at an XXS on this one!

  23. Hello JCA's! This is very OT, but I will be making a trip to SC tomorrow, and I'm not sure whether I should visit the Clearance Center in Lynchburg or Arden. Any feed back is greatly appreciated, thanks!!

  24. I finally received my parcels from the LOVEIT promo last week. Very happy with everything I got, and only one item was cancelled (the Medina mid-heel sandals, but on retrospect, not a big loss). Here's some of the things I ordered:

    - the shortcut sweater (in black and muslin; item 41319) in my usual size Small. Fits TTS, pretty skinny in the arms, but looser through the body. The knit is really substantial with a nice drape due to the silk content, and an amazing deal. Definitely looking forward to wearing this in late summer/early fall

    - Heather lace shell (item 44115) in grey; ordered usual size 6. Also fits TTS. This is a gorgeous top, the nicest dressy top I have gotten from J. Crew in a while. For some reason, the heather grey weave gives the illusion of a silver metallic.

    - Lilibeth sandals (item 44626) in barely peach. I could barely believe my eyes when I spotted these marked down to $27 and then an additional 40% off that. The colour in real life is a pale tan. The leather straps are a little scratchy on the inside and it does run a little narrow across the top but otherwise, it's fine.

    - men's lightweight utility shirt (item 25271). The cotton is a bit sheer but the chest pockets provide opacity where it counts ;-) . The crisp cotton poplin is really nice and perfect for a hot summer day. Some people might not like the buttons, which are a little larger than usual and are cream coloured against the pure white background. In any event, it was a great purchase - my husband looks really good in it. I am going to post an IRL pic later this week!

In other news....the Toronto J. Crew store is set to open August 18!! I am counting the days!!!

  25. I posted these in the Seek & Find post this weekend, but thought I would post them again here.

I noticed a lot of inconsistent sizing on the same item - for example, the Tippi Sweater in Vibrant Flame was perfect in XS (my usual size), but the XS was HUGE in both Black and Grape (love the sweater, though). Similarly, the Wool Cafe Capris were big in 00 in black but I could barely do up the 00 in the camel colour. Very odd. I didn't love the texture of these and found them quite unflattering on me from behind, but I didn't find them itchy and I am very sensitive to wool.

They had the Maisie Dress in Abstract Floral, which I liked and found TTS, but I prefer it in the solid colours.

Tried the Puff Sleeve Popover in end-on-end as well. I love a subtle puff sleeve but this was over the top and made my top half look like a big triangle. I would size up on this one as well, since the buttons gapped a bit in my usual size 0.

Ruthie Shirtdress: I went up one size in this to a 2 since the buttons are placed very far apart which make it prone to gapping. It was okay and would probably be nice when styled properly, but was a bit blah on me. I also found that the bottom hem looked a bit unfinished.

Silk Blythe Blouse: Love this. Fit TTS in my usual 0 with no button gapping. It is a bit short but will look fantastic tucked into skirts or mid- to high-rise trousers. Sheer in the white but fine in the other colours.

Jardin Skirt: Had never even given this a second look online but loved it in person. Found it TTS in my usual 00 for skirts - sits nice and high on the waist and makes my waist look tiny. Hits just at the middle of my kneecaps, but I am 5'9 so would likely be below the knee on someone shorter.

Schoolboy Blazer: Fit TTS in my usual 2 for blazers. Didn't like it in the grey and found that it wrinkled, bunched and pulled awkwardly but for some reason the caramel was much better and smoother and I really liked it. Go figure.

Like Louise, I am counting down the days until the Toronto store opens!

  26. Received the Schoolboy blazer in Houndstooth. It was meh. The color was more a dull blue than grey. The fit was good, but the color was unimpressive, so I returned it.

  27. Has anyone tried the Paradisa dress? Would love a review if so!

  28. I reviewed the school boy blazer in summer stipe on my blog megancrewreviews.blogspot.com

It's a nice summer blazer overall.

  29. Has anyone tried the Paley wool pants? Just noticed they're on sale. Would love to hear a review!

  30. I just received the Ruthie dress and the Breezeway dress. I agree with others that the Ruthie is snug across the bust, but it fits me fine with no gaping. I am actually very happy with its fit (and I am a 34D). The fabric is weird, I am not sure on the 90%cotton, 10% wool content. I am keeping it because it is the perfect fall work dress and will post after I wear it the first time if it is unbearably itchy. The Breezeway dress is cute, but runs big. I ordered a small, and I am a 6 usually and it is too big and shapeless. Very cute potential though, ordering an XS now.

  31. I reviewed the Town Hall dress in the peacock feather today at my blog. I love it, and think the color, versatility, and fairly conservative cut make this one more than worth the sale price.

    http://mysuperfluities.blogspot.com/2011/08/j-crew-review-town-hall-dress-in.html

Momoberry: Definitely visit the one that is in L'burg, not the Millrace, but the Wyndhurst one. It is set up like a regular store, with tons of shoes and even has a small selection of crewcuts! So jealous, you will have a great time!

  33. Hi! Posted this yesterday in a different listing.

-Encore trench: The tulle was scratchier than I expected. But I guess to get the proper volume, they needed a very thick tulle. It should be ok with pants or tights, but if you go bare legs with a short dress/skirt, I'm not sure how comfy it would be. They didn't have my size, so no comment on fit.

-Poppy King lipstick: A bit of a mystery. It showed up more red on me, when I was expecting more of a coral/orange tone. However, previous reviews say it's more orange than red. Go figure! If you look at the Jcrew 770 blog photo, it looks a bit different on each person. I assumed it was the lighting, but maybe your skin tone makes a difference? At any rate, it reminds me of the Nars Exhibit A blush color. It's also weighted, so it doesn't feel cheap in your hand.

  34. I received the Double cloth Metro coat today in hthr majestic purple. It's a gorgeous coat, really well-made with red contrast piping in the front lining and a chain sewn in at the back of the neck. Every detail is just impeccable. I normally take a size 10 in jcrew tops but I ordered a 12 in the coat, knowing that the coats sometimes run small. The 12 is a little big... hard to tell without full winter clothes on, but I think I may reorder a 10 and see how that fits. I'm 5'7" and it falls to the middle of the knee.
The color is dark royal blue, (no trace of purple to me) darker blue than what my monitor shows. I wish it was a brighter blue. Not sure if I'll keep the color. I'd like to try the Vibrant Flame but wonder if it's more orange or more red. Does anyone know?

  35. Has anyone seen the Rigby Hobo in person? I need a large bag and this looks like a nice hybrid between and tote and handbag and I like the shoulder strap... but am wondering about a couple of things...
a - if the handle has enough drop to fit over the arm or if it must be carried only in the hand and
b - if i should wait for a % off promo or just bite the bullet and get it now with the free shipping

I've never had a J Crew bag before so would love any comments!!

  36. I received the leopart Tippi sweater. Even though its over 100 degrees and humid here, I was brave and tried it on :) I would normally get a small. Based on reviews I got an XS and I'm very happy with it. The fit is perfect. If I ever find a camel pencil skirt, it will look marvelous paired with leopard Tippi.

I declined to order the wool cafe capri in yacht blue based on numerous reviews that they were itchy. I found a similar blue pair without wool on ASOS and have high hopes for those.

  37. HI dinagideon,
Thanks for your review of the Town Hall Dress in Peacock Feather. Yours is the same color blue as online. The one I was sent is green, and not even close to being blue. Now that I have seen yours I am going to try to take mine back eventhough it was Final Sale. That is very odd indeed!

    ReplyDelete
  38. The silk leopard scarf is a winner. It's a silk chiffon, so very light weight and comfortable around the neck, the 44" x 80" size puffs up and looks very glamorous (IMHO) when doubled and pulled through, which is how I plan to wear it. The print is more subdued than many of the other wild beastie things around this season, and I think this is a plus. (happy dance)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Clipper Cardigan ran one size large for me. I'm usually an XS, but it was too large. I loved the sweater in Gatsby Green, but the knit near one of the shoulder hems was pulled and very loose. Will reorder, this time XXS and hope for no defects.

OT: I will be in Maryland, near Annapolis, soon and wondered which stores in the area have the best selection. I wouldn't mind traveling out of state (up to 2 hours) for a good experience! Thanks in advance.

  40. Shekster, I would call and order it from a personal shopper, and specifically ask for the final sale town hall be returnable, just in case the one you receive its too green a second time. I found mine to nearly match my eyes, which are a lighter teal shade than the dress, but I definitely think it reads more blue than green in real life. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Okay smart phone makes me stupid...lol. :)

Shekster definitely return and show them my blog as proof!

  42. Thanks Elaine, those are the colors I was most interested in too! I went out and bought Hot Pepper today, we'll see how it goes....

    ReplyDelete
  43. I just recieved the cavalry skirt and puff-sleeve popover. I think the skirt may be a little small - it *just* fits and sits higher than I'm used to. It is very flattering though! I need to try a 4 to verify that a 2 isn't too small. The popover is great. Very slimming and fits TTS. The fabric is a bit on the thin side but it didn't feel cheap. I don't care for the colour though, it is too vibrant orange for me. I wish it was offered in more colours!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks, Dina! I'm going to try to visit both locations :)

  45. If anyone was interested the Beachwood, OH store had one pair of New café capris in Bright Dahlia, size 2. I know they're hard to find so I thought I'd post.

  46. I got my wool hacking jacket today and hated it. The wool was so rough and scratchy, it itched even through the lining. I never had the wool bellas or lexingtons so can't compare it to that, but i did compare it to this season's double serge wool pencil skirts and the wool on the skirts is very soft and felt-like, whereas the wool on the jacket is super scratchy. I know they are technically different fabrics, but i wish they would have used a softer wool variety for the jacket. it got returned right away.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thanks Dinagideon! I appreciate your advice!

  48. I ordered the Forever cardigan in cotton, dark seaweed color, as my first-ever final sale item. Wavered a lot between the XS and the XXS, because I wear my cardigans both open and buttoned. I finally picked the XXS, and it was very fitted when it first arrived, but has since stretched out (with good fabric recovery). I am probably between sizes for cardigans, and I think the XS would have worked as well. FYI, the color is more straight, muted forest green IRL, whereas the online picture has some blue to it.

  49. I reviewed the RIgby Hobo on my blog today.
    I love it!

  50. With the 20% off cardholder discount and the fall reward card, I ordered a bunch of new fall items, most of them are on backorders but I did get 3 blazers delivered this week:

    Schoolboy Blazer in Decadent Red

Wool Hacking Jacket in Midnight Ocean and Vibrant Flame

In terms of color, the decadent red is a gorgeous color, compare to the vibrant flame, I would say the decadent red is more red, and vibrant flame is more orange in real life. The midnight ocean color is a few shades lighter in real life then the online pics.

In terms of quality and fit, I absolutely hated the schoolboy blazer, it is boxy and like some of you mentioned, the quality feels so cheap, its definately not worth the price tag even with the 20% discount.

I end of keeping the wool hacking jackets in both colors, it is a more substantial jacket and the fit is much more taylored and flattering then the schoolboy blazer, however, since I also own the past season lexington blazer, the hacking jacket is still no where in comparison with the lexington.

    the quality is still

  51. My swimsuit order just arrived and I can do a quick review if you want to take advantage of the 30% off tonight-

My measurements are 34a-27-36/size 0 pants and small sweaters.

Tulle bandeau top/retro higpsters--these are final sale, and I LOVE it; a very elegant suit and I recommend on that alone. Ordered XS in both and they fit well to slightly large, but not enough to size down (oddly it's the leg openings that seem loose.) Bought in black, totally opaque, lined, etc. LOVE.

Beach plum floral bikini/ twist bandeau top--LOVE this print. I thought it would be drab but the colors pop, gorgeous. The twist top has a brilliant cup, totally flattering. Ordered XS top and bottom-top is perfect!!, bottoms fit a little snug (and low)so I might try a Small in store this weekend.

Islet paisley draped hipsters/underwired ruched top-this print is super gorgeous also, made me look elegant. I liked these bottoms better than the above bikini bottoms and the "draping" which is a slight gathering only in the front, make the bottoms seem more dressy, if that makes sense. The top I sized down from my bra size one size (IE got a 32B) and it still seemed like it could be tighter. The top is wide (height wise)is very comfortable, esp. if you are full chested which I am not, but it gives good coverage, and on the sides too.

Confetti necklace-I like this also; it's heavier weight, and is matte not shiny. Hangs straight down as the pendants are heavy brass.

    That's all. !!

  52. A bit late for this post, but I received my cardholder promo order and will be posting some reviews on my blog over the next day or so. I started with the Vibrant Flame Hacking Jacket, which you can see here:

    http://whitedressesbluesashes.blogspot.com/2011/08/new-jcrew-hacking-jacket.html

Please forgive my iphone pics, as the color looks CRAZY bright in the photos but is instead just a very bright pinky corally orange. Pros: Tailoring, long length, vibrant color. Cons: Price, slight scratchiness, stiffness. Definitely thinking about it. More to come!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Got my 20% cardholder packages today, so here are some reviews. (As you will be able to tell from my comments, I'm fussy about color and my pet peeve is when the photo doesn't match the item.)

Hacking jacket in grape: This is a nice deep purple and is slightly eggplant rather than the "majestic purple"/navy blue I was worried about. The fit is TTS to slightly small. At 5'4.5" I am a 2R or 4P, depending, and the 2R was an almost perfect lean fit. I'm an hourglass with muscular shoulders but thin torso and arms, so fit is often a challenge, but the nipped waist worked well for me. This jacket is narrow enough through the waist and tummy that apple or ruler shapes may need to SU. I need to try it with some other items to make sure there is enough room to layer. The sleeves were NOT too long, so to me this means that the taller JCAs will likely need to order the T. The only problem is that the back vent does not hang properly. Even though the jacket fits everywhere else the vent gaps and appears to be a little off-center. I have a flat booty so I know it's not my butt making it stick out. I have a 4P coming to compare fit, so I can determine whether it's a defect or just my figure.

Jazzy purple wool pencil: the color is slightly darker and duller than it appears on line, but I am still happy with it. This might run a smidge smaller in the hips than last year's version.

Tippi sweater: I heard various things about sizing and ordered my regular XS. It was just the tiniest bit small in the hips but I would not want to size up. Neckline seems to ride up in back; I hope this will go away when it is worn. Grape is a true purple as depicted in the photo on the model, not violet as appears in the photo of the sweater along.

Cashmere tee: I ordered this notwithstanding my disgust with the price hike. The plum orchard is a magenta-ish plum as depicted on the website, not the more boysenberry color that it appears to be in the print catalog. It is exactly the same color as the jazzy purple skirt.

    HTH!

  55. Oh, a couple of additional points, for you texture types:

I compared the herringbone of the hacking jacket to my 2007 Bella, and they were very similar. The Bella has more tonal variation in the fabric; the Hacking jacket is "flatter" with less variation. The fabric is a little scratchy--about the same scratchiness as the Bella.

My 2005-07 JC cashmere purchases were so horrible that I haven't purchased any since then. Compared to my 2007 sweaters, this year's cashmere is heavier, tighter, less soft, and less fuzzy--almost a "felted" feeling. I hope that is a good sign.

  56. Technicolor tweed jacket (sz0): love. The cut is essentially the same as the boucle astrid from 2008, awesome silk lining and lime green sleeve lining which goes really well with the avocado/purple/pink/grey tweed. I normally am not a pink/purple person but somehow this works- the tweed is super luxe with a lot of depth (though it has a lovely variation of some tight loops and looser ones that miiiight be prone to snagging if you aren't careful). The snap closures are covered with a dark grey and the raw edged sleeves make it less stuffy. The collar and other seams are fully closed/not raw. Comparing to the astrid the technicolor is definitely better made. Not sure it's worth full price but it is lovely, unique, and slightly Chanel-esque. I'm keeping it because I love the quirky color combo with the classic cut, the 20% helps and my size is now soldout and who knows with the quality going downhill when they'll make another fab item like it :)p. It does have shoulder pads but I'm hoping it'll slim down with wear. Overall I'm surprised it worked for me, it was kind of a long shot. I'm looking forward to wearing it!

Academy stripe schoolboy (sz00)- the fit is perfect. Sleeves are long like I like, buttons are cute, trim is cute, wool is smooth. I knew it would be on the thin side but like it that way so it can get more wear over here in California. Very classic prep.

Overall really pleased, much better than what I saw in stores so far.

  57. Elaine and (original) Genny: I did get the Lemlem® Lucy patio dress" last year when it went on sale in a size Small (since the XSmall hadn't been available since it first debuted on the website). It does run large, but I had it taken in and have worn it several times this summer when we have stayed on the Gulf coast. The quality of the fabric is very nice, the dress is well-made and comfortable, too. I loved it from the moment I saw it on the cover of the June 2010 catalog and still love it. I am extremely happy I was able to finally add it to my summer wardrobe. :)
