"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I know that others have posted about receiving smelly clothes. It happened to me yesterday with the indigo cotton shirt with dog embroidery. It's final sale and fits perfectly but when I took it out of the bag, it smelled like it had been riding in a car with a smoker for a few days. But it wasn't exactly cigarette smoke either. It had a bit of a chemical undertone to it. It doesn't appear to have been worn. I left it out to air overnight and the smell is now more of a vague chemical/plastic smell. Did anyone ever figure out what causes this? I'll certainly wash before wearing and hopefully that will take care of the rest of it.

    1. Indigo actually is a bit smelly, I think this may be the dye. You might try washing with vinegar.

    2. Last year I bought the white denim shift dress and even though it's made of cotton, it stank of cheap synthetic hydrocarbons. The sort of smell that permeates Old Navy or a Modell's warehouse sale. But 10x worse.

      Fortunately the smell washed off.

  2. If the smell is similar to others and all the smelly clothes shipped from the warehouse instead of a store, it might be something they use to fumigate or disinfect the warehouse?

  3. I found some jcrew clothes of past seasons have a smell similar to the smell of clothes from thrift stores. I guess that is a smell of some chemical pesticide.

    1. They are treated with Formaldehyde, and other chemicals to preserve colors, make them more vibrant, wrinkle less, etc. There are even known metals in many of these clothes coming out of China. If the items having been wrapped and shipped in plastic chemical molecules are released. What they do in warehouses here, I have no idea. Washing clothes may or may not remove all chemicals.

    2. Well, none of this is very comforting, is it? I remember there was a House episode where a teenager almost died from chemicals that his jeans had been treated with. Thanks, everyone.

    3. I remember that House episode! I haven't received any smelly clothes (yet), but some of the shoes are ghastly. I think that it's the synthetic soles and glue that they use. It's revolting, and that's it for me. I don't want them.

I remember that around ten years ago, there was pet food that came from China that was killing the poor critters. It contained melamine. It makes me very unhappy that most pharmaceuticals and their ingredients are coming from China.

I'm not much for sneakers, but I recently ordered a pair from Koio that are made in Italy. They are turquoise suede and look more attractive than most. I'm not sure how they will fit, but I am really fed up with so much cheap junk.

I know that I need to buy less but better.

    4. This is why my aunt, who managed a clothing factory in Hong Kong for decades before basically all manufacturing moved to mainland China, told me that I must wash all clothing purchased from stores before wearing. No exceptions.

    5. @MmeJacqueline, Have a few friends in Italy that have purchased them & like them. They have a good insert that can be removed which good. I personally wear Golden Goose because friends own the factory. They are very well made and have a great insert. I personally like the distressed look. I’ve also been a Superga wearer since I was a kid and I like their colors. I have paired quite a few with Jcrew outfits. People always compliment the bright colors and coordinated attire. Hope the sneakers work out for you.

    6. @Lynn: I'll check out Golden Goose. Thanks for that tip. The first pair of Supergas I bought were made in Italy. I guess that was a long time ago.

  4. I wonder why an item would go from being "Not Eligible for Promo" to being reduced and final sale. I have been considering trying the Long Parke Blazer in Italian stretch wool in Navy (AJ897), and I was waiting for a promo. Sizes and quality are so iffy that I would never take a chance on FS.

This pricing strategy just baffles me, especially since that blazer is now at 30% off the reduced price of $209 (originally $298) rather than 50-60% off.

There was a time when I would have paid $298 and thought it was worth it.

  5. It’s the chemicals the manufacturing facility has in the commercial iron/steamer they use before they package the item to send to jcrew. It stays sealed and if completely airtight some of the gases from this interact with the plastic bag.

  6. The mystery delivery notification arrived again. Left at mailbox at 4:53pm. Nope. No delivery on our Ring, no package. I guess I’ll give this one another few days before contacting CS again.
Of course it’s something I purchased using rewards too, which further complicates matters.

    1. Frustrating. This happened to me once, the package actually showed up a week later all scraped and torn. I guess the delivery person scanned it, and then dropped it somplace in the truck and found it a week later. Fortunately the contents were fine. That's why I usually wait a full week after missing a delivery date.

    2. BTW, I received a JCrew package that was supposed to be delivered by May 8th. It went through the Post Office in Kearny, which is like a black hole. From Kearny NJ it went to Denver CO then back to Secaucus NJ and finally made it here. Not the first package that went to Kearny then vanished for a long time before resurfacing.

    3. That’s crazy. Package showed up today. I almost wish it didn’t. I got the pleated crepe shorts (looks like a skort). Meh. The pleats flare out. I’ll try to steam but they’re not great on me.

    4. Not like bloomers, not that short. Just the shape isn’t as structured as I expected. The pleats should lie flat to make an A line shape but they flare out (imagine curtains being tied back), maybe steaming them flat will help them look the way they do online.

    5. Steaming doesn’t work so they are allowing me to return them as defective. Customer service has been wonderful.

  7. OT, Stubbs & Wootton have a 50% off sale.

  8. Just received the Collection Sleeping Lion Print blouse and pants. I noticed the blouse is a much lighter weight in the blouse from recent prints. The pants are light weight and fit me tts. The Parrot earrings on Factory side are cute but arrived defective. Beads were missing on the top of the parrots head:) Sending me another pair. Good size, nice colors, and light weight. Fun item. They’re showing sold out but if interested call CS they have thousands.

I picked up the JCxBarbour quilted jacket for men in a size S during the big sale last week, and even though it is about 2 sizes too big for me, it actually has a fitted shape to it, unlike JC's barn jacket for women. I had previously ordered (and since returned) the women's barn jacket in my regular size, and the shape was terrible even with the buttons in the back, which did nothing. The Barbour men's jacket, despite being large in the shoulders and long in the arms, has a longer, lean shape. I received it today and the moment I tried it on, I had that ah-ha moment that I didn't have with the women's barn jacket. I don't understand who's designing the fit of JC's womenswear.

    2. I was packing my barn jackets up last night to return and tried on again after I read this post. I also tried on the uncoated field jacket from a few seasons ago. Same size but the fit is so much better. (Too bad I’m less enthused about the color.) Subtle fit details make such a big difference.

    3. Yes! The old field jackets definitely fit better than the current barn jacket!
