Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Any insight into Garnet Hill? Their summer sale is on now, and I'm eying a pair of Belle signature ballet flats. Made in Italy of Italian leather! But I'm wary of spending $17 on round-trip shipping for a product I may not love (and could find comparable examples of elsewhere). Advice (and/or free shipping codes) welcome.

(At least I have managed to talk myself out of the cashmere shirttail sweater. It looks adorable, especially in the lake mist colorway--but my hips are my widest part, and I am forever ordering things with peplums or ruffled bottoms and kicking myself when I actually try them on...)

  2. Received the Talbots order I placed on July 4th and pleasantly surprised. Ordered ten items and 5 are keepers. Wearing the navy pleat sleeve tee with tic rac trim and white jeans today. Great quality and cute details. Also keeping printed fan tunic, lace sleeve striped popover, embroidered neckline striped shift dress and a pair of flowered driving mocs. Actually placed another order since I found some things to love and am now more familiar with the sizing. Happy to have found an additional place to shop.

    1. How did you find the sizing? I've ordered shoes from them within the last year and love them, but I've been wary about clothes sizing/fit. I'm usually a 0-00, XXS/XS at J.Crew, barely 5'4" but petites rarely work for me because I have a long torso and high rise. Thanks so much!

    2. Glad to hear Talbots worked out for you! I have been wearing my recent purchases from there on repeat, very pleased with them and I will certainly be going back. Agree, the quality is very good and the designs nicely executed. Love the colours!

    3. I really like Talbots' clothes but if you are 00 or 000 at J Crew or a 0P Talbots won't fit. I have sent everything I have ordered this year back except one shirt. There clothes are very wide, even the t-shirts are wide and boxy and short. They have adopted vanity sizing in a huge way. I used to be a 2 Regular and now the 0P is too large.

    4. sega61 - thanks so much for the response... that was exactly what I was afraid of, guess I'll stick to shoes!

  3. Also ordered some swim wear from Boden for an upcoming vacation as the addition of the j crew playa line turned me off of their swim this year. The quality is great and the prints are fun. Their swim is marked down now so if you are in the market I would recommend. Bad news is 7 day return window but you can return.

  4. New Boden catalog arrived today. Free shipping over $49 and if it is your first order, 20% off.

Ordered two dresses and two tops. Boden is the closest thing for me to replace the old J Crew I loved - the styles are feminine, colorful, lovely prints, pretty shoes, quality is excellent. The brand is joyful.

I buy fewer items because it is more $ than promo-addicted J Crew, but Boden is becoming my go-to.

  5. Is anyone familiar with Helmut Lang pant sizing? Various online forums seem to suggest that sizing down is wise. I'm typically a size 2 in J.Crew pants. Waist: 26 to 27. Should I go with a HL size 2 or 4? Thanks!
