Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

    2. have to say pretty happy. no orders since Cyber Monday = not having any returns. easy not to order with final sale on...and the 30% for Canada.
new arrivals are atrocious...but then again I have never liked anything point sur. it looks like they have the seasons mixed up.
I am curious as to who is running the show at J Crew . Its been a dreadful season as far as I can tell..I don't recall ever having had so many issues on so many levels ...

    3. I just received a pair of Point Sur jeans - J3705 in Tall - wide leg crop. I bought them at the 60% off+ 15% coupon sale, so the price was low. I like these jeans more than I expected - they fit my waist and hips well and the loose leg is comfy. My husband is not a fan of any crop pants, but I like this look for warmer weather when long pants can be too hot.

  2. I am going to two locations but clearance was better before xmas bc I had 15 off coupons plus 50 off sale. I really hate Point sur though. Yuck I will not buy. Also. has anyone noticed they changed the labels inside the jeans and the outside waist one to say jcrew/jeans....in my opinion looks super cheap and tacky. not good.

  3. Was planning to stop by this afternoon (because gift cards) and it’s a good thing, because the UPS man just delivered a J Crew mistake. I ordered two Perfect Shirts on 2/23 - one of several orders in a short period of time, I admit. I received one package w the two shirts and the correct invoice, and a second, incorrect package duplicating one of the shirts with pj bottoms and another invoice. Didn’t order those and charged twice! On hold for 30 min and CS was sweet but baffled.

So, check your packages and bills carefully because it appears the operational problems continue.

  4. In addition to the Point Sur jeans I liked, I received my pop-back of the chambray funnel neck blouse in Tall 4.

Once I figured out my size in the funnel neck, I like the style. I often wear a Tall in pants (long legs) but not usually in tops. For this shirt, the Tall gave me the sleeve and front panel length I needed. The back panel is a bit long, but I could shorted that pretty easily if it bothers me. It is a good style to put over skinny pants and still be work-appropriate.

The chambray is a nice color, and more casual than the eyelet or poplin versions. But still ok for business-casual due to the styling and modesty. I can see this with my silk pants in the green jungle cats print or with my black, white or ecru skinny jeans, maybe even my straight leg cords.

    1. I got those same jeans. I find they run a tiny bit small but they will prob stretch a little. I don't hate them, I'm glad I got the tall because the regular length would have been too cropped. I always have a difficult time styling this type of pants though.

      Delete
    2. Yes I am glad they run small, because I have gotten so thin all my pants are too big. These fit, loose, but fit. I am now a 2 or a 0, depending.

      Delete
    3. @Suz Has, I think they are great with 'fashion' sneakers, or sandals, or a mid-height block heel shoe. Or with a taller bootie. Loafers work too. I would not do high heels, or ballet flats since the wide leg needs a bit more shoe to balance it. On top I prefer a fitted top, tucked or waist length. But you might wear a cropped boxy top, as long as you show enough waist to have a slim point between the top and your hips.

  5. I’ll be going but only because after a 46 minute wait the cs rep who was in a big hurry i might add said it would cost me $7.50 in return shipping to send things back

  6. I went to do some returns and, because I am weak, left the store with a Liberty shirt in pink floral multi (J5565) because store was extra 50% off off sale items, so the shirt was about $50. (But tack on the 13% sales tax and it gets closer to $60)

Ironically, I was very proud of myself this morning because I had removed it from my cart before cashing out (how pathetic does that sound), but it was prettier in person than I expected.

It also seemed like a sign... the shirt popped back in my size online and then is on the sale rack at the store?!

  7. Hi all! Sorry I missed all of the Christmas cheer around here. I was laid up with food poisoning so I had nothing to contribute to the cute outfits thread, but enjoyed reading everything to pass the time. I've received some retail and Mercantile things recently that I've enjoyed.
Turtleneck dress in supersoft yarn - K3860 - true to size for me (M). I got the seashell color which is a soft peach/pink/coral. The fabric is from the "super soft" collection which is teased/puffy.
Relaxed chambray boy shirt - H7023 - I took a tall M (I'm 5'6" but prefer a longer shirt). The chambray is on the thinner side and I like the relaxed/boyfriend fit of it. Great for layering.
High block heeled mules in suede - J8226 - I got these in black and went up a half size. Probably should've gotten my real size. I wish they were leather as it seems to be more wet than most winters here, but these will likely be a keep.
Mercantile Boiled wool topcoat - K2205 - I got this two sizes larger than my pants size in the deep blush color. It fits well and looks slimming probably from the seams. There is no lining, but I don't mind it. Great for the price point in my opinion.
Mercantile Textured turtleneck - J7881 - For those looking for a 100% cotton sweater, this is it. It comes in charcoal, ivory, and pink (marled with white). It's a great tunic length for those in the mid 5-foot or shorter range. I sized up for room.

Thanks again to all for providing a wonderful place to communicate/commiserate/celebrate J. Crew throughout these years. Here's to many more!

  8. I went by Brookfield for returns today and the new arrivals were uninspired, to put it nicely. More word tees, acrylic blend sweaters and I saw that horrible gold/yellow chiffon print in person - it looks even worse than on the website. Didn’t see any new shoes or accessories. The instore promo is same as website re final sale 50% off. I saw how pilly the Fair Isle sweaters are getting just on the racks. No thank you.

I know this is going to sound ridiculous here but speaking of shopping bans I feel like I need to really be more minimal.

I did buy a lot but returned a lot so I don't think I did so bad this season...however...most of the time when I go out Im in my uniform of a black sweater and jeans or black pants. So what's the problem? As mentioned before I have a stock pile of black sweaters that looks like crap. I only bought myself three sweaters this year, all different, and only one is a blend. But what I SHOULD have done was only bought one if I could only find the perfect shape. That said I'm super happy with the merino balloon sleeve turtleneck and the price I paid, the red gap sweater is cotton and comfy, and the yes no sweater is the novelty item.
Even shoes, I think I only bought the snakeskin boots. I'm contemplating the bronze day boot from everlane, although I have gold Madewell boots that are more casual and flat.
For myself, i like to add personality with my coats and shoes. Even bags...I haven't bought a new bag since I bought a bunch of longchamp le pliage in several colors and sizes. Between those and gifts from my mother in law when she moved I haven't needed much else.
So here is my dilemma. I love new things but generally repeat my outfits. I like uniform dressing. So...do I find another hobby and instead buy simple investment pieces each year?

I really like uniform dressing actually, the older I get. I’ve had my post-retirement uniform planned for years: cigarette pants, striped shirt, Hermès scarf, repetto flats. Problem is I’m about 3 decades from retirement, but I’ve been buying for it for years!
I do have to dress up for my current job (as in no denim, tees, elastic waists, chino pants) so that’s what I’m buying for, but I want to stop and just wear what I have. As I get older and become less trend chasing, i mind less repeating key pieces or outfits - personal style means having a style or pieces that people recognize as you. I guess this what fashion folks call being timeless? I will never again buy anything with a ridiculous ruffle or multi-tiers. They’re just too recognizable and dating.

      Suz HasDecember 28, 2018 at 7:05 PM
Seriously! I bought that ruffle sleeve sweater last winter, put it on once and then felt like a ridiculous bull fighter.
I don't work a regular job, and even my own private work I'm scaling back, so I really only dress up for running errands and going out. Most of the time I'm in yoga clothes because I actually do yoga everyday. Of course I like to have options for when I do put real clothes on, but I think I'd be better off buying less and better.

    5. Eeps, I love your retirement outfit! My office is casual most of the year (not tech casual but a couple of notches below business casual) so that's pretty close to what I wear every day in the warm weather. Cold weather uniform is a boots, pencil skirt, merino v-neck, scarf, and some sort of wool blazer or jacket.

I'm older (ten years older than when I started reading this blog!) and I agree about ignoring the trend-hunting.
It's not about giving up; it's about NGAF. I wear my SW 5050 boots three or four days a week in the winter and no one cares about the repeats. SW has made those boots for nearly 30 years.

I'm sad that J.Crew stopped making merino wool v-necks. Those from Uniqlo are actually not bad but no one did colors like J.Crew. Note that I'm using the past tense, alas.

The ponte dresses are one thing that I am buying from J.Crew this year, subject to caveat below. Throw those on with some Spanx tights and a scarf and it's instant polish. Of course the scarf is a necessity because JC was too cheap to understitch the linings so the necklines are wonky.

      Delete
    6. Hexicon, the last merino v neck I got from Jcrew had holes before I even wore it. 😭

    7. @Suz Has, I agree with your point about buying investment pieces. You’ll wear them for years and they won’t go out of style. I think it’s about balance too because sometimes you buy something that’s just fun/whimsical; it’s not something you’re going to wear for an extended period. I just bought a sequin tunic dress from H&M that I’m going to wear with J Crew leather leggings & Gucci boots for New Years. It was $14. Even when I purchase investment pieces, I still try to buy them on sale whenever possible. I’m definitely buying & spending less; it’s a function of where I am in my career, and a professiomal dress code that’s become more relaxed @ my university. Good luck with whatever you decide!

    1. Good read, thanks for sharing! I try to follow industry news and this is the first time I have seen it overtly stated that Mickey and James Brett “clashed” over new initiatives such as Mercantile and Nevereven that “cheapened” the brand. Amen to that.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the link! I think they nailed it with the “identity crisis”, the NeverEver line being a prime example.

      Delete
    3. They certainly do have a problem, I for one am finding it more and more difficult to find items that are well made, of excellent quality and style. What I don't understand is there are several bloggers out there promoting everything, receiving discounted items or free while self promoting themselves. Have they no shame? Certainly no taste.

      Delete
    4. That Nevereven line was ghastly IMO, I don't know what they were thinking. And as much as I hate to say it, my socks over the last few seasons had some quality of issues too. The glimmer of hope can be seen sometimes but it seems like there is no continuity with management to get everyone on the same page at the same time, especially the IT function.

      Delete
    5. @Lynn agree about the bloggers who have literally nothing negative to say when we all know quality and design has gone to the toilet.

    7. Alexis started this blog in 2008, at what many of us would agree was JC's design and image peak. (Mrs. O.! The beloved 2007 Paris catalog!) After Nordstrom had its own identity crisis in the early 2000s I moved most of my shopping to JC and loved that JC could bring me everything from bikinis to ballgowns.

JC has had ten years of free insight into the needs and wishes and shopping habits of its most fervent fans. And yet they've run it into the ground. How many different ways must we say "classic with a twist" before they will get it. Preppy meets Paris. Stunning, flattering, and unexpected colors. Remarkable prints (Library! Peacock paisley!). Affordable luxury (we know it's high street and not couture, but it shouldn't be Zara or H&M either). What will it take?

Other than my ponte dresses and my noteworthy Royal Stewart tuxedo suit, I haven't purchased anything this fall. (Except gift socks, as mentioned in the article, LOL.) I used to sigh when the catalogs arrived, because there were so many beautiful (natural fiber!) choices, and how was I to decide among them? Not a problem these days. I wish JC could to something with the information it has acquired here.

      Delete
    8. So agree, Hexicon, the Golden Years of J Crew were circa 2008. Many of the garments in those days were so beautiful in design, construction, and fabric. J Crew was admired and aspirational. I understand how the grousing about quality and design decline might not make as much sense to JCAs who discovered the brand in later years.

J Crew has never paid much attention to this blog and in my “professional opinion” (for what that’s worth), I think it is two things: 1) as marketers they recognize the extreme brand loyalty, and they know that most of the customers here will complain but still buy, so they don’t need to invest us, and 2) they have more control over and invest in the social media influencers who are essentially salespeople online (y’all know the blogs I’m talking about) that gush over everything and never give an honest review.

I believe that eventually it will become clear that J Crew bet on the wrong horse. We all hear that “mid tier” or “bridge” retail lines are supposedly dying, and the womens’ clothing market is bifurcating into designer and mass. Mass is not working out for J Crew, and it’s so sad that they have raced to the bottom when they elevated and “owned” mid tier. They sacrificed a lucrative market - us!

    10. IMO Fall 2004-2007 were just as good or even better. Mickey had something to prove after Gap and he came out with a bang. I couldn't stop looking at that first catalog and every one after that. Then Fall 2005 and 2006 with all the ornate tweed and jeweled shoes, jeweled shirts and cardigans, gorgeous tweed jackets, argyle, herringbone, I have kept at least one of each catalog since then.

      J. Crew went public in 2006 and the recession hit in 2008. I think the combination hurt them and they chose to scale back quality in an attempt to show YOY profit growth while also trying to chase a wealthier customer. I remember Mickey remarking in interviews when he would see a customer wearing designer shoes or carrying a designer bag as proof he was getting the desired demographic. Some complained about the fall 2010 catalog as so over the top but I loved it. What we didn't see was how much money they were apparently losing.

It's funny that was eight years ago, it seems like yesterday.

      Delete
    11. @Elizabeth I agree with you. The coats and cashmere items from that time period were top notch. My plaid cashmere and dream sweaters from 2006 and 2007 are still in terrific condition.

  13. Canadian JCAs - after disappointing (slightly insulting) its Canadian customers with a measly extra 30% off discount on sale items starting Dec 26 (in contrast to the US 50% off), today the 50% off BIGGERSALE code is now showing as being valid in Canada and the US and the details show it as being from December 26(!) to December 31. I guess they intended to give us the same discount, but somehow messed up?

I stockpiled them in the majority of colors and have unopened boxes of them in all pretty colors. Drakes I’m missing too. Their patterns were unique and gorgeous. Cashmere featherweight and the regular cashmere. The product they call cashmere today is insulting to those of us that are familiar with the real deal. Pair and London stores I am assuming do fairly well or shall I say did? Going back a few years when just about everything JCrew was great they were packed. The locals loved the brand as well as secondary tourists. I won’t get started on Ratti....

    4. I didn't get to check out the Paris store earlier this month, as retail in the 6th and 7th was closed for les manifestations, but I visited the London store a few years ago and I'm OK with these locations. The London store felt like a nice fresh American breeze, and even though I admit to Francophilia and enjoy being mistaken for French when in France, I am here for le style Americain.

For me, a milepost on the aforementioned ruinous road was when I lost three cuff buttons from my tweed hacking jacket on the first wearing, and JC refused to provide me with replacements. I didn't want a new jacket, just some extra buttons, since my losses already exceeded the spare buttons that came with the jacket.

  18. I finally got my double leopard topcoat in the right size, tthe one they sent me AFTER I reordered myself one is still floating around waiting to be delivered...anyway, I love it. The size 4 fits nicely over a button down and fitted sweater.

Speaking of which, last night I wore my embellished shoulder wool sweater for the second time this season. I wore it exactly the way I had intended on wearing the embellished fair isle, over a striped button down, with the slim boyfriend jeans and Avery tweed pumps. This sweater is all wool and probably four years old and aside from some minimal pilling under the arms, it looks great. I've handwashed and laid flat to dry, I almost sold this in a purging frenzy and I'm so glad I didn't.

    1. The other thing I've worn several times this season and always get complimented on is the double breasted check cost from two years ago, the one that had the matching mini skirt. I sold the mini, as adorable as it was, and I'm glad I did since I now wear the coat as a statement piece. My only complaint is the gold buttons forced me to change my earrings. I wish they used those leather buttons they used to use instead, but if it was really annoying I could always swap them out.
I liked this year's similar colored check coat (black, ivory and forest green, I think) although those drop shoulders can be problematic. I always feel chic when I wear this coat, the fit is flattering and tailored.

    2. I'm glad to hear you found the right size because the leopard topcoat looks fabulous on you. After seeing your Instagram post with the ill-fitting but still adorable coat, I ordered it for myself, too. I'm still waiting for the package to arrive, but I think I'll love it. I've been a huge fan of leopard prints for years, so I'm trying to pick up a few pieces now that it's having a moment. I also purchased the leopard print velvet Seavees and they're super cute. I think I might like them even better than the gray wool Seavees that I also recently purchased.

We had a house fire three weeks ago and everything has been removed from our house. We were lucky we survived. It's been a life altering experience. When we move back in 6 months down the road, I plan to cull my wardrobe and switch to a minimal approach in the future. Keeping only the best things. Probably not buying new things unless they are absolutely wonderful and irresistible.

    2. vava,
Wow, how heartbreaking, but thank goodness the loss was material and you're ok.
Were you able to salvage your possessions or is everything a loss? I know sometimes everything gets damaged either by water or smoke.

  20. For those JCAs who are having issues keeping track of refunds arising from returns and price adjustments - this is not a complete answer, but I've started paying with PayPal. I started paying with PayPal because they announced they were closing down the Toronto Eaton Center store so I wanted the ability to use the PayPal refund costs refund benefit in case I returned by mail, but I discovered an additional benefit to using PayPal. When J Crew (i-parcel) processes a refund, I get an email from PayPal telling me the amount of the refund and as an added bonus the email also give me the J Crew order number associated with the refund. This is so much better than wondering if the price adjustment went through and trying to go through the credit card statements and puzzle out what the price adjustment amount must have been for a particular order. Or calling the 1-800 number and waiting to ask whether the refund has gone through and for what amount.

Clearly, if I find it a pain to track the refunds I am buying too much! (But that's a post for another day) And PayPal is not a complete fix, but I am finding it helps a lot.

Please note that if you are paying with PayPal, you have two opportunities during the checkout process to pay with PayPal : (1) you can click the PayPal button instead of "check out now"; or (2) you can click "check out now" and then when it takes you to the payment options page, you can select PayPal. I only use the 2nd method because I remember a JCA mentioned that if you use the 1st method that the order doesn't end up in your complete history.

Please also note that I have never placed a US order so maybe things might be different for US orders placed via PayPal. Can any US JCAs confirm that US orders get the same refund emails from PayPal?

    1. after having done the work of sorting out my returns from cyber monday and black friday...I am enjoying the break from all the "work" my number one reason for not ordering since Nov. was all the nonsense. I had one item I was returning to store...that I was told because of all the price adjs that it was already "returned". I replied "gee....if I had not tried to return item...I would have had it for free? " no answer to this.
By the way...I did leave the item...but tech. I should/could have kept it. I am throwing my hands up in the air at this!

  21. I’m not on a shopping ban per se but I’m laser focused on saving money to buy some really chic dresses/outfits for our Europe trip next summer. We are going for 12 days and I plan to bring six day outfits and 2 night outfits (we are renting an apartment with laundry so we only have to bring carry ons). I don’t have much faith that j crew will take up much space in my suitcase :(. I lamented on my insta that Kate spade will be in the toilet. After a very scary spring debut for the new designer, summer is looking a little better and I see one skirt I like (katespadelookbook.com/summer2019). Some cute options coming from boden (bodenpreview.com) though. Wish I could see j crew summer options!

  22. Taking a JC shopping break for the beginning of 2019, so I cashed everything in on the reversible Liberty puffer coat, the Liberty puffer scarf (love the review that said it was a full-on Lenny Kravitz scarf!), and a pair of heart socks for Valentine's Day. After BIGGERSALE, my 25% off code, and $50 off $100 card the total came to about $50. JC botched my last batch of returns so it's time to take some time off, but I'll always visit JCA. Happy and healthy 2019, all!

  23. @silver_lining, did you use the extra 10% off as well? I received an additional 10% off on sale items via an email received yesterday. If not call CS they will enter a code for you.

    1. Hi Lynn - no, I didn't receive an extra 10%... actually, I didn't really look too closely at my JC emails so will take a look. : )
