JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  2. Does anyone know when the biggersale promo ends? I see an asterisk but can't find additional info.

Also, FWIW the Everlane site always crashes on me too. Trying to decide if it's worth it to spend $88 on an Everlane chunky wool turtleneck, and $70 or so on a chunky crewneck. I love both types and wear them to death but I'm concerned about pilling and if the cost is actually worth it.

    4. LOL Suz!
I'm on a desktop, so I clicked on the tiny "details" link within the gray banner at the top. I couldn't do/see it from my smartphone.

    5. maybe US will get 60% and maybe they would throw a bone to Canada..maybe 30% again. so over J Crews promos for DEC. Just beyond silly IMO.

  4. anyone want to join me in a shopping ban/break from J Crew?
with the fiascos of shipping, emails not answered, on hold for 30-45 mins. and the last straw 20% less of a boxing day promo than US...I am going to try one. I hope for all of Jan and hopefully Feb. just looked at the small rollout (new arrivals) online. I never was a point sur fan...and it looks like J C and point sur have the season mixed up. the new dresses look like night gowns.and summer ones at that! too many ruffles ...in the wrong places.
since I returned most of my black friday cyber monday items (fit was so off...everything was too big?) i managed to get through pre xmas and xmas from my closet.I was not that hard...
So I know I really don't need anymore clothing...so it may be easier than I think.

    2. opps . "it was not that hard"
Last order placed cyber monday...so it has already been one mth of "no orders'.
have to say I still have looked online a little. but finding time away from J Crew had been a welcomed break. the fact i have not had to wait for pkgs or check billing statements has in its self has been a relief.

    3. I need to take a break! Only because I bought a ton this month, and will be getting orders throughout January due to the slow shipping. The only thing that would get me is a unicorn popback, but haven't seen one of those in a year or more.
I also see no must-haves among the new arrivals. What on earth is this monstrosity - item L0115??

    4. @eeps - Why did I look? Some things it is better not to see!

    5. I need a break as well; over shopped, over spent and then there's the bit with the website. Add that to orders moving so slowly to me I forgot I clicked buy. But the largest reason to stop is my closet is full with no room or need. Maybe I'll see something that pulls me in since it is so different and fresh. But that seems doubtful from JCrew based upon current offerings. The last few orders have been from BR and Club Monaco both arrived in well under a week. I have to hand to both of those companies for quick shipping along with solidly made items.

    7. I'd like to take a break but I have a $50 credit and the extra 25% off. There are men's merino hooded sweaters I'm,considering for myself and my husband. I bought him a cotton wool one and he loves it. I'm just not sure what size I should take. The measurements for XS seem as small as women's XS But it doesn't make sense that I'd be a small when my husband is a medium.
Other than that everything I was considering sold out.

    8. I used to buy men's JC sweaters because the quality was better. When I was XS, I bought the men's XS and it fit like a women's S to me, but it depends on the sweater fit. The rollneck sweaters would fit more like an oversized women's S or small M, while the shawl collar pullovers fit like a regular S.

    9. I am un the mood to buy something (pathetic, I think) but won't simply because I know the extra 25% exists, and I don't have it.

Suz, I think an XS in the men's sweater is the way to go, but I do have an very old size large or XL cashmere sweater of my ex-husbands that for some reason looks fabulous on me!

  5. @eeps, why, that is what you wear when you play tea with your Calico Critters and simply must must MUST have a dress that matches them.

  6. I know this is going to sound ridiculous here but speaking of shopping bans I feel like I need to really be more minimal.

I did buy a lot but returned a lot so I don't think I did so bad this season...however...most of the time when I go out Im in my uniform of a black sweater and jeans or black pants. So what's the problem? As mentioned before I have a stock pile of black sweaters that looks like crap. I only bought myself three sweaters this year, all different, and only one is a blend. But what I SHOULD have done was only bought one if I could only find the perfect shape. That said I'm super happy with the merino balloon sleeve turtleneck and the price I paid, the red gap sweater is cotton and comfy, and the yes no sweater is the novelty item.
Even shoes, I think I only bought the snakeskin boots. I'm contemplating the bronze day boot from everlane, although I have gold Madewell boots that are more casual and flat.
For myself, i like to add personality with my coats and shoes. Even bags...I haven't bought a new bag since I bought a bunch of longchamp le pliage in several colors and sizes. Between those and gifts from my mother in law when she moved I haven't needed much else.
So here is my dilemma. I love new things but generally repeat my outfits. I like uniform dressing. So...do I find another hobby and instead buy simple investment pieces each year?

    1. I really like uniform dressing actually, the older I get. I’ve had my post-retirement uniform planned for years: cigarette pants, striped shirt, Hermès scarf, repetto flats. Problem is I’m about 3 decades from retirement, but I’ve been buying for it for years!
I do have to dress up for my current job (as in no denim, tees, elastic waists, chino pants) so that’s what I’m buying for, but I want to stop and just wear what I have. As I get older and become less trend chasing, i mind less repeating key pieces or outfits - personal style means having a style or pieces that people recognize as you. I guess this what fashion folks call being timeless? I will never again buy anything with a ridiculous ruffle or multi-tiers. They’re just too recognizable and dating.

    2. Seriously! I bought that ruffle sleeve sweater last winter, put it on once and then felt like a ridiculous bull fighter.
I don't work a regular job, and even my own private work I'm scaling back, so I really only dress up for running errands and going out. Most of the time I'm in yoga clothes because I actually do yoga everyday. Of course I like to have options for when I do put real clothes on, but I think I'd be better off buying less and better.
