JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Posted yesterday but it was more of a vent because I haven't received orders, so I'm shopping my closet for festive attire.

Our holiday parties start this weekend and for the first time in ages we have three weekends of events, before Christmas. For several years we had overlapping parties which gets difficult! I mix it up between being a skirt or fancy pants or doing jeans, a blazer and heels.

I asked this weeks' hostess what she was wearing as she requested festive attire. It's supposed to be cold here so I think I'm going to go with my metallic Langford wide leg pants from Madewell from last winter. NOTE: this year they are calling them the EMMETT but it looks like the same pant.
I may repeat them again on the 22 as it's a totally different crowd and it's also a fairly fancy party where the host couple dresses up a bit.
The week in between I may break out my Parke blazer in tartan (glad I got it last year on clearance, this year they didn't make it) with slouchy jeans and heels. On second thought, all black is always a good idea and my Ryder leather pants with a slouchy black sweater (not sure which as they all kind of look like junk, but I have a gap bat wing sweater from last winter that might work) with either sparkly shoes or my colorblock Mary Janes which have the perfect holiday jewel tones.

How about everyone else? Happy holidays to all.

    1. Your party outfits sound perfect. I envy your tartan blazer. I passed on it because I didn’t think I’d wear it much, but now I’m having regrets because it’s so perfect for the holidays.

I’m happily shopping my closet this winter, too. I’m also happily unloading quite a few unneeded items on Poshmark. I’ve always gone the donation route due to laziness, but I’m finding selling my extras to be more financially rewarding than I expected. It’s amazing how often I’ve sold used items for as much or more than I paid new.

    2. Thanks Jeanne. The fit of the blazer is a little awkward. It's long and wide through the body but I found it works best open, with slouchy jeans and nothing skinny on the bottom. If I don't wear it for any of these parties I might wear it Christmas Eve.

    3. I had to look them up, those metallic Langford pants look gorgeous! I have a ridiculous number of velvet pants in various colours and cuts, so I try to wear them to any events I go to in December as they’re easy enough to dress up or down. The only party I’m attending is fairly casual, and our family Christmas is completely casual, but I still go with velvet and sparkles for both as it’s the holidays! I picked up some velvet Sloan pants from BR last year, as well as a cute but totally unnecessary velvet jacket from Simon’s, so I’ll be mixing those in with my existing pieces. Some years I pull out my beloved sequined jacket from JCrew, it’s pretty old and I have it in my mind that it was called the Starry Night jacket? Might be HO09 or HO10 but I still love it.

    4. Thank you. I have to look up your jacket. I have a tweed one with sparkle from about the same time. It's an unusual tulip shape and at the time I bought it was one of the most expensive items I ever purchased. I just loved it. I don't wear it often but it's a special piece.

    5. I’ve confirmed it was the Starry Night Cardigan (not jacket as I originally thought).

    6. If anyone is feeling regret for not buying it years ago, I saw several Starry Night cardigans for sale on Poshmark today at quite reasonable prices. You can probably find it on Ebay as well. Search for "sequin cardigan." It's such a cute holiday jacket.

  2. fyi...J Crew has changed Canadian parcel delivery to UPS due to the postal strike. they are not updating delivery time until it reaches Canada UPS. I spoke with CS this morning. none of the price adj had been put through on theses orders, they are doing them manually. CS did all five of my orders over the phone for the crediting of pa. I asked that all 5 of my $12 shipping fees be refunded as all orders are well over the 10days. they complied. no wonder J Crew is losing $$.

  3. Any ideas on how to style the Silk Twill Wrap Blazer in jungle cat print, other than with a T-shirt and jeans or the matching pants? Looking for outfits I can wear to work/corporate/conservative environment and will also look good with winterwear aka boots or tights or layers upon layers.

    1. I'm not sure. I was really tempted by the tropical floral blazer and realized I wouldn't wear it enough. I could see it with coordinating slim pants and a turtleneck. You could wear the pants and turtleneck monochromatic and wear the jacket open. Over Slim black or navy pants a la Audrey Hepburn? It depends,on your proportions,

    2. I would layer it over a plain jersey turtleneck in black/grey/green, and pair with a slim skirt in one of those same colours, or a pale pink or blue if you have it. Would also look good with dark green or olive pants imo. So many lovely colours in that print.

    3. I have worn the blouse with my winter white wool maddies and gold pointed toe flats.

    4. Thanks for the suggestions! I was also thinking a turtleneck (the contrast trim ribbed one from last year) and blue Camerons. As for skirts, I don't own a lot of slim skirts because of my proportions, but I do have the bow pencil skirt (G8440) which is a sky blue, not a light blue?
@Cheri - that sounds gorgeous! I don't have any white pants or skirts though because of my clumsiness. I assume that combo works because it's a light colored bottom paired with a dark colored jacket? My work pants are mostly black, maroon or dark gray though.

    1. I got that in the mail today too! A very lovely surprise, especially because I'm not a cardholder. Good to know you don't need to use the whole balance in one go.

    2. I received one and purchased the Belted sheath dress in black watch tartan. After the promo, an extra 15% card and the $25 gift card, I only paid $63.09.

    3. I received one as well, and I’m not a cardholder. Stocked up on Lanolips using the current 40% promo and the catalogue’s 15% code. My lips are happy.
