Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

  1. I'll be going to return the dress in French Floral, which I had ordered from retail. It is now listed on the retail site as being from Mercantile, so I'm glad enough people called them out on it for them to be more transparent about where the product is coming from. The label on the collar is Mercantile, even though the cardboard tag attached by the plastic doodad is the slim, rectangular, brown retail tag. I agree with the current single review on the retail site- the quality is not there (lots of broken little threads coming off the seaming, especially on the under slip), and it is dowdy. The sleeves are pretty voluminous.

I just looked- this year, I have spent $37 at J. Crew on 2 items so far. This time last year, I had kept 4 items for $171, and 2016's YTD was also 4 items for $120. So, I'm buying half as much J. Crew as I used to and for much lower prices. I actually purchased way less total items in 2017, and an equal number of total items in 2016 to this year, so it's not just that I'm buying less overall. My proportion of J. Crew to total purchase ratio is way down, with more of my closet coming from Loft, Boden, and eBay purchases of oldschool J. Crew, which I separated out. Given the decline in both design and quality I've seen lately at J. Crew, I don't really think that trend is going to turn around by the end of the year, unless the fall collection shows a significant change of direction from the brand back to what they used to do so well. Items like the regatta skirt give me a glimmer of hope...but it's really hard to give J. Crew my money these days- there just isn't anything I want to buy!

    1. Yes I noticed these are now labeled as "Mercantile" - probably since there were so many complaints in the reviews. It is ironic that many of these are also labeled "Best Seller" and have 2 and 3 star reviews. Maybe they were a best seller when customers thought they would be cute printed dresses with the quality one desires from J Crew retail, not factory. Anyway, some of the prints ARE cute, but I hate the deception.

    2. I had a feeling it wasn’t J.Crew. They would never pick those floral prints; so dated and not their aesthetic. I knew something was off when I saw it rolled out online...

    3. See, I think the French floral is kind of a return to their oldschool abstract prints I used to love! A lot of the smaller ditsy prints are kind of uninspired to me though.

    4. I only track my dollar spending, and mine is about the same as 2017 so far. However I feel like I bought fewer things, so maybe last year I got really great deals for lots of things and this year I'm spending more on fewer items. Last year I bought lots of summer separates; this year so far I've gotten three coats. I'm surprised at my own spending though - I *thought* I was buying less - certainly feels like it.

  2. I just don't understand the "Mercantile" concept on the regular site. Either be Factory or Mercantile, and do it consistently. There is already a link to the Factory website, is Mercantile different than Factory? I thought we learned it was the same thing. If they are so insistent of mixing the two, at least dedicate a section or treat it like a specialty collaboration so that consumers know. Marketing the same dress at two entirely different price points, and implying one is a higher quality than the other, seems to put J Crew on the wrong side of honest consumer practices. Even if the leadership is trying different marketing strategies, this feels really sketchy if not illegal altogether. Honestly, what on earth is going on with the company??

  3. New promo seems to be free shipping and 30% off some select items. This is a pass for me, as I was already getting free shipping with my JC card. It would be nice if stores had 50% off clearance.

  4. Does anyone know what the sale is in stores?
    Anything off sale price? Thanks

  5. Didn't order the with last promo. Definitely not ordering with this one.

I do have some returns to do since nothing's been fitting right or it's just poor quality. The cashiers never ask me why I'm returning it tho. They just put "too small" as the reason.

    2. Mine marks “changed mind,” too. I might be insulted if they assumed everything was too small for me. :P

    3. the irony is that most of the time it's too big! HAHAHAHA

      Delete
    4. They never ask me anywhere why I return. It's always changed mind. That makes me think they no longer care about feedback, because I assume that's how they used to find out why products were being returned.

      Delete
    5. If it's not my usual SA, they usually ask if there's anything wrong with it, otherwise the reason is almost always "changed mind." They must not view it as an opportunity to gather data. If I'm returning via mail, I always indicate the exact reason I'm returning.

  7. Off topic...I know this has been discussed before but I'm having trouble yielding any results via the search function. I was an avid Polyvore user to plan my outfits/organize my closet and as several other JCAs know, the site was abruptly shut down last month with no replacement.

I'm looking for outfit planning/organization apps/ideas. I am on Android so the Stylebook app that is popular among iPhone users isn't an option. I have been using Closetspace which I am finding somewhat useful but I'm missing the template layout of PV to plan a week of outfits at a time, etc. Just curious what others use/what works because I am struggling! #firstworldproblems

    1. @Anne - a colleague of mine is android as well and she researched and found an app I think called mycloset. I'll confirm the name with her. She seems to like it and it looks like it had some similarities from what she showed me in a quick demo.

  8. Picked up a ship-to-store yesterday and sale was 30% off. Same old stuff as last time I was in so I didn’t bother looking closely. Received the Simple Collar Necklace in silver yesterday as well, which I had ordered during last promo. I really like it - very pretty and yes, simple. It was packaged beautifully as well. Haven’t ordered any J Crew jewelry in forever since they decided everything has to be made of paper and string.

I also popped in to a Factory today en route to a meeting. Most of the store was 40-
50% off and sale was 60% off. There were a few regular retail items in the sale section - some really old coats and sweaters and a gray wool dress w retail tags.

Having been in both Retail and Factory locations within the past 24 hours, I have to say that the quality difference between them with the current merch has narrowed to a sliver. If even that - some of the tees and shirts at Factory seem a better cotton fabric. Compare today’s garments and it’s virtually the same, which I never thought years ago.

    1. Ruffles- I was thinking the same thing as I completed the factory survey I posted about the other day. Years ago there was a world of difference between retail and factory! Now not so much. Even more crazy is factory offered 100% silk items back in the day and they were inferior to retail silk offerings. Now it is all poly at factory and some of the retail silk seems worst then the old factory silk. Times have really changed and not for the better. I agree that some of the factory tees and tops are thicker and see better quality than retail. I also like the skirt and dress length at factory as I am on the short side but I could see how those items would be way to short for tall gals. I will just continue to be picky with my purchases at both.

      Delete
    2. Factory used to be great. I'm holding on to my Factory merino sweaters and printed silk tops. Really miss the quality throughout the J Crew family. You really have to search now to find the few gems.

      Delete
    3. Yup, I have primarily been a retail shopper for many years and I loved Collection in its day, but Factory does have some thing I really like - Studio Tees, pencil skirts and Anyas, which are way better than the crappy new Ceces.

What seems to has happened is that Factory quality has dropped a little and Retail quality has dropped a LOT, so there is little difference anymore.

  10. So I received my 50% off orders and most of it is going back. I honestly keep trying!! Wanted to comment on the New Balance. The gray slip on’s make my feet look like boats. They are comfortable but look like clown shoes on me. Going back for sure. The pink leather court shoes are really cute. I sized down from my regular 8.5-9 to an 8. I feel like I could maybe do a 7.5 but not sure and not sure if I want the hassle of exchanging. I need to try these on longer. Hope these work for others!!!

    1. @JessF, thank you for posting about the grey NB, I bought them too but it will be a while before I receive them. Sounds like they will be a return. I am trying to avoid returns but the sales suck me in and the cycle continues. Glad you liked the pink NB they look nice.

    2. Funny I received both the gray NB, pink and gold NB court shoes.
In the gray I ordered 8.5 and 9 and could really do either. My 16 yo loves these and honestly I only like them because I can slip them on. The 9 is a little loose but the 8.5 just fits. I'm going to let my middle daughter try and see if either works better for her.
I ordered the court shoe in 8.5. I don't think the 8 would work for me. For reference I seem to be 8.5 in most jcrew shoes, a 9 in some. For ages I thought I was a 9 but I seem to be more of 8.5 these days

      Delete
    3. Also, though I thought I'd prefer the gold I actually like the pink better because it seems more neutral. I'll try both with other clothes though.

    4. I also bought both the pink and gold court shoes...for the price I was expecting to keep both but I don’t like the pink on me. I just can’t seem to make soft pinks work...even on my feet!! I think the gold will be versatile and will work spring and fall. I went a 1/2 size down..an 8 from my usual 8 1/2 and I think they fit well.

    5. Im sorry to hear the gray NB didn't work for you! I got my regular size 7 (arrived yesterday) and loved them right out of the box. So much so that I ordered orange today and am now stalking for black. They are so squishy, I know understand why people wear sneakers all the time.

  11. Received the first of my 50% orders and nearly everything is going back. The asymmetrical Liberty dress is awkward - didn’t realize how much which shoulder gets the strap but having it on the left shoulder made my right shoulder feel very naked, like I was on the verge of a wardrobe malfunction. The dress itself looked a bit childish on with the big ruffle. It’s a very slim fit and I wasn’t comfortable in it. Gorgeous print and colors though.
The embroidered midi skirt in white accentuated my thick waist. Too much white, and the red belt was no good. I am a 2/4 and got an XSP and it fit perfectly so very very big.
The Dragon Diffusion woven flats were a surprise love. I got the red and they were more brick red than true red, so I am exchanging for the white/navy. They are very comfortable and well made. I took my usual European size (37 for US6) and it fit perfectly.

    1. I think much of mine will be returned, too. I’m going to try everything on again when I’m not in a cranky mood. Maybe it’ll look better then, lol.

Part of the reason for my cranky mood: I’m still trying to find a new swimsuit(s). You may possibly remember the J.Crew high neck zip front swimsuit that I reluctantly returned (too big + wonky zipper). I really liked the high neck style, though. I thought it was quite flattering and would be very functional for swimming w/o worrying about wardrobe malfunctions. Anyway, I ordered 3 high neck Miraclesuit swimsuits from tjmaxx.com to try, but I think they’re going back, too. The way the top is cut totally different from the J.Crew suit. The armholes are huge and the top is not cut for larger chests. I felt like my boobs were flattened and pushed out the armholes. Not flattering or comfortable and I’d be worried about possible malfunctions when swimming. So I went back and ordered SIX more to try. Something has to work!

    2. Good luck @ Jeanne, hopefully some work out! I hate buying swimsuits, I like a lot of Jcrew ones but don’t have luck with the bottoms. I prefer more coverage for the butt but I do have quite a few tops and a couple of one pieces since the torso is long enough for me.

  13. A lovely old school pink cotton print is coming in a skirt and dress. I saw it on @kristymayn's instagram. It reminds me of a print from 2008 or 2009. Can't remember the name of it, but I remember trying on a top back then in the print.

  14. Received the eyelet funnelneck top in black, 2 tall. It's SO long. Much longer than the striped version which I got in a 4 tall with the intention of tucking the front. The back totally covers my butt which never happens. I'm hoping the regular (aka classic) 2 fits. The fabric is pretty and I like the fit of the collar. A thin strapped black bra didn't really show through the holes.

  16. Got two orders overnighted last night from the 50% off sale. Makes no sense why as they had several days left until the “due by” date.

One order had the drapey popover in black (not my style albeit soft) and tie waist t shirt in white (super soft and cute basic). Have to exchange the tie waist tee as it came with a hole in it. The other order had rugby dresses in it. I think I’m going to keep the Black and Tan in my normal dress/shift size as it’s different from the other navy/white shifts that I have from JCrew. It was a great buy at $21 (50% off plus a 15% card I had received).

Still waiting on slouchy side tie cardigan and some black Billie cropped jeans.

    1. I wish J.Crew would overnight my orders! Mine regularly miss the “guaranteed” date. The usual process is to leave orders in the “processing” status for several days, then ship by the slowest available method. I’ve had packages miss the due date by more than a week. Way to make customers feel valued. :(

  17. My package with the grey New Balances was stolen off my porch yesterday... :( I need to call and file a claim, hoping maybe it turns up but not likely. My glen plaid Dover blazer arrived today and I'm very happy with it - took the smaller of my two blazer sizes like the solid ones I own. I tried the matte crepe shorts too in two sizes but I don't love them, the rise is a little weird so back they go.

    3. That's frustrating! I have never had a package stolen but, about a year ago I had ordered the J.Crew Icon Trench coat and my Great Pyrenees opened the package and ripped the coat to shreds. I came home to find him laying on what was left of it .

      Delete
    4. I guess I don't know for sure they were stolen but my neighbor had a similar issue earlier in the week with her meal delivery so I'm assuming. I've only had this happen one other time (sadly with a Kate Spade beach bag that I still think about!) and I had to file a claim with the retailer and they open an investigation with UPS. I have the my choice delivery and I authorize delivery when I'm not home. I just called J.Crew and they were very nice - CS issued an immediate credit but they were sold out so they couldn't reorder. I'm taking it as a sign that I did not need another pair of sneakers and that I should also take a break on the orders!

  21. Gotta love how when there's a promo with free shipping or an extra % off sale there's nothing I want. Then magically like finding a unicorn the elusive pop-back of an item I missed appears. And yes I bought the unicorn because it was a third of the original price. As we all know when you see a unicorn you better snap it up.

The unicorn is G8968 the lambswool bomber jacket for $53 CDN originally $152. More of a sweater than a jacket. Guess I've started showing for fall before summer even hits.

  24. I posted elsewhere that I got both the pink and gold new balance. The 8.5 fits well,so for me they are actually true to size. I tried them on with cuffed skinny jeans and shorts and like them with both. I really, really dont need both but like both colors.

    1. I ordered the gold, and did have a passing thought for the pink. I think the gold is almost a neutral. I wear a 9.5 or 10 in shoes, and sometimes a 10.5 in running sneakers. I bought 9.5 and maybe could have gone with 9.0. But I'll stick with the 9.5 and wear socks or peds. I really , really didn't even need one pair, but I couldn't turn down gold sneakers.

      Delete
    2. I thought I'd prefer the gold but almost prefer the pink, which next to my skin tone is really neutral. I have a pale pink coat I always get complimented on and I can see wearing leather pants or black skinny jeans with the coat and the pink sneakers. I also thought of plenty of ways to wear the gold. Considering they fit well and are comfortable I should keep both.
