"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Not a vent. There was a nice update of the sale section today and I was able to order the Cameron bow stretch pants. I apparently had the last one as they are now sold out so hoping they ship. That makes a total of five orders (a blazer, a jacket, a pair of shoes, a tee and the pants) in 24 hours. Great promo!!

  2. Lucky duck! I’ve had my eye on those!
I picked up three popbacks in my size - the Drake popover, the silk tiger shirt and the collection shantung pants. Cross fingers the sizes work. Two orders in 24 hours for me.

    1. I'll be curious what you think of the collection shantung pants. I had been stalking them for a long time and finally bit when sale went 40% off last week. But I finally tried them on yesterday, and unfortunately they fit a bit weird. Not sure if it is me or the pants.
The inner label says they are "Marties" (which I wear and love), but they fit much, much looser than my Marties in the same size. And they looked quite different than how they are pictured on the website unfortunately. The fabric, however, is gorgeous -- I really hope they work out for you !

    2. They’re arriving today so I’ll find out soon! I sized up based on reviews and the fabric but hmm I am TTS in Marties. I’m usually not a fan of fabrics with a sheen but I saw someone on IG (beltwaybrunette maybe?) who had them in black and they looked so amazing on her that they went on my radar ever since.

  5. I checked around 6:15 AM est and there was not much left to speak of...I placed a few orders earlier this week so I am good. I also received a price adjustment on my order from the weekend so the tie waist cotton dress will net $19 and the keyhole dress $23. I said I'll only keep one navy dress (the tie waist or the belted knit dress) if they both work but for those prices...

    1. I tried the tie waist cotton dress and it was awful! I didn't like the fabric and it was huge (even after sizing down). But I'm short waisted, so the whole thing looked ridiculous. Hopefully you'll have better luck with it. Or just take the other one!

    2. Lauren - good to know, thanks. I ordered a small and a medium since it's always a toss up which size I'll take when dresses run S/M/L. If it doesn't work out then all the easier to return :)

    3. Anne, good luck with the tie waist cotton dress. I ordered the navy too in my usual size medium and the fit worked well. It’s not too fitted (buttocks and hips need some space ) and I can wear to the office. Wore it with tights and two tone loafers. The material is a stretchy cotton and I wasn’t expecting that. I can see sizing down because of the material.

    4. Tara, I looked it up on IG and it looked great on you. Sadly, the tie waist dress was a fail on me...a little too short and too boxy and even for $19, I couldn't make it work. The keyhole dress is cute - I bought a medium in the black and it is a bit big so reordered the small. I returned stuff at my store tonight - sale was still 30% off in store.

  6. 50% off sale + 15% off coupon has been a bonanza. Mostly shopped out of season for next winter. Lodge coat in speckled wool ($37 and Tall 8 is a perfect fit), wide leg wool pants ($25), waffle knit cashmere sweater ($38), feather crewneeck sweater in navy ($54). Picked up tartan plaid maxi skirt from holiday for my mom for $19 since she loves mine. Also, ordered some holiday gifts too. The striped cape scarf will make a nice present. J Crew is giving away tees, so ordered Love First, beach scene and perfect fit tee in green, navy and pink stripe.

    1. Wow, those are some amazing prices! I agree about J.Crew giving away tees, because I bought a bunch of tees recently too, including the Love First one.

  7. part of me wants to take advantage of the sales (plus the extra 15% off coupons i have) but, honestly, i'm annoyed. there's a lot of cute things i like, but i've had to return almost everything because of sizing or quality issues. :(

    1. Has anyone noticed the sizing issues have escalated in the past 18 months? At first I thought I was experiencing fluctuating weight gain that I was fitting anywhere from a 0/XS to M/6, but starting to see more posts from ppl saying they're ordering 2-3 sizes per item just because of size issues. From 1996 to about a few years ago, I was pretty consistent with my JC size.

    2. I have definitely noticed sizing issues even between same item, different color. My closest store closed about 3 years ago. It's really difficult to need to keep ordering and returning because one size small in a different color fits NOTHING like the small I already have.

    3. Same here eeps. I keep thinking I'm either losing or gaining tons of weight but then I wear my older stuff and it still fits the same so it has to be inconsistent fit. I too have about three sizes I fit into at J.Crew which is absurd and exhausting. I finally stopped buying pants at the crew altogether about a year ago because of it.

  8. I now see the infamous Factory dresses being sold as retail on the new arrivals page. Wanted to mention I received an email for a survey last weekend. I was exited to give feedback until I started the survey and realize most of it pertained to factory. It asked about which outlet stores I had shopped in past year, on line vs in stores etc. it had a lot of look at these 2 promos and say which one would entice you more. 30% entire store, % off by category, bogo’s etc. It also asked what was most important when purchasing at factory, getting a deal, quality, fabric choice, fitting my personal style etc. It did get to a point at the end where it was asking me to compare retail offerings to factory. I know many here don’t shop factory, I do but I am picky. Honestly In regards to quality it was hard for me to say retail was that much better than factory now a days( in some categories like shoes it is a big yes to retail over factory) Overall it was hard to say styles offered better at retail as well. I mean this week I purchased jeans and t shirts cheaper than factory on the retail site so it is hard to see why people would purchase at factory at this point. I did purchase recent items at factory because they are offering gingham and seersucker which to me is classic crew and lacking in retail right now. Both factory items were also 100% cotton which is also lacking at retail. It was interesting for sure. Wondering if anyone else received this survey.

    1. I haven't gotten the survey, but sometimes I actually prefer J.Crew Factory's offerings to the retail ones. Just as you said, I like 100% cotton, and it seems like JCF offers more dresses/skirts like that. I also find JCF's regular sizing to be a better fit for me, since I'm slightly between regular and petite.

    2. JessF, thanks for sharing the details of the survey! Like the multi-branding of the Factory dresses discussed yesterday, this is more evidence that J Crew is researching what to do with their sub brands. They seem to want data on how much cross-shopping customers are doing between brands, and why.

I could see a scenario in which Madewell and Factory emerge as the strongest and Retail, which has completely lost its way, remains a brand but merges into the other two channels.

    3. Hi ruffles - piggybacking on this, I wonder if they're trying to expand the Point Sur line as another option. It used to be just jeans, but now it's showing up in the seaside pants and in a couple of tops on the Instagram account from Brookfield Place. Now, the ruffle-sleeve eyelet dress (H7701) is showing as a Point Sur item (even though you can clearly see the black JC tag in the item pic). Talk about an identity crisis!

  10. I am finally done with J Crew. I placed an order in April. Three pairs of pants, none of them fit. Reordered two weeks ago. My return has not been received. My new order if they are even still available has not shipped. There is no way to track a PO return (and I live an hour away from the nearest UPS store). So I am not making a two-hour trip to return to UPS. So no pants. No return. I am closing my J Crew Credit Card. It's so broken at J Crew - it is beyond being fixed. So sad. I have been a loyal customer since the company started. I will shop somewhere else from now on. I feel like I'm at a funeral.
