  1. I found a lot to love in my boxes of summer clothes that I got out of storage last weekend. Summerweight chino bermuda shorts (from ’06), knit jersey dresses (anybody remember the convertible Sanur dress?), linen baseball tees, linen/cotton tunics and beach sweaters, lightweight jeans, Waverly chinos. I also unearthed an old city tote (white with tiny tennis rackets printed on it), madras espadrille wedges, and a navy/white clip dot strapless dress with navy tulle underlay (fabric looks identical to the navy clip dot midi from this week’s new arrivals).

I went to eBay/PM and got a white Factory shrunken fisherman sweater (100% cotton) and some Madewell wide-leg crop jeans (also 100% cotton, and NWT!) and I’m good to go for the season. I would’ve been happy to spend the money at JC, but the Point Sur cropped jeans felt like stretchy pajama jeans to me (and now are NOT made in LA, WTH) and the striped rollneck sweater was too short/shoulders too wide. So I also love that there’s a market for second-hand JC.

    1. Wow, it sounds like you uncovered great items! That’s always such a treat! Thank you for the reminder that I should do this too. I’m so focused on finding something new to buy but really I have too much already. I have some older knit dresses too from Jcrew (can’t remember the names) but they’re lovely and I wish they’d make some again. I remember the sanur dress that you mentioned.

    2. Hi jan! They did so many of those great jersey dresses for a few years - lots of styles, and the fabric draped so nicely.

I'm glad that I saved so many old summer pieces, probably because they're smaller they're easier to store. ; )

    3. Your post makes me sad that I got rid of so many items over the past few years. If I knew it would be so difficult to find suitable replacements I may have held on to more things. But there were valid reasons for getting rid of the items and I still have a bigger closet than needed filled with a lot of nice pieces. Plus I am saving money by not buying as much and shopping my closet. Oh and I do still have a Sanur dress!

    4. I've also been shopping my closet as I have so many nice pieces and nothing in the stores seems comparable.

    5. silver_lining, yes I love there is such a great market for secondhand JC! I wanted a JC denim pencil skirt recently from SP09, found one on eBay for $15. :)

    6. I loved the sanur dress! I had so many of the jersey dresses over the years and now I am down to my last one. I am in dire needs of new summer clothes, but I'm not finding anything I like.

    7. I've been shopping my closet lately, too -- linen perfect shirts, citi minis, schoolboys, no2 pencil skirts . . . I still have one pair of original minnies that I can barely squeeze into anymore but I refuse to give [them] up yet.

    8. This is me. I lived in Sanur and Beach dresses and I still have a couple! I don’t need as many summer clothes and I love my older J Crew. Cafe Capris and the silk-cotton blend Perfect Shirts in lovely prints. Sigh.

I think there is such a good resale market for older J Crew because 1) many of the pieces were modern and polished but classic, and still look great, unlike the trendy stuff today, and 2) the fabric and tailoring was high quality and the garments lasted years. There is little or nothing of recent production offered on the JCA Exchange now vs. years ago when there was a ton, because the quality is damn near “disposable” now.

    9. I have lots of "old" J Crew new or nwot on ebay and poshmark (schoolboys, tippis, leather goods, etc) and while I've sold a couple I find that a lot of buyers can't discern between "old" quality and the "new J. Crew" based on the questions I get. A couple of years ago, my J. Crew listings were flying off in a matter of hours though, so I think the brand has been diluted beyond repair. All your comments are making me reconsider selling these items even if they are now a bit snug, since I am so starved for quality!

    10. Anthro Blogger, good point that the brand in general is probably not quite as desirable or in demand as in the heyday. I’m sure you are right about your buyers - if they weren’t shopping at J Crew 7+ years ago, they would only know the quality level of recent years.

Hold on to those gems in your closet! I wish I hadn’t purged as much of the good stuff.

    11. and this is why when I read about the joys of a closet purge, I think “NOT ON A BET.”

    12. Usually I wouldn't encourage hoarding, but if you have the space I'd recommend holding on to old JC if the pieces are in good shape. I haven't missed the trendier things I've gotten rid of, but am glad I kept leather bags, superfine cotton suiting, non-blend sweaters, non-poly blend denim, and wool coats (okay, those take up some space).
