J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. some new arrivals up today. I didn't realise point sur was a new 'line.' Some of the pieces don't feel very jcrew to me, more like madewell; I also don't like the mercantile florals, or seeing mercantile merchandise on the website. If I wanted to shop mercantile, or madewell, I would go to their websites. The mercantile florals also feel very un-jcrew, and look a little cheap. I do like a few things from point sur, I could see myself wearing the seaside shorts, but I don't need more casual weekend clothing for summer, I need workwear, and I want workwear that I'm excited about. Pretty but office appropriate dresses in linen and cotton, fresh prints, cap sleeves, short sleeves, defined waist at actual waist height (not my ribs), knee length, pockets. There are a million stores where I could buy some flowy shapeless bohemian print top, I come to jcrew for tailored pieces in beautiful colors and prints that I can wear for my actual life, which unfortunately does not involve hanging out at a beach house wrapped in a striped shawl. Nothing against striped shawls.

    1. The poly and rayon Mercantile dresses are all showing up now in the Factory “new arrivals.” Agree they do NOT look J Crew-like.

A couple days ago, silver_lining observed that Point Sur is getting a lot of attention at J Crew and is starting to seem like a sub brand.

    2. Okay I was wondering what Point Sur and Mercantile were? It just seemed off for J Crew. So what exactly is J Crew doing with them on their website now?

    3. Hi Lolamd - Point Sur is a 4-year old JC venture into pricey ($200+), "premuim" (mainly 100% cotton), made in LA jeans. I guess they don't have a problem diluting that brand, too.

    4. (applause, applause, applause)

Also, I don't want a striped shawl. I like flowy shapeless bohemian, but JCrew just doesn't do that well yet.

My theory on the short sleeve shortage is that it is difficult to make sleeve openings that flatter many different bicep sizes. People are always complaining that an armhole is too big or small. Why is this a problem now but not throughout history though?

Mercantile and Madewell are just confusing the Jcrew brand and complicating things.

    5. @silver lining thanks for the link. I didn't know that that was the intention behind Point Sur, even after reading the product descriptions.

  2. I received the liberty magical bouquet shirt. I sized up (per frequent reviews that liberty tends to run small) and love it! The colors are gorgeous and it’s draped without being oversized. Will get lots of wear out of this (white denim, light denim, patterned skirt - so many possibilities).

    1. I keep looking at that beautiful top and reminding myself that I look like death in yellow. I’m glad others are able to make it work because it’s gorgeous.

The Liberty D'Anjo floral perfect shirt is finally eligible for promos so I ordered it this morning with the 30% promo plus an additional 15% off card. I also reordered the sleeveless tank in Liberty symphony floral in my usual size. I ordered it one size up before but I don’t like the way it fits. It gaps a bit under the arms and hangs shapelessly. I’m hoping the smaller size is more fitted without being too tight.

    2. i noticed the liberty shirt in my cart is now eligible for the promo but the other stuff in my cart that was eligible yesterday isn't today. grrrr... i don't really need it anyway so their loss

  3. The only thing I like from the new roll out is the ruched sleeve top in sparkle floral, not sure about the sparkle, or the fact that it is poly, but it was the only top that caught my eye. What I would like to see for summer at J Crew: linen or light weight cotton pullovers and cardigans, some cotton/silk cap sleeve tops for work, or even a casual printed tee that does NOT have text on it.

    1. Same here about the ruched top. I'm not super crazy about it but maybe it is better in person? I would love to see some on point summery colors that aren't so basic.

    1. Yes! Everything says it’s sold out and that’s if I can get the page to load.

  5. bythelake - Agreed! No more word tees. Remember all of the cute tees J Crew used to have? I miss the beautiful printed sweaters, the linen Tippis and cardigans. The Jackies work great for me but looking for a little variety.

    1. Agree with you both. Remember the Tippi Linen sweater navy with the green whales? Beautiful design, great quality. No more interesting prints period. Jcrew is at its lowest ebb I'm thinking now. They better kick out something more old style radical Jcrew sooner than later.

    2. I would love to see some linen or cotton pullovers in either a crewneck or V-neck as well as some long cardigans. Some of my ancient J.Crew sweaters are starting to look a little rough and there is nothing to replace them with.

  7. More Mercantile dresses in the rollout...it would seem they're trying to distinguish this as it's own brand but unfortunately people are thinking Mercantile = Factory. The prints are just ok, and they are much more casual. I have my eye on that French floral one but for a much lower price.

I was happy to see the cotton Parke blazer suiting but as others have mentioned...where are the pretty prints? (I know we've had Liberty but I miss the old prints)I also was excited to finally see the button fly shorts that have been in some product shots...but again, I'll wait for sale.

I did pick up the tie waist glen plaid pants in the sale section this morning as well as the nautical stripe t-shirt dress. Hoping for an extra % of so I can get a PA but prices were decent as is.

    1. The more I think about this, it's kind of like how Madewell had a bunch of these (Wallace, Hi-Line, Broadway & Broome, etc.) - are they considered "sub-brands"?

I don't know how well this is going to work for them. Madewell came out of the gate with those lines established (I remember getting a Hi-Line tee from them in their first year) but you're right Anne, people associate the Mercantile name with Factory (and lower quality). My Factory B&M has a Mercantile sign out front. Point Sur used to mean made in LA (higher quality). Now they're just throwing these labels on any items. It's bizarre.

    2. I thought some folks here had problems getting PAs for sales items? That they were starting to enforce the PAs for FP items only policy? That's what's been keeping me from buying sales items without promos lately.

I stopped by Brookfield for a return last night. A few items that aren't in the online rollout: the pink medallion print midi skirt (elastic back, pockets, lined) and a summer dress in the same print (buttons down the front, straps), black/white floral silk jacket (has lapels like a blazer, but tie-front closure - no buttoms), a beautiful blue foulard-type print sheath dress for work, more tees (New York tee - white with small names of NY streets in raised lettering all over). The Mercantile dresses were promptly displayed, as were the white Point Sur summer dress. I was not impressed or interested in anything. I liked how the pink medallion skirt/dress photographed online, but in person the print doesn't read "medallion" as much as "loud neon" - I think the print reads better far away or on a smaller scale (a shirt rather than a midi skirt). It is however, cotton. Didn't love the plastic buttons on the front of the dress. Overall just very boring. I am disappointed that the prints are all on Mercantile stuff (the fabric did not feel nice) and not mainline JC.

    3. I've had more success than not with PAs so figured it's worth a shot.

  8. I stopped at Madewell a few days ago to look at the totes. I saw a couple that I really like. Do they ever go on sale? Does Madewell ever offer promos? I can’t buy without a discount!

    1. Madewell sometimes has 20% or 30% off promos on full price or when you spend a certain amount, but bags are often excluded (at least leather ones). Some do hit sale, but often sell out fast once they do.

    2. bythelake - Thanks. I was afraid of that.

    3. Hi Jeanne - I got my Transport Tote a couple of years ago from Shopbop when they were having a 25% off sale. The Madewell bags weren't excluded there, even though they're almost always excluded on their own site.

    4. if you have a Nordstrom Rack near you, I have seen Madewell totes there on a fairly regular basis. Worth checking out if it's not out of the way for you.

    5. Been waiting for a % off promo. My Madewell cart is full of stuff.

    6. also got my transport tote years ago on Shopbop! They don't monogram, if that's important to you, but I think you might be able to go to a Madewell store and request it... -lep33shops

    7. Nordstrom retail will also put them on sale periodically.

  10. Factory - Item J2216 - Very cherry collector T-shirt
I rarely ever shop at Factory, but I thought this tee would be really cute. It runs a bit large, but the fabric is substantial/sturdy. It's also clearly red on navy not red on navy that looks black. I bought it when it was first released for $19.50 plus free shipping. It looks pretty much as it does on my monitor. The cherries aren't too big or too small.

    1. I recently got this t-shirt too and hope to wear it this week. I agree that the navy is clearly navy, which I appreciate and that the sizing of the cherries is just right. I think it is very cute and want to pair it with navy and white stripe shorts I have. Sizing: I have a few factory tees and my usual size worked for me.

  11. On a positive note, I got the rugby dress yesterday and absolutely love it. The fabric is great, the fit is right on (although slightly large), and I can't wait to wear it for years. Of course, now I want the dress in each color and the tops as well.

    1. Totally agree. I got the black and tan and wore it yesterday with my Adidas. I love the black and tan option as most rugbys include a navy stripe.

    2. I did get the pink/Navy rugby shirt.... although I love the dress I don’t think I have anywhere to wear it.... enjoy ladies!!

Seems to be daily promo... so hoping for better deals tomorrow..lol.... been watching the silk Blythe shirts in pink and grey.... but not willing to pay so much!!!

  12. I'm sure bells and whistles went off the other day when I made an order after like 6 months of not ordering a thing. Don't see much I like, don't even know what this Mercantile thing is about but it seems like it's just more cheap crap....sad. Not much looks like J. Crew anymore. How about this....I saw some earrings I HAD to have. Can't find them anywhere on the site or anywhere on the web. So I call my local store thinking they might know, recognize them, etc. Got the (BS) response that they were sold out. Knowing this was BS because I've heard that line before, I figured there was a big chance they were yet to be launched. Sure enough, the very next morning there they were and "on sale" already! It's good to know how the Crew operates. So I bought 3 pairs of earrings and the long sleeved striped dress in black/white as a pop up return. I have the full length version in navy/white and I love it. I hope to see more J. Crew like things for the summer!
