J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    1. Yeah I saw that 😃. Any reviews on the JC factory school-boy blazer? The material is wool-poly which makes me skeptical. Anyone here has anything nice to say about the fit? Thanks.

    2. And coming soon to J Crew...how about ruffle fur underpants that tie at the hips?

    3. 😂 too funny, too accurate

    4. Mmmm, no. But I do kind of like the sherpa eyeglass case.

    5. I have last years plaid blazer from factory. I like it. I took the larger of my two sizes and it is comparable in fit to the retail schoolboys I have in my smaller blazer size.

    6. Good to know, thanks Laura! I might have to try it on in-store since I always have a problem with the arm length.

    7. I really like the Factory schoolboy blazers - very glad they still offer this cut/style there. I got the "deep jade" a month or so ago and like it very much. Took my usual schoolboy size

  2. If anyone is looking, I am not using my Factory (and Mercantile) one-time use code. Valid 10/23-11/1/2017. You are welcome to it... OTBSKESSG

    Good luck with your finds!

    1. Looks like this has been used. If anyone else has a factory code they are not using I would appreciate if. You can email me at jessfritch at hotmail dot com. TIA.

  3. Anyone with a 30% off code. Can you email it to me at maqsadshop at gmail dot com

    TIA!

    1. I think the 30% off codes expired on the 23rd. I see there is 25% off plus free shipping on JCrew's site and Ebates is offering 5% cash back.

  4. schoolboys at Factory looked nice but I have not tried them this year

  5. Styling the Parke velvet blazer in Cabernet and cluster earrings on the blog today. Blazer runs TTS. Had to stalk the website for restocks, but it’s slowly happening. Also bought the rose, but I might exchange it for the Zinnia.

  6. I went into the store this weekend and noticed they had sale sections according to price, ie 19.99 and under, 29.99 and under, etc. Here is the problem, with no additional discount a customer is to assume the price is the price. Well here is the kicker, the prices on the items were not accurate, they were higher than the website's sale prices. So there are thousands of items on sale and at any given moment the staff has to go around with a price sticker gun and put the correct prices on items. Some of the 129.99 and under dresses should've been in the 69.99 and under section- so please JCrew this isn't working AND it takes the fun out of the hunt. Also I hit a madewell store and they had 30% off "all sale" but one sale item I brought up had a red line through the price and the SA said "oh this can't be in the 30% off because it is a 'kill' price." Don't have a clue what they are doing but I don't think they do either.

  7. Wearing the new cat print Tippi today - pic on IG @poettodesign. It is exactly what you would expect from a Tippi in terms of fit, sleeve length (bracelet), weight etc. I do not find it see-through, the print prevents that (though I don't think I'd wear a neon-pink bra underneath lol). The base colour is cream, the spots black. Pretty much exactly as pictured on the website!

  8. I stopped in last week and tried on some new arrivals. Some hits, some misses - try-ons include the striped turtleneck sweater dress, Cameron bow stretch chinos, tiered bell sleeve crepe top, peplum sleeve v-neck sweater, high rise toothpicks in Prescott wash (love!), tres chic tee, embellished cable sweater, convertible sweater cape, velvet front Harlow cardigan, and paisley floral dress. I'm missing good prints and 100% wool!

You can see photos and reviews on my blog here

    1. Love the jeans! I missed them in the rollout.

    2. I like the bell sleeve top too. If they have in my store I will try today. Curious about the red also. Too bad about the embellished sweater. The arm and body length make it feel skimpy. Too boxy. I don't think it will work for me either. Those were the two things I liked so glad to see them on you.

    3. I loved that bell-sleeve top too in black, but staying away due to the poly-blend. Will wait for reviews and might sale stalk.

    4. Thanks for the reviews! I'm a fan of striped turtleneck dress and tres chic tee too. Bought both and agree with you about fabric decision on the dress.

    5. I'm glad you got the striped turtleneck dress. I hope to try the convertible sweater cape soon because I love a good poncho and wear them often.

    6. @Shopping Celle Happy with the purchase & hope the poncho works for you!

  10. I'm styling the mens-y tiger cardi, buttoned and tucked into my scalloped skirt in wool-cotton gabardine (with a silk cami under the cardi because low V!). I look like a chic legal librarian (and thats not my profession) First time wearing the cardi, and the cuffs are starting to stretch so you can see the white unprinted fabric under the print. I am not amused.

  11. I ordered two sale popbacks last week: the camo Tippi and the silk pajama shirt in foulard print. They're alright - the pajama shirt has a great print but is cut super narrow in the upper back/shoulders (I sized up to an 8 from a 4) and the Tippi is cute and I like the colors, but I probably wouldn't wear it more than once or twice because it's not totally my taste.

Here's the thing: if I got an extra % off the sale price I probably would've kept both of them (was hoping for a % off during the "4 days" promo so I could get a PA). But since I didn't, they weren't worth it to me and I returned them. That sale section is really stagnant (hovering between 1100-1300) and I bet an extra % would probably give shoppers a little nudge. They're cutting it pretty close to holiday rollouts and still have a ton of summer to unload. I see what they're doing now - offering promos on the full-price stuff to keep it from ending up in the sale section - but what about getting rid of the things that are already there?

It's so difficult to change customers' habits - we've been seeing an extra % off sale for years! Not to mention that JCA's have mentioned never paying FP because of how quickly things go to markdown. This may be different if the items were amazing, but have you seen the reviews of this year's Chateau Parka (search by most recent)? Ouch!

    1. Meanwhile, Banana Republic is offering 50% off sale . . . It is a total mystery to me how J Crew thinks they are going to unload all of that old merchandise without an additional percentage off. Either "kill" price it or send it to the Factory stores but get it out of the retail stores. It looks terrible!

    2. Yes, the reviews of this year's Chateau parka are awful! I'm still a bit bummed I missed it when it was a new release. Thinking I might try the Factory version.. (Vail parka), they have that pretty dark green this year, hmm.

      Delete
    3. That is so sad about the Chateau Parka. One of my favorites of the last few seasons - I adore my original gray one.

They have to stop calling a familiar favorite from seasons past by the same name as shoddy new versions - it erodes customer trust badly.

    4. This is the first year I've liked the Chateau Parka (black one, but I haven't worn it yet). I don't know if I agree with the reviews. I disagree that it runs TTS/a bit large. I had to go up a size for the first time in a J. Crew winter coat (the others I have all still fit). It was snug in the arms/shoulders on me. I like the fur on the hood better - the old version overwhelmed my head. I like the browner fur on the hood - looks better on me than the old grayer fur. They may have dropped the wool content a bit, but it is still much nicer than any coat I've tried on at Factory in recent years.

    5. Hi cate! Thanks for your review. I think that most of the poor reviews are from Chateau lovers looking to replace an older model or add a new color and are disappointed in the comparison. This seems to be where JC gets itself into trouble; by making big changes to fabric, design, or construction but keeping the same name.

      Delete
    6. silver_lining, I totally understand. I don't like what they've done to the Cocoon coat this year, same problem! But I didn't like the Chateau originally, so (some) changes don't bother me. Downgrading the fabric is always a bad change though, and J. Crew seems to be doing that across the board.

    7. I hear you - I've never been crazy about the Cocoon so the more changes they make to it, the more I'd probably like it. ; )

JC's lucky to have a group of long-time fans/historians (Nobody's discussing Gap's old seasons in a blog, ha!) but this hurts them sometimes, especially when changing favorites or doing these "throwback" releases - it was interesting to read reviews from people that had the original rollneck sweaters and rugby shirts!

  12. Anyone seen any mustard colored skinny cargos in size 29? I have some and there is a mystery bleach looking stain. It is not too noticebale but would prefer a pair without it. Let me know, thanks

  13. I ordered a 0P popback on the silk tiger pants. I don't think they're my size, but with free shipping I don't mind trying. Also don't mind no addtl discount since this is a popback. But normally with an addtl discount I would have bought a whole lot more.

  14. Question for everyone - What's going on with popbacks these days? I haven't shopped JC in a while, but popbacks used to update once in the morning, but I've noticed now they update repeatedly throughout the day (and sometimes the items aren't even in stock). Very confusing.

    1. The popbacks depend on how much and how often the stores send back returned items.

  15. I’ll start by saying that it’s been a while since I shopped Talbots, but I received their November catalog yesterday - a real catalog, not a “mailer” - and I had to keep checking the cover to confirm that I wasn’t seeing beloved old school J Crew!

Pretty alpine-inspired styles, Sperry boots, colorful cords, blazers (one w ruffled placket that looks like Fiona of yore), bright cashmere cable and merino knits, work dresses and updated LBDs.

    1. Was thinking the exact same thing. I loved the clothes and did remind me of the old J Crew. And guess what, very few ruffles and no sleeveless shirts for winter!

    2. My mailman delivered the Talbots catalog while I was talking with my 63 year old neighbor (I'm 60). We stood in the street and looked through the pages oohing and aweing over the cute clothes! Love the alpine inspired looks! Very old school Crew looking and very fall/winter appropriate. It makes me laugh when I see those "cold" shoulder sweaters and tops now....yah, cold shoulder indeed! I'm stopping in Talbots today to check out the clothes in person.

  16. Received the Teddy Coat this week and love it. Well made, but size down. I’m usually a medium but bought a small and was glad I did

  17. Received the daisy lace dress - it is delicious!!! My petite size was sold out so I went one size down in regular. It's a tad long for my taste, and tailoring would be expensive, so I am pondering whether to keep it (it's still in stock, at the price I paid).

The 2003 silk tanks are darling - love the v necks, so flattering for the short-necked. At $54 a pop though.

The director pencil skirt is just darling. On me, they hit just below the knee. Flattering and elegant. I've been pairing it with the Aubrey jacket from 2009 and 2010. I wish I had bought more of the Aubrey when it came out - the shorter length flatters my short length. If anyone has an Aubrey in navy or grey lying around, petite 00, I'd be happy to buy it off of you! J.Crew doesn't seem like it will be making any short suiting jacket anytime soon (the tailored blazer was a massive fail for me). florapower9@gmail.com

  18. Lately I have been shopping the stores and found them relatively empty. I will say the Durham JCrew store has the most amazing SA's. I cannot tell you the number of items I have actually purchased there just because they were so willing to take the time and assist me. I did ask them quite about the crazy sale changes and in a very scripted version told me the company was moving away from that. I asked him if they honored the student teacher on top of the sale and he said their particular store does so that was great as I shopped away. I did complete the online registration form to verify my teacher ID on jcrew this month to receive another 15% off and I did use that code online. I am wondering if JCrew is piloting a program to have us verified online so we can use our discount there too as they offer up promotions. Who knows. I did just snag that pretty pink fur coat from the factory, whose retail version soldout last year. I got to try it on at the store and loved it. Got it for around $110 during their 50% off sale and guess what it is marked at today??? $219. Go figure. I guess we are all treasure hunters. We will band together and continue this hunt!!!
