JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I’m going to wear the Iridescent Sequin Dress C9237 from Fall 2015 to a late afternoon church wedding and evening cocktail reception next week. I’d love some suggestions for what to wear over it for the church ceremony. I’ll be wearing gold peep-toe heels. You can see the dress on Gigi here:

    1. Hmmm...my first thought is a wrap of some kind. Something faux fur might be chic if you're in a cooler weather area. My other thought is a merino or cashmere cardigan. Maybe ivory if that works with your skin tone, or an olive color for that tone on tone look. You could even go retro and just wear it over your shoulders with the top button closed, or wear it as a cardigan, depends on your shape. I'm sure other colors would work with the olive color (red, black, magenta, etc) but with the gold shoes you may want to have less contrast.

    2. Thanks, Suz! I’m definitely dealing with cool weather, best case is a high of 60 that day. I tried a few cardis this morning and I don’t have a green that works. I also tried my existing sweater coats and while I liked the length I wasn’t feeling the mix of textures. I can always wear a black cashmere cardi if all else fails. My top contenders so far:

      1) Black velvet button up topper (more cardi than jacket), fitted, waist length.
      2) I happened by Lucky Brand this morning and snagged this beautiful suede jacket. I wasn’t buying it with the dress in mind, but tried it on when I got home and it just might work. The weight of the suede is a nice contrast to the sequins, and the length looks great with the dress. I’d probably switch to the taupe suede shoes I got at BR yesterday (they’re much lighter than the jacket, not matchy-matchy)

    3. I'm not feeling the jacket for the event, but I know that mix of more causal and dressy is in, without seeing the colors together I'm not sure. If yOu do the black cardi or velvet, can you switch to black shoes? The gold or taupe might be fine though either way.

    4. This is one of those rare times when I wish I was on Insta or some other visual medium as I’d love to be able to post a photo to hear JCAs' opinions. Yes, the colours of the dress and jacket together are what’s stopping me, but as they’re both earthy (can sequins be earthy?) I think it might work. I should probably set the scene a bit to explain my idea. The bride and groom are best described as free-spirited outdoor adventurers. I’m quite surprised that they’re having a church wedding as kayaking to some remote island and having us hike up to a clifftop would be more their style (they probably just couldn’t come up with enough kayaks). Needless to say, it’s not going to be a formal event and my dress is probably way over the top, but since I already own it and rarely get a chance to dress up, carpe diem! So that’s why I think the leather might work to tone down the flashy dress. Not sure yet, will have to try on again.

    6. Would a mustard/yellow cardigan work? For some reason I like that color combo with the dress color, if it would work with your shoes.

    7. @cate thanks for this! As I love yellow with olive green I don’t know why I didn’t think of this myself. I went through my options as I have several yellow cardis but unfortunately none are the right cut/style to flatter the dress. I’ll do another deep dive today and see if there are any options I’ve missed.

  2. Hi shopgrrrl - what a pretty dress! I would probably wear some kind of long sweater-coat over it...then depending on the weather, you may not even need a coat. Did you see that they recently released the open-front sweater-blazer (G7746) in "heather cilantro"? It may work for a tonal look depending on your taste (I can never have enough green!). Interested to hear what other JCA's have to say.

And I mentioned it on her Insta recently, but Gigi's blog is a treasure trove of reviews. I used it the other day to reference a 4-year old review before making an eBay purchase! Love ya, G. <3

    1. Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn’t seen the new sweater blazer color yet. I love it! Not sure if the green on green would work but it’s something to think about.

And yes, big shoutout to fabulous Gigi for her many great reviews! I couldn’t remember the name or style number of the dress, but when I googled Jcrew sequin dress green, there she was! Thank you, Gigi!
