"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Not a vent. Anyone visited the concept store in Manhattan or Jersey, and have pics of next week's roll-out?

    1. Not yet, have been thinking about trying to get down there this week but it's kind of an out of the way place in Manhattan. Is this going to be the first fall roll out? If so maybe worth a trip....unless avillasb can get her VPS to send sneak peak pics?

      Delete
    2. next week's rollout is pre-fall. from the few photos I saw floating around on Instagram, looks like some summery items still and transitional items. There's no paper style guide so I'm curious if there's a digital version, if we'll see Pinterest photos, etc. First official Fall 2017 rollout is in mid-August per the staff at my local store.

      Delete
    3. If I can get down to the store I will let everyone know and post pics on IG. It's super inconvenient unless you work downtown--once you get off the subway, you basically have to walk through one mall (the new Oculus) and a NJ Transit Path station to get to the mall where the JC is.

      Delete
    4. If you are talking about the Garden State Plaza store----I was there today nothing remotely fall or new rollout. In fact it's rather nothing like it used to be. the NB stuff is languishing in the corner, and sale is 50% and the same old that has been around for a while. as before they need to stop with FS on sale to get it moving.
I go to the Factory store in Paramus often and that place is jumping and turns over quickly

  2. The newest picture on the main page of the website still shows someone with the ties falling off her shoulders. If she can't keep the straps up, how will the rest of us fare!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think you're being a bit much. It's just an ad. The ties on all the tops I've tried are fine.

      Delete
    2. I think the point is aren't the photos supposed to make us want to buy the clothes? If it looks sloppy it is not very enticing. At least not to me.

      Delete
    3. TeriLynn, yes! The discussion among JCAs on a prior thread summed it up: the outfit and pose on the website landing page is juvenile and not aspirational to anyone over the age of 12.

      Delete
    4. I think she looks carefree and cute. I am not into all their poses, especially ones that distort the fit, but I don't think this particular photo looks juvenile. I think you're taking a legitimate point and running with it.

      Delete
    5. I went back to that thread, because I commented and I clearly wasn't paying much attention. I was speaking more to the general cut and style of the actual clothes. Many pieces recently look juvenile. IMO it's not the pose that make them so. That silk tie-shoulder peplum top from a couple months ago, reminded me of something a middle school kid might wear to a dance. And I can't with all the rainbow things.

      Delete
    6. I noticed the tie falling off because the prior front page photo also had the tie falling off (otherwise I would have shrugged). If they're trying to make it look sexy, it doesn't. It just highlights the impracticality of the clothes.

  3. I don't understand why the model photos for the button-front top in rainbow gingham show the print running diagonally, but the product photo in my cart shows the gingham stripes running straight up and down. Those are two totally different garments! Can anyone comment on what this top actually looks like in real life? I don't live near a store. I know I shouldn't be surprised by this level of sloppiness anymore, but given how much trouble they're in, you'd think they would be paying attention to things like this. Thanks.

    1. @Dianne, I remembered that Ina had reviewed this item on her Insta (inawonderland5) so i looked it up and the stripes on her top are definitely diagonal!

I'm going to a store at lunch for a pick-up and if I see the item, I will double check to be sure.

      Delete
    2. Can confirm that the stripes are diagonal!! They fan out from the center, diagonally. HTH!

      Delete
    3. Thank you @TM93! Deepens the mystery even more.

    4. UPDATE: the image photo in my shopping bag is different! Now the item has the gingham running diagonally as shown on the model. Perhaps someone is following the blog?...

    5. Dun, dun, DUN! Zee plot thickens! ;-)

      (That is really curious though!)

    6. JCrew should def read this blog and someone there probably does. However, you'd think they'd take some of our suggestions for improvement as the opinions on here are invaluable. :)

  4. Not a vent - there are several new markdowns in the sale section including the strapless cross front top down to $40 before extra % off, poppy and daisy Liberty floral blazer, mint and pink tulle skirt and the chambray tie waist top.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thanks for the heads-up. I emailed for a price adjustment on the tie front chambray top (ordered after I saw it in your blog) yesterday from full price to 30% off, and now it has gone to sale already. And it hasn't even been delivered yet :O Cuts like this don't make sense to me. There are only two sizes remaining in tall...

      Delete
    2. I've been watching the chambray tie waist top in tall for several weeks. I have yet to see that top offered in the full range of tall sizes, and I check the website almost every day. Actually, many pants and tops have not been offered in a full range of tall sizes for several months. Sometimes the item is part of new arrivals and the tall sizes appear several days later, or there just aren't that many. The eyelet dress until recently was only offered in white for tall people. Recently the blue and green appeared. I have no idea what's going on. I do know that a lot of tall cropped pants are bought by shorter people looking for a longer length.

  5. I just can't be the ONLY person in America getting an error message EVERYTIME I click on an item... It must be a sign that I am not supposed to buy anything

    1. On the bright side, I did see that there are more colors in the Signet bag on sale. Nice touch JC! Hopefully, this means that there will be some new styles for the fall.

  6. Not a vent...more like a personal failing. This ship to store option is making me more impulsive :p.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I feel you; for me it's free shipping.

Having said that today I ordered a couple of tees and paid for shipping. It's like I lack impulse control.

      Delete
    2. +1 The only thing that stopped me from ordering some shoes that popped back in my size today was the lack of free shipping.

  7. Total vent. Ordered 3 items. One came with a 3 inch snag (cashmere), second, jackie cardigan, came unbuttoned and covered in thread, all three items came rolled in a ball into a clear plastic bag. I don't even know what to say. Called CS, the apologized once, didn't offer to order a replacement and that was that.

    3. There's pieces to pick and choose from. Like the some sweaters, and eyelet top (very Chloe & MIUMIU...)

Now where's J.Crew's fall style guide?!?

    4. I live in Southeast Texas so summer hasn't even reached its peak yet, but I am looking forward to see what the fall clothing styles will be this year.

    5. Even though it's blazing hot I still like to look ahead towards fall. Of course I would need a closer look on some of these pieces because of the way they are styled but a few things caught my eye: The mustard color boucle coat in the image 4, The gray furry cardigan and image 7, The plaid coat and ivory turtleneck with stripes in image 8, The Langford wide leg crop pants in image 10, the sweater dress and coat in image 14 and the shearling coat in image 18.

    3. Thanks! I stopped in and picked up the Liberty poppy/daisy blazer for $67.50! I guess to make this a "vent" I will note that they did not let me use my 15% off your next in-store purchase card with the 50% off sale, but it's still a good deal!

  10. Nordstrom Anniversary Sale catalog arrived today. One page devoted to J Crew: Houndstooth Regent, Pardon My French Tee, square scarf and Toothpicks. Kind of blah, safe picks.

One thing I noticed is the variety of other styles featured: there are OTS and ruffled options, but lots of sleeve styles, skirt lengths, jackets, shoes, boots, and dressy/ athletic/casual pieces. There are multiple trends plus some modern classics represented - they haven't gone completely overboard with one style like J Crew does. Plus, there are luxe fabrics: leathers, suede, wool, tartan, and a bit of tulle and satin.

Since so much of my wardrobe is J Crew, I sometimes forget that there is a whole big world of options out there, especially when I get bored w the current stuff.

    1. FYI- those JC items are exclusive to Nordstrom. I called Nordstrom and asked.

  11. This is off topic but someone was asking about % off sale at Madewell so I called my store to see what is going on. Their is no promotion currently but she said they are gearing up for a sale next week. Of course, she couldn't tell me what that sale would be but she seemed to imply it would be on sale items to make way for new arrivals. I guess Madewell must be doing pretty well but the lack of promotions (and shorter return period) has cut down on my purchases. They had a huge update on their sale section this morning...over 800 items.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes, a bunch of new items hit sale today -- I noticed that this morning as well, and grabbed a few items before they sold out. thank you for the update! hoping the promo is a good one ... fingers crossed ...

      Delete
    2. At least they have free shipping and free returns!

      Delete
    3. I rarely buy from Madewell because the lack of promos but what I do buy I really like. I only buy one or 2 pieces a month.

      Delete
    4. American Observer, yes the free shipping and returns are nice! I do really like the things I purchase from their but I think maybe my interest isn't piqued when their is no promo. I live over an hour from a store so it's not like I go there often and browse around. I need something to get me to the website (or store) to buy.

      Delete
    5. Lauren- Yes, I get it. I either buy full price and then it goes on sale or I wait till it goes on sale and then miss getting an item I really want. Double-edged sword!

      Delete
  12. UGH. Similar experiences to Anthro Blogger: Last week, the gingham ikat popover came from the warehouse (as eveidenced by the tracking number) with some pristine items, but it was crumpled into a rectangular plastic bag, no sticker on outside, seemed to have been worn--returned. (UPSIDE: bought one from sale section at a B&M for $20 this past weekend).

Separate shipment: Clipdot sleeveless top -- again from warehouse: had deodorant marks on it -- returned in store. Didn't even think to ask for replacement, was so disgusted.

Today, a cashmere cardigan showed up (shipped separately from the five other pieces I ordered) and there was a sipping straw wrapper in the bag! It's a great price, but, gross, I don't think I can get past this....

    Sigh.

  13. Maxi skirt arrived in plastic bag with tags removed, had to be returned, I looked like I was peeping out of a badly setup tent. Decided I am unlikely to grow 6" taller. SA said she couldn't take tent back without tags. Discussion ensued. But really, why do they send stuff out like this in the first place?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have had this situation before. The fact that an item has no tags is not my fault. in this type of situation I call or go to the store...so they know I have had no time (literally)
      could have worn it.

      Delete
    2. They should be able to take it back, as long as you have the bag it came in. That has the same info on it- SKU, etc.

      Delete
    3. I'm hoping your issue was resolved after the discussion because that is really frustrating. Last week I received an item that I didn't even realize didn't have a tag until I went to return it (same day I received it from the store). I was prepared to explain that that's how I received it, but the S.A. didn't say a word, just typed in numbers from the item's tag. So they can and do take these things back.

      Delete
    4. Yes, thanks, the return was accepted as a "one time courtesy."

I've had a lot of things arrive in unmarked plastic bags, or without packing slips. I just print out the email that has the shipping info. I've never had a problem. This particular store has all new staff, and they don't seem at ease in their work.

Meanwhile, I bought a black cotton blazer with leather trim at RL and a "Chanel-ish" tweedy knot Missoni jacket at Saks - great sales! and not a ruffle or pompon or tassel on either piece. Hehehe.

      Delete
    5. Your new goodies from RL & Saks sounds great. I've never had to return anything but have gotten plenty of pieces without tags or in plain clear plastic bags. You would think if it ships from a store they would at least attach a handwritten hang tag before it ships out.

      Delete
  14. yup...sale section up today...but my vent is I want nothing. whats wrong with me...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Not entirely a vent: Madewell has sent out a pre-fall sneak peek. You have to call in order to find out prices and to pre-order. I personally think it's a bad idea because it doesn't allow you to really SEE the clothes.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I thought this was pretty funny because the way the pieces are styled, you can't get a good look at some of them. "Yeah, I'd like to order the coat from Look 4 that's tied around the model's waist"? Ha!

      Delete
    2. I think it is something they have success with, though, because I have been getting those preview emails now for about two years and they keep doing them every season. I have never purchased anything from those preview emails, but they do pique my interest.

  17. Well, I got the tennis t-shirt. I'm not going to lie, I thought it was slightly cheesey with the ringer neckline and the "match point" on the sleeve (as shown on the model). It arrived in the mail today and I thought something seemed off... no ringer neckline or match point. So, I'm happy but seriously... get it together J. Crew!

  18. Some bad news for the 'Crew: a few weeks ago, I'd posted an article about how there was some relief in sight. However, I just recently read that apparently that relief deal fell thru:

In June J. Crew announced it had wrangled some relief with a plan agreed to by most of its creditors, to swap out some of its $566.5 million debt that matures in 2019 for equity and new bonds that don’t mature until 2021. That plan, however, stalled after two lenders sued over a stipulation that lenders dismiss litigation relating to the assignment of J. Crew’s intellectual property rights, which the retailer late last year attempted to shield by transferring them to an unrestricted Cayman Islands subsidiary.

  19. OT, I stopped into Nordstrom today, and while I'm not a cardholder I snooped and spotted the J. Crew rack for the annual sale! Couldn't snap a pic or see the backside of the rack, I spotted an olive green cardi with grosgrain trim and gold buttons (pretty sure it's the Harlow), a wool-looking Jackie shell/cardigan twinset with a gray background and bright violet/navy argyle pattern, a short gray boucle blazer with wide navy piping along the lapels and pockets, a couple of poplin-ish tanks with flutter cap sleeves (looked spring/summer-ish, in coral and I think white), a blue poplin-ish shirt with contrasting white shirt cuffs, that houndstooth blazer as featured in the catalog, which in person had a lighter pallete than the pic, with beige background seeming more prominent than the darker colors.

  21. The regularly scheduled pricing hassle... Two days ago I bought a top in store at regular price. If I had wanted the online price of 30% I would have had to call for a price adjustment. I was occupied with a camping trip for a couple days, and see that the price is now even lower than that. Less than half what I paid. I'm sure I can get the price, but still. I would have potentially asked for two adjustments within two days. I'm glad it's discounted, but I'd enjoy shopping at J Crew instead of feeling like it's often a chore if I didn't know I had to watch to make sure I'm not paying too much.

  25. I sincerely don't comprehend young ladies design in some cases. As a person, web design company I realize that how generally will be up-to-date and how to dress to accommodate my body type (tall and thin), however to the extent young ladies I simply don't comprehend the things young ladies wear at times. I realize young ladies care about style a ton and what they look like, however I would never comprehend the things young ladies wear some of the time. In the event that you could disclose to me what is "in vogue" to a young lady, at that point I'd have the option to comprehend and welcome it more when a young lady attempts to dress well lol!
