J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Some of my comments may have gotten buried in last week's threads, so here's what I got with the big sale:

Playa sandals in bright poppy. They're bright but pretty comfy and were a good price. Full sizes only and I sized up but they're a little loose. Not sure I could have sized down. They remind me of Kino sandals made in Key West with the contrast stitching.

Ruffle mini in linen, white. I ordered two sizes and the smaller fits my waist better (its my usual skirt size). I do have a small waist and I don't think this style would work well if you're straighter. It's more girly and feminine than my usual but I do really like it. Paired with the Irish linen popover in white and a wide tan belt and sandals, it's a great summery look.

High waist shorts in post card print: i also ordered both sizes here but prefer the larger, even though it's a little loose I like the extra fabric so the shorts are wider on the leg. I love the fit. The fabric is light weight and a bit wrinkly (like poplin). The pattern is a bit more whimsical than my usual style but I think I will keep them.

Chambray shirtdress: I also ordered two sizes and the smaller size works better. This is actually a size smaller than I normally wear, but it's not tight and it's a good throw and go option. I tried it with heels and with flats, belted and not. After trying it I think it works better not belted, though I always want to belt.

I did not like the garment dyed utility popover in Neptune green. The fabric is heavier and the fit is too boxy.

    1. Just received the FACTORY colorblock sunglasses. These are tortoise with a mirror lens. I ordered them months ago and they were back ordered. I opened the box not realizing they were factory and thought they were the Sam sunglasses I ordered. Other than the fact that there's a little scratch on the arm and the lens was smudged, they look good. Curious to see how the retail Sam varies in quality for a significant price increase.

  2. Has anyone tried the Audrey glitter flat? I'm looking to spice up my shoe wardrobe since my clothing choices are limited and these look so pretty. They would look great with my new Jackie cardi in ochre! Reviews say they run slightly big which would be perfect. Love to hear anyone's thoughts!

    1. I am an 8 in Ceces and 7.5 in Gemmas and Sadies and the Audrey was too big for me in an 8. I didn't try the 7.5 though to tell you if you should size down even further though.

    2. I just received Audreys today and they were 1/2 size too big (length, width wise they were fine).

    3. Funny but I took my true size in the Audrey glitter flats.
      They are gorgeous....highly recommend!

    4. I have last season's Audrey's in snakeskin printed leather and took my usual J. Crew shoe size

  3. Picked up the Jewel Box Necklace at my local store today when I went to retrieve a ship to store order. It's exactly what I've been looking for to coordinate with a Topshop dress I have picked out for my sisters wedding this fall. The colors are so vibrant!

The SAs at my store had no clue about style guides or the changing of what's released to be more seasonally appropriate. While I understand the thought behind both ideas I'm struggling with them as a consumer. I like to plan outfits for special events and with this new wave of thinking it's making it hard to do so. Plus the counter seemed so bare without the glossy style guide covers on it!

  4. I had a question about the way returns are processed. Has anyone ever paid partially with a giftcard and credit card at JCrew or Madewell? I know some stores will refund the entire amount to a credit card, like Victoria's Secret. As long as a credit card is used for some portion of the payment. Is this the case with JCrew and Madewell or do the refund the money to each method of payment used? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jessica - yes, in my experience my B&M would refund the entire amount to my JC card. However, I don't know if that was at the discretion of the store - maybe Ina can chime in.

If I send back returns by mail, I would get a gift card in the amount that I used on the order and the rest credited back to my card.

    2. Agree. Store return will put entire amount back on the CC.

  5. Tried the tiger silk pants, but they didn't work for me. Too wide looking in the crotch/hips, seemingly because of how the pockets are designed. The print is cute, though, and I'll stalk the blouse on sale eventually. I did purchase the New York sweatshirt. I don't think it's one to size down for (I tried both the XXS and the XS, went with the XS). Good quality, cozy feel, not too shlubby.

  6. I picked up a ship to store order today and had a chance to try a few things on from the new rollout.

Camo Tippi is super cute but I'm on the fence actually. I don't think I will wear it much and the tee, pants or jacket might be a better choice in this print for versatility for casual wear. My store is still waiting for the tee.

Tried on the tiger pants and no bueno. I have the last version in the shirt and that print is much more elegant IMO. I just looked goofy in these.

Loved the Ruffle Chino Jacket, waiting for promo. I will get a lot of wear out of this one and it reminds me of the little Ruffled Trench from a few years back that I adored.

Nothing else really wowed me but I will get the jacket and probably camo tee eventually from this rollout and wait for fall. Sale was 50% off but kind of sparse. There's a whole lotta OTS and ruffles going on that have to make it to sale eventually. The SAs were very cagey about the next style guide and said maybe next month "around this time."

  7. Hi JCA's!

9” lookout high-rise jean in Meyer wash (G2516) - I thought these were quite true to the online image in terms of color. Soft, stretchy, felt like pajama jeans but looked more like real jeans. I’m between a 27 and 28 in JC jeans - the 27 fit but looked tighter on the thighs than they felt. Would probably stick with the 28.

Scoopneck linen tank top (G5463) - Finally, a tank that’s cut to cover bra straps. I wear a lot of JC linen tees in the summer but have tended to stay away from the tanks because they’re often too low-cut. Took my usual S but found a little size variation by color - the S in mint felt more like an XS while the mossy grove and fuchsia were fine. I expect them to stretch out a little when wearing, but in my experience with JC linen it stretches when worm, looks a little shrunken after washing, then stretches again.

Striped boatneck T-shirt (G7758) - Too much of a square with sleeves for me. The dropped shoulders made points at the seam which jutted out - it’s like they didn’t drop them enough. In addition, there’s a navy seam from shoulder to shoulder that dips under the neckline (you can barely see it in the online pic) and mine was sewn crooked. Thinner fabric than the other boatneck tees (E6466), IMO.

New York sweatshirt (G9482) - Not terry or french terry, but a thick shirt - anybody remember the “city tees” from way back? I have long arms and found the sleeves to be 3/4 length on me, so maybe those of you with normal arms will find them slightly shorter than long sleeves? Hard to tell in the pic because the model has them pushed up. It fit nicely in S but I may try sizing up for some slouch / insurance if it shrinks in the wash.

Knot-back tank top (G7482) - I sized up per the reviews and think that was the right call. My usual size would’ve fit but may have been tight in the upper chest. Love the light moss color.

    2. i ordered the NY sweatshirt too. i got the XS (the S is still on its way) and the body part of the shirt is perfect, but yeah, the sleeves are a hair short. rolled up the sleeves and it's awesome and i think they'll be fine if i wear a shirt under (with the sleeves poking out a bit) but by itself, i think the sleeves are a little more on the bracelet-sleeves side. i'll see how the S fits, but i think it'll be too large overall. i still really like it tho.

    3. I just received the NY sweatshirt too. I ordered small which is my larger shirt size and it's a bit baggy through the body. Am thinking it might be a tad slouchier than I want but the sleeves are a touch short of my wrists. Would like the XS for the body but I think the sleeves are better in the small. It's comfy though and I really like it. I just hate returns so I'm not sure about reordering. I think the full price is a good price on this.

  8. After hearing great reviews about the tiered maxi dress (blue&white stripe) I was finally able to find it in store a little while ago and just wore it. I love it and think the great reviews are deserved. The quality is good and although it's not lined through the skirt it feels substantial. Lining it probably would've made it hot. I had to size down for the chest to fit well (I'm small chested) and it's the tiniest bit snug at the rib cage but still very comfy. At 5'7" it doesn't fall to my ankles but I was fine with it not being as long as I expected. I wore it to my anniversary dinner and felt dressed up enough but I'd also wear it casual. I actually enjoyed wearing it, it was fun to wear it which is nice to say.

Tiered eyelet skirt (from ready to party collection)- I received this in orchid blue and have to say it's well made and a lovely color. I absolutely don't need another skirt but it's beautiful and I can't part with it. It was back ordered for a while and honestly I have no events to wear it to but I will wear it casually with a tee or tank. It's cotton and although it says dry clean I'll likely chance it and wash it as I hate dry cleaning. Reviews said it ran small, I've been a zero or 2 in skirts this year and the 2 is the right fit. The zero was def too tight. A 4 would be too loose in the hips although the waist would likely still be fine. If you have more curves sizing up would probably be the right call. It sits high on my waist and falls below the knee.

I'm still waiting on my purchases from last week's crazy sale.

    1. @jan, glad you're keeping that skirt as it's lovely and will serve you well on future occasions. I sometimes buy quality pieces like this, despite lacking an immediate need, b/c I wonder whether J.Crew will still be around in future. :-(

So glad that dress worked out so well!

    2. Thank you @TM93! I know you love skirts too. :) I was surprised to see both marked down today, too bad I'm too far from cutoff for price adjustments.

  9. noticed another lovely Drake silk print in Collection store today - dainty vines, flowers, maharajahs out hunting, on (oh, well) an orange background. Also noticed a lot of salmon things - no, they weren't having a bagels brunch, but man that color will just not go away.

    4. Oh, that's a great print, but I HATE orange.

    5. That melon color....not nice for fall season. Does it pair well with any jewel tones?

      Delete
    6. I think it's actually nice for fall and the little hunters are jewel tones, it's just that orange is so not flattering to my skin tone. Then again, at least I'm not tempted to get it.

    7. I really like the colors on this one. I have two pairs of Drakes pants so not sure if I can really have more... I only see a scarf and shoes in this print but I would possibly do a top if they make one.

    8. Love that print too but agree that I'm not into the orange. I'd wear the shoes in that colour perhaps but don't think I would like a shirt that colour.

    9. I went by the soho store for try-ones. This new Drake print also comes in elastic waist/drawstring silk pants, widish leg. The color is more coral in person than orange on line. It is a whole lot of pinkish/orange. The store only had a 4 as the smallest size and an SA told me I should be a 0 in these (I am usually a JC 2 bottoms). I looked ridiculous, even if you ignored the fact that I was wearing the wrong size. I don't know anyone who'd wear such a loud color on the bottom. And the drawstring AND elastic waistband made it look cheap.
I also tried on the mensy cardigan and feel compared to the Jackie it is slightly looser in the arms. You certainly can take your regular Jackie size and still wear long sleeves under.
I tried on the tiger pants as well in 0 and 2. They fit like the past Drake silk pants, which for me means I can never wear them on account of a bubble butt effect.
I went in to the store to find the sleeveless saint james tee. They didn't have the size in the color I wanted. I am normally a small in JC and needed an Xs in this tee. The small was fine width wise but the arm holes were too large.

  10. Good morning JCA's - more reviews! (Spoiler: more loves than I expected)

Relaxed boatneck sweater (H0426) - Honesty, I thought this looked like the models were wearing this backwards in some of the online pics. IMO, there’s no way that you can wear this off the shoulder unless you size up 1 or 2 (I think the model might be wearing an L). My usual S fit similarly to a Tippi (fitted, but not tight). The neckline didn’t seem to be wide enough to pull it off the shoulder (my bra straps didn’t show when it was centered). It was soft and I appreciate that it’s 100% cotton. The spice color is very pretty. I don’t know that I want to mess around with trying another size.

Daisylace dress (G7489) - Holy flattering! I had to try this after seeing how great Anne looked. I have a wedding to attend in October. The smoky coral color is very pretty and a little brighter than the online image but not by much. These fit-and-flare dresses usually don’t work on me but this one is great - doesn’t cut in too much at the waist or flare out too much at the hips. I took my usual 4 and couldn’t size down or it would be too tight in the waist. Had a funny smell but I think (hope?) it would air out.

Long-sleeve striped dress (G7980) - I have and love its predecessor (F1725), so I was excited to see this colorway even though I said “Uggggh…” when I realized it wasn’t maxi length. However, I like this one a lot. It is an almost identical cut to F1725 - darts in the front and back, hidden zipper, but no back slit. I think that the cut is a little less tight on the top than the maxi version - I took a 4 in both but the maxi felt a little more restrictive in the upper chest/shoulders where this version does not. Here’s my conundrum - I’m 5’5” and this hits about 3” below the knee. Still doesn’t look frumpy/matronly (another inch and I think it would have), but a little below the knee would be more flattering for me. Has anybody hemmed a dress like this before? The petite version is about 3.75” shorter but I don’t want to change any of the proportions of the rest of the dress.

    1. Received the Long-sleeve striped dress (G7980) yesterday. I also have and love its predecessor (F1725). I agree that it is an almost identical cut to F1725 but just a little roomier in the top than the maxi version. I also took the same size as the maxi version and think it works well for me. Looking forward to wearing this one soon!

  11. What's wrong with the flamingo t-shirt? It was just released but it's now $24.99 plus 60% off. That makes it $10. Unfortunately, it's final sale, but wasn't it a new arrival like a week or two ago?

    1. I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I saw it in store when it was first released, it looked as pictured on the website. I ordered it this morning, and although the promo says 60% off final sale styles, it was not marked as final sale in my cart when I checked out.

  12. Stopped by 5th Ave yesterday to pick up my tiger print Academy loafers (love them). I ended up also loving and buying the New York sweatshirt, as well as a less-new style: the limited edition paint splatter fatigue button up shirt.

  13. Comparison of the Betty sunglasses on sale (tortoise mirror) vs. the Factory colorblock sunglasses. Shapes are similar but I have to say the quality of the Betty seems a bit nicer. I tried them on in store and really, really like them a lot. The factory ones are great backups though.
