JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. This is a clothing care question. What do you use to keep white bright? I don't like to use bleach, I think it makes yellowing worse. I know there are special whitening agents you can use but I'm more about multi-purpose cleaners like vinegar, borax, etc. I posted on the looking to love page about using ivory soap to treat stains on white clothes but I'd love to know if you have a tried and true way to keep white buttons downs, etc white without bleaching.

    1. My husband swears by Oxi Clean, and sometimes he'll leave things like what t-shirts to soak in that before they go through the wash. I know some people make a paste with it, too.

  2. Another question, does anyone have the Madewell TALISA BUCKLE sandals in saddle? And does anyone know if there are in store promos at Madewell for shoes?

I ordered the Mariel Buckle sandals and like them ok but my very tall daughter LOVES them. I really needed a new pair of saddle colored sandals so wanted to see if these would fit the bill.

    1. Do you like them? Do they look nice on the foot?

    2. Well I see you got them. They do look nice on the foot and my foot is slightly wide. I had to size down a half a size. I found them a bit long and loose on the heel in my normal size. I am peeved I paid almost $100 for them and now they're $40. I feel I've learned my lesson this past month with Madewell. They may not do promos the way JCrew does, but they do make multiple deep discounts on their sale items. It's effectively the same thing. I won't be buying anything from them unless it has reached that deep discount.

    3. You could always buy and return again if your size is available and it's within the return period. I totally understand how you feel.
I try to only buy sale unless I'm madly in love, specifically because it really kills me when I pay more than necessary. I've bought a handful of things with only a basic promo and more often that not, within a few weeks I find they're further reduced. Granted, Madewell does not offer promos the way JCrew does.
The last time they had the extra 30%off sale I bought the Mariel because I didn't think I wanted the heel height or the amount of buckles that the Talisa has, but now that I've tried both I do prefer the Talisa.

    4. Unfortunately I am just after the 30 day mark. I think I bought them June 18th. I haven't worn them yet since Portland has just now gotten to sandal weather. The size 8 does pop back in the morning, but I don't want to risk buying them final sale and not being able to return the original ones.

Madewell doesn't do promos, but the do make more discounts on sale. These sandals have been marked down three times I believe. I bought them at the "sale" price, then they wen't to a clearance ".99" price and then marked down to the price they are now. I've notice that trend with almost all the Madewell items I've bought. JCrew tends to mark them on sale and that sale price holds pretty firm unless their is a ton of inventory or colors, or it goes to Final Sale. It's like Madewell has the additional 30-60% off built in by continuing to discount the price. It's a different strategy and it's pretty clever because it makes it look like they don't do sales.

I've just taken this as an expensive learning experience.

    5. Jessica, I've def had this happen to me and it stinks, especially if you haven't worn them yet. If you live near a Madewell maybe you could try to return them (and reorder if you still want them). I've had luck with them taking things back just a few days past the 30 day period. Also, the 30 days starts from when the item is shipped.

    6. I agree, especially considering they haven't been worn!

    7. Also, Suz Has, I meant to tell you that azshoegirl posted these shoes on IG a while back. I think she got them in black. Jessica mentioned she sized down a half size. Did you find them tts?

    8. I saw azshoegirl got them, of course I checked her IG first because she gets all the shoes! ;) I have mostly been wearing 8.5 in Madewell and JCrew (sometimes 9) and I assumed I'd need the 8.5 but found the 9 at my store and it felt ok. There's a tiny bit of room in front of my toe but not enough for me to think I'd def need the 8.5 so I took the 9. I def couldn't have gone any smaller than 8.5.
      I like them.

    9. Thanks for the advice. I gave it a try and she was willing to do the return and repurchase to a gift card, not perfect, but a decent compromise. I did want to get that leather skirt if it pops back in my size again.

Does anyone know how long this sale is supposed to last? I can't click on "details" for that information.

    10. The extra 30 supposedly ends Monday.

    11. Reporting back on the shoes, again. I think the 9 is what I would need. Tried them on with the white ruffle skirt (see bewlo) and they look really good. For me I like them a lot better than the Mariel, but my daughter loved the Mariel so I'll pass them To her .

  3. Styling the lemon beaded tassel earrings and Factory white straight & narrow denim on the blog today. Jeans are amazing and fit TTS. Actually ordered these from last year, and they're the only pair I wear.

  4. I received the linen ruffle skirt in white and tried it on with two different white linen tops as a dress alternative (I love monochromatic dressing). It's definitely more girly than my usual style but I do like the skirt. The second size is on its way and I'll decide which fits better. Pic on IG @wearthislikethis. I'd love to know your thoughts.
