I still can't get on board with J.Crew offering sports apparel. (The section that was once prominently featured in my local store is now cast to a corner. Seems fitting.) I think it is fine as a collaboration with New Balance, but not as a dedicated line. But what do I know!

Blargh. I really dislike final sale. And to only get an additional 30% off when it has been 40% off for so long seems like a weird move. (Stores have been offering an additional 50% off sale for quite some time still.) Yet, I am happy to see that they are still offering an additional 50% off for some final sale items.

Will you be taking advantage of this promotion? What item are you hoping to pick up? Please share!

  1. Reposting my comment from an earlier thread:

I know they're trying to persuade customers to pay full-price, but I wish they'd realize that some customers (moi!) are more likely to buy a few things with even a small 'New Arrivals' promo. 10%, 25% off of some of these SPRING items might entice shoppers like myself to buy now. Many of us are going into the dead of winter, even customers living down south, so it's hard for some to justify paying full-price now for a thin cotton sleeveless top or cropped pants, etc., that we won't be wearing anytime soon. I like the ruffle-bib top and the windowpane Marties but I can wait to buy them, especially at 'full-price'. (Also, pricing is a psychological game -- items are overpriced to begin with and shoppers know that. If a retailer offers the illusion that an item is on sale, perhaps some might be tempted to buy.) This is my personal impression anyway, could very well be wrong since I'm not in Sales or Marketing and there might be a solid reason for these methods.

As for Final Sale, I don't know why they mess with that promo at all. If shoppers STILL didn't buy some of this stuff at 50%, I'm not sure why 30% off might be expected to move more merchandise? Oh well.

    1. I should add that I realize there are shoppers with Spring break/winter vacations coming up and that many will appreciate current offerings more immediately. However, it still seems like sales are probably quite slow after the holidays, so you'd think there might be a bit more effort made to attract shoppers. (Even the 25% off Sports clothing seems to be coming late, when many New Years resolution shoppers intent on returning to the gym will probably already have picked up gear with other retailers by now.) But who knows, maybe they know what they're doing and it ends up working out for shoppers and retailers alike.

    2. I am totally with you on the sale promo jumping around. Sometimes I'll bite on a pop back if the % off is a little lower just because I've been stalking the item, but I try to buy sale items during 40% off promos or greater.

Knowing that spring stuff will probably be on sale when I'm ready to wear them in 6 months (#Wisconsin), it'd take a major promo to get me to pull the trigger.

      That's all to say... I'm with you, TM93 :-)

  2. I suppose J Crew, since they're losing money, may really need to make some of their dollars by getting people to pay FP either because they need the item now (have a lifestyle that includes travel and paying FP), or because they are loyal and really do not want to miss out on a must-have in their size. I'm also not in marketing or sales ;)

I wonder if that strategy really pays off... I'm in Wisconsin like @Monica Bonica, and it just doesn't make sense to buy anything now that I won't need until Spring or Summer, unless it looks totally worth it. Usually, it's not. I did just pay FP for last year's long-sleeve striped maxi dress. I think it's worth it. I don't see any value pieces like that in New Arrivals. Like @TM93, I totally agree even a token
promo would encourage sales...free shipping, and 10-20% off.

Also agreed about the sports line... I really hope they aren't putting too much energy into the athleisure market. I doubt most J Crew shoppers want to wear yoga pants out and about. With any luck they can get out of that area pretty quickly without too much damage.

    1. That long sleeve striped maxi is one of the best purchases I made from J.Crew last year! I think I paid full price (or maybe a small promo, but I do know there was a lot of champagne involved when I added it to my cart and clicked check out), and I get zillions of compliments each time I wear it.

Also, yay Wisconsin! I'm in Madison :-)

    2. Fellow Wisconsinite, checking in from Appleton! Totally agree, I've no interest in spring clothes when it'll be months before I can wear them. Now, if JC would come out with some interesting sweaters or warm blazers to chase away the mid-winter blues, I'd definitely be tempted.

    3. @cobalt, Hello! Is there a J Crew in Appleton? Have you true either the sweater blazer or the cropped lady jacket? I'm attracts to both, but wonder how I would wear the lady jacket now, considering that we need to wear real coats right now.

@Monica Bonica, fab to know you're still loving the maxi dress. Lol @ the champagne toast. Mine just arrived today. I'm waiting to try it on. My little one nerds to take a nap eventually...maybe...

    4. @SarahFolz, no JC, Factory, or Madewell up here, so I'm mostly limited to online shopping unless I happen to be in Milwaukee or Madison. I do like to visit those stores when I can, though! The sweater blazer is getting great reviews, but it sounds like it runs so large that I might be sized out. I do have the lady jacket in blue tweed (#25606) from . . . FA12?, love it and wouldn't mind another in that style. And I have Madewell's curator coat from a few seasons ago in a size too large, specifically for wearing over blazers and heavy sweaters. Ah, winter!

    5. @cobalt are you able to get the coat over the lady jacket? I'm not sure if that even works in theory....curious here! It's Nic to have the stores here, but I have found that they don't carry many of the things I'm interested in, anyway ;)

    6. But how absurd is the Madison J.Crew?! It only has women's stuff, and a limited selection at that. Of course that's better than nothing, but it's pretty weird.

I do have a Madewell down the street from where I live, and that Madewell right next to an Anthropologie, so... that's a win :-)

    7. I can layer with the best of 'em. Coats over coats over sweaters over buttondowns over tees . . . . But sometimes I feel like the little kid in the snowsuit who can't bend her arms or legs. :P

    8. @Monica Bonica, love the 'enhanced shopping' champagne experience! Clink clink! (I've certainly done this at home, no lie! :-)

@Sarah Folz, I completely agree with your thoughts about buying certain things FP. Sometimes there are items that speak to you personally. that are such a love. (The star-embroidered Tippi and a navy polka-dot spaghetti strap were such items for me.)

How cool is it that all of you Wisconsin JCAs found each other? Small world!

  3. Honestly, what's the point of paying full price? Most of the items that I covet eventually go on sale. I was convinced that the striped ruffle shirt with a neck tie would sell out, but lo and behold, I got it on sale for $24.
I have yet to see something in new arrivals that I would pay full price for.

    1. The only thing I was willing to pay full price for was the scallop skirt in khaki in a tall. Stalked the website since the rollout and it kept showing as only the green was available in tall, so I gave up. Lo and behold go on this morning and they're now offering the skirt in a tall khaki and of course it is sold out in both my sizes. Oh well, more money in my pocket and maybe I'll be lucky and catch a pop back on sale.

    2. Glad to hear the sale-stalking works out for you. I think FP is okay when the item really fills a need and fits perfectly. Sometimes I settle for 'almost' the right fit, because it's on significant sale. That for me loses a lot of the value. I have poor luck getting my size on sale. If it's just a want, I can wait or do without. If, however, I could find a quality pair of well-fitting jeans, I would pay full price. I don't have any that work at the moment, and it would be worth it to me for the right pair.

  4. I'm not on a shopping ban, but if I was this promo would help me stick to it. I'm not interested in athleisure wear or in 30% off when it used to be 40% off. I scored a few great pieces like the bright green pin-tucked lace pencil skirt from the sale site over the past few weeks. These items that will be great for Spring, so I'm set until they eventually have a better promo.

  5. The athletic wear section in my store was pretty big and prominent about a month ago, I suppose for the collab launch and to take advantage of the New Years resolution crowd. But I noticed last week that it is really small now and banished to a back corner.

It's hard to believe that the line is going to be successful enough to justify much effort. This promo may be an 11th-hour experiment.

    1. Yeah, I have to agree with this, Ruffles. I know that Mickey was recently quoted as saying the brand was thinking of pursuing the athleisure wear even more strongly (perhaps explaining its beefed-up presence in the latest catalog?) so I guess now is as good a time as any to see if it sticks. Like others have said, it just seems so late in the game for JC to join in, since many of us already have go-tos for this kind of stuff. Anywho, we'll have to wait and see what happens.

  6. I really loved the items from Outdoor Voices that J. Crew used to sell (I purchased both tanks and managed to get the hoodie on sale + 50% off during the holidays!). Wish they had collaborated with them instead. Now I just buy my athleisure wear from OV directly.
