"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Perhaps I’m being premature on my vent but I’m very disappointed about their supposed launch. Very few items. On the plus side I was able to purchase a few items at 70% off. Let’s hope there will be new items during the morning hours.

  2. Unimpressed with the new arrivals... Which is a good thing for my wallet.

  3. Thanks to whichever JCA (it was one of the regulars, I just can't remember who) encouraged patience on my order that had lingered in Greensboro since June 13. It arrived without any announcement on Monday. It makes me hesitant to order anything else. I'm still aggravated it took so long and it makes me hesitant to order again unless I can call and get their guarantee that they won't send it via USPS, which I doubt they'll give unless I pay some high shipping fee.

    1. I'm waiting on an untraceable overdue order as well. Do these all eventually arrive or should I complain?

  4. New arrivals didn't excite me but I had to comment on the WTF-ness of the seersucker ribbon paperbag shorts. They look like someone wanted to upcycle remnants but not in a good way.

  5. Not excited about new arrivals either sadly. I do like the palm print with the pinks but not sure I like the items it’s offered in.

I really liked the rollout a while ago that had the lobster items and Ratti regatta and sail prints.

I received the Ratti sail print dress and while I normally wouldn’t buy a one shoulder dress for myself (just my personal preference) I love the print and will keep it. The cotton is a nice weight, not too thin or thick. It has the cutest tag in the back (pink with a nautical motif) and it reminded me how much I loved those little surprise details that JCrew used to do.

    1. @jan, happy you love the dress! I think I may have have an idea about Jcrew’s shipping practices and shipping issues in general. First of all UPS deliveries go ground and not MI if you purchase a lot of items overall and are on a straight line delivery path. Otherwise they are shipped snail mail. I have had no issues with shipping and received items for whatever in record time shipping to Palm Beach County, Fl. In fairness to UPS, they had nasty weather at their global hub In Louisville, Ky yesterday and early this morning and are desperately doing the best they can updating their shipping.Last of all they are shipping massive amounts of items overall and I can only imagine what it must be like working there and at other locations. My neighbors told me recently they’ve seen trucks in their neighborhood 3-4x’s a day. NARVAR’s system had issues yesterday. I hope everyone receives their items very soon including you. Have a great day and enjoy wearing your dress. I’m sure you look very pretty in it!

    3. Thank you @Lynn! I totally forgot to order a Montauk tee today, I was trying to check out quickly because a white linen shirt came back in stock and forgot about the tee. I like my white one from last year. I also ordered some crewcuts items but that’s it. I hope that the Ratti sweater works out for you!

    4. I think MI = Mail Innovations

  6. I purchased a few of the Montauk tees AP383 although I was hoping they would have done the white with dark letters from last year. Trying the Ratti short sleeve sweater in Safari print AM709 looks unique online but my concern is the linen/ viscose fabric might be very scratchy and size issues. Short—sleeve cardigan in striped featherweight cashmere AM695. I like the gold button details but again concerned about sizing. Other than these, I’m not crazy about the darker color schemes in general, but note these colors will be part of the Autumn/Winter trend and I’ve seen them already in Europe. I hate the burgundy/wine colors they’re so depressing. White, dark greens and blues are also in the menu. Jcrew will certainly lead in the blue shades as always. Quality will be the issue.

  7. Shopping at Jcrew is becoming exhausting after multiple issues. I had to order three different sizes to finally find a tipped sweater blazer that fit. I ordered a pair of pants that sat in waiting for UPS pick up for over a month. After contacting Jcrew, they credited me for the pants & I reordered. The missing pair was delivered and now I have to get it back to them. Now a pair of earrings has been credited as a return today but I didn’t return them. No wonder their finances are in such a mess!

    1. I know sizing issues are so frustrating especially when packages and returns take so long both ways. I should order multiple sizes but I always gamble on one size and hope it works because returns are $30 from Canada.

  8. @Shopping Celle, oh no and I agree about the company’s finances. Had the same issues with a few orders sent back or kept. I was exhausted tracking return orders and recently quipped I would need my accountant to reconcile everything. Interesting you mentioned the tipped sweater blazer. Are you referring to the boyfriend styled or the shorter length one? I have the bf which I had to size down to and ordered the gray/ red one for 70% off and love this item. I hesitated on the latter new style because of the fabric content and sizing issues. Hope you like whichever one you purchased. Can’t wear mine where I am, too bloody hot! Grateful to all here who post comments about sizing and quality.

    1. Hi Lynn. It was the Boyfriend sweater-blazer with contrast trim Item AK185. I wear s to m depending on the cut and I went down to an Xs in this one. I bought the navy sweetbriar/ivory combo and it is really more of a hot pink/light pink look on the tipping to me. The Gray version looks nice as well. Way to hot for it now as it is thick for cooler temperature.

  9. Hi Shopping Celle, thank you for you reply. I sized down as well. Just love the navy/pink and hoping the gray one will be just as nice. Do you have any pairing ideas for the Gray/ Rock Red one in tops other than navy? Thank you and enjoy yours.

    1. I wore the navy jacket with a navy/white striped top, chunky pearls and a Jcrew striped pink/navy d-ring ribbon belt from the archives. (May 1st on Instagram @shoppingcelle) Maybe you could go similar with the gray: Navy/white stripe or the rock red in a stripe. A foulard pattern or small print like polka dot might work in a coordinating color. If you could find a turtle neck or top in a matching gray for a monochrome look it might work but thought of a turtleneck now makes me hot just thinking about it!

    2. @Shopping Celle, Thank your the suggestions. Plenty of gray and navy. Never thought of a polka dot great idea. You look so pretty in your tipped sweater blazer. I agree it's too hot to think of anything else. I am down in Sicily so I wear as little as possible. Thank you so much again and sorry for the lateness in replying.

  10. I, too, am underwhelmed by this rollout. It makes me very nervous for fall, which is when J Crew really shines in my opinion. The silhouettes feel like repeats (remember the mini wrap dress fiasco from last summer?) and way too much linen. (sorry, not a linen lover). Any idea when fall rollout will happen?

    1. @Swap in nova, I’m assuming the end of July or beginning of August with limited releases. There’s an awful lot of clothing they and other retailers still have to sell. I too, feel a little nervous for Fall. I don’t t want to see a lot of wine, or burgundy colors as I’ve posted earlier. Life is dismal enough for many people, they don’t need dismal colors classic or not. Just my humble opinion.

    2. @swp, sorry about the typo on your user name. Appreciate your thought on linen but where I am at the moment it’s terribly hot and the only clothing I’m able to wear is linen, a handkerchief type cotton or nothing at all😂

  11. I agree with everyone here. Not much I’m too excited about. I like the palm print but I’m not buying viscose. I like some of the cotton skirts and they feel appropriate for this summer. I can’t decide if the safari print is juvenile or chic. I think Chris Benz is headed in the right direction so I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt. Fall will be the true test. I don’t think they have to hit it out of the park but they need at least a second or third base hit.

Also, I went to my local store for the first time. We’ve only been open for a few weeks. It felt so nice to do something normal! There was a great sale rack for my littles where I picked up a bunch of tops for just a few bucks each.

    1. @Liz, Hi Liz, OT I was thinking of you recently and your love of Liberty Prints. Mme Jacqueline recently put a post up about a company called Anna Mashburn. They have some beautiful Liberty blouses and face masks. I myself hadn’t heard of this store but they have other beautiful items as well. As far as the Ratti Safari print top I went ahead and ordered it. I’m not crazy about Viscose/ Linen combos but if it’s woven correctly the fabric can be quite nice. Unfortunately up until now Jcrew’s haven’t been good. Very scratchy. I think this print has to been seen in person and tried on. I think it’s whimsical and different but again will wait before making final judgment. I’ve seen these types of prints even with higher end designers and they seem to be popular over here. A lot of people including myself, are looking for cheerful stuff to wear. Jcrew’s little girls clothing looks very cute, better than women’s apparel right now. Agree about Chris Benz will be interesting to see what comes out for Fall. I’m hoping he continues to lean towards bright colors. Happy you were able to get out and go shopping. Must be awful getting stuck at home for so long.

    2. @Lynn and liztriden: I have been very pleased in dealing with Ann Mashburn. They have been lovely. Their site is nicely designed with a curated offering. I am getting worn out with the general sloppiness of the large chain stores. It is so nice to receive a thoughtfully packed order. It tells me a lot about the company. I've found the same with Tory Burch.

    3. Ann (and Sid, her husband) Mashburn used to work for JC so it's not surprising many of us JCAs are attracted to Ann Mashburn's store like moths to a flame!

    4. I can attest as well to the quality of clothing and customer service at Ann Mashburn. It is pricey but you get what you pay for. Their shoes are excellent quality, beating a slew of other brands in terms of fit and style. I would go broke if I bought all my clothes there, so I often look to Ann's line for inspiration and buy elsewhere. But some of her clothing items are really unique in terms of fabric and cut. It's definitely a balance, but JCrew and Ann Mashburn items go very happily together in my closet! I also bought something from Tuckernuck a few weeks ago-they have a couple beautiful Liberty items as well.

    5. @MmeJacqueline, Thank you very much. I initially posted that it was you that mentioned the company and raved about it then. I have since viewed their website and their selection is impressive. I appreciate you mentioned the personal touch they also add. This is a plus for me and I believe for anyone else here. It appears you get what you pay for and I’ve gone ahead and ordered some Liberty Print blouses for a friend. I’m sure she will love them. Thank you again.

    6. @eeps, thank you very much, read the article very interesting.Had no clue about this company nor its founders. They have excellent taste and lovely items. @Corry, thank you very much as well. “You get what you pay for” obviously works for shoppers.

    7. I checked out Ann Mashburn and wow!! So lovely! Thanks everyone for that suggestion.

Also, @lynn please report back on the safari print. You have excellent taste so if you like it I might pick up the popover to wear with a white denim skirt.

    8. @Liz, thank you so much for the nice compliment. I will give you full details on the sweater tee. I’m concerned about the viscose/linen. I like the print, it’s whimsical. Probably pair it with a white denim skirt, jeans or even khaki linen pants. You have very nice taste and I imagine your little ones look read for Vogue Bambini! Aren’t those liberty prints gorges? Pricey but on sale and look very well made. They’ll probably outlast me! Have a lovely weekend and again thanks to Mme Jacqueline for mentioning Ann Mashburn.

  12. I haven't had a chance to check out the new arrivals but sounds like I'm not missing much. Malls are still not open in NY so my store isn't open yet.

I still need to reach out to CS because my last bunch of returns was charged for two labels even though I packed everything in the same box and used one label. I have some other returns to make as well with sizing being inconsistent but I really don't want to pay to send more items back. I'm going to see if I can get shipping waived but I haven't found CS to be very helpful in that regard. I did cave and buy some final sale items with the 70% off, mostly black tops which seem to be my videoconference go to. Also ordered some sandals even though a lot will likely be packed away for next year with how few opportunities I'll have to wear them this summer.

    1. @Anne, call CS again! If you don’t get any satisfaction ask for a supervisor. They are supposed to waive return shipping especially where store are still closed. Good luck.

    2. Lynn, thanks so much for the tip. I will try that.
