J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    5. Hi JCAs! Longtime reader, first time commenting. :) I was at Deer Park, IL today, and they had a well-organized sale section all 60% off. Final sale though, hmph.

I couldn’t resist despite having a whole bag of returns. I picked up the jungle cat silk shirt!

  2. I got the tulip-shaped Liberty skirt today. It's well made, with a navy contrast lining that is sewn all the way around on the bottom edge, so it looks polished despite being able to see the interior. Hope that makes sense. However...the fit may be an issue for some. It's really high-waisted- came to right under my bust. It would be very strange to tuck something in. I'm also fairly hourglass though, so maybe on others with straighter figures you could wear it lower on the hips? I feel like it would be too long then, or baggy on the bottom, though. It seems like it's made to be a flattering, relatively fitted shape for those with more curves, it just sits really high. Curious to see what others think of the fit. I'll likely return the skirt and see what hits sale first, this or the field jacket, and pick one of them up towards the end of season.

    1. Thanks for the review of the tulip skirt, Alyssa. I have it on my wish list but I was concerned about the shape. It sounds like it might actually work for my shape.

  3. For those having sale section withdrawal, LL Bean has temporarily reduced prices in their clearance section. If you wear a size XXS, I see at least 3 Signature cotton fisherman sweaters marked down to $32-35. I have several of these sweaters and I love them. I'd buy them in a second if they were my size, but I need a large. 😕 Just an fyi: they aren't a soft cotton. They're thick, tightly knit and, true to their description, "crispy."

    1. Love their cotton fishermen sweater. I have 3. Yes exactly as Jeanne said they are crispy but substantial! I’m usually an XS and bordering to small in Jcrew but I got a small in the sweater because the Xs was too snug and showed my “need to work out my abs” belly ;)! Great deal at $32. Thanks for sharing!!

  4. Appears to be some new arrivals up on the retail site. Factory still looks incredibly dismal.

    1. I only saw one page of new arrivals, and most of those I'd already seen before, weirdly. I don't think new rollout is supposed to be until next week at the earliest. Maybe I am checking too often ;)

  5. Extra 10% off email just arrived. No code attached so it must be automatic off purchases. Nothing of interest, new items pretty blasé.

  6. I love this time of year. 😂 I just scrolled through ten pages of new arrivals and didn't feel the need to buy anything.

OTOH what level of crazy would I be considered if I paid a seamstress to rehab my old favorite 7FAM skinny jeans. They're shredded beyond wear, I did some DIY patching and can try to do more, but it may be beyond my skill level. I have not have a pair of skinny jeans before or since that fit like these. They're a little loose but in a good way. I searched on Poshmark and found them in a size 24 which I'm tempted to buy. Mine are a size 26 and loose, I'm not sure if the 24 would be way too tight. (I guess I could measure tight skinny jeans and check measurements). The kicker is they're over 12 year old and the way they fit the knees ripped the first day I wore them when I went to sit for circle time in my daughter's preschool class.

    1. Ok, even crazier. I JUST found them in a size 25 on Poshmark in a faded black and just got them for $22! Last night when I searched I checked BLUE as a filter. I don't mind the faded black at all.

      Delete
    2. Fun! That was an easy score and you (especially you) can't go wrong with black, right? I like faded black jeans.

  7. Suz, not crazy! Do you have a Nordstrom Card? If so check you alteration balance. I brought in a favorite pair of jeans that were ripped to shreds in the knees and they did a wonderful job.

    2. Madewell had an embroidery kit in the sale section. Probably still overpriced for what it is but it's a hobby I actually might really enjoy. I'm going to check Amazon, etc and see otherwise I'll go back to Madewell and buy it.
Last nig my husband encouraged me to start sparkling and painting a hall closet so we can hang shelves, but embroidering old jeans might be more fun. 😂

    3. I embroidered a denim jacket in the 1970's. I have no idea what happened to it - suspicious that my mom tossed it when I was away from home. Because the embroidery was all "band" logos! I would love to have it now! We also used to get these embroidered patches at the sewing store and then sew them on jeans and bags etc. Anyway, it is not hard to do. You can google all the different stitches, and practice them on some scrap cloth first. But if you can do the split stitch, satin stitch, stem stitch, french knots you can work out any design. Go for it! You can just buy a small ring and needles and floss for very little at JoAnn fabrics.

    4. On the subject of embroidery, one of my favorite bloggers has been experimenting with it. Check out this amazing Frida Kahlo project she did.

She also recently did Elizabeth I

      http://bluecollarredlipstick.com/2019/02/i-did-a-thing-vol-16/

The blog is a good read. She's an amazing thrifter who has found some envy-inducing scores which you can also read about on her blog. (Burberry?! Dries Van Noten?! Philip Lim?!) But I am just too lazy to go the thrifting route.

    5. I'm also too lazy to try the embroidery...

    6. Oh I can't wait to check out that blog, I can't knit or crochet, I am ambidextrous in a way that makes it hard for me to do, but I enjoy stitching so I think I'd really like it. Bring a little creative, meditative activity to my life

    7. When I was about 6 I had some denim shorts that were covered in patches that my mom embroidered. She just did it to pass the time. I’d do anything to have them again! I love embroidered denim jackets and jeans now but am too lazy to do it myself.

    8. At Madewell the sales assoc was wearing an o,I've jacket with some yellow embroidery. It was simply done but added a really unique touch. I have to assume she did it with the kit.

  8. I received my last order from the dear departed sale section. There was no % off that day, but it was not final sale. I got the Mr. a pair of Baird McNutt linen shorts in a great sky blue color - he loves them, so well worth the $19.

Plus I decided to try a pair of wide leg high waist light weight chinos (think they were 2016/17) that popped up in a 2. They have no belt loops or waist band: Cropped pant in stretch chino G7465. They were $30, so exceeded my $20 sale pants rule. But figures that they fit me great, and will be perfect for work next summer. I even like the color, which is Golden Tea, a slightly greenish khaki.

    1. Those are cute, I don't think I've ever seen them before. The waistband is different. They'd probably have to be a great fit to work.

      Delete
    2. I suspect the no-waist is more flexible than you might think. Fortunately they fit my hips and waist closely without tightness (suspect there will be some stretching, hope not much) Plus the 27" length falls just above my ankle which I like. The high waist adds back length the cropping takes away. Much better fit than the Tall wide-leg cropped pant in cotton-poplin J1024 which have an elastic waist - they gave me diaper-butt in the 2 and pulled at the crotch in 0, despite the glowing reviews.

      Delete
    3. I feel like I tried them previously but I don't see them in my email history. Is the leg really wide? I distinctly remember the pair I liked had too wide a leg for meto be cropped, but those might have had the exposed button fly.

      Delete
    4. The leg is fairly wide and does flare from below the pockets, but the longer length compensates...going to measure...the bottom circumference is 22", actually 1" smaller than the Point Sur crop jeans (the ones where you let out the hem).

      Delete
    5. That actually sounds perfect, glad they work for you, $30 is fine if you'll wear them and they're flattering!!!

  10. I lasted a very unimpressive 9 days without an order. But today, I broke my fast. Today's COFFEE promo was not very exciting but there were a couple of good popbacks in the men's sections. I guess the men of Reddit's Frugal Male Fashion are returning the things that didn't work out for them :-). Got a couple of men's sweatshirts and hoodies in the $30 Canadian range. Not as good as the great "flashening" event (as the FMF crowd now refer to it) but still pretty good prices if they work out and none of them are final sale.

I have to confess that I did pick up a couple of white t-shirts for myself. I am constantly searching for the ultimate white t-shirt, and I'm going to try the Essentials style K4224. With the promo, they were about $11 each. I tried the striped one J7972 on in the store and liked the fit a lot and bought it. Hopefully washing will not alter the fit. While the plain t-shirts are eligible for the 40% off COFFEE sadly (or perhaps fortunately, for me) the striped shirts are excluded.

A couple of things I wanted to pass along. I'm 5 ft tall with a long torso and short legs, and I think the length is perfect, but I think it may be too short for taller ladies. If you're interested in the t-shirt, the pictures of the model show the length accurately. Also, the actual shirt has a Mercantile label (which you would never know from the website). I know people are a little leery of Mercantile items. Although I can't speak to longevity yet, I think the quality is probably OK for the price.

Sizing-wise, I went with S because I have bigger shoulders/arms. Fit in the body has more ease than some other J Crew styles (but you can see this from the website photos).

    1. Hi Torontomodern, I hope the white tee works out! I have one white old painter tee which I love but rarely wear since I’m afraid to ruin it lol. I did love the perfect tees (with longer sleeve length although longer sleeve makes it a bit dressier) but I recently ordered a white one and it is noticeably thinner and more sheer than my older white one which is at least a year old.

  11. Very OT question: Has anyone had microblading done?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not me, but I recommended to an acquaintance who was drawing on eyebrows every day. She had a 'less is more' version done and was quite pleased. If you do, research research research as this is a skill, and not everyone who does it is skilled.

When I was an adolescent my grandmother told me I must never ever pluck my eyebrows, not a single hair, and I actually listened to her. So I had unfashionable eyebrows that are now reasonably fashionable. I confess I do pull out the uni-brow center hairs on my husband, but not too carefully, so it stays natural looking.

    2. It is not something I had ever considered doing, but I am a dedicated penciler and have been for years. It was offered to me for free at a doctor's office on Park Ave. I just can't decide.

      Delete
    3. I have a cousin who, although she's got thick dark hair and an olive complexion, has very sparse eyebrows and she had it done years ago. If not done correctly it can look really fake, but hers is well done. She also went to a place in NYC.

      Delete
    4. PBanos I always told my girls to be careful and not over tweeze. One day my middle daughter came home and her friend had done her eyebrows, she had two commas above her eyes. I yelled at both of them. My youngest has perfect brows and lashes. She has asked me to wax and I told her her skin is too sensitive and she can't touch them. If she has any stray in the middle she can tweeze but I don't like waxing.

      Delete
    5. @Suz Has, well they will grow back after one bad tweezing, but over time you kill the hair follicle. Then as you age they can get thinner anyway.

      Delete
    6. @Cheritheberry - I haven’t had it done but I’ve researched it. I even have a microblader chosen, if I ever decide to go through with it. I have very sparse, light colored, almost invisible brows. With my oily skin, brow products rarely stay put for more than a few hours. I’d love to be able to skip brow makeup. What’s holding me back: it’s painful, the recovery time is unsightly and unpleasant, touchups are almost always needed and the whole process has to be repeated every few years. It’s also fairly expensive.

      Delete
    7. I have never and will never wax my brows. I have always done careful tweezing, but never to the extent of the popular 90s brows (thank God).
I'm going to try it. I had eyelash extensions done once for free and that was all it took for me to know it was not for me. My boyfriend still occasionally brings up how much he did not care for them. I'm fair and it was too much without eyeliner to balance the dark lashes.

      Delete
    8. P banos, I know! That's why I encouraged my girls not to do it.
I waxed a few times but I admit to doing a thin nineties brow once or twice. I specifically remember seeing Niki Taylor on an ad when I was working in advertising and thinking, why...I think I kind of did it accidentally but anyway, my brows are a little more Sparce than I like now, I've stopped tweezing almost all together and use a serum a few times a week.

      Delete
    9. @Suz Has, just checked-out your brows on your 1987 flashback Insta! They were pretty full then, plus nice and dark.

Here's to Audrey Hepburn, and Brooke Shields!

      https://www.instyle.com/beauty/eyes/history-eyebrows?slide=599651#599651

      @Cheritheberry - you've struck on a hot topic unrelated to our JCrew-ishness!

      Delete
    10. Haha! 1987 was pre-big tweeze of the mid 1990s. I def used to just shape the middle back then.

  12. Still holding strong but I did peruse the 40% off promo this morning but nothing is a must have. A day early for the vent thread but I wanted to wear my new poppy silk blouse this morning only to discover that the security tag was still on it. UGH. Not sure how I didn't notice when I tried it on, it's the smaller grey ones but what a PITA. I do have to return the chateau parka so I'll have them remove it when I go in but it's especially annoying when you want to wear the item!

So I switched gears and am wearing a 3/4 sleeve navy/grey/pink argyle cashmere crewneck sweater from 2006. It's so soft. It was an eBay find several years ago and it is in pristine condition. I am wearing it tucked in to the navy micro pleated midi skirt with a crystal floral statement necklace, navy tights and grey suede Crew Adele booties which were a Posh score.

  13. Cheri, yes I’ve had it done. The end result is beautiful. I had areas of thinning brows and tried brow gels, pencil, etc. Depends on if there is a need or a desire. I felt in my case there was a need and they look very natural. Very time consuming procedure but again worth it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lynn, that is how I feel. I like my shape enough but they are sparse, and one is better than the other. I'm sure when I state I want only a natural look, they will be more than happy to oblige.

Also more information regarding Rago. I sent in my package last week, got the quote Thursday (paid), and today got a UPS notification that it is on it's way back to me. I have also visited many times and toured the facility and it is a very nice family and impressive!

  14. For what it's worth, microblading isn't nearly as permanent as the old school eyebrow tattoos, as far as I'm aware. That said, I rock powder and a little angled brush to add some oomph to my brows each morning. It only adds about a minute to my routine, and the product I use lasts forever.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I love boy brow by Glossier for this reason. It's the only "makeup" I wear most days!

      Delete
    2. I bought Boy Brow and expected it to be an even quicker route to the result, but it's actually too subtle for me.

      Delete
    3. Monica, which powder do you use? I used Boy brow and a similar maybelline version but I don't think either is dark enough for me. I don't really do it when I go to the gym but otherwise I do it all the time. Bobbi Brown (before she left) always used one of her shadows with an angled brush but now there are many more speciality products. I have been using a pencil I got from ipsy but I prefer the powder.

      Delete
    4. I use Anastasia brow gel and it has totally changed my brow game. I used to use Bare Minerals powder but switched to the gel earlier this year. You hardly need any but it applies nicely and stays all day.

Re: microblading - I'll ditto what Monica said - it is a semi-permanent option. If you're considering it, I would recommend researching who you'd be seeing, seeing examples of their work, etc. I worked p/t at a spa for 10 years and am friends with a few estheticians who do it and have seen examples of great work, but it can depend on what you want to have done.

  22. Also an early vent... Which JCA said the Blythe blouse comes apart at the shoulder seams? It also comes apart on the wrist seams upon the first wearing. You have to laugh. I was fretting over a pull that wrinkled the fabric and a stray loose thread when I saw that I had two 4-5 inch tears along both lower arms. Worn for about 8 hours. Hilarious. The top is so beautiful and soft, and I had compliments on it. Self-destructive is a deal-breaker, though. I don't like returning worn merchandise, but this is ridiculous.

    3. I had to get rid of my dot silk Blythe after only two wearings. It was basically falling apart at the seams and it was actually oversized on me, so not my fault. Have never ordered another one due to that and it looks like that was a good call. Definitely take it back and repeat the word defective if you get any pushback.

    4. @Sarah That was me, my polka dot Blythe pulled apart at the shoulders and I received a replacement which held up beautifully. But this was 5 years ago. I still have that Blythe and am planning on selling it because it is just not practical for my lifestyle, but the moral of the store is that silk needs to be substantial and good quality!

  23. Thanks for the link. A lot of good information in other posts on the www.putthison.com site about fabrics, clothing care and sneaker cleaning! Interesting comment in another article on the site that JCrew is talking to the Old Navy CEO as a potential replacement for Jim Brett. Yes - this is the guy that lasted a short time at Ralph Lauren, devaluing that brand before RL took back creative control.
Quote .... "Fans of the company worried Larsson was going to strip out everything that makes the brand compelling in the first place and reduce it to a bland, middle-of-the-road fast-fashion retailer with quick turnaround schedules and generic clothes.

A year later, Ralph Lauren abruptly announced that Larsson will be leaving after a creative clash with the company’s founder, sending shares of the struggling brand into a tailspin (again, in historical time, Larsson’s tenure is measured as six Scaramuccis). The company took about a year to recoup and it’s since spun 180 degrees, moving from news that it might be stripping down its operations to aggressively championing its heritage and vision."

    Is there hope for JCrew?

    1. @GoWest - It's frustrating to see these companies hire people who either have absolutely no relevant experience or have histories of being fired for incompetence at other companies, then they act surprised when the new hires do an awful job at their company. What did you expect???

      Delete
    2. At this point mind as well give it a go. James Brett already stripped down the image of the company making it more generic to the public while also introducing subpar quality garments. The price doesn't constitute the materials that are being used and construction.

  24. Today I received the back-ordered white Stretch button-up shirt with peplum J5558. Not my usual style, I tend to tapered/tailored waistlines. But I'm really liking this shirt. I may pass it by the Hubs, or maybe not for fear he'll try and talk me out of it.
I like the covered placket, the crisp fabric, and the mandarin collar. I ordered my usual Perfect Shirt size and think that's the right choice, as the shoulders fit well. Obviously large in the middle, as that is the style! I guess I'd wear with skinny pants to balance out the volume.- probably my navy or black Maddies, or the Elephant Marties. Of course with my black pencil skirt and heels if I want to go super-corporate. Am I talking myself into this shirt well enough?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I love the idea of a peplum but being long waisted I am always concerned about the proportions. You could also possibly wear it open, more like a light jacket, or closed with a longer fitted shirt underneath.

    2. I thought about wearing it open, it might work with a fitted t underneath.

    3. Woo! My most frequent pairing for that shirt is a pair of skinny jeans, as you say, to balance the volumn. I have also wore it a few times with an A-linen skirt to continue the volumn from waist down and cinched at the waist with a belt for added emphasis.

For items that I really love, I rarely consult my SO 😂😂😂. His comment about the Polartec half zip in pink almost turned me away from finalizing my purchase. His opening statement along the lines of resemblance to a fuzzy month old piglet turned to a mutter when I gave him my WTF face. 🌝😆😆

My husband says things like, "that looks comfortable." Or "that doesn't look comfortable." Absolutely no help. Although he did like the wide leg jeans which inspired me to wear them. He also liked a short skirt (really short) which ultimately each time I tried to wear it I took it off because it's really short, shorter than my usual mini length.

    5. @Namora: I like the a-line skirt idea too! Most of my skirts are that shape, tomorrow I will try out the combination. Nothing bad about a fuzzy piglet, with Babe and Wilbur for proof! I hope you have forgiven him...

@Suz Has - If my husband said "that looks comfortable" it would be Mr-speak for "dumpy". His opinion is actually really helpful, sometimes. Mine likes the wide leg pants too, he says it makes the backside look good.

    6. Yeah mine doesn't think like that. Comfortable means just that. I have to explain that's not always my priority.

  25. How's this for irony. I just got my red boots, I was thrilled they matched the online sale price during the big sale. The price tag on the box says $86.99 and stores were an additional 60 off! 😂 I paid more than double. I just messaged for a price adjustment. Let's see...

  27. @suz I use either Anastasia stuff typically, but Smashbox is another good option

  28. Angela Ahrendts is leaving Apple Inc. for personal and professional reasons after 5 years in April. If any of you remember she was the CEO of Burberry from 2006-2014 and made massive successful changes. I would like to see someone with her credentials running Jcrew. Now wouldn't this be nice.

    4. Apple paid her $26 million plus stock. Not too shabby. The $ equivalent of Mickey perhaps more. She would certainly be a better choice than the guys they’re floating around as potential candidates. Her track record is solid. Imagine her and the new design head from Finland. Perhaps the new dynamic duo??

  29. The algorithms are still driving 10% off codes to my email inbox. I temporarily removed all of my contents blockers and a few minutes later a code arrived. Problem is nothing on the website that I love:)

    2. Suz, at least you got your steal deal boots! Sounded like someone trying to hunt down an elusive Birkin or Kelly Bag only they paid more:)

    3. Lol, exactly! I'm not complaining. I have a wardrobe of new boots and didn't buy any pumps.

    4. @Suz, are you one of the Ismelda Marcos record holders of shoes and boots??😂

    5. Definitely not, although I say I could wear jeans and a black sweater or tank everyday and different shoes and I'd be perfectly fine. This season I did make a conscious effort to not buy heels or Glittery shoes. I have enough of both. I wear my red patent block heel pumps a lot so now instead I can wear my red patent boots.

    6. I’m not getting any codes either but I am getting daily emails from JC even though I opted out of their emails. One day it was an email with everything I had clicked on the day before (but not added to cart), another was on the current promo, yet another on things they thought I’d love (and I had already purchased a month ago). Didn’t they say last quarter that they were going to do more curated e-marketing? I wonder if this is it.

    7. @eeps, Positive about the curated marketing.Simply by clicking on items an email is sent out with the items I had just looked at. Clear your history and cache and see what comes up and whether or not you receive @10% off. I’m also left wondering if anyone is purchasing any of the new items.

  30. Posted a comment about Angela Ahrendts leaving Apple Inc. Coincidentally Melanie Trump was wearing a Burberry outfit last night. This is not a political statement by me, I thought she looked great. Now Jcrew bring back the sailor pants or something equivalent.

    1. Have you seen the officer patch pocket pant? They're really nice and I hope they came out in more colors. Right now only available in Blue and tan and I don't love either. The material is very sturdy and I like the fit better than the trouser jean because it's a true wide leg, not tight around the thigh.

    2. No I haven’t no store here anymore so I’m depending on feedback from you “supergirl”. I really trust your feedback. I llove a good khaki color in anything but like you not sure about the tan. Perhaps I will give them a try for the fit. Thanks appreciate it.

    3. They call it khaki, I just checked. Even though I tend to stay away from that color aside from in leopard print, it was a nice neutral.

  31. Thanks Suz, will give them a try . Just hope it isn’t a muddy khaki.

  32. Thanks to 6 days of NSF, I finally was able to pay the entirety of my credit card bills. All the pending charges and pending return credits have cleared! I've had to carry a balance since November due to the horrible cycle of ordering and returning and price adjustments and waiting for things to actually ship so they'd charge me. I feel like a new person.

  33. This just came in from a young VPS regarding the preview laistings I posted. I had wondered if the blouse had embellished flowers, a pin, clip or whatever. Here’s the answer below:

Looks like the flowers on the blouse are earrings - item L3806. They'll be available in the four colors pictured and are the Imogen stud earrings - looks like they'll be selling for $39.50.

The top is item L0598 - Slim perfect shirt in Liberty® Shepherdly Song selling for $98.00 and it doesn't appear to have a puffed sleeve after all.

Lastly, the next debut date is Tuesday February 19th which will be our first March debut!

    Well Ina we tried😂

  36. @shopalot, you’re welcome. I love the Dapper Dogs Print. Really cute, reminds me of Drake’s colors. Would love to see more Drake’s. I hope Jcrew isn’t finished collaborating with them. Almost tempted to purchase some of these fabrics next month when I’m in the U. K. for business then have someone I know put some tops or skirts together. How I wish that I could sew. I have such admiration for people that can . I failed royally when I was 12 and lost any enthusiasm I ever had:)

    1. I admit I had a teary moment in Liberty’s fabric room when I was there in December. The sight of all the unbelievably gorgeous fabrics made me so happy. Unfortunately I do not sew and didn’t buy any fabric as I know it would just sit in my house unused. I’ve got to find a tailor to make me some cute Liberty shirts. Would love to have another short sleeved blouse like the one I got at J Crew a few summers ago.
