"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Since most of the people are not fond with the current rollout. Lets do a throwback from the past at January 2009 new arrivals. From the link below tell me which shirts, sweaters, dresses, or skirts would you buy. I'm just really curious what people think of the old merchandise.

    1. Well there were ruffles then too but at least not on everything! I like the fact that the tops/sweaters all seem long enough and that there is variety to the skirt offerings.

    3. I don’t see much I’d want from that rollout either. But show me the 2007 offerings and yes, I’d want everything. In fact, I still have a few in my closet. :)

    4. Great idea! Thanks, morejcrew.
I like the look of the website so much better than the current appearance.
The styling was much more interesting, too.
I like a number of the skirts, the dotted ruffle cami. Loved, loved the Chunky Handknit Cardigan (wore mine until it fell apart). And the Ellora print shift.

    7. @maryeb - Oh, yes! That was J.Crew’s finest hour.

    8. @maryeb I still have the twinkle peep-toe heels and the clutch! I was going to donate them but tried them on again and they are so comfortable. Maybe I'll wear them again...

    9. I like the striped ruffle Victorian blouse with long sleeves. The rest are pretty meh.

    10. 2005-2007 was the golden age of J. Crew. My catalog would come in the mail and my heart would skip a little faster just looking at it. That was the really motivated Mickey and Jenna.

    11. That was a fun look through the old catalogues, thank you for posting! From the 2007 one I still have the silk taffeta parlour skirt (too big now but I can't part with it); the tartan crest tee (I remember stalking that one); the short puffer coat (actually 2 which have held up amazingly all these years). Makes me a bit sad looking back.

    12. Am I the only one that misses the more British academic styling such as argyle, tweed and houndstooth?

      Delete
    13. @jan - The tartan crest tee! I wore that one until it disintegrated. The same with the metallic striped tees from around the same time. I had that one in all three colors and I almost cried when they finally were so worn out that I had to toss them.

@Elizabeth - No, you're definitely not the only one.

    14. you are sooo not alone. I wore my JC suede bucket hat into a sort and was surrounded by people wanting to stroke it.

    15. Ah! Vanessa Lorenzo! She embodies the spirit of the J.Crew I love! Also miss Du Juan and Mona, who is now a model for a Danish fine jewelry company.

If J.Crew ever sells posters of its vintage covers, I would buy them all. Does anyone have a favorite cover? Mine is the one for February 2008.

    17. Second for the silk taffeta parlour skirt, except that I can't find mine. I must have felt the JCA telepathic waves, as I thought of that skirt today and hoped I hadn't given it away. I bought the most from J.Crew in the mid-late 2000s.

    18. I totally miss the British influence...houndstooth, Harris tweeds, and argyles in gorgeous colors...sigh!

I would totally buy the tartan crest tee today...so much cooler than the current word tees imo.

I also miss their printed knee length a-line skirts for spring and summer...so easy to wear. I still have a couple (sailboats and fish)...I wear them with a tee and flip flops or with a Jackie for work!!

    19. Sigh...both seasons linked above are full of classic treasures. Yes, totally miss all the British fabric/pattern influences, as well as beautiful, colorful abstract prints.

    20. had i been able to afford it back then I would say most of it, in fact some weren't my style back then but now I see it and I'm like yes yes yes!

    21. I have so many of those older items, not the ruffles so much, but a lot of the sweaters and skirts from that era. It would be fun to recreate those outfits on IG with the original items. If for no other reason, to demonstrate how timeless J Crew was and to show how quality matters. I love my Spring Dots Nicky Skirt, the grosgrain ribbon was the kind of touch you don't see anymore. The models actually looked happy, now they always seem to look like they are freezing to me.

  2. Thank you for posting. I would purchase nearly everything. Quality, brilliant colors, prints and timeless style.

  3. Vent: JCrew posted a pic of a "Sandy butt" on Instagram with some stupid caption. It was a string bikini totally riding up, like teenaged girls wear. I can't believe this is what they think we will go for.
Maybe I'm really modest (and was even as a teenaged girl) but I still wear two piece bathing suits—I just don't wear them up my bootie like a thong and try to actually prevent that from happening.
Thank goodness I have a few two piece suits with a little more bottom coverage from a few years ago.

    2. I read that J. Crew has a new swimwear line aimed at millenials. I am guessing that was from that line. Kind of dumb because millenials aren't teens or early 20's anymore

      Delete
    3. And someone that young is probably just going to buy cheap swimwear from F21 or Old Navy. That is what I did at that age.

    5. I agree JessF. Target is the go to swim shop for my daughter and her friends. While not as nice as the Jcrew suits, I have been pretty pleased with the Target suits for myself also.

      Delete
    6. For starters I've never been a huge fan of J. Crew swim. I actually preferred Victoria's Secret but they no longer make swimwear. In general I think J. Crew is trying to attract millennials and I think it's a mistake because Madewell is their brand. Maybe one of the reasons why JC numbers are down is because all the millennials moved to Madewell and abandoned JC. The other problem is that millennials don't like to shop. They like to travel, do brunch and go out and post IG pics about it.

      Delete
    7. I have so many J Crew bikinis! Absolutely love their swimwear. Certainly hope they aren't going forward completely with the cheaper/thinner smaller line of swimwear. I'm old now & can't wear it but I wouldn't want my behind hanging out even when I was young.

      Delete
    8. This just makes me sad but I suspected J.Crew was targeting millennials for some time now with the juvenile and sloppy designs they have been churning out season after season.

It just seems like a losing strategy. Let Madewell have the boozy, brunchy millenials. They're not shopping at J.Crew no matter how many sandy butt photos they post on Instagram.

      Delete
    9. I have read these comments and it seems people may not understand what a milenial is. They are not young 20's I am a millenial at age 33 and I have been shopping at J crew, Madewell is generally too college looking. Millenials are full fledged adults. Honestly the new swimsuit line would be better geared to the generation below millenials. Millenials aren't so young anymore unfortunately .

      Delete
    10. I wasn't happy to see the new playa line (cheaper quality I'm guessing and very skimpy). The online section shows models that look like teenagers. Not sure if they're targeting that young but IMO the suits are too skimpy for most people. I love Jcrew swimsuits, all my swim is from Jcrew and I don't mind paying higher for quality. I wouldn't have worn the playa line even in my twenties. If you look at the online section the models look almost naked which was the goal apparently but that's def not my Jcrew.

      Delete
    11. Exactly, RN. I’m a millenial too and I have 2 kids and a corporate job for the last 10 years. Even Madewell doesn’t work well with my lifestyle. I need swimsuits that have good coverage, thicker material, and more padded chest area :), all of which I find lacking in Jcrew swimsuit. Millenials are not young anymore, many are now mothers that don’t have “that body” and lifestyle anymore.

      Delete
    12. The millennial generational cohort is 18-35 years old. Big range and RN, yes, there are a lot of stereotypes and generalizations about this group that are not accurate.

Not sure who J Crew is targeting these days.

      Delete
    13. I feel like J Crew might actually be thinking of Generation Z (the older ones in their early-20s now) whenever they reference Millenials these days, though at the same time, I can't say I'm terribly shocked they haven't moved on with the terminology yet either.

      Delete

    1. Yes I emailed JC about the 25% off code and they said they could not provide a code, but offered to place an order for me, noting it only applied to SOME items. This is fine, but it doesn't address the underlying issue that some cardholders get codes and some don't. I didn't order anything anyway, as I don't have time for these games.
I liked the 50% off ALL sale much better!

      Delete
    2. Yeah, I didn't get a code either -maybe I didn't meet the minimum purchases last year (didn't get my xmas gift either....) so i'm just going to wait it out until they do a 30 or 40% because I know they will and this stuff will still be there.....

  5. Where did Gola sneakers go? It disappeared from the website last night, and still MIA right now.🙁

  6. I ordered two crewneck t-shirts in slub cotton (H1895) this morning. On the product page it said use code EXTRA50 for 50% off. Didn't double check before I checked out and noticed later that the 50% off was not applied. When I called CS, she said it isn't showing the 50% off code. I can still see it when I go to jcrew.com. Am I losing my mind? Can anyone else see the EXTRA50 in orange letters??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. OK, if I search for that item number, it does not show the EXTRA50. But if you're scrolling through the sale section, it definitely shows up and when you click through, it is on the product page. So weird. CS adjusted the price for me, which is the usual great customer service but I still felt funny asking because she couldn't see it!

      Delete
    2. It's confusing-- It does say to use EXTRA50 but unlike the past two weeks or so up until Monday, the 1/2-off code only applies to a very few "select" items.

  7. Wouldn’t it be nice if Jcrew had a waiting list for popbacks. You could add you item to a waiting list feature and then as popbacks come into stock they would be assigned to you before they were released to others. A morning email would alert you to say yes or no and then the item would either be on the way to you or put back in to stock for others. I’m sure this would be a logistics nightmare, but it sure would be nice. There is nothing more maddening than seeing your size ghosted out with a big x when the item showed all sizes sold out minutes before.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That sure would be great, Shopping Celle! I had to quickly place an order this morning for something that popped back. Had a shipping notice and everything earlier this month and the item never showed up. Then I called later to get the price adjusted to what it was the first time I ordered. Drives me crazy to see things online that were cancelled on me. GRRRR!!!

      Delete
    2. I definitely think if they cancel an item with the dreaded, wish we had enough email, you should get first dibs for a popback.

      Delete
    3. Yep. That would be amazing. Didn't there used to be a "wait list" back in the day? I vaguely remember during the days of hummingbirds and punk florals that a VPS suggested that every once in a while and then I would just find the item on my own ... I guess it didn't really work, ha!

      Delete
    4. I’ve put a lot of thought into that, and concluded that I wouldn’t want J.Crew to do it. Resellers would place requests for coveted items in all colors and sizes and everything would end up on ebay at a much higher price.

      Delete
    5. Do resellers even get good money for coveted items any more? Anytime I search something on eBay and see a ridiculously inflated price for these things I just bypass it. The quality doesn't warrant the high price. And most of the time those high priced reseller items seem to still be available months later.

      Delete
    6. @JessF - I have no idea whether they sell, but I see a lot of sale stuff on ebay, so it appears that the resellers are shopping the sale section.

      Delete
    7. I think a lot of the resellers were using the clearance stores. I’m not sure that the merchandise available at end of season bargain prices can compare with the sought after gems that were purchased there.

      Delete
    8. This "pop back" thing has drawn me in; I feel like one of those horror stories who goes to Las Vegas for a simple vacation and gets cleaned out. I'm refreshing the final sale page around the clock, and the few times that I've added a suddenly-appearing item of interest to the shopping cart only to find that it is NO LONGER AVAILABLE in the 40 seconds it takes to pay and actually hit the "submit payment" button have ratcheted up my resolve and determination to eleven. I'm embarrassed to disclose how many of the $5 shipping fees I've incurred over these past 3 weeks, and while I do get it from the company's point of view, it would be nice to have both a waiting list and a 10-minute courtesy hold once an item has been placed into the shopping cart.

      Delete
    9. My personal solution would be a stock alert app, but I'm not a developer :(

      Delete
    10. Alternatively, I wouldn't mind the option of signing up for a back-in-stock alert, especially if they're going to keep sending those wishlist updates anyway! Or at least don't remove sold out items from wishlists. I'd get it if they did so for items that they never ever intend to re-stock, but I've definitely had items on my wishlist removed, only for them to show up again later and for me to have to find out manually by accident because it wasn't re-added to my list.

  8. I don’t understand J crew’s suddenly dispersed merchandise games. I like Nordstrom rack that you have about 10 mins to work on your shopping before check out.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the rationale is that most items added to shopping bags are eventually abandoned, not purchased, so they prefer to let things go to the first one who actually completes the purchase.

      Delete
  9. I genuinely believe that JCrew managament has lost the plot! I do not understand why they don't get rid of all the 'old' sale items and quit with their pricing games which in my opinion is rubbishing the JCrew brand image.

Item H1895 has been in the sale section since July 2016. This item was on sale last week at a 50% discount of the current price and didn't budge. Why would a customer buy it now without the discount?

JCrew, it isn't really about your customers wanting deep discounts but rather wanting your business to maintain a brand positioning and perception especially in in your core market (North America) and growth markets (the rest of the world) by bringing back the quality!
There are plenty of stores on the high street which offer fast fashion and I understand the need to evolve but does JCrew really need to go the same direction as Zara or H&M while not altering the price accordingly.

I personally, think it is tacky to scroll through pages and pages of the same items from January to December. Just as I wouldn't expect to go to my local grocery store and see the same Apple on display but at different price points through out the year I don't expect to see items such as G3395 which has been the JCrew site since March 2017.

I don't even want to comment on the special VIP code nonsense. For the love of God how is that even decided? Is it a lottery or a person has to spend $x in the course of x period.

Over the past year shopping at JCrew has been like being in a bad relationship - you know it's not working and you should leave and get on with your life but you stick around because it is familiar and you hope, wish and pray that things will get back to how they used to be.

As for me, today January 31st marked my last purchase from the Crew - am a catholic and I am starting my lent abstinence early. Hopefully, by Easter Sunday I would have gotten over this unhealthy love!

  10. I experienced my first clearance sale issue this season: the Liberty of London pajamas arrived missing the bottoms. It was obvious to me before I even opened the plastic bag. :(

Also, it's not J.Crew's fault, but my mail carrier left a J.Crew package that's not mine. Do I really receive so many J.Crew packages that he just assumes they're all for me? The address is close by so I'll drop it off later today.

  14. In contrast to those feeling relief from the end of extra50 for most items, I wish it was still going and wonder if it will come back. I had been doing well limiting purchases this month (in my mind!!), but ordered 6 things earlier this week. Now I'm glad, as I plan to keep them all, and they had the extra sale applied. Wish the last few things I want could also be had for the extra discount now that my gift card balance is available. Wondering if I should just buy them, as they do have a place in my closet, but it's just so irritating knowing they were half price a few days ago. 15. Well, I'm going out with a bang to start #noshopfebruary

I returned the Cameron Slim Chino pant. The rise was just a little off and after trying them on a few times, decided even for $15 and change I didn't love them. I also returned the Subtle boatneck sweater. I'll see if the small works (ordered both sizes at the same time since they weren't final) but I'm not hopeful.

I decided I needed to give a few items a look at my store. I've been eyeing the lace pants even though I felt they aren't so "me" but they had the red in my size and I was trying other things on, so why not. I was seriously shocked at how flattering they actually are. I wasn't sure if I could deal with the red but remembered a shirt I love but haventworn enough, andknew they'd match. Happy I got them

Next I tried the wide leg camo pants again. I had given them a quick look awhile back and didn't even bring them home from my ship to store order. They only had a 00 in store and previously I tried the 0. They're a little tight but overall it's a more streamlined look because they fit well at the waist. I tried them a few ways and my favorite by far is with the camo sweater and a striped button down underneath, and pearls, of course, for a feminine touch. As Ina said, I'm fighting the fashion war, 😂 I think it's a great "hookup."

Finally I saw a pair of jeans I was eyeing online the Ogden wash, butthe style numbers don't match, so I'm not 💯 sure. Anyway, they're a lighter wash but not the lightest. They only had a size up from my usual toothpick size but they fit nicely. If I go to buy another pair of jeans someone please slap me.

and with that, iwill commence shopfreefebruary and Shop my closet.

    3. I also have the wide leg camo pants in 00 and found them a little snug, but over time, they seemed to stretch out a bit to a comfortable sort of snug (ie. they kept my stomach in without being uncomfortable, and no need for a belt ever, hopefully!).

      Delete
    4. Thank you, that's what I figured knowing that material a little.
I wore them in the house yesterday, and they already gave a little bit. I do like the waist as fitted asit is, I think on me it's more flattering that way, whereas the 0 wasn't much looser in the hips but the waist was not as tight.
One of the JCAs on Instagram (Tanya I think) called it a Camo Tuxedo 😂

  16. A few more items dropped off tonight,

Black mockneck tank, this is the ribbed one. I really like the fit but I'm pretty sure it's brown, not black, I got two sizes and they're the same color and compared to all the black I was wearing, they're brown. I will have to see in daylight, but if it's brown it really won't work for me, even at under $12.

Merino turtleneck with side slits. Pretty much fits as I expected. Wide and slouchy. I like that it's lightweight. It also stunk like perfume upon opening, I'm hoping it will air out. It's final sale but if it doesn't I will ask to exchange.

Everyday cashmere cardigan in black. I'm no cashmere expert but the weight seems nice enough. Fit doesn't work. XS is so tight across my chest that the buttons gape (or it's defective, I am not busty!) and the small is too loose. Great price but it's going back.

Finally, the subtle boatneck sweater in merino, size small. The XS fit odd but the small works better. I like the neckline (once I get it to sit right) especially because it works well with a chunky necklace. It's a little boxy but I can tuck it in to high waisted pants. It will work with a button down under it too, and it's a nice weight.

So that's all she wrote. I will have to make some returns but I'm going to do my best to have a #noshopfebruary.

    1. Speaking of color oddities, I saw the collared Tippi in store and it is definitely black and not navy. The color was even more apparent next to the navy Tippi with embroidered stars. I looked at both because I was offered a great price by CS due to a used Harlow I received, but I can't decide if either is me...

I'm pleasantly surprised to hear the small boatneck sweater worked.

Now what are we going to do all day without popback hunting? ;)

2 hours a day at the gym
      Keep my house picked up

      Read a book
      See clients

    3. Cheri, I was going to say THE SAME! That collared tippi is totally black. So, therefore, I want it,

    4. I would love to do any of those things from my desk in my office!!!! Argh, I swear I keep saying have to get back into the gym and get a routine before my 4 year old grows up and starts bringing home homework!

I'm going to order the black Tippi now and it does not count as #nsf. It is an exchange for the Harlow I'm sending back today.

  17. When is the best time to find pop backs?

    1. For the last two or so weeks (or that's what it feels like), I've generally been finding that the big flood of popbacks happens relatively consistently at around 4AM EST, if that helps! And then there seem to be sporadic updates over the course of the day afterwards.

  18. @Momjcrew, I've personally had the most luck super late at night or early in the morning. But I've also had the odd one at some random afternoon time. Good luck!

  19. @Namora and shopalot, your Scottish Terrier must have been quite the intellect:) they too, are a lovely breed. My dog Tango is so funny, every time I receive an order of jcrew items and unpack them, he is patiently on the floor and appears to critique what i am trying on:) Occasionally I will put one of my Drake's bandanas on him such as the turquoise with elephant motif.

    1. That bandana is absolutely gorgeous and made in the perfect size! I love it and am sure Tango looks dashing with it tied around his neck! 😘

  20. Really annoyed that the perfect fit tee is EXCLUDED FROM PROMO.

  21. Can someone explain the reasoning behind their final sale philosophy? I have spent an insane amount on final sale and pop backs over January that would have been doubly insane had it not been for 1/2 price off already-discounted final sale items. How, then, do they now offer the exact same final sale/closeout items without the 50% off? Doesn't the discount on final sale/closeout go up instead of down as time goes on...? Why would someone buy the men's pink Donegal sweater (love it, BTW) for $139 now when it was $69.50 during the entire month of January?

    1. Nobody...?

Items that for 3 weeks or so in January were "FINAL SALE--NO RETURNS" and they were 50% off of the discounted price; these very same items are no longer final sale and they're not 50% off. Weird!

    2. It is weird, but sometimes that happens. I bought (and returned) a pair of pants late last winter for $40 on sale, and now almost a year later they've popped back on occasion and have never been less (yesterday they Were $80) ...meanwhile other pants have dropped to $17...
