JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Jcrew has started a 24 hour only promo for 20% off your order and free shipping. Right now, it is working on 3rd party items and the signet bag (I tried it since I know this is a popular item that's rarely included in promos). The promo code is: SHOPNOW.

  2. Good morning, JCAs - if you've got rewards, you should be able to see them in your jcrew.com account - "J.Crew Card Rewards Status" on the bottom left. Rewards expire 4/30/17.

    3. Yes, they read our minds this time. Two pieces I wanted have gone on sale, and I got them both.

  3. Gorgeous Austrian Eyelet Collection dress from last summer is back in all sizes and included in promo. For some reason, you can't search it on J. Crew site, only from Google. I had been on backorder with this one since September, was shocked when it actually did ship yesterday. Searched for it because of promo this morning, then called to get adjustment. I feel like I won the J. crew lottery!

    1. So odd. I ordered it last summer and it's a gorgeous dress, but a smidge too big. I didn't return it because the smaller sizes were always sold out. I wonder if the powers that be would let me exchange it for a smaller size. Tags still on, etc.

    2. I just looked -- it's starting price is cheaper now, too. How odd.

    3. That was price on my backorder. When it popped back last year and I did the backorder, I thought it was less too. Wasn't it originally $398? Do you have a personal sopper to whom you can reach out? Might have better luck with that or a store associate than general CS. Good luck! Hope you get the size and price you want.

  4. Not exactly a styling question, but I have a large collection of extra buttons that come with the blazers. I hang on to them but don't recall ever having to actually use one. I am sure I have buttons for blazers that I don't even own some of the blazers anymore. Is it irrational of me to keep these buttons? What do other people do with them? I should just toss them, but shouldn't I keep them "just in case"?!

    1. Haha, I've had the same dilemma for ages, Toronto Modern! I currently have a small box of such buttons in all shapes and sizes, from many a retailer who has thoughtfully included them with a garment. I, too, hang onto them 'just in case', but I only recall one instance during which I actually had to use it. I think they're worth hanging onto, as they don't take up too much space, etc, but one thing i have started doing is labeling the item name on the white little envelopes that JC usually packs theirs in. Curious to hear if anyone else has thoughts about these!

    2. Yes, labeling is key! I keep mine, along with the wool samples the come with sweaters. Ironically, when I needed to repair a sweater last year, I couldn't find that sample (though I had 3 other yellows, doh!).

    3. Ha, so funny you posted this as I went through mine over the weekend and pulled them all out of their little paper pouches so I could actually see them if I ever need them. But I have SO many...for now I'm keeping them. I have a small sewing box and they're just stuck in there. I found my stash to come in handy the other day as I had a jewel that came off a jeweled collar tee and I needed to replace it!

    4. This is so funny to read about others in the same boat! Mine are in a little container and actually a couple months ago I went through it- there were buttons dating back easily 12-15 years. I've used buttons/thread from that box maybe twice in a decade - but I can't let go, because you just never know!

    5. Please don't throw them out! As an avid seamstress, I can tell you quality buttons are expensive! I keep all of mine and attach them to the fabric content label or inside/side of a garment when I cut the tags off. That way it's there on hand when I need it.

    6. I try to remember to attach them to any items I donate -- though I've often wondered if the staff at our local dress-for-success think I'm the crazy button lady. :)

    7. I seem to lose only buttons for which there is no replacement. The jar of extras sits at the ready all the while :)

  5. Any styling ideas for cropped lady jacket with gold buttons? I tried it with a turtleneck like the jcrew guide but my winter-tired mind is running out of ideas. Thanks!

    1. Try a google image search of black Chanel jackets. It's a good start for inspiration. Personally, I tried an odd mix that kind of worked for me, but I probably won't use it until Spring: the white frayed denim pencil skirt with black woo rights, the Rome destination tee, and the little black jacket. Dressing I down will work best for my lifestyle. Let us know what you try!

    2. That should have read 'black wool tights'! Woo rights is an odd outfit indeed.

  6. A few weeks ago, many of you provided really helpful color guidance when it comes to tights, so today I'm asking for some color guidance for a pair of tan pants (they're Campbell wool trousers from last winter). The color is great and I can match tops well with them, but I always feel like I'm wearing the wrong shoe-color with them.

Today I'm wearing some burgundy booties and I guess they look OK, but something feels 'off', as if the color jumps out too much. (Have had the same feeling with brown shoes.) What color do you guys like to wear with light tan pants? Thanks in advance.

    1. Do you have any leopard print shoes/booties? I wear my combo leopard/brown flats with my tan pants, and with cream as well.

    2. Thanks, shopgrrrl! I like the leopard print suggestion very much. I have leopard pumps & flats that will work in spring, though I still need to look for a closed shoe for winter. I just feel 'off', as if there is a glaring fashion mistake -- you know those outfits that you can't wait to take off? Oy, hahaha!

    3. I have a pair of Coach gold metallic loafers that I like to wear with light colored pants. Metallic shoes are my go-to when I don't know what color shoe to wear. Agree with shopgrrrl, leopard would look great, too.

    4. Ah yea, gold makes sense, too! I wore a gold belt so my gold flats would have been nice with these. I think my burgundy boots work, but I should have worn a lighter-colored top, rather than the navy I wore. Anywho, thanks very much for listening and for the suggestions! You guys are always so helpful and fun to discuss these things with! :-)

    5. The print and gold idea are great. @TM93, I sometimes find myself in that wrong shoe position, too. Thanks for bringing this up. I've been thinking I need a pair of loafers or driving mocs, and gold is probably the color I should keep an eye out for.

  7. What do JCAs think about the new men's athleisure line?
