J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Ebates 10% and huge update to sale section. Some further reductions, including the cropped fatigue jacket I ordered last week. No idea if it will work but price was reduced enough, plus ebates, it made sense to reorder.

    1. Ugh I had insomnia at 2 am and made a purchase. Woke up at 7 and saw the huge update, the Ebates and the markdowns. Now I need to get a PA and I may have accidentally/not accidentally bought three pop backs - all coats. Damn you JCrew!

  2. Anyone know if Nordstrom will price match the 40% off J Crew? I have a Nordstrom gift card . . .

    1. I’ve heard they will as long as the jcrew site has the item and size in stock they will!

  3. I have to vent a little - the website is acting up. Again!

I also have a question. I have the lodge coat in stadium cloth. Love the coat, but hate the fact that the lining is pilling and the stuffing is starting to come through the lining (like reviewers on the website have noted). I have worn it 19 times (I have Stylebook app so I can pull this number) since I bought it in February, and each wearing was very short (sitting in a car to and from work for my short drive to work). I am a little miffed about the lining but since I got it for $150 Canadian I can live with it, but it's a real shame because the exterior material seems very sturdy and the coat could probably go years other than the lining.

I must be a sucker because I noticed that the boucle version of the lodge coat is heavily reduced (about $110 Canadian). The reviews say that it pills on the exterior. Are there any JCAs with observations on the fit of the boucle vs the stadium cloth and the durability of the exterior of the boule coat?

    Thank you

    1. Just echoing your comments about the website!

Meanwhile reading your comments about the lodge coat - I have not worn mine much either but the lining also seems to shed onto clothes! I have the black and wore it with a white shirt that by the end of a short three hour flight was COVERED in navy specks! At least it did not color transfer but ugh!

    2. TM, I have the boucle lodge coat and it is starting to look a bit fuzzy. I've probably worn it a dozen times. That being said, it is extremely warm and I have found myself reaching for it on those colder days. I don't have the stadium cloth lodge coat so I can't compare in that sense but it does start to look worn fairly quickly.

    3. Thanks, Malvina and Anne

I am a sucker - I decided to try the coat because of the deadly combination of no final sale plus free shippingl I managed to place an order the coat despite the website glitches. But I somehow ended up with two identical orders and two coats are apparently coming to me. I thought about calling to try to cancel one of them, but I will just do a return (or two) if necessary.

I am buying this coat with the expectation that it will have limited life because of the fuzziness/pilling factor.

That makes me feel a little guilty because it seems so wasteful, but at the reduced price it makes economic sense. With all the talk about moving to less consumption, I would like to buy a really good coat that I love and that lasts a long time. But meeting both criteria is hard to achieve. I have bought higher priced items hoping for more longevity (less waste), but I have often been disappointed to find that an item that costs 4 times as much does not last 4 times as long.

  4. Could not resist the popbacks this morning but the website was acting odd AGAIN! Missed two items before I could check out. Still SO BUMMED I cannot seem to catch the tuxedo blazer in my size after almost a month searching! Finally, has anyone noticed that items no longer grey out in the cart but just disappear when they are not available? I HATE this!

Now a question: opinions on the scalloped cami from factory? I used to love the Carrie cami and still wear mine often but find that it truly GAPES in the chest for me, as someone who is extremely small - barely there in the bust. I'm hopeful that the adjustable straps may help a bit with this but am hesitant about the poly. How terrible is the quality? Ugh, jcrew, please go back to your good fabrics :(

  5. Overall, I am disappointed in the new arrivals. There's a few things I'll think about at lower prices but nothing is a "must have." The rollout seems almost entirely casual and it seemed like I was scrolling through a ton of bathing suits. Where's the workwear? Sorry, but I can't reconcile a lemon skirt and blazer as suiting. I do like the print in concept but it's personally not for me.

I did pick up a few sale items, the navy foulard easy pants, the fatigue jacket and the grey twist back tee. I also ordered the Madewell surplus jacket and one from ON too so we'll see which of the three I like the best (my money's on the one that cost the most but we'll see!) Neither of my field jackets fit and I'm looking for a casual weekend jacket but don't necessarily want to sub with a new field jacket.

    1. Hi Anne - I thought the ON field jacket was pretty nice and very similar to the Madewell Fleet Jacket. The Fleet has a couple of features I liked better (side entry pockets, snapped cuffs as opposed to elastic), but if I could've gotten the ON one in my size in pink, I would have.

Nothing for me in the new arrivals. I like the look of the tie-waist shirtdress, but reviews are saying that it runs 1-2 sizes small and I just don't feel like ordering a bunch of them to try. JC - if you had free returns (since you've closed a lot of your stores), I'd be more willing to try. Also, how long is this dress? They don't seem to have the length measurements online anymore. Again, not interested enough to contact CS. JC - you need to be making it easier for people to shop, not harder.

    2. silver_lining - thanks for the feedback on the jacket. The Fleet jacket is the one I wanted but I was too late to the game! I always struggle with getting my spring wishlist together while there's still snow on the ground. Hopefully I'll end up liking one of the three I ordered!

  6. new arrivals really...just another trickle as far as I can tell.
but then again the website will not load any items or show me sizes available. keeping my $$ again. so disappointed !!~

  7. For real?!? Who is in charge over there at JCrew this morning?? Yeah to the sale update and happy to have new, new arrivals but either I can't see anything or the item won't open. I see the sale section count going down quickly so clearly I am doing something wrong because somebody is buying something

    2. I consider this a sign...I will just return anything I buy anyway. so no telephone shopping for me.

  8. Madewell rolled out new items! Even if some of the stuff is not my style, I appreciate that Joyce and her team are doing a good job at designing clothes that is consistent to what their customers like. It’s cohesive! Why couldn’t J.Crew do that?

    1. They are quite nice. For the first time, I'm preferring the Madewell selection to J. Crew's! Too bad there's no promo yet.

    2. I see quite a few things I like in this roll out. Butterfly tops are interesting. They look really big, debating on ordering a size down to try.
      Also considering the Noelle slingbacks.

  9. Got an e-mail from Factory with an early access link to their new arrivals and a code for free expedited shipping. Not much there I'm loving, although that red anorak is kind of cute. I have such JC ennui!

  12. 3 of my 4 items arrived today from the buy 4/get 40% promo - the ivory drapey open front blazer, rue saint honore tee and the white tie waist peplum top. I ordered a 4 in the blazer (usually a 4/6_ and it is HUGE. I know it's supposed to be relaxed and the sleeves are pretty good but it's a bit drapey in front. I wouldn't mind a 2 to compare but...it's mysteriously gone from the website and the site still seems to be acting up. Of course. Not sure what will happen if I call. The peplum top is a no -ordered a small and shame on me for not paying attention that it wasn't shirting material (and glad I'm not the only one as a review states the same..._- it's a bulky cotton and the tie just adds a lot of bulk to the midsection. It's also a pain to get on and off without messing up the tie.

The Rue tee is different from the one I have - style number is the same but they must have done a second run for spring. The original was a distressed black and this is a darker grey - and less sheer than the original (the original wasn't sheer per se, just a thinner cotton). So, upon a second inspection, I like my original one better and it's not so bad even after shrinking it so I'll be returning the second one. I have the light wash button fly jeans on backorder, hoping those are a win and hoping I can track down the blazer in a smaller size.

    1. Disregard my comments on the blazer not being online, the website must just be acting up. Tried again and found it so I'll try the size 2 and see where I land.

  13. Tie waist cotton dress was on my wishlist and ordered once it was offered on sale. Fit is tts (size medium) and the fabric is exactly as pictured if you view it up close on your device. It’s a substantial cotton fabric that has structure and weight. I have curves and it skips them without being clingy. Belt ties easily and is a nice detail. An easy work dress that will travel well. Planning to wear as pictured with two tone loafer in black and white and a statement necklace.

  14. The gingham car coat popped back in my size and even with no additional markdowns on sale I'm giving it a go. Fingers crossed! The collection gray flannel pajama top is lovely but large. I reordered in my smaller numerical size. It will make a good layer over tops for work. Fabric was nice and had just a bit of stretch.

    1. I bought the car coat many months ago and love it. Good quality. Every time I wear it I receive comments on how cute it is. I thought it fit TTS.

  15. I posted some pics on IG @wearthislikethis.

Love the gingham pull on shorts. My smaller size fit fine. I know this lightweight cotton will give.
The cropped fatigue jacket doesn't work for my long narrow torso. I consider it more of a shirt.
Tie neck top in solid black is great but runs a little tight under the arms. I love this silhouette, so I hope to find the next size.

Forgot I also tried the studded stone drop earrings and they're ok...don't love the look on myself but they're not bad.

Today with the 40 off and ebates I also tried the 3" shorts with scallop hem. I love the coral with the black and white stripe top but I know that's not a great color for me. I ordered the fatigue and of course black. I loved the postcard print shorts with the scallop from last summer (they were on popback today) although I found they ran a little loose, so I ordered the two sizes to try.

  17. I love the petite cameron slim crop pants. they're very well made, with a flattering design and great proportions for petites. They're one of those basics, made to last, and adaptable to many styles.

  18. Nordstrom has new stripe colorways of the perfect fit tee! Yellow stripe (also online at J Crew) and flame stripe. Nordstrom had signs up in the J Crew section saying "Price Match - 40% off J Crew". There is also a long sleeve perfect fit shirt in the Liberty floral symphony print. I had to have it even though I also have the sleeveless top. It's such a gorgeous print.

  19. Tried the Factory Chambray ruffle tie-sleeve dress. Although I’m not into fancy sleeves I do love chambray dresses and was drawn to this one as it has a bit of shape to it. Fit is TTS. Unfortunately this was well above my knees (5’9”), way too short for me for day-to-day wear.

  20. I use to go to the J Crew website and see lots of things I loved and had to buy. Now, I'm lucky to find anything. The design team needs to re-evaluate their strategy before it's too late.
