Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  3. A lot of good sales going on now:
DVF is running 20pct off sale and final sale items. Love her dresses-every woman should have a wrap dress in their closet!

Shopbop also has a lot of sale items and don't forget the Nordstrom anniversary sale is still going on!

  5. Anyone own Jack Spade bags? I'm looking for a new school bag that is a little rugged. I'm particularly interested in the Work Twill Swiss Brief. Any info on this brand will be helpful, thanks!

    1. Momoberry, I have a Jack Spade Square Briefcase (no longer made) and the twill has held up really well. I love the functionality of the bag. It's nicely lined and the straps are very sturdy. My only beef was that the proportions were generally built for a guy, so I was "sized out" of their briefcases and backpacks. The square brief I had was one of the smaller, commuter bags.

My DH had the Jack Spade Diaper messenger when the kids were babies and that held up nicely also (I actually think he uses it for a commuting bag sometimes!). My kids are 8 and 10, BTW ;)

eBags used to carry the line, but I see that they no longer do. Zappos still carries them, but I'm not sure if they are eligible for any sale prices.

    2. Forgot to add that the bags are heavy though..just a thought if you plan on adding books/laptop, etc.

    3. Thank you! I'll give them a try as their bags look great and seem sturdy :)

  6. I stopped in Talbots yesterday after banishing them to retail exile for the past year. I was really peeved that after such a great start in 2010 towards a more updated aesthetic, they cowed to the Dusty Ovary Bunch and returned to a low-rent country club look.

Not much has changed in terms of the merchandise, but at least the shop interiors are getting a facelift.

  7. I picked this sweater up from BR a few weeks ago in a black/white color and really love the fit. Fabric held up beautifully through its first washing. Still available online in purple and might be in store as well.

  8. I really love these shorts from Ann Taylor http://www.anntaylor.com/ann/product/AT-Weddings-Events/AT-Honeymoon/Crosshatch-Print-Shorts/289020?colorExplode=false&skuId=11769637&catid=cata000037&productPageType=search&defaultColor=6600

I will style them like the J Crew Tiki print shorts, which it seems a lot of JCAs have been crushing on. I find J Crew shorts don't fit me well -- they're cut rather straight and I'm curvier. These fit nicely and are a teeny bit longer as well.

  9. Raina Cox,

I bought a ton from Talbots from 2010-2011. I have only bought one great black lace blazer in 2012, a pair of earrings and a couple of clutches. I got really excited too. I even got to Black status and got their charge card. I still get free shipping and perks online but I think that will all expire this fall b/c I don't buy like I used to!

    1. I'm in exactly the same boat. I think my black status will end the fall too. I bought quite a bit for awhile - good quality stuff - especially good for work items. The store in my town closed just over a year ago so I haven't been buying as much.

  10. Just read this online:

The Joe Fresh brand announced the opening of almost 700 dedicated Joe Fresh shops within the newly renovated JCPenney stores across the U.S. Rolling out in April 2013, the shops, designed by the Joe Fresh team, will range from approximately 1,000 to 2,500 sq. ft., and will debut with women's apparel. Joe Fresh products will also be available on line at jcp.com. The partnership will provide the Joe Fresh brand, Canada's largest apparel brand, with significant expanded U.S. national brand exposure, reaching millions of new customers and complementing the well-received stand-alone stores in the New York area.

    Very excited to hear this!

    1. Joe Fresh is doing an excellent job of knocking off J. Crew not to mention other brands. I was in the kids section at Joe Fresh last week, and their new line-up of Paris-themed tees is an incredibly good knock-off or a Paris t-shirt that I bought for my daughter from Crewcuts last year. (Not to mention the prices are crazy - the Joe Fresh tees are going for $12 CA regular price, while the Crewcuts tee was $34.50 U.S. and I had to wait until the end of season to get it half price). Also, they are carrying a polka dot button down shirt that is a pretty good approximation of the J. Crew polka dot oxford shirt - the Joe Fresh shirt is $19.

  11. Just read an article that Talbots could no longer be in business by 2013; guess they have lost money every year for the past 5 years and a buy out is not coming through--yet.

    1. I live near a Talbots Outlet and they are definitely going out of business. They're liquidating all their merch.

    2. Should clarify. I mean the Outlet store is going out of business. Not Talbots as a whole - at least not as far as I know, lol!

    3. This article was abt the whole company.

    4. A new Talbots Outlet is opening in my local outlet mall in a couple of weeks. Hmmm...

  12. Received the Old Navy Heart Sweaters (both grey and blue colors) and love them both! I had a coupon for 35% off and with my BR card had free shipping. ~$17/sweater is much more comfortable for my wallet than JC's $88 (and the crooked heart kind of annoys me anyway)! Ordered my usual size (M) and it's flattering and not over-sized/snug at all.

  17. The heart sweaters and polka dot sweaters arrived in Old Navy Stores on Thursday. They run true to size. Have white with black polka dots, dark khaki with black polka dots and kelly green with navy polka dots. They also had the heart sweaters in two colors. They also had a chambray polka dot shirt that was very similar to JCrew for $24.97.
