"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I really dislike the styling in so many outfits from the fall lookbook. Lots of "hot messes."

  2. Popbacks! They're driving me crazy. It has to be intentional on J Crew's part because any company with such poor track of their inventory could not have lasted this long. It's very confusing to know when to buy something. It's like some sort of a mind game.

And buttons, J Crew! I think they must order their buttons in bulk from Big Lots. The buttons generally look so cheap and out of place. I don't know how many tops I've liked but passed on because there are random plastic anchor buttons here and there.

  3. Sizing! It is all over the place , I ordered cords which are nowhere close to the measurements customer service gave me. I also have two Tippis, I left them in my drawer too long alas, both are xtra small but yet one is baggy and the other looks utterly obscene on. This really needs to be tightened up.

    1. I agree! I have ordered many identical things in different colors in the same size and some come in right, some a little tight and some a little loose. I mean, geez guys its the same item in the same size. I will never buy anything that is even semi-fitted in final sale that cannot be returned because of this problem. They need to tighten up

    2. Exactly why I don't buy final sale anymore!

    3. I have a friend who works for a major clothing company, and after a season of horrendous inconsistency in sizing a few years back, I complained to her about it. She told me that they started stacking more layers of fabric during the cutting process, I guess as a streamlining or cost-cutting measure. Obviously, the more layers you have, the least accurate each piece will be cut... leading to inconsistency within 1 size. I guess I was naive to think that Jcrew would be "above" this technique. I have the feeling they must have started stacking fabric too (or increasing the number of layers). Unfortunately this will probably be a trend for clothing manufacturing in general.

    2. I agree; I only liked 2 things from the whole catalog and overall the styling and the color palette to me were blah. :(

  5. Anyone else regularly hear "you're so dressed up" with a petty undertone of "why are you so dressed up?"? Yes, I like to dress smartly, I wear mostly dresses or skirts, it's what I prefer. I think I'm going to start carrying around a spare glove and when people make this comment to me, glove-slap!

    1. Barbabelle: I wrote a little something about the 'dressed up' comments in this post back in March.

    2. Meh, I just ignore people who make comments like that. I think they don't like a visual reminder that they, too, could have left the house looking ten times better with maybe two times the effort. And anyone who thinks that sweatpants are more comfortable than a little cotton shift dress is a nutbag.

      Delete
    3. Ditto Whitney. They are just jealous, but I love the glove idea. I just smile and ignore. It actually makes me smile to know that it's eating them up inside.

      Delete
    4. Spot on, Whitney! There should be no shame in dressing nicely and taking pride in your appearance. There are fab clothes at all price points these days--no excuses in my book. People who make these comments are just projecting their own shame for not dressing better, onto others that do. Rude rude rude!

      Delete
    5. Decades ago people would dress smart even if only to do grocery shopping. I wished it wasn't so looked down upon nowadays. To me it makes no sense!

      Delete
    6. I get that all the time too....jealous maybe?

    7. Barbabelle, LMAO! I need one of those gloves as well. So useful & to the point without need for words!

    9. Here in the south that's all I wear in the summer, skirts and dresses, with the heat and humidity its just more comfortable if anything.

  6. I think that the great styles are worthy of great fabrication. I don't mind competitive pricing on well made pieces, but I feel uneasy when I see high prices for lesser quality. I also miss leather lining in shoes.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. I don't want to pay 400 for a wool/poly blend. And I miss the leather lining too...I remember a beautiful pair of flats from 2004 (maybe 2005?) that were leather lined. The good old days.

      Delete
    2. Agree; the preponderance of rayon blends in the past few seasons has really chapped my behind. For me it's not just a quality issue, though, it's a practical issue -- I can't bear synthetic fabrics, especially in the summer. My skin can't breathe, arrgghh. And the prices on the rayon items....woof! Well-executed considering the fabrics used, but not worth the prices.

      Delete
  7. Thank you, Barbabelle for commenting on this!
Yes, and it is indeed the "petty" undertone that I find so annoying/demoralizing. Oh, the things I am thinking while biting my tongue.
Fabulous Florida Mommy has some terrific quotes on her blog and my favorite is "Being Well Dressed is a Beautiful Form of Politeness." Especially in this hot weather when my eyes are assaulted daily, I mumble this quote a lot.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Snarky here, but I also dislike the undertone. I don't say anything when someone is out in their workout clothes, when they haven't worked out. Just because it is Lululemon, doesn't make it non-athletic wear. I love wearing skirts and great sandals. I look better, feel better, am better. Plus, skirts are great in the heat.

      Delete
  8. Wondering why the tie neck top in dot is $118 for silk, where the solid tie neck top is $110 for rayon. Really J.Crew? Either buck up and charge the $8 more to make the solid top out of a legit fabric, or charge the proper price for it: approximately $20, which is what a similar item would be priced at Forever21. Sometimes their pricing makes me think they are delusional.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed! I prefer the solid top to the polka print, and would be willing to pay $118 if it was in silk, but not that much for rayon.

  9. I know this has been previously stated on the post on the August Style Guide, but I have to see this recent issue is THE WORST. I keep studying it, thinking that something major is going to pop out at me and I'm going to think, "OMG. I LOVE THIS!" It's SO not happening. I am really surprised at the lack of fab jewelry (I am a jewel whore), and the colors are so blah. Not to mention everything is a carbon copy of seasons past. Really, how many Tippi sweaters does one need?

Surprised at all the navy/white color combos. Isn't that totally a spring color combination?

  10. I really wish j.crew would STOP making 500 pencil skirts. I don't know anyone who slips on a pencil skirt to run errands on the weekends or for a cook-out. Its too hot in the south to be in a fitted skirt running around...at least for me! They have so many cute things right now and no cute a-line skirts. All I want to wear in the summer are a-line skirts and cute tanks and tees...j.crew used to be the best place to find those items, but I'm at a loss as to why they refuse to make a-line skirts. No bell, not pencil, not maxi, or pleated...just a-line...its not that hard!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I prefer the a line skirts too... Wish they'd make a few more... I can only deal with so many pencil skirts.

      Delete
    2. I love the pencil skirts! To me, they are very flattering and can be worn with sandals, ballet flats, tanks, tees, and light sweaters. Plus I love all the choices J Crew gives us, stripes, geometric s, florals, paisleys, and the most fabulous colors of any retailer!

      Delete
    3. I have to hem all the pencil skirts and they look fine on me with heels and a fitted button down, but at only 5'5" and a size 10, they aren't the most flattering shape on me. A-line tends to flatter more figures than pencil, so I'm just surprised that j.crew and a lot of other retailers are pushing the pencil as their dominant shape.

      Delete
    4. I would be happy if they'd consider making their super-cute minis in a longer knee-length. :{ More options please J.Crew!

      Delete
    5. I LOVE pencil skirts, and they are more flattering on me than a-line, but I too wish J.Crew would make more a-line skirts! Why on earth won't they? I like them mostly because they are way more comfortable than pencil skirts :)

I recently purchased several from Land's End and bought the front pleat skirt on popback... but if J.Crew they would make some gorgeous plain and printed a-line skirts.

      Delete
    6. I'm in the love-pencil-skirts camp -- I feel too old to wear A-line without feeling like a little girl. :( And believe me, I've tried. About as far as I can go is a really slight a-line silhouette, like the double-serge wool flair skirt from last year.

As long as they keep making the pencil skirts in such fabu prints and colors, I'll keep buying them, lol.

My only gripe is that I'd really prefer the No. 2 skirt to be a little shorter. Like knee-length. I know why it's not, and once in a while I get a petite one to addess that, but I still preferred them when they were just maybe 2 inches shorter.

      Delete
    7. I agree, Elaine -- I like the No. 2 from a year or so ago when it was a bit shorter. But I'm short, so I kind of understand that it's easier for me to hem than leave all the tall girls out.

I am also in the Love All The Pencil Skirts (and buys too many - refuse to say how many live in my closet) Camp, but certainly a couple of a-line skirts per season couldn't hurt. I personally look a little cutesy in an a-line skirt, which is fine for the weekend, but I have a hard time pulling them off at work and still looking like a Serious Adult.

Also hate the messy hair on the web/in the catalog. Maybe I'm just old (you kids get off my lawn!) but it makes me want to lecture the models about proper grooming.

      Delete
    8. Oh I'm only 5 ft 4 but i'd like them to be a little longer, hitting just below the knee.

    9. I prefer a line or full skirts. I have a closet full and I get them in england every trip I make. So much more comfortable and fun to wear in my opinion

  11. I've had my eye on the CeCe suede ballet flats in sapphire blue for quite a while. Last week they disappeared from my shopping cart. Thought maybe they moved the color to final sale. Can't find them anywhere on the site! They seem to have been replaced by the byzantine blue. They seem pretty close, so I thought maybe they just renamed the color. A SA from my store called to asked about the MIA sapphire color. The person on the phone told her they "pulled the color" and will be reintroducing it this fall. Why bother if they already have the byzantine blue??? It's just annoying and weird! I don't buy the explanation. I suppose byzantine will be OK, but it seems really deep. The sapphire was a tad bit lighter. Stalking the sale page hoping they'll pop up.

    1. I bought these in orange leather and have only worn them twice, and the color has worn off the heels on both shoes in 2 places, and I got a ding in the toe. That's it for me and Cece, we're done. :( As always, YMMV.

  13. Agreed on the sizing issues. Last night my twin daughters tried on 4 pairs of JC ballet flats in size 4 - some were huge and some were way too tight. Not confidence inspiring! (Although they are gorgeous - can't find the style anyplace else...)

  14. Quality of construction & durability are coming in to serious question for me. A Perfect Buttondown that has been washed 3 times is now tearing at the seams. I've had items from H&M last longer, so I'm having trouble understanding why am I paying such an upcharge for an item at Jcrew that is of less quality than "disposable" clothing retailers like H&M, F21 etc?

  15. I tried on the pompom jacquard collection capri yesterday (in store $28 ) They wre regular around $500 Canadian dollars. The material was interesting , different and very reminisent of the 50"s. They were lined but I found them to be of mediocre quality in workmanship. They were worth the sale price of but FP not in your life. If this is collection then our reg merchandise is worth what ? I also found many of the tops this season to again be of poor quality...many were only thin t-shirt material and featherlight well... I think will not last in the long run. Just saying.....Why can I now get the sdyneys and the via flats for $22...not selling at full price i'm sure.
I also think they should not be having such a bottom price sale in store and not be offering at least 50% off sale online as well. Those online only shoppers are being totally snubbed.

  16. The "Why are YOU so dressed up!" comments used to bug me. Sometimes the little voice in my head says "why are you such a slop?" HA! I just smile or say thank you when I'm actually complimented. But I don't pay much attention to other people. If women (and men) aren't smart enough to realize that looking your best makes you feel good, then that's their loss. Looking nice and dressing nice makes my everyday life so much more fun and pleasant. Look we all have to do boring stuff like grocery shopping and errands. Why not do those wearing something pretty and feeling good? People who don't understand this are really missing out. I get the nicest customer service and assistance when I look nice. And that makes me happy.

  17. August Style Guide. The hair. What is that ish about?

    * We're obsessed with the messy 'do's that our models are sporting in this month's style guide! Want to know how to get the look? Our stylists drove them to the beach for the day and left them there, forcing them to hitch a ride back to the studio on a produce truck. We just added a little hairspray for extra volume and to mask the smell of diesel fumes!

  18. HEE.....the comment about assaulted eyes in hot weather made me laugh. My husband hates when the weather turns to the warm side. All the near public nudity really gets on his nerves. We'll be driving and he'll says...."oh...now THAT'S a look!". I'm amazed at what people will wear in public when it gets hot! My eyes....My eyes!!! 2. You have to inspect everything you get very closely. This tee had no price tag and looked a little shopworn. Then I checked the sleeves and noticed the hole in the armpit. Surprise!

Yes, my dove tee developed a hole after one wash/wear. The v neck part of my new vintage cotton tee is starting to tear too. When will I learn?

  21. I'm bummed about this year's fall look book items. When the fall 2011 look book came out I was excited about nearly all of it, and bought 3 pieces that I still have and love. This year, there were only two things that caught my eye--the coat in look 7 and the skirt in look 20. I emailed to get more detail and maybe even consider pre-ordering... well, the coat is 100% wool, which I like, but it is 1200 DOLLARS! The skirt is wool/poly blend, which irritates me (I prefer 100% wool) and it is $425. Yikes! Disappointing!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For those prices, I'd be shopping elsewhere. That's crazy! I'm thinking you could get a decent Burberry coat for $1200, no?

      Delete
    2. Good point JRuby! My parents gifted me a Burberry coat nearly 6 years ago and it still looks great! No missing buttons or split seams. The quality is comusurate with the price, unlike Jcrew of late.

  22. A search on 'poly' on JC's site returns 143 results. Some are accessories but most are clothing.

A search on 'poly' on Madewell's site returns 67 results. Again, some are accessories but most are clothing.

I miss the capability of searching by price on JCrew's website.

    1. I had this happen to me while on a business trip in the middle of a meeting. I know I got it on sale for under $30, but come on J.Crew, I'm a 0 (and probably should have taken a 00 in that skirt) so it wasn't straining and it was the first time I was wearing it. Thankfully it was an easy fix but I would not have been happy had I paid full price. The quality at J.Crew has definitely been declining.

    2. Happened to mine on first wear too. Annoying and I sized up too!

    3. Happened to me in my cotton No. 2 as well, which is not very fitted on me at all. I heard the first rip when I got into my car. Heard the second rip when I got out and had to make it through the work day with a huge rip along my skirt seam. Unbelievable.

  24. I've had lots of luck with my online VPS. He has found everything I've wanted and very quickly. Why is it that the CA's instore aren't trained to offer to find items or to offer the red phone to order? It seems I have to ask every time to have them look for items and to use the red phone to order. I find it puzzling. It feels like they are discouraging me from buying.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I hear you on the lack of willingness to order items. I'm generally frustrated with the VPS experience in store, also in CA. I just feel like it's been very hard to start that relationship. I HAD met one that I really liked, but she was totally unwilling to help me put together looks for work and told me I'd have to go to another store for that (where I don't like the VPS). Really? A VPS can't handle dressing customers for a business casual (emphasis on casual) office? Really?

I've been thinking of getting an online VPS, but it just seems ridic when I live so close to no less than 3 b&m stores.

  25. I too considered pre-ordering an item-but didn't when I wasn't able to get any significant details such as fabric content , color options from a PS whose answers were at the very least vague or she simply couldn't tell me on an item that was $950! Ridiculous!

  26. J. CrewJD....I bought both colors of the Front Pleated skirt. I love them! I wish JC would make more skirts using this style. I also love the A-Line wool skirts I bought last winter. It's nice to have more variety than just the pencil.

  27. So I was one of the lucky ones to get a $50 gc with PS appt. The offer ends on the 31st. A few weeks ago, I emailed and after three days heard back from the PS. She wanted to set up the appt. for the 30th so I could try the new lines...okay, I like to shop on sale, but figured this would be a fun way to get a want list going. Then the mall had roof damage during a downpour and partially flooded last week and JC just opened back today. I still have not confirmed a time with the PS and I really doubt I'll hear back since there is so much going on at the store and mall. >sigh<

  28. Enough with the washed out photos online! I get that it might look more stylized or whatever, but sometimes it is washed out to the point where it's hard to make out the details of the item. And then it arrives and the color is a surprise!

    1. Have to agree with this one. The blinding white background and powerful flash they use to photograph the models really does not give customers a good idea of what the true colour is. I wish they would go back to the neutral beige background they had before, or at least provide a card with accurate colour swatches with the catalog.

      Delete
    2. I was just about the write this one up-it drives me nuts that I cannot accurately see any colors. White especially-I have to change to a different color to see the outline and some details. Forget it if the items only available in white, it just blends right in. And this is one several monitored that are calibrated.

    3. I was not impressed with women's portion of the catalog, no background very boring. The men's however was shot in an old building and was great...I felt like I was actually seeing items IRL.

  30. I can understand that some JCAs dislike rayon. It's true that it's not a fabric that breathe the best. But I think in cooler weather it can be a good fabric. It drapes well and is easy to wash. Are rayon and viscose the same thing? If so, I have had many dresses and skirts that I loved that used this fabric, some of which I bought in Europe, where I found that viscose was used more heavily. I'm no chemist but it seems that rayon is neither a true "synthetic" nor a true "natural" fabric, but a "semi-synthetic." I guess that helps to make it less humble in my mind :)

  34. I'm irritated about the slow response to emails. I sent a we will find it request and they could not find the item but they made some suggestions with the request to contact them back if I have questions. Well I responded two days ago and still no response. Nice.

  35. Enjoying reading all the responses to “you’re so dressed up.” Part of what I find humorous about it is that it’s not like it’s hard labor. Yesterday (when I got three of those comments, prompting today’s post), I wore a sheath, earrings & brooch, and heels. Took me five minutes. I’d wager one of the women who made a comment to me, who was wearing shorts, button-up, cardigan and buckled sandals didn’t get dressed that quickly.

And now allow me to join in venting about the August catalogue: Quelle disaster. How many months in a row now have we seen the same look: Overexposed face, birds-nest hair, bright coral lipstick, jenna glasses & mouthes hanging open - 10 months? 12? 18? So contrived. I think my favorite item is on p. 26, the “Collection satin skirt” ... in polyester. For $250. Like we couldn’t find the same thing in the Kardashian Kollection for a kool $25, or H & M, or probably just about anywhere.

Into the recycling bin it goes. Soon to be joined by the three latest boxes bearing goods from Nordie’s Anniversary sale.

    4. pathos = nailed it!

Jcrew is all about fast fashion now. It's like a train wreck in slow motion if you think of the 50% sales and prices that Canadians are getting right now. Are they making any money on those sales? If so, what the heck is the markup on the original price and why would any of us pay that after seeing those reductions?! MD was supposed to be training us to buy at full price. How's that working for ya?

  36. Barbabelle....God, how many times have I thought the same thing? I' be wearing a pair of cotton capris, a tee, some jools and flats and THAT'S dressed up for these people! It's the same amount of clothes..a bottom, a top, shoes, come on! It's just as easy to put on a pair of sweatpants as to put on a pair of cotton pants. Today I'm going out in my sequin anchor top AND a skirt...wonder how disturbing that will be to the general public. About the catalog....when will the "hipster" look be over? The skinny models in oversized clothing with those dumb Poindexter glasses and the bedhead hair. And if the stylist can't come up with a top that actually matches a pencil skirt they throw on a completely unrelated striped shirt, like that's the answer to every styling conundrum. I look at those and think "if I did that people wouldn't think I was cool, they would think I got dressed in the dark".

  37. This is sort of a random funny vent. I was doing live chat to get some measurements when I stepped away from the computer (and of course forgot I was chatting). Anyway when I came back I found the following from the chat person (approximate)
Chat: The measurements for the size XS are.... etc.
    Chat: Are you still there?
Chat: That type of language is not permissible on live chat. If you continue to use improper messaging I will be forced to end our session.
Chat: I have not heard from you, have a nice day!

I have NO IDEA why this person thought I was swearing at them over my computer. I hadn't typed anything which you could clearly see! Maybe there's a ghost in the machine leaking swear words into the live chat feature....... maybe it is related to the fact that you can almost never access the live chat feature except for those time when you don't need it but it continues to pop up making you late to check out and forcing you to lose that coveted popback.

    Just a thought.

  38. The "you are so dressed up!" comments make me laugh. I get that all the time, in fact, I was told I was very "fancy" today in the elevator.

What am I wearing? A black cotton long no. 2 pencil skirt, vintage cotton short-sleeve t-shirt in army green, a necklace, and a pair of heeled sandals. Fancy? Really? Honey, you've got to be kidding me, this is NOT fancy.

  39. Is look number 24 in the lookbook a cruel joke?

  41. Just got my Oasis Green Edie Attache' and the Retro Jade Tippi sweater from my last order. I was worried the green Edie would be too spring looking, but it's actually even a darker green than the Kelly Green Tippi sweater. The same tone, but darker. I think I can use it year around. And for $119.00 I'm not complaining. It looks to be new...not returned. I don't see any scratches or anything. The Retro Jade Tippi is turquoise. Jade is green, at least I always thought it was. This sweater is turquoise. But very pretty. I'm going to see if it looks nice with the abstract floral no. 2 skirt which I'm interested in.

  42. How do I get to be a lucky one and receive the gift card in my catalog? I don't have a JCREW credit card, but I certainly spend $$$ there!

Disappointed in the latest jewelry also, with the exception of the golden weave necklace/bracelet and the green bubble necklace ... and the bubble earrings!

  43. OT but here's an interesting post on J.Crew's 770 blog on how to make a "topknot" aka "bird's nest" out of a model's hair: http://jcrew.tumblr.com/
I'm really disliking J.Crew's choice in hair and makeup lately.

  44. Sizing inconsistencies really bug me. I ordered two pencil skirts in the same size, one fits, the other is significantly too big. I'd now have to pay shipping to get a smaller size in that second skirt. And maybe a smaller size won't work because the oversize was a mistake in production not a standard in that particular skirt. Screw it, I'm just returning both and not rebuying.

Tabs, I'm with you on the pencil skirts, by the way. I think just at the bottom of the knee cap or slightly below knee is perfect, uber sexy and very sophisticated.

  46. Have we ragged on the new interior tags yet? 'Cause they're awful! The size is printed on a little piece of grosgrain ribbon and the numbers are absolutely teeny tiny. I could barely make out the numbers and had to hold the tag under the light at an angle (HA!). Why did they change the tags? Is this another cost-cutting measure?

Also, even though the new items were all out at my B&M, nothing said "fall" to me. More like "endless summer". Where's the tweed, herringbone, jewel tones?

    1. A lot of the tags are offensive to my sensitive skin, especially on the bottoms. The corners scratch my back so annoyingly, I have to take most of them out.

  48. I have almost all the colors in the Cafe Capris and they fit great, however, I purchased the khaki ones and they are HUGE. So much material around the hips and crotch. I look like I'm in my boyfriends pants, they're terrible. I cannot stand unreliable sizing. They're final sale of course. They are not wearable, I look ridiculous.

  49. blondefatale, I'm curious, are the item or style # on your khaki capris different from the # of the capris you have in other colors.

In the final sale section, I noticed there are two different cafe capri item #'s and pages, but the item descriptions are exactly the same.

These style numbers look like older styles:
    Regular: item 34629
    Petite: item 44011
    Tall: item 44012

These style numbers look like newer styles:
    Regular: item 57064
    Petite: item 62782
    Tall: item 62783

If you bought the older style in khaki, that could explain the bad fit. If that's the case, you can call cs & tell them you didn't realize there were two different item #, etc.

  50. Ok, I checked and they are the 62782 style. They're so sacky and unshapely I'm embarassed to even be wearing them.
