J.Crew's August 2012 Catalog {take a look!}

A big "thanks!" to Fabulous Florida Mommy, of the amazing Fabulous Florida Mommy blog, who scanned the Women’s *and* Men’s sections of the August 2012 catalog. Yeah, that's right! Both Women and Men. Woot, woot!

To view the catalog in an easy-to-view slideshow, check out her "J.Crew August 2012 Catalog" post.

As some of you mentioned in the "J.Crew Updates Website with New Arrivals!" post, J.Crew is not releasing their catalog online until next week. Oddly enough, I was told the same thing by an in-store associate for the paper version too (to coincide when new arrivals hit the floor).

What are your thoughts on the latest catalog? Do you like the styles displayed on the pages? Anything you love or question? Please share! :)

  1. Weird, mine came in the mail today. No point in holding back on the online version and releasing in store if you're going to mail them out, is there?

  2. Mine came in the mail today too. I adore polka dots, so I am loving a lot of the fall stuff, but I really wanted to see more. The blazer colors were a little disappointing, as were the pencil skirt colors (except for retro jade); I guess I was hoping for something more rich. Still, I like what I see so far so I am looking forward to more in the coming weeks.

  3. Mine also came in the mail today. I can't put my finger on what I don't like about it... it seems kind of juvenile? There have been much better August catalogs (Boston '07, East of Eden, etc.) The colors are too springy for me - or maybe I'm just not into neon.

  4. Looks like I won't be purchasing much as all the pieces I liked way out of my price range. $600 for a skirt and $600 for pants??? Are these magic pants?

  6. I love the polka dots! I think it can look juvenile but you need to rethink how you pair it to avoid looking like a school girl... unless thats what your going for.

  7. Love the catalog/style guide this month in terms of pics and color. Beautiful. I love the shoes, jewelry, capri pants. The dots are cute but overkill in that many prints.

Last month's was a boring disappointment.

  10. Popped in store yesterday and picked up a copy of my own. FFM noted that the styling in this one is a bit lacking, and now that I see the whole thing, she is right as always!

The neon colors, crazy jewelry and big dots can read "juvenile" as silver_lining said. I was particularly confused by Jenna's Picks, which I usually love but this time looked more "Justice For Girls" than "J.Crew!"

Will there be more jewel tones, tweeds, richer prints, and beautiful jackets in the next rollout?

  11. I agree with others. I was REALLY hoping to not see neon. The color choices seem very limited and agree, springlike. I find the styling, polka dots and neon headphones to be incredibly juvenile. This is what I find in Crewcuts when I shop for my son. So I'm struggling to understand what my options are as a woman.

  12. I agree with what most of you are saying. The colors are uninspiring for fall. Plus, where's all the plaid and tweed that I'd love for fall?! I can't believe the prices for this stuff! I personally like the polka dots, but it's not enough to save this catalogue. I also hate the cover. The over-used illuminator. The forced facial expression and body position. The hat.... the lack of color.... worst cover ever? These surprised facial expressions are really getting old.

  13. Alexis: Thank you for the mention and link love! :)

Regarding the catalog, as I mentioned before, while I do like several of the new items, I do not care for the majority of the styling in it at all. There are a couple of outfits that I think look ok, but the other combinations really leave a lot to be desired, as does the catalog in general. I know this is only their pre-fall rollout, but the August catalogs from several years ago were not this boring. If you look at the the August 2009 catalog here, and the August 2007 catalog here, you can really see how different the present day catalog is, and how many changes have been made.

    1. So funny you mention the August 2009 catalogue FFM. It's one of my all-time faves...I think I own about 15 or 20 items from that book.

    2. Roxy: I still have about the same number of items from that catalog, too. :)

  14. The cranky middle aged lady in me really dislikes the messy hair and those stupid neon electronics and headphones. Enough with the sequins, polka dots and baseball caps. It all made me wonder if I suddenly had a teenager living with me.....like a really rich movie star teenager. Those prices and she'd have to be. This catalog looks and even feels cheap...like a knockoff J. Crew catalog...or maybe one (if it existed) for their outlet stores. Hope seeing things in person will make it all better!

  15. I agree with some of you ladies, the catalog is uninspiring and a few of the spreads like Jenna's Picks are juvenile, with the candy colored keyboards and tin water bottle hanging from a bag?? its just not my thing. Let's all hope the September catalog will have the wow factor.

  16. Shout out to FFM for scanning the pages.

The overall mood is very childish and the excessive polka dots don't help. The tie-neck blouses look great, if you're a serf. The jewelry is really awful, I don't get how any of you can wear such gaudy neon pieces whether it's plastic or enamel. Very ticky tacky in general. The steady decline continues, Tom and Gayle are no match for Marissa.

  17. Polka dots are cute, but no match for stripes. The bigger the dot, the less I like it.

  18. I just received my catalog today. I was VERY underwhelmed. I liked last years fall rollout much better. There were so many pieces I felt like I had to have--but not this year. I guess I'll just enjoy summer sale.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Too much polka-dot action for me. Love the Janey patent flats! And glad J.Crew brought back the heather acorn colour in the No.2 pencil skirt, as I missed purchasing it last winter. But it's a shame they raised the price another $10 to $130 -- I'm sure it was $120 last year.

  20. the prices are way too high...I remember everyone wanting the paisley skirt (this summer) and I think alot of you were able to get it on super-sale. I say we all sit back in our lounge chairs and enjoying wearing our super-sale summer purchases and lets talk sale in Oct...

  21. Hi...even though the catalog made me cranky I stopped in the B & M today. I bought the field jacket in navy...love! Fits great and something I'll wear forever. Tried not to love the Liberty shirt in Indian paisley, but the fabric is divine and it looks smashing with the no. 2 golden burgandy skirt, which I bought too. My SA laughed and said "thanks! Now I have to buy this whole outfit too". Alot of you have expressed love for the chevron sequin top. Here's my experience. It does not have a neck zipper and a small neck...not a scoop neck. I had it over my head when I realized I would have to literally scrape it over my face possibly getting makeup on it. Those tops are going to be really fouled up with makeup on the necks, snags and missing sequins by the time everyone tries them on. If you like it, order it online or take a careful inspection of them in store. So I can't comment on fit or anything. I just didn't want to chance it. My SA expressed the very same concern.

  22. Hi there...

I don't post often (or ever really -- but I do follow daily) and I just wanted to say that I too, am tired of the price increases. They are basically pricing their loyal customers out of the market, which makes me sad and angry. So, feeling determined this morning, I emailed Mickey and I already received a response. We will be having a phone conference on Monday afternoon.

I am a 30-something, professional, mother of three, with a great job, but I cannot for the life of me, validate spending $168 on a printed pencil skirt, without feeling guilty about it. Although I love J.Crew, I am looking for value and quality.

I'll let you know how it goes. If you have any questions that you'd like me to ask, let me know!

Btw, love the blog. I've been reading for years. It's awesome to know that there is a community out there who loves fashion and the Crew as much as I do.

    2. I am feeling the exact same way there only 2 items I like in the whole catalog and both are priced way above what I would spend on a top and a skirt. it is just crazy! And the quality is diminishing not staying consistent or improving with the high prices

      Delete
    3. Unfortunately I must add there are lot of people who can afford to pay Jcrew's high prices and a lot of things do sell out. There were several pencil skirts I wanted but they never made it low enough priced online in my size in sold out so I just did with out I don't know who can afford them but obviously there are a lot out there who can

    4. I shared some the opinions from other bloggers above. I also think that the jewelry is too bright/gaudy and some of the prints (like big polka dots) are only suitable for weekends.

On the other hand, I have to admit I am a recent convert to J Crew. I used to buy Marc by Marc Jacobs, Nanette Lepore and Diane Von Furstenburg, where prices are higher but the clothes were just made in China. However, what caught my eyes at J Crew are the shoes that are made in Italy that are selling at a fraction of the price of other "made in Italy" brands, and they are well made and look chic.

That being said, I have started to notice the sales pattern at J Crew as I was able to buy some of the shoes I wanted at much lower prices on sales. With that in mind, unless there is an item I can't live without, I will just wait it out for sales.

I guess this is a general rule of fashion, wait for lower prices when the season is at least half way done.

    7. Jaimee, that's fantastic! Congratulations on getting your point of view to the top!

I'm with you 100%. My favorite example for you to point our in your call ... on page 23 of the new style guide, a RAYON tee shirt is $128 and jeans are $288, the outfit rings up at an insane $416. And it looks like something you could get at Old Navy for $50.

      Delete
    8. I agree with Genny about the percent off entire regular price purchase. Especially for cardholders--the whole reason I got a card was for the benefits because I shop at J.Crew so much. So far, all I've seen are rewards, which are nice, but aren't a great benefit by any means.

  23. Please do keep us posted on the conversation with Mickey. Yesterday I looked at my closet and was ashamed at how many things I own simply because they were on sale. I'm going to set myself a monthly budget and try my hardest to think more about what I'm buying. I don't mind paying full price if I know I love the item and will wear it forever. If the higher price trend continues I will simply have to buy less and plan more, which will be good for me. I do believe we will see alot of things go on sale soon, but I'm still going to try to restrain my shopping. This next week I'm going to get out my fall/winter clothes and make a list of what I need to fill in gaps and not go crazy. This will be a big challenge for me.

    1. What a great idea. I buy things just because they are a 'good deal' only to find that I don't need or really like the item. Taking stock of what I have and doing a bit of planning sounds like what I need to do.

  24. (original) Jenny....I agree. Lots of people can afford full price and lots of purchases. I think the snakeprint pencil skirt will sell out fast. I checked out some other stores today and saw snake all over the place. It's the new leopard, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I know what you mean about paying full price. I do it alot, but it seems to me that just the basics are getting out of control. I just don't think that basic skirts and sweaters should continue to go up and up. I am all for having Collection pieces. But I do think that the basics should remain reasonable. A 10% or more price increase from one season to the next is ridiculous in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree - why would the cost of a basic pencil skirt or pair of pants go up so much, so fast? I feel taken advantage of when they do that. I understand that they will charge a lot for special Collection pieces, but not when it is their go-to styles.

      Delete
  26. starrflyr13....I agree! I figured out that some things I bought last year have increased in price by up to 33%. That's ridiculous! I rarely see any collection pieces I can justify buying. I don't have the kind of lifestyle for them. So I hope they can keep the lid on the Tippi sweaters and the pencil skirts...which have gone up from last year. I guess my question to Mickey would be...."Has the average customer's income increased at the rate that the prices of the line has?" Again, I'm going to buy less.

    ReplyDelete
  27. JSR....It also seems that sizing up in the chevron sequin top might be necessary. I had a Medium and wondered if it looked too small in the shoulders and arms. So that might be something to take into account. I'll be curious to read what other folks who try it on think about the small neck and sizing.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have been so uninspired by the last Catalogs that I am not even looking forward to them anymore. But I do think that the $600 pants shouldn't be the highlight of a JCrew catalog. If they want to produce a few pairs of those for a few happy customers, fine but they should give the rest of us something equally interesting. It seems that the normally priced stuff is becoming increasingly boring.

    1. Excellent point. I like the black and white print collection pieces but the prices r just outrageous.

  29. I agree about the sticker shock of the new fall collection. To check I looked at the August 2011 catalog. Wool cafe capris and wool #2 pencils are up $10 from last fall. Cashmere crew neck cardigan up $20. Blythe blouse is up $12. A jackie twinset will cost you $6 more. Wool flannel schoolboy is up $10. Shoes mostly stayed same: suede cece and Mcallister wedge. The Valentina patent pump actually went down $10. The one thing I think is crazy is the new elephant bangle at $128. It is made very similarly to this spring's enamel ram bracelet which was only $98.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I know I didn't pay $125.00 for the classic pave bracelet. Last December I think it was $98.00 AND I got it on sale! I'm pretty sure it was 30% off in store. I got the red bubble necklace at the same time on sale too. I collect jewelry and rarely meet a jool I don't love...but this new collection is just odd. I don't see anything I want.

    ReplyDelete
  31. So after getting my catalog and having a couple days to ponder the new arrivals... it just isn't clicking with me. While I buy a lot of casual clothes in the summer, I buy a lot of wear to work clothes in the fall. I'm all capri-ed out, and J. Crew's wear to work offerings just aren't as strong as their competitors. There are some nice dresses, but too many are online only, which I don't really have the patience for.

That said, I'll probably pick up the pencil skirt in abstract floral at some (sale) point.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I do not disagree about sticker shock. For me, there were some lovely pieces in this rollout. I like part of the catalogue as well. However, I usually find more to love in the September catalogue historically, so my expectations were low I guess! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. On the price increases: $600 Capris and $150-$250 Perfect Shirts are pricing me out, I'll be honest.

I'm obsessed w the brand and have a tendency to fall in love with everything w a J. Crew label on it and everything I see when I walk in the store. These are going to be my "screens" for fall JC purchases:

    1. Would I still covet the item if were a Target or Kohl's brand?

    2. What price point is realistically worth it for the design and quality level?

That should give me some discipline.

    ReplyDelete

    1. it is said we only wear 20% of the clothing we have...I think this a correct statement. I vow to try and waer what I have ei. no more pencil skirts required. Anyone care to comment on what they have too much of and really should try to wear more often?

      Delete
    2. I've been using this line of thinking for awhile now and it's saved me a lot of heartache from JC. Instead of the looking->purchasing->returning->rebuying cycle, I earmark those items that interest me in the catalog, check the sale section in a month or so, then purchase if I think the price is fair. The "fair" price is one I've determined without my "J. Crew goggles" on.

However, the truth is, with these higher price points to begin with, even the sale prices may soon be out of my comfort zone.

      Delete
    3. Oh I know. I recently got the cashmere boyfriend sweater and it was $127 after being on sale with an additional 30% off.

    4. Great post, ruffles, I will use those screens too! Because honestly, that same oxford or polka-dot popover, with a Loft or Kohls label, loses its cachet so I know I'm just being sucked in by the JC label and yummy colors. The other thing I would add, as a screen for myself is, "Does that fill in a gap in my wardrobe or do I already already have similar clothes that fill the same function for the same occasion?" I tend to buy for some "imagined" lifestyle that I no longer have as a stay-at-home mom, and quite frankly, my social life is really not so busy or dressy that I need all these clothes anyway. It helps me exercise restraint.

      Delete
  34. ruffles, yes. I have really cut back on my J.Crew purchases the past year using the rules you posted!I have a closet full of perfect shirts from 2005-2008 (when the quality was even better; I'd say I have about 20+). They are amazing shirts and I find the ones being produced now just don't match up quality wise. The style and colors are still in fashion though...classics that will never go out of style. I LOVE some of the new ones but the prices are outrageous!

    ReplyDelete

  41. I finally took a peek at the catalog. I love the gold heel on the Janey. I also really like the snakeprint pencil skirt and the purple cable cashmere sweater. But I already have way more shoes, sweaters and skirts than I need, so I have no immediate plans to buy anything.

  42. I agree with Ruffles! I saw the pompon cafe capris - I put a price in my head and when they were actually lower than that price, i bit. I felt great about the purchase then and did not begrudge the price. I think that is truly the way to go!

  43. Some thoughts...
Hexicon, that book looks interesting. I've requested it through interlibrary loan. JCA book club, anyone?

Jaime, I'll be interested to hear how your conversation with DL goes. The price increases especially bug on good-selling items during the same season (like the Minnies going up $10 from one month to the next), and when the starting price points are different in store and online, like the chambray dot shirt.

Shopping Celle, thanks for breaking down the price increases - I hadn't realized there were so many of them. Unfortunately, it's not like the price increases are coming because they're trying to maintain the quality of years past. JC is taking lots of shortcuts AND increasing the price of items. They used to have silk lining in jackets and underneath the collars, full interior waistbands in the pencil skirts (not that grosgrain ribbon), shirt seams that had some slack so that they didn't unravel after one wearing, buttons that didn't fall off, etc. Now with all the poly, acrylic, rayon, raw edges and exposed zippers (read: cheap shortcuts that damage clothes that are sold as "modern") I sometimes wonder if I'm looking at LOFT instead of JC.

I guess I could understand if the price increases were explained like "well, the price of cotton/silk/etc is going up and we want to maintain quality and this is the cost of doing so", but we all know that's not the case. I've said it before, but it says something that I would often rather hunt down older (read: already worn) items on eBay than pay JC for their current offerings. Every rollout there are 1 or 2 (good) surprises, but the price points are way high - especially considering the pieces are often relegated to final sale within a month.

    2. If I am not mistaken our clever leader Mickey said the sale section was for "mistakes". That is a heck of alot of mistakes. I believe this was a quote form a piece about him that was either written or aired on TV recently. Just saying...

      Delete
    3. This. It was on the CNBC special that aired recently. I no longer have any incentive to pay fp. Prices are obscene, and even though I am able to pay fp, I'm no fool! Quality is deteriorating, too many synthetic fabrics. I've had one too many holes show up in t's that I refuse to purchase any knits. Tons of loose buttons and seams that split. EVERYTHING hits sale eventually. I think many learned that the hard way this season, particularly with the porcelain paisley items.

While I liked a few things from this recent roll out, the truth is that only a few will make it into my closet and all will be sale purchases. At these price points, my $ is only going to those few lovely classics with a twist that I can't find anywhere else. Sadly, as j crew has become more and more "fast fashion" and these days store that do fast fashion are a dime a dozen. Many, like h&m, Zara, etc do it at much better price points and with better quality to boot. My h&m tees have lasted SEASONS, not just a few washes.

      Delete
    4. I agree on the pricing, there is really no reason there should be increases every year.

With that said, I actually feel the shoes which are made in Italy to be reasonably priced and very good quality for the price, even at retail. I did buy a pair of $19.99 espadrilles this summer which were from China but I certainly would not pay anywhere near $100+ they are asking for some of the other Chinese made shoes.

I still shop mostly at the end of season sales and like many others, I will generally stalk something until it goes on sale because it almost always does, and I just can't pay the retail prices they are asking for what it is.

I do like J Crew a lot more than its competitors and I will still continue to shop here instead of many other "comparable" retailers, just on sale. I feel like they have a great and consistent fit for the most part, I love the unique prints and I really love their Italian made shoes which is something I feel like no other comparable retailer offers.

  44. I am glad I was not the only one underwhelmed by the last catalog. I alway look forward to it but this one somehow missed it's mark.
The bright lip, tousled hair and stupid, comic-looking glasses ( forgive me- I live in Pittsburgh and thankfully some trends don't quite make it here) is about 4 seasons too old. Congrats to Jaime for having her voice heard. Please ask Mickey why JCrew continually fiddles with the prices ( not unlike Wal-Mart, not a competitor he wants to be compared with!). Please remind him that we, JCrew's loyal customers for many years, are what made this company so successful and him a very wealthy man. I am somewhat offended by some of the "price fiddling" and inconsistent customer service and store policies. Demographically we are a rather impressive group and should be treated with a bit more respect. Just saying...

  45. I received my catalog in the mail Saturday, and I guess I may be in the minority here, but there were LOTS of things I loved and found many of the colors to be beautiful. Full-price J Crew shoes are out of my price-range but there were so many I loved and I will have my fingers crossed for sales on them as the fall continues.
One thing for me that keeps me coming back to J Crew is the fit--while others here at JCA sometimes point out more affordable, similar styles to J Crew at Land's End, Loft, etc., those brands' clothes do not fit me well at all. So for me there's no point comparing!

    1. I agree with you on fit. J. Crew's fit is usually modern/in style, too.

    2. I totally agree about fit too. I find many of the J. Crew-like retailers to be borderline frumpy. Or to be more fair, you have to pick and choose to find the items that are not frumpy. With J. Crew, I feel like the default is modern and flattering.

  46. Pink Maple....I agree with you about fit. I shop at JC because I know season to season the basic skirts, sweaters and capris with fit. I don't shop at Ann Taylor, Loft, H&M, Anthro because most often the clothing seems to be for petite women and most too trendy or young for me. I'll stick with JC. For me there is nothing better out there. Well....if I were rich that would be a different story! HEE!

  47. I read the comment about the tight neck on the Zigzag Sequin Top.
Can anyone comment on how tight the neck is on the Jackie Pullover? I don't like high crewneck tops. Thanks.

  48. The fit at J.Crew used to be great but it has changed recently. The suiting dresses no longer fit my boyish figure, they are all too large on the bottom. They used to be consistent at least but now there is always the question of whether to size up or size down and half the time it depends on which color or print in the same item because they are all different.

The shoes might appear well-made until you put them next to a pair of top quality shoes. Synthetic lining and sole? Glue oozing out of the joins? Straps that need to be sanded so they don't cut the skin? These are NOT hallmarks of well-made shoes. Go to Nieman-Marcus or Saks Fifth Avenue and spend a couple of hours trying on quality shoes. Then you will know the difference.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I know it has been said but what is up with all the synthetic fabrics?? The past couple seasons I have loved all the silk tops and blouses, and now they are almost all rayon which I find unacceptable especially at this prices. I love the colorblock stripe top but can't believe a rayon top is $128. Taking a pass on everything from this rollout.

  50. This is OT, but I would like to see more models "north of the 49th parellel" in the catalogs and ads. What happened to Lauren Hutton? How about Dayle Haddon, who models for Talbots? How about Patti Hansen? Talbot's is featuring the stunning 80 year old Carmen dell'Orefice in their new wedding line ad. I'm tired of looking a very boyish and thin young models. I'd love to see some variety in ages, shapes and sizes!

    1. Straycat, I agree. I am in the 50-65 check box and love to include some J Crew styles each season. Maybe not the demographic J Crew was going for since they don't offer senior citizen discount. But I was fascinated by the stylist on the VPS link, if she is styling for J Crew maybe they should include some models closer to her age group.

    2. They used to do this! Part of the reason I can't quit j crew is that I can go shopping there with my mom and younger sister and have a ball. Something for all of us!

  51. JSRConifer....I'm 55. Not exactly JC's target customer, but 95% of everything I buy comes from there. I also noticed the stylist on the VPS link and thought the same thing! I can't imagine why JC wouldn't want to use older models. I've heard gray is the new blonde!

  52. Oh speaking of Gayle the VPS stylist on the link....I'm so hoping those crazy paisley pants she's wearing are coming up. I'm lusting for them!! My luck they'll be collection and way out of my price range. But I so hope not!

  53. @ maryeb: The necklines on the Jackie pullovers are not tight, they dip just below my clavicle. The material is also nice and stretchy and holds its shape really well. A lot of JCA's weren't crazy about the way the fabric felt against their skin, but I really like them and they've become a wardrobe favorite of mine.

I did a review ages ago here: http://onlyboringpeoplearebored.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Sorry about the full link, I can't embed at work. HTH!

    1. Thanks, Whitney. I just read your review. It was very helpful. Copy/paste works just fine.

  54. I was kind of annoyed with "Jenna's Pics" this time around - I'm a college student so I'm a sucker for all kinds of fun school supplies.....(like the colored keyboards that took up basically one eighth of the entire spread) and was extremely disappointed that #1 J.Crew didn't even sell them and #2 they didn't tell you where to find them. I tried the "colorware.com" link and was lead to a shady landing page type site. Does anyone know where to find them?

All in all, I agree with most of you when you say this catalogue was a disappointment. I'm only 20 and even I thought it appeared extremely juvenile - my school, Miami University (Ohio), is referred to as "J.Crew U." because it's a favorite store of a good amount of the students and despite the fact there are only 14, 000 students we receive 100+ packages a day from J.Crew. I'm afraid if this is all J.Crew has to offer this fall that number will seriously decline.

  55. Got my new catalogue in the mail last night and had already looked at it online from FFM blog page. Only two things I put in my must have category. Painter boatneck in stripe (byzantine blue) and the Brompton Mini-Hobo in Rainforest Green. I am going to my B&M event on Friday, maybe something else will jump out at me. Hopefully, September's catalogue with have more to love.

  56. I have to admit I only scanned it quickly, but there wasn't a whole lot that caught my eye in the new catalogue. The tweed pencil skirt is the only thing I can honestly say I want. I was, however, quite excited to see boots, tweed and cashmere heralding fall!

  57. I like the Downtown Field Jacket but I don't think it has a hood. Overall, everything is too overpriced and the shoes, in addition to being poorly made, are really not attractive lately. Why ruin a perfectly good t-strap with florals or paisley??
