J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Hi guys... J.Crew Sales Associate here! Yes, I have an obsession with this site and a bunch of blogs listed in the blog roll call now... ha. I have seen a few people review the Polka Dot Boy Shirt, but I wanted to mention another cute shirt that my store recently got in - it's called the Oxford Popover, and it's hanging with the Polka Dot Boy Shirt in my store. It is the same style as the normal popovers (2 front pockets, buttons 3/4 of the way down the shirt), but is made out of a lovely oxford shirt material (like the men's shirt). So cute! I've seen 2 colors - aqua (adorable) and light blue (similar to the chambray). It's not on the site or in the style guide yet, but is definitely worth a look if you are into the menswear look for women... Priced at $72 and fits tts (I wear an XS in most tops and I take a 00 in this shirt). Can't wait for us to get more Fall stuff in! :)

    2. Thanks for sharing MissKitty! I will be keeping an eye out for that top next time I am in the store. :)

    3. I just saw this in my store (and bought it ... oops!). It's a great piece. It is indeed a lovely shirt - a true men's Oxford material. I saw the green (aqua) and blue. I bought the green, but the blue was lovely, too. Runs TTS. Great quality, and a real wardrobe staple item. A bit pricey at $72 for a basic popover, but something that will get a lot of wear in multiple seasons.

    4. Y'all are so welcome! My store got a ton of the blue in, but I am keeping an eye out for a 00 in aqua. I was so drawn to the aqua b/c I don't have anything else like it... I am working a lot the rest of the week, so I will snag one as soon as I see my size again. It would be perfect to wear to work... ;) I did the live chat on the website and was told that it would go on sale online/be available in the style guide on July 17th. I agree that it is a little pricey but it is a lovely material and will still look great in 5+ years, imo. And it can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. :)

    5. *Be available for sale online/in the style guide on July 17th... not go on sale/marked down... that would be the fastest turnaround ever! ;)

  2. Can somebody review or comment on the short-sleeve sweatshirt(# 82342)?
Is it TTS and worth full price?
    TIA!!

    1. It fits TTS but beware, it will shrink in the dryer. I was able to stretch it back out, but I don't like high-maintenance clothing especially sweatshirts that shouldn't shrink (IMO).

    2. How do you wear it,by itself or with a shirt underneath?

      Delete
    3. I wore a cami layered under it in case it got too hot, but it wasn't really visible.

    4. I have worn it by itself and with a long sleeve shirt underneath. It's really comfortable.I think it's worth full price because where I live it comes in handy - we haven't had much of a summer yet. It's been great on those in-between days when it's too cool for a regular tee but too warm for a sweatshirt.

I agree that it's TTS. I found it a little snug when it arrived, but it stretched just enough with wear. Same thing with the wash; I wash on cold, put it on low heat in the dryer, and then as I wear it the shirt loosens to just the right size. I don't have a problem with it.

    6. Just purchased the short sleeve sweatshirt in store for $29.99 (& 30% off). They just got marked down today. Lots of new markdowns; unfortunately my store does not carry case jewelry or shoes. Definitely worth a visit if you are near a B&M!

  3. I bought the pom pom shell which is lovely, it reminds me of my old French baby clothes! I went for the size 4, I'm 34C and it fits well but the 6 might have given a better drape to the garment. I also received the long cabochon earrings in green which I love.

  4. I LOVE the café capri in domino eyelet! I owned a pair of white eyelet pants some 20 years ago (!) and wore them all the time in the summer. These are embroidered thickly, which adds an interesting texture of raised polka dots that helps to prevent the show-through that can be problematic with white pants. Seems they fit slimmer than other café capris I own but the fabric can add some dimension and weight. They are 100% cotton lined with 100% cotton. I received many compliments, see IRL here along with an interesting clutch from Kate Spade.

  5. If you are contemplating the pompon jacquard capris if there is a 30% off sale later this week in honour of Independence Day, see my review here. http://onecantgetoverthehabit.blogspot.ca/2012/06/my-lucky-pants.html

I truly love these! Thanks Tiffany Rose for the review of the domino eyelet capris - I have been eying them and may bite if there is a sale - they look wonderful on you!

  8. Hi ladies, I just posted a review for Collection Sequin Midi Sirt here. I also have tons of older reviews here.

  9. The linen cami (80330) is a great basic. The top isn't vanity sized (I'm 34AA and got a small, and I usually order xs in items that run all the way from xxs to xl). The linen itself is appealing--not too thin--and the straps are adjustable. The white color is white, not ivory, which is another plus. All three colors are currently $35 on sale.

  10. Received the suede Monas. I'm normally a 38 (7.5 in JCrew), and ordered an 8. They are a touch too big length wise (expected, but corrected with an insole). The width is narrow (and I have narrow feet), so my regular size would have been way too tight even once I've broken them in. I ordered the deep orchid, and the color is similar to brilliant purple, but a bit little blue (if that makes sense!).

  13. It pops back every once in a while, but I recommend the drawstring mini (73674). The knit is very substantial - probably close to the Maritime dresses - and the color is dark navy/ivory, not white. At 5'5" it is SO NOT a mini on me - it hits a little above the kmee but is not at all indecent like some of their past minis. It may run a bit big - I ordered the M and it was quite big on my pp size 8 bottom half. I returned it for a S which fit fine. Love that it has pockets.

  14. Cafe Capri in Geranium Lace - love these capris! The color is a beautiful pinkish red, and the lace detail really make these pants special. They fit slightly big. I normally wear a 2 in pencil skirts, so I took a 0 in these pants and I still had a little room in the waist. Lengthwise, I'm 5'4" and the pants hit me right at my ankle. I highly recommend them! I've worn them a couple times on my blog: crewcrazylady.blogspot.com

  18. Has anyone heard whether or not there will be a promo for the holiday?! I tried calling customer service yesterday, but they didn't know anything. I've been holding out in some fp items in hopes of one, but even that's a long shot probably--it seems like in the past is was mostly a 30% off sale. If anyone hears any news I'd appreciate it!

  19. HERE are a few reviews from last week that I forgot to post. I bought another Whisper Gauze Siesta dress, this time in hammock green, because it's just so hot-weather friendly.

Also, I bought the Linen Schoolboy Blazer in Cerise, but I'm sending it back. Color is great, quality is great, fit is the same as all of the other Schoolboys I own, but the linen is much heavier than I expected. I thought that it would be about the same weight as my Chambray Schoolboy, but it's quite a bit heavier. This is why I hate living so far away from a B&M.

  21. Looking for others comments on the Circle eyelet skirt that's citron. I bought the 0 and the 2 and the sizes/fit is do off. I think the o is actually a oo by mistake cuz the 2 was 2" too big in the hips. Oh well. I want to rebut the o and find out. Also the ribbon strip boat neck tee- how does this fit? Thanks and happy 4th!

    1. Hi Pathos! Photos of the tee here and of the skirt here.

I think they both fit TTS (at least for me).

    2. The skirt looks fantastic on you! My size0 is too huggy and short. Has anyone taken in a pencil skirt successfully? I'm wondering if I can tailor the 2 to fit bc it's the right length.

  22. I've just posted up a review on my blog of the Supperclub Dress, I noticed it popbacked on the sale site this morning.
I love it but it is very fancy and the beads are delicate! True to size.

  23. Just received the Malta midheels, and I'm disappointed with them :( They were a great price, and are a great color (seashore beige), but the leather is rough and doesn't even really feel like leather. The back strap seems to be a little low, but I haven't walked in them much as I have hardwood floors in most of the house, and don't want to scuff the bottoms in case they end up needing to go back. Will walk in them more on the carpet later and hope they get better. Just not super cute, either, though, IMO.

  25. Looking for comments on the navy linen Schoolboy and the Chambray Schoolboy and if one would purchase both at the sale price, or just one.

    1. I have the chambray schoolboy and wear it often. I wear it with colored bottoms to work. I've probably worn it 25 times since I purchased it. It also looks great with white denim.

    2. I have both - white linen schoolboy and chambray and love both of them. I wore the white linen with the gingham altuzarra dress and the chambray schoolboy with just about anything. I think both blazers go with anything.

  26. Unknown.....I purchased the White Linen Schoolboy on sale. I really like it! It's a nice substancial weight linen, nice and structured and fits TTS. I own the navy wool schoolboy blazer and love it so much I wanted a spring/summer version. Hope that helps!

  27. Has anyone machine washed (on delicate, cold water, etc) their Elinor dress? Tag reads "Dry clean" but not "dry clean ONLY"--wondering if I can get away with it.

  28. http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/sweaters/crewnecksandboatnecks/PRDOVR~46725/46725.jsp

This is a short review of the tippi sweater. I buy them every year for the summer months (usually after going on sale).

This year I had an issue with the sweater fitting too loose and the knit not being closed enough. When I wore the correct size sweater in navy over a collared shirt, the collared shirt showed underneath (just barely, but enough to notice). When I went up a size though, everything was shapeless. This is just from trying them on.

I purchased one in April and while it fit great, there's already a hole in it.

I think J Crew needs to start being held accountable for this massive variance in quality. I have much cheaper clothing that holds up way better than some of my J Crew stuff. I think if a sweater gets a hole in it when it SHOULDN'T it should be able to be exchanged for a new one free of cost.

I have spent hundreds of dollars on sweaters from J Crew that all got holes for dumb reasons or had pilling or the seems come apart. It's only worth it if I manage to get them on clearance, which can be difficult. I'd like to be able to exchange them for new ones when this kind of stuff happens after a mere two months of wearing it lightly.

  29. A handy rule of thumb: if a tag says "dry clean", you can hand wash it and be fine. If it says "dry clean only", then you should definitely dry clean:)

  31. I think the rule of thumb about dry cleaning (if it says "dry clean" okay to gently wash, if it says "dry clean only" only dry clean) is helpful but not absolute. I have plenty of things marked dry clean only that I have washed repeatedly, including a few silk items from J. Crew, with no problems. I just washed an Alexander Wang dress that said "dry clean only" and it turned out perfect. I think it's more about fabric content. Anyway, not sure how helpful my comment is, but there you have it!

    1. That is helpful. This particular dress is 95% cotton, 5% linen, so I think it should be okay. I just don't want to assume and then ruin the dress!

  32. Hey, all...I have a brief review of the pleated blouson dress and the lena wedges at my blog , but go ahead and go straight to the bottom of the post if you want to read that and not my vitriol over the (continued) loss of power from the huge storm that has recently swamped our dear nation's capital. :)

This is OT, but wondering if any JCAs are in Cincinnati. We are relocating there this summer from Chicago. I'm looking for advice (and where the closest J Crew is!) Send me an email: carriereid24@yahoo.com

  36. Looking for a review comparing this year's 120s pencil skirts with past seasons'. I noticed, looking at the pictures online, the "darts" (don't know if that's the correct name for the two vertical 3" seams from the waistband down, a few inches in from the side) are missing and the waistband is narrower. I'm thinking that makes the fit less attractive to me?
    TIA for any comments!!

  37. Couple more Madewell reviews since they have another promo.
Won hundred print shift dress (currently sold old but pops back). It is European sized. The XS is marked 34. It definitely comes in at the hem as the pics sort of show and is very blouse through the mid section. It could be belted but I don't mind the look. It's unlined and fairly sheer. The print is great IRL. The downside is the fabric feels pretty cheap. I knew it was viscose but it feels like that cheap fabric like H&M dresses. Overall I like it but def not for full price.

  38. And market tank dress in Chilean flower (pink). This is a pretty pink, bright but not neon IMO, probably like watermelon pink. Dress is nicely finished and has pockets. Is short but not too short. The details at the top make it a little different than the usual slip dress. Again a cute easy summer dress for sale but not full price. Lined and not sheer. Waist is slightly above natural waist as for many Madewell dresses.

  39. WMM - you're most welcome and thanks for the nice words. Your review of the pompon jacquard capri pants is hilarious and now I must stalk for my size!

  40. Appgal, I washed my Elinor and ruined it. It came out of the washer with the lining intact but the dress material was shrunken at least 3 inches so the lining hangs way below the dress. I too was under the impression
that dry clean could be hand washed but I ruined this dress. ;(

    1. Yikes, thanks for the advice. So sorry your dress got ruined. I would be so sad. I will not tempt fate and will take it to the dry cleaners!

      Delete
  41. ...to clarify, I washed the Elinor in the washer on the "hand wash" cycle. Maybe it was in the water too long? I think it is the linen part that made it shrink.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I recently was able to purchase the blythe blouse in neon azalea (love it) and in the bright yellow color. I couldn't believe how sheer the yellow color was! The pink was so beautiful and when I tried on the yellow-golden sun possibly? (I had on a white cami under) you could clearly see ALL of the cami underneath and it didn't have a flattering appearing as "see-through". I returned this one :( .
