J.Crew posted this Spring/Summer 1989 catalog cover over on their Facebook page. How amazing is this picture?!?! Love. It.

  1. This is really very coincidental. I just picked up this dress at a flee market a few weeks back and I've been dying to know what year it was from since it didn't have that information on the tags. I didn't realize it was that old. The dress is in amazing condition and very well made (in Hong Kong). Wow J. Crew, maybe you should take some inspiration from these flashbacks.

  2. Dang! I'd wear that dress now! It's so much cuter than any they've done in the last couple years with polka dots.

  5. The model looks like a woman. Hunky guys too, not the wisps they seem to favor now.

  6. This is adorable! I was straight out of college when this came out and JC was still out of my price range, for the most part. Why is it when I can afford it now, J Crew stopped making these lovely clothes?

Mickey, go back to your archives and re-issue some of these!

    1. I remember getting the catalogs in the mail in college and seeing Lauren Hutton and Molly Simms and a handful of others, they seemed happy and carefree. The models in most of the J. Crew catalogs today look starved and unhappy.

    2. I always think "deer caught in the headlights" when I see the JC models in the catalog these past few years.... Not a good look IMO.

  7. I agree with Lane. The model looks like a women, which is lacking in recent years. Natural, healthy, smiling...all very apropos for a summer afternoon on the beach. It looks very modern, soulful and refreshing for a 30 year old catalog.

  8. Man, now I want to see the rest of the catalog.

Also, (slightly) OT: did anyone see any follow-up from user Jaime about her conversation with DL Mickey..? I was genuinely curious about how that went!

  9. Oh JCAs, I am happy to hear you love this photo too! There is something about this cover- everyone is smiling and having a good time. Like many of you already mentioned, the woman looks fantastic! Even though she is gorgeous, she comes across real. For a catalog from the 80s, the look and style is classic! :)

  10. Love this cover, no stick thin, scowling or surprised, pulled through a bush backwards look. Just a happy, smiling, natural women. Well, hey so would I be if I was surrounded by 3 hunks.

  11. I had that dress! Ended up parting with it because of gapping in chest which caused modesty issues for me. I still have a few J Crew items from the 80's, I wonder if they are in that same catalog?

  12. Wow, what a fun picture and what a LUCKY lady! It is nice to see a normal looking girl and a smiling face. And look, eventhough she is on the beach her hair is perfectly groomed, which is SOOO unlike the recent catalogs. Thanks for the look Alexis. I never even saw a J Crew catalog until the 2000's.

  13. LUVVIT!
But I am surprised to see that JC was making polka dots back in 1989 when according to their website, the polka dot was invented for this season in JC's very own design studio.

  15. LOVE.LOVE.LOVE that pic. I found ONE item in the card members rewards flyer that they included for the fall/ winter 2012 collection~ it looks like I will be hanging onto my money this season~ I feel like j crew is forgetting the j crew lovers love classic with a twist. The wonderful thing about that photo is it doesn't look twenty some years ago~it looks like it could have easily been taken this past spring
