J.Crew Email: Jenna Picks Her Favorites...

J.Crew sent an email today letting us know about Jenna Lyon's picks (6 of 11). Her choices are also available in the current catalog (all 11 picks), as discussed in an earlier post (click here). Jenna mentions in the catalog that "these are a few of my favorites for the season... new neutrals inspired by soft makeup palettes- nudes, pinks and champagne- and pops of bright, happy color (with just a bit of shimmer)."

I am not going to lie, when I saw the email I was a bit disappointed- not in Jenna's picks, but because I was hoping to see another promotion. (Perhaps free shipping on $100+, maybe an offer to save an additional 20% off sale items?) I guess I have been spoiled by all the holiday offers, that I expect to see a promo right after another one ends. ;)

Incidentally, there is a {great} review & discussion of Jenna's No. 5 pick here: Product Review: Golden Bird's-Nest Ring.

Do you agree with Jenna Lyons picks and color palette for the upcoming collection (especially since we have now been able to see a few items in-person at stores)? :) Which items are your "love its" and "leave its"? ;) When do you think a new promotion (& what kind) will be offered? :)

  1. I for one LOVE the light colors for this season. I can't say Jenna's picks are my fav's but I do love the cashmere swing sweater in crip celery! I'm excited to see the spring roll out!!

  2. I just can't get past the "FART" image on that t-shirt! Sorry, Jenna! It almost seems like a subliminal joke played by one of JCrew's designers!

  4. eh, I'm not too thrilled with the nudetones. I am pale and they look very washed out on me. Hoping for more greens and oranges. I don't plan on buying anything yet (other than staples like 5" chinos, etc. which I won't buy 'til it's actually spring, anyway!). There are a few dresses I liked, but don't have any reason to buy them right now, at full price to boot.

  5. I was also hoping for a new % off promotion today - I've got a cart full of items but I refuse to pull the trigger until there's some sort of discount (I can't stomach paying full price...$110 for one cami is TOO MUCH!) For the most part the items I want aren't selling out that quickly, but geez, I hope they throw us a bone sooner as opposed to later.

  6. I don't really like the color palette; I'm fair-skinned with reddish hair & I look terrible in pastels. Ack!

I might spend my money this spring at French Connection and hold out till J. Crew brings out the summer stuff!!

  7. I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the color palette!!! I am absolutely THRILLED about the neutrals and muted colors. I am also anxiously awaiting the Spring rollout! :)

As for the specific items Jenna picked...I'm not overly excited about any of them, except for the Capri Sandals (which I already own), and the Travel Trench.

  8. I dislike the new spring color palette. It does nothing for my complexion. I won't be buying much from JCrew this spring when 90% of my shopping is normally done there...I have found some really nice spring thing elsewhere and will be ready for the warm weather when it arrives!

  9. I like the colors, and have several items I would like, but right now I have to pay off my December purchases. I did order the parlor knit dress, as it was sold out in olive in small already. I'm usually a small or medium, and this purchase put me over the $100 mark for free shipping.
The Safari T-shirt just screams FART at me. Maybe because I have young children who still love potty humor and fart is a term frequently used in our household.
I was returning something at a store, and they had it on a mannequin with a cardigan-NOT a good idea! I bet they'll be 9.99 some day.

  10. I can wait.

I am in no hurry to buy white jeans and short-sleeve cardis so money can hang in my closet. Meanwhile, when you do buy ahead, everything eventually goes on sale. I mean, what's the rush? There's a high of 20 today! If you are in a warm climate, more power to ya as there are some cute items. I like a couple of Jenna's picks.

I was hoping for a promo on my last few winter sale needs as there are still a couple pricey basics that I would snag but cannot bring myself to do it without a percent off. It's as if I will just be like,"Damn-I missed them" if they happen to sell out. It's knowing I can survive the season until next year if need:)

  11. It's fun that they do Jenna's picks for the catalog, but I really wish they had new content for the stuff they send out in the e-mails.

The re-use stuff all the time. It's the the catalog, it's on the front page of the site, and it's on the catalog on the site.

Why not send us little tips on how to wear the new stuff? Outfit and accessory ideas, etc. I would be more excited to see that than the page that is in my catalog at home.

That said, I do love the spring color palette. It isn't all pastels (which I look kind of bad in), so that makes me happy.

  12. Okay, I should pay attention to what I'm writing! Sorry if you guys need an interpreter to figure out what I just wrote.

I rolled into the office this morning with a huge stack of proofs to go through, and I haven't had any coffee.

  13. I like the spring color palette and a lot of the camis look pretty

    ReplyDelete
  14. I really like the neutral colors like the champagne and stone colors. Pastels, though, are another story entirely. I always feel like an easter egg with really, really white arms and legs when I wear them :)

Has anyone bought the new Parlor Knit dress yet? I'm wondering if it fits similar to other j.crew knit dresses. How deep is the v-neck, etc...Any thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  15. haus_frau: I am in total agreement with your comment about changing up the emails. Instead of just displaying the same information- it would be wonderful if they show us different ways to wear the new stuff. :)

I think that is why I liked the "1 Cardi 4 Ways" idea they used. :)

  16. I like the neutral colors (which, btw, will look great with a tan!), and I especially love the crisp celery and clover colors! However, like AppGal mentioned, I too am not a fan of pastels, so I will be staying away from those. It's freezing here in NY, and only going to get worse as the week progresses (high of 12 degrees on Friday!), so it's hard to really think about buying spring clothes when I know I can't wear them for months. I did pick up the twist sleeve shirt in navy on Friday, but that was because the price was right at $69.50, and I happened to be in the B&M making a few returns.

  17. Guys, J. Crew lost BIG money this holiday season. They will not put out % off promotions any time soon. If you can't afford this stuff without it, don't buy it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I was also hoping for at least a 20% off coupon today. Although I am a little tired of the sale items. I keep looking at the same things over and over.

  19. Is it me, or does the sweater in the picture look like there is some writing on the inside of the bottom hem? Haven't had my coffee yet . . .

  21. I love this spring's color palette. Even though, in some cases, jewel tones look better with my coloring, I found the colors from fall a little jarring/shocking.

These colors are much more versatile and I can see working them into my wardrobe for virtually EVERY season!

  23. I heard from a JCREW manager from a concept store that there will be a promotion around Valentine's Day (possible Friends & Family). He told me to hold off on buying new things until that time. Just some food for thought :) Happy Monday!

  24. I love the Nicky skirt in both the spring dots and the vibrant colors. Does anyone have it yet? I plan to place an order this week. I appreciate the free shipping code because everything I want is new and full price.

    ReplyDelete
  25. anon @ 10:55--right now promos and big markdowns are the only things making people buy in this economy. Inventory sitting in j.crew's warehouse is not going to help the losing money issue. I think they would prefer that people buy at a discount than not buy at all.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anon 10:55 Thanks for that obvious suggestion/information!

  27. anon@11.36: I have three orders from Sat morning still saying submitted. There's a glitch in the system and CS is going to have to manually release the orders now. Why can't they get things to work at JC????

  28. Anon @11:47: I have the Spring Dots Nicky skirt and LOVE it! I'm planning to wear it with my Cashmere Sequin Shell in Heather Wheat and Almond Juliet Midheels. The only drawback is that it is unlined, and will require wearing a slip or having lining sewn in (which is what I plan to do). Btw...I sized up in order to gain a little bit of length, because it's not as long IRL as it is on the model in the picture on the website.

    ReplyDelete
  29. FFM: Are the Juliet heels TTS and comfy? TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  30. ugh. i am so sad that i missed the free shipping with no minimum code.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well, if JCrew lost BIG money this holiday season that aren't doing well now with the final sale stuff just sitting there basically. A lot less has made a company go under...it could likely happen to JCrew depending on how low the economy is depressed. I for one was Never a full priced shopper and won't be anytime soon even though my financial situation is looking better and better. It is just clothes after all.

Plus, there is no way I would pay what JCRew is asking for the Nicky skirt that in unlined. Good god--I can't imagine wearing a slip or having to pay more to get it lined in order to wear it. No thanks. It is not that orginal or cute!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Anon @12:00! I think the Almond Juliets do run TTS, but the Safari Juliets feel a little bit smaller for some reason. I haven't worn the Almond Juliets for any extended period of time yet (just got them Saturday), so I can't comment as to comfort level on them. However, I have worn the Safari Juliets, and while they are tolerable, I would not call them comfortable. They are both SUPER CUTE though and extremely versatile! HTH! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thank you so much FFM, I can always count on you for great feedback on items. I can have a lining sewn in, not a big deal. I don't mind if it's a little bit short either, I prefer skirts to hit above the knee, rather than right on the knee. 20" should be about perfect.

If you all are waiting for a promo, I'll let you know when I place my order. Seems as soon as I place a full price order, there is a promo within 24-48 hrs. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anon 12:08 - I had a Benetton skirt very similar to the Nicky and I wore that thing until it was worn right out. It may not be original or that cute, but it is definitely versatile and without a lining it would be cool enough for hot summer days.

I should say it is a versatile style for me, it may not work for everyone. Also, for me it is very inexpensive at full price, even with shipping and a lining added. I look forward to wearing it in the print and at least one color. Now I just have to decide which I like best.

    ReplyDelete
  35. What are everyones thoughts on the Aubrey jacket and the chunky handknit cardigan?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Let's all agree to not buy anything until J.Crew offers a % off promo? It's not even February! Unless someone is going on vacation no reason to buy any spring items now. ;) I have a feeling their next *big* promo will be something with a name like VALENTINE....

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like the leather sandals with the flower, although I've found similar leather sandals I have purchased from J.Crew to be very slippery, especially on wood or composite decks. I had to put rubber on the soles as they become very polished after a brief wearing and it's just like teflon! Zing!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I tried the Aubrey jacket in navy on last week and it is cute with jeans, but yet another boxy jacket, so I passed.

    ReplyDelete
  39. If JC lost a boat load of money at Christmas, it would have certainly lost more if it had not done the promotions they did!!

I think we may not see a Resort/Spring promotion for a couple more weeks. Some of that roll-out may already be selling at FP to those who are still vacationing in warm spots this winter. Plus, they still need to off-load all those sweaters!

  40. Anon 12:42 - hahaha! This blog is more able enabling, not restraining.

    ReplyDelete

  42. I envy all you 5'3"-5'7" ladies, because the skirts, (and many of the coats) are mostly being designed for you. Most of us want a skirt that hits at the knee for the most versatility, and as I am the same height as the models, they all hit above the knee on me. I have actually seen skirts described on the site as 'knee length' when accompanied by a picture of a model wearing the skirt, and showing it to be 3" or so inches above her knee. The Nicky skirt is cute, but at 20" is too short for my style. I also wanted the Shipley coat, but it's tunic length on me.

J Crew-please offer skirts for Talls in 23"-24" lengths! We tall girls want knee length skirts too!

  43. Gosh! I kinda liked that t-shirt. The graphic on it is the Swahili phrase for 'safe journey" and I loved that just because I speak Swahili. Ah, well:)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I like quite a few of Jenna's pics, the trench, cardi, necklaces, and flats. I am disappointing so far in the spring color palette. I love jasmine, champagne, shell, and maybe salmon. But all the greens, yellows and blues especially in the cashmere are not appealing to me

    ReplyDelete
  45. I do not like the color palette this Spring, they make me look washed out, I am hoping for better colors in the Summer rollout.

There are a couple of Jenna picks that I like, I will hold out until next month to buy few of the basics.

  48. I like the bikini. The color would look great with a tan.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tall Anon, I am also tall, but perhaps shorter than you at only 5'10" and I have long limbs. So thankful for the tall sizes, when available. Sometimes I will size up in order to let a skirt or pants sit lower to get extra length. If that doesn't work I'll wear with tonal hosiery so it doesn't look as revealing.

I like the 20" length of the Nicky skirt as it has a schoolgirlish look about it, which means it should be a little short IMO. A lot of people were buying the silk taffeta skirt in a similar style on FS recently. The copy read that it sat low on the waist but I'm not sure how it fit.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anon at 12:09 PM: Too funny! I feel like that happens to me too! I will hold out for a promo, wait until feel like my item will sell out, finally pull the trigger, and then the next day the promo I've been waiting for appears. :)

  51. anon 11:36 - I have an order from last week that still shows as released (except for 2 items that show as cancelled). it's frustrating.

lillian - thanks for the translation on the safari shirt. I wouldn't let the FART thing stop you from buying it. I didn't notice the FART thing until it was pointed out.

  52. OMG - I forgot my comments about the picks. The only one I really like a lot is the travel trench. I'm going to try to get that, but I won't pay full price.
I agree with everyone that says that the new palette will wash them out. The pastels are horrid on me and even some of the neutrals make me look ghostly. I love the way the neutrals look to my eye, but this fall I bought 3 tops in champagne thinking I would love such a warm neutral color and I returned them all. I'm hoping I can wear stone, because I ordered a scoop neck on FS.
Last thing - I also want the nolita jean jacket.

    ReplyDelete
  53. haus_frau - I agree w.your comment about J Crew needing to show versaility. Instead of just showing the usual array of colors that an item comes in, they should do some layouts concentrating on mixing and matching. Not that I want to see all of us out in the world in the same outfits & color combos, but it would be nice to get some ideas to try new combos.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm not a big fan of pastels as they are not flattering to my pale complexion but I can usually brighten them up with a cardi, jacket, scarf or jewelry. I have silk scarves that have a few pastel shades in with some vibrant colors and since it won't get really hot for some time, I'll be wearing a scarf for the next few months.

I'm from France originally and scarves have always been part of my wardrobe. It's really part of French culture that women wear scarves. The pastels can make a pretty background for a bold accent piece. If you don't wear scarves, this is the perfect season to give it a try. There are many websites that show how to tie in a myriad of ways, there is sure to be one that suits you and the shape of scarf you like. It's fun to pair different scarves with outfits and it can actually give you a bit of warmth as well.

J.Crew usually has scarves on offer each season and I have purchased several. I especially love the linen blends for summer. Very comfortable and chic. Of course, if you don't like the colors, you don't like the colors, but keep an open mind to how they may fit into your wardrobe quite nicely.

    ReplyDelete
  55. ^ how the spring colors can fit into your wardrobe, that is.

  56. I notice the Travel Trench is quite short and has bracelet-length sleeves. For those who have purchased it, does it feel like it is a bit small by design? I'm just not sure I'd like a jacket that is so short and has shorter sleeves. Especially a trench.

    TIA

    ReplyDelete
  57. Anon-I'm 5'4" and on me the trench is not short and does not have bracelet sleeve in the regular size. The sleeve are actually a little too long on me.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hi fellow tall girl/1:58- The skirt is cute shorter, just not for me. I'm 5' 10" too, which is about the average for J Crew models. I have no doubt a shorter skirt looks great on the tall girls, but my style is fairly subdued, and as I'm sure you know, short skirts get you a lot of attention. I'm just asking for a tall option when they bring out 'the skirt of the season'.....it doesn't have to be every skirt. It just seems like they are doing so many of the skirts at 21" or so, and there's only so many 'fun flirty' skirts I would need. *Anon 12:55

  59. Anon 12:42 - I'm with you, I was thinking the next promocode might be CUPID. :) But reading these other blog posts, now I'm thinking it might be FART hahahaha, that would be too great!

  60. dani_california, I desperately want the jean jacket too, but if it comes in a non-faded wash. I love the pintucks in the front. I had a dark jean jacket exactly like that for my two year old from baby Gap last year and have been on the lookout for one for me ever since. Only two and she's already cooler than me!

  61. hi shannon, would you mind commenting on the fit for the travel trench? tia!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anon 12:55 - I hear you about the skirt of the season being offered in a tall size. And yes, short skirts get a lot of attention which is why I mentioned the tonal hosiery. Not the same as a longer length, but being tall sometimes you need to find the tricks that make regular sizes work as I'm sure you know. I think J.Crew is pretty good about offering tall and petite sizes, all things considered. They could always do better but it could certainly be worse.

I don't know if Nicky would be the skirt of the season for everyone. I think it's just me and FFM so far. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  63. The FART shirt is a great example of concept to execution failure. It's a beautiful, elegant concept, but when you lay it out on a mannequin, a huge percentage of viewers see FART due to the placement of the lettering. I applaud the effort though. The Swahili statement itself is lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anon 3:34- J Crew is calling it The Skirt of The Season. If you look at the item description-it's there. I hear you on the hosiery, but here in California, nobody wears it, especially with a spring skirt. I definitely hear you on trying to make the regular sizes work....I remember wearing a lot of 'floodish' pants-Thank goodness for J Crew pants assortment-I love them for pants!

    ReplyDelete
  67. To the taller girl wanting skirts for tall women: I don't know if they're going to expand height-related sizes, since they didn't have any petite skirts for January. In fact, I think they've drastically limited their non-average sizes in the past few months. I've written to J.Crew and am currently awaiting a reply. Will keep J.Crew fans posted.

  68. I love the Nicky skirt too. Sucks that it is unlined though because it is a litte see through. It looks freakin adorable with the Jasmine scoop neck tee though. I will probably buy it when it goes on sale.

Anon 3:20-In a nutshell, I had to size up to a 2 because the arm holes were too small and high in my usual size. It was also a little small in the bust. I have some errands to run but I am going to try and get a full review with irl pics up on my blog this evening

    ReplyDelete
  69. I actually am a huge fan of the Nicky too. I'm on the shorter side- about 5'4" and it hits me just above the knee, which in my opinion is actually a perfect (and still professional) length.

Also, I bought the Nicky at my B&M in 'dark fog'. I just did a search online and it looks like they are only offering it in the dot, yellow, pink, and navy. Some of those are really bright, but the dark fog seemed much more versatile to me. Maybe it will be online later?

Also, I got a shorter version of the "shoreline" dress. This is something else that I wasn't able to find online. It's identical to the long shoreline, only hits at the knee. Even better, it was already on-sale! I had been eyeing it for a few weeks and was willing to spend $78 on it, but it turned out to be only $29 on sale after the 30%. What a deal!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I am guessing the next promo with be 20% off everything...but it won't be until next Month... two weeks or so after more new arrivals end of this month.

  71. 12:55 - when I lived in Manhattan Beach, I wore nylons and people looked at me like I was from Mars so I know what you mean that no one wears hosiery in California. It's colder here and I work in a conservative office so hosiery is de rigeur all year round. I would like to wear the Nicky skirt with tonal hosiery for casual Friday. We can't wear jeans or even corduroy, but I think Nicky would be OK if done right. We'll see. ;) If not, I can always wear to lunch with my MIL.

Lindsay, thank you for the info on the Nicky in dark fog. I would love it in grey as well. I was going to get navy and spring dots but perhaps will just get the navy and hold out for grey in the coming months. J.Crew often will add a new line of colors for an existing item, after the initial offering. I'm in Canada so I can't take a quick trip to the B&M and most of our travel is not to the U.S. so it's all online for me. Nice to get a peek at the B&Ms through JCA.

And thanks to you who have mentioned it IS the skirt of the season. A case of missing the obvious, I suppose. I just saw it and fell in love.

  74. FFM and others,
I ordered the Spring dots Nicky skirt on the red phone at B&M store last week. I had tried one on, but wanted to size up, as it sat too high on my waist. BUT, I didn't notice if it was see through or not!!

I was planning on taking to a warmer (very sunny!) climate at the e nd of the month, so I appreciate your warning....but one question.

How do they sew in a lining, is it easy to have done, expensive? I am used to alterations, but this one is new to me.

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The color palette isn't only JCrew's... the fashion merchandising world seems to have decided that the pales and nudes are 'it' for Spring 09. Notice the Golden Globes last night? The majority of celebs wore the light, nude, neutral palette? I am aware that they have stylists. There was black here and there. Maybe one or two deep purples...but the majority wore the nude colors...

    JenG.

    ReplyDelete
  76. PS. I can't pull off the nudes either! Too washed out looking. Bummer!

    ReplyDelete
  77. 4:41 - sewing in a lining is not that difficult. They create the lining based on the pattern of the skirt - Nicky has pleats so there should be some fullness/ease to the lining as well. Then they can take apart the waistband and stitch it in, around the zipper as well, then close the waistband. Or they can stitch it right to the existing waistband and leave it hang with an opening for the zipper.

I had a favorite coat re-lined once. It was very well done and didn't cost much considering I got another 5+ years use out of the coat. Eventually the wool showed its age a bit so I gave it to goodwill hoping it might keep someone less particular warm.

Now it is looking like Nicky will be popular. I will put in my order today.

  78. This is totally off-topic but I just noticed that we're getting a Madewell in Boston (329 Newbury - listed as "coming soon"). I'm super excited!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. The solid Nicky is almost exactly like a skirt that JCrew had out a couple of summers ago. I am sitting here looking at mine and I can't believe how simiar they are...I got mine for under $10 on super sale. so will pass on the NIcky. I don't care for the print one at all.

I noticed the nude shades on the Golden Globes and thought everyone looked so washed out and boring. It seemed to hide all the beautiful detailing in the dresses are well when they are so nude in color. Drew Barymore looked great--loved her dress and hair. Otherwise, I liked all the jewel toned and red dresses.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Can someone tell me what the "short" shoreline dress comes in? I am unable to go to a store, but it sounds like a dress I would like to order from a store. TIA

    ReplyDelete
  81. Anon 5:30 - I think the Nicky is a fairly classic look that comes around every few seasons. There was a silk version available on FS recently too. Marked down to $19.99 so I'll bet the same fate awaits Nicky...

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hey Anon@ 6:00. I saw the "short" shoreline in B&M's in NYC and Nashville. Both stores only had it in a dark brown and bright orange. I believe it's the same color brown, called "chocolate" seen on the long shoreline online. It's a great dress, and it's almost 40% off!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Tall sisters I feel your pain.
I too wish they offered their items-of-the-seasons in taller sizes (couple of cardis, dresses and skirts). I love that some swimsuits, pants and the shirts are available in the longer lengths. It doesn't have to be everything but those pieces they're going to promote the hell out of and build on would be great.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Lindsay -

Did the j. crew you went to have the longer shoreline dress too, and did you happen to notice if it was also on sale? I am going on a warm vacation soon, and would really like to get a long knit dress before I go...but the J. Crew near me does not have the shoreline to see IRL. Thanks!

  85. Hey, I don't think my B&M here in Nashville has the long shoreline. And when I was in NYC I only remember seeing the short one as well. However, if you're just hoping to try it on for fit, I think trying on the short one will tell you instantly whether it works or not- it's the exact same dress just missing 20" of length~

  86. There were a couple orange and brown short shorelines at the Barton Creek B&M in Austin on Saturday. No clue if they are still there, but think they were 49.99 plus 30% off. I know there was at least one small.

  87. So, it seems as if a handful of bloggers are independently wealthy. I am trying hard to curb my spending by waiting for sales, free shipping, and holding out for *needs*. ;) Are many of you immune to the financial crisis in our country? Just wondering...

  88. Hi everyone-

Just want to review my new tawny olive velvet Ecole.

Wow, what an absolutely gorgeous, unique color. I love it. I have light brown hair and porcelain skin, and it looks fab! I think it would look even better on a blond. The velvet is thick and soft.

In the land of J Crew, I am a size 5, which doesn't exist, so I always have to accept a non custom fit. I am a 6 in the shoulders, and a 4 in the waist and bust, so I got a 6T and it is comfortable and not tight in the shoulders, but I have extra room in the waist. I can live with that, as it's always the way it is for me. I briefly though about exchanging for a 4T, but I did the arms stretched forward test, and there's no way. I do have extra room under the arms and waist, but thats OK Especially for 59$!

Overall, my favorite thing about this is the casual elegance,(an overused term, but perfect for this item) the folded back cuffs, and the GORGEOUS olive velvet. It's way prettier than it looks online.

  89. Anon at 7:13 -- I echo your love for the tawny olive velvet École. I LOVE the color. I have skin that looks like it's at least lightly tanned year-round and dark hair, and I love the way it looks on me. I too think it would look fantastic on lighter-haired JCAs.

  90. Thanks kitchy7! So far it looks beautiful with dark and mid tint denim and chocolate cords. I'm sure it's going to look great with many things. The color makes it dressed up, but not so formal. Thanks for your ideas last week btw. 7:13

  91. I don't really care what fashion trends and JCrew say on this one, ladies - I HATE nude tones. I look terrible in them, as my skin is a light olive tone. Most nudes just leave me looking corpse like and so do most pastels...so, I will be passing up all of the pale colors and nudes this spring.

  92. I'm a fair-haired JCA and I also bought the olive ecole. I absolutely love the color. It's very rich, especially in the velvet material. I ordered my regular size and it's pretty fitted. I guess I could have gone up, but I think the look of this jacket is to be fitted. Gorgeous color...I highly recommend!!

  93. Boots, I don't think anyone is totally immune. For some, it may not have had an impact yet or maybe not enough to change behavior.

Personally, my husband and I both have family money and excellent careers. He is a professional athlete and we expect he may be impacted when the next round of contract negotiations take place. Reality is that his career will end soon enough so we're quite prudent for people in our financial position and have done a lot of planning. This year we scaled back on our upcoming spring vacation as well, but we did not decrease our charitable activities and contributions.

I know some of my husband's teammates and their wives spend ridiculous amounts of money, as if it were a steady flow from a tap that will never shut off. I think it is because they have never had wealth so don't know how to manage it and just look at it with the view of all the things they can buy.

I could spend a lot more than I do but I was raised to live reasonably. Our life would be considered luxury by most but you would never know it if you saw us on the street. Always properly groomed and well-dressed in quality clothing but never anything flashy, nothing to excess. I enjoy J.Crew because they have fun pieces, it is so easy to shop online and it's really inexpensive for me. I realize that is not the case for most people and if I could change the world to be more fair, I would. I'm sure that the life you live would also be considered luxury by many people right here in North America and certainly around the world. It is smart of you to evaluate your purchases and live within your budget. Many people do not and debt makes them poorer with each passing year.

Probably not what you wanted to hear right now but reality is that there are always those who have more than we and there are always those who have less. Appreciate what you do have, blessings come in many forms. We've had many challenges in our lives, money does not make things perfect. If we were to lose everything tomorrow, my husband and I would give each other a big hug, sit down and begin planning our next step.

  94. Leslie, I bet that olive Ecole looks great on you. It sounds like it works beautifully on many different colorings.....it's like the stealth great color nobody talked about. Enjoy!

  95. Hi Alexis and all other JCAs. I just purchased the Ingrid peep toe heels in Navy. I like them a lot. They came with a dust bag to store them which is a first for me on shoe orders that I have placed at J. Crew. I put them on and I felt they are TTS. I normally wear a size 9 and these fit great. I also have a narrow foot. The heel is skinnier than most heels I have, but is also lower at 3" so I didn't find it hard to walk. The sole is completely smooth so it is going to need some scuffing before I wear them out. I found the ankle strap to be a bit tight. I had to put it on the last hole on one foot, second to last hole on the other. I'm not sure who has a foot tiny enough to put it on the first hole but I'm sure some do. These shoes do show toe cleavage so those who do not like this feature would probably not be happy with these shoes. It personally doesn't bother me so it wasn't an issue. The fabric is linen like and the navy is a true navy. I think these are going to look great with jeans and skirts this summer. Definitely a keeper for me.

  96. OT: Dear FFM, I was wondering whether you would be willing to create sets with Merino turtleneck in melon and waffle henley t-shirts in majestic blue? I couldn't find any sets with those items on polyvore :(

Thank you so much for the help in advance!!

    ReplyDelete
  97. OT: I just ordered the Silk Taffeta Doll Dress in Deep Indigo and I was wondering if anyone (FFM perhaps?) could recommend shoes and/or a handbag to go with it? I was thinking some type of strappy sandals/heels in silver... any ideas would be appreciated...TIA!

  98. Anonymous at 8:33. Call one of the stores and have them deliver the Navy Ingrid peep toes to you. They are I think $189.99 with %30 off, so much cheaper than online. King of Prussia PA store had them last week, or find a store closer to you.

  99. I have to say I'm happy that J. Crew is switching to more neutral colors for a time. I have a closet full of brightly colored, beautiful but hard-to-match pieces from the 2008 collections!

Like many aficionadas, I am a sale shopper who loves a good bargain, and the neutral colors always seem to disappear first when an item goes on sale. I'm hoping that a focus on neutrals for '09 will give me a chance to better round out my wardrobe with some more versatile items while staying within my means.

  100. I don't personally like any of her choices. I am favoring pastels over bright colors for spring right now... and I kind of like the chain/ribbon necklace but it's a must see in person type of item. I was disappointed with the new stuff in general and am waiting to see more.

  104. I am personally not a fan of neutrals and pastels - yuck. One of the things I love about J. Crew is their vibrant colors!! I am so mad too b/c I have about $150 in gift cards to spend and can't find anything I love...

  105. Hmmm....I only noticed the tee saying SAFARI, not fart...???

  106. I love the color palette--I think it looks really delicate and pretty--but I'm not sure how well it would work against my skin tone. I'm pretty pale, and I feel like a lot of it would just wash me out!

  107. went to my B&M tonight...
    1. maybe you all already know this, but they said they have a floor set and are getting new stuff next week

    2. i was the ONLY person in the store! no shoppers! at ALL! they said it has been slow the last few days. do i see a sale in our future??

  108. O/T but had to share....my order from Friday early am, that was in "released" status since Friday afternoon has a tracking number!! Whoo hooo! And...to top it off, it's a few "hard to find" items (storybook bracelet, serengeti clutch and the blue flower ring). Now, let's hope they are actually in the box. I'm thinking since they are all pretty small items, one would have to been drunk, stoned or completely stupid to not get them in the box.

Also, I just noticed a new JC ring in the Feb. issue of InStyle. I know many of you don't like their jewelry, but I'm a fan. I absolutely LOVE their rings and will be snagging this one as soon as it shows up (maybe with the next rollout?)

  111. My must-have:
White matchstick-jeans -perfect to wear now tucked into a pair of boots -think: long Glenbrea in sandalwood-
    My leave-it:
The Chiffon pleated Cardi, it's pretty but snags too easily.

  112. to tall anonymous; I agree, it would be lovely to have a bit of extra length on the skirts and dresses sometimes.
to joangee; I personally looove the Chunky Knit Cardigan, looks like a piece you'd wear a lot! The Aubrey Jacket looks great on the more petite frame, very classic.

  114. Just received my spring dot Nicky and I am sad to say it is going back. I am usually a 2 in JCrew's pencil skirt and a 2 or 0 in their A-Line and full skirt and ordered a 0. It is 18 1/2 inch as opposed to 20 inch long. While I do like the shape of it, it is too short (above my knee)and the material feels flimsy and a bit see through so a slip or lining is definitely necessary. If it goes on sale I will get the 2 but $88 is a bit too much.

  115. I got to see the Look Book in store tonight and I really like what's coming! I actually like the accessories and shoes even better than the clothing choices. There are lots of cute sandals coming, as well as some cute bags. Also lots of jewelry in the new colors. The theme is definitely safari; the new graphic tee has a zebra image (assuming this is one of the items that made it to production). I was told new items will be arriving Weds, Saturday and next Monday.

PS - I would have loved to have taken the book and scanned for all to see, but they wouldn't even let me hold it, let alone take it!

  116. Boots,
It does seem like most of the people of this blog are independently wealthy and have unlimited funds but I also bet there are people who also have huge credit card debtt. I too wait for sales and free shipping. I have gotten so many pairs of JCrew pants over the last 5 years for $10--25 dollars in denim and cotton and even wool. So I wait...the deals come and my closet is huge and packed with JCrew steals and deals...I don't buy full price and even though my husband is doing well in his job we do not increase how we budget for say clothing, food, etc. Happy Bargain hunting and waiting for coupon codes:)

  117. Boots,

P.S. It also seems like most people on this blog are size 0, 2 or 4 and we all know that is not the norm so don't use this blog to judge "the real world"

    Take care!

  120. I'm interested to see if the crisp celery color works for me- it's very pretty on the page.

OT: I need some JCA advice, please, about an incident at a BM store. I've found that I've come back to thinking about it a couple of times, so I would like to know if I need to say something to the staff there or just get over it. Last week I tried on a few final sale pieces and a couple of the new resort items. The only thing I wanted was, sadly, a sweater that turned out to be a bit too snug and badly snagged to boot. I thought to myself that all I accomplished was mussing my hair- it was very dry and static-y in there! I attempted a quick fix to my hair and thanked the associate even though nothing worked for me. Out of pure conscientiousness I pointed out the flaw in the sweater so it wouldn't go back onto the salesfloor. Anyway, I walked toward the exit, but right before leaving I stopped for a second look at the new arrivals. I looked up because I was startled by rather loud laughter, especially for the distance, because it was coming from the fitting room doorway. The male associate who assisted me and a female associate were both laughing, and I heard him say "use some AquaNet to control that" then continue laughing. Because few people were in the store, I couldn't help but think they were laughing at my expense. I don't want to be paranoid or vengeful, but I think that's really inappropriate, and I would like JCA's advice on whether or not it would be going to far to contact the store about that.

    Thanks for listening!

    ReplyDelete
  121. Someone else posted on this blog, that the SAs laughed behind customers back when they left the store. That is inappropriate behavor and I would voice a complaint but the question is to who? Were the SA management? You could always contact head office. Sorry to hear about your experience.

  125. Anon at 1:13 PM on Tues: I find that story about JCrew Associates mocking a customer disturbing. It is completely inappropriate, like Casual_Crew stated. I would take out the time and call or email J.Crew to let them know. You will most likely get a call from the store manager who will apologize, but at least those employees will be aware that their actions were heard and inexcusable.

I want to also add quickly, that those JCrew Associates are completely unprofessional and do NOT represent the majority of associates that represent J.Crew. I have to say, even in spite of the system upgrade, J.Crew's customer service and associates are some of the best in the retail business. I hope the incident does not cloud your overall impression of a truly great, customer-focus, firm. :)

  127. I don't think anyone needs to discuss or justify their spending habits here. Personal finances are no one's business. Mind your own affairs.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Anon 1:13,

The only problem is that you overheard a scrap of a conversation from across the store. Are you sure enough that they were mocking you to make a complaint?

I know that I have been falsely accused of saying something that I didn't by someone who jumped to conclusions and it is not fun to be on the receiving end.

I would complain if you are positive that they were 1) referring to you and 2) saying something derogatory.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I just read part of the inappropriate behavior comments and coincidentally, similar happened today in the store. There was a customer who had a more than usual number of questions regarding the on sale items and sounded a little bossy. When she turned her back walking out of the store, the associates made funny faces to each other...

    ReplyDelete
  130. Anon @ 7:07, I have decided to write to the store. I have included a pretty detailed description of the scenario, and cited that it's not impossible that I misinterpreted. What makes me think they were in fact talking about me is that I thought my hair had become horribly static-frizzed out, and the comment was about using hairspray to "control that". It could be a case of me being self-conscious, but those words were distinct, and it's a pretty big coincidence. Yes, my hair was funny, and I do have a sense of humor about myself, but it's not any store associate's job to make fun of it for me. I'll let the store management decide if my observations merit questioning the associates.

Thanks again for everyone's input. I'll let you know the result of my letter to the store.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I think you made the right call in writing the store. Even if they weren't talking about you but some other customer, it's still unprofessional, and most importantly, it made you feel bad. Maybe you can prevent the next person from feeling the same way. And for J. Crew's part, if store associates make customers or potential customers feel bad, they're not going back again. Not good for future sales. I'm sorry you had to hear that. :(
