J.Crew's October 2014 Catalog on Pinterest

"Thanks!" to many of you, including unknown (in this post), who let us know that there are several images from the October 2014 catalog on Pinterest. (Click here for J.Crew on Pinterest.)

 * Love this image from the women's side.

* Love this look too. Swap out the sneakers for Cece Ballet Flats and I am wearing this!

The Good: The Crewcuts section is such fun to look through. I love the images which are all so beautiful. Those kids are so darn cute and stylish! The Men's images are just breathtaking. The men are gorgeous and the clothes are styled to perfection.

The Meh. The women's images are overall meh for me even though there are lots of pieces I am excited about, like: the seafoam Melton Toggle Coat, the Buffalo Check Flannel Shirt, the Houndstooth Scarf, and the Sleeveless in Graphic Plaid Top. I like the location, and the models are beautiful, it's just that I am not crazy about most of the styling. There are only a handful of images I really like (in terms of styling). Which is weird, because I do love most of the styles on the store mannequins. Go figure!

The catalog is already available in J.Crew stores. Plus, it is being shipped out to customers via snail mail.

Word among several JCAs is that the next roll out of new arrivals will be available online for Wednesday. Brick & mortar stores will have items on the floor this Monday.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming collection? Are there any pieces you are super excited about? Does your local store carry any of the new arrivals yet? If so, please share!

  1. Alright alright alright. Digging the ladies coats. Can sweatpant pants die already?! I feel like Stacy London and Clinton Kelly need to stage an intervention at J. Crew headquarters.

Those blue wedges are fab. But then again I am a shoe whore. Where are the jewels?!?!

    1. Susan - I'll bet you 500 J. Crew Rewards (that expire too soon because there's nothing anyone likes) that those kickin' blue wedges are "models own."

  2. I don't need another coat, but I love looking at them. These look great. Boo on the continuing sweats trend. Most people aren't going to look like they were styled for a catalog. I don't know why looking like you rolled out of bed is an aim for some people. Get a little spiffy. Look a little good. I don't care to see how you look in your bedroom when we're out in public. Yes to the houndstooth scarf. Last year's was burgundy based. This one looks nice, too.

    1. I went to J.Crew on Labor Day evening. I was taken aback when a young woman in the store asked me if I needed any help. I thought she was a customer and definitely not a SA. She was wearing a t-shirt, sweatpants, a messy bun and flip-flops. I was really surprised. I've always liked the way they styled the sweatpants but I've often wondered how many people could actually pull it off. Maybe if she had been wearing a blazer and heels. Hmm . . .

    2. I will only wear sweatpants at home. This trend is way over done at JCrew
This guide is like the sept. one....boring to the point of nausea.

    3. I don't need another coat either, but I've never met a J. Crew bomber jacket that I didn't instantly want and the leather trim mixed bomber jacket (B1034) is no exception.

    4. I'm not into the track pant thing, either. I do like the gray sweatshirt with the stenciled design on it. I could probably do that myself though. :-) Maybe part of the blah of the images is because there really isn't a lot of color going on? The styling seems to lack pizazz.

  3. On the sweatpants topic: I did rock the jcrew sweatpants thang right after popping out my son and my mom was all like, "You're going out....dressed like that?" And I was a bit miffed but then later that night I said to myself, "really. Honestly. Sweatpants are intended for cleaning the house or if I'm 99.9 percent sure that I am stuck in my humble abode and that not even the UPS man is stopping by." But I don't know. Broads roll around town in their high-faultin workout gear, too. So, what do I know? This is totally stressing me out. Ha.

    1. I would maybe do a quick trip to the grocery store in sweats but that would be the farthest I would go...but then again I like to dress up when travelling (flying) so ..

  4. Yawn. Agreeing with you ladies and some who have mentioned that the styling on the store mannequins are much better than the catalog.

Ah, (sigh), I lost hope for these style guides. While the beach is a pretty landscape, I don't think its a right location to showcase the clothes. The clothes are gray, creams, and navy, and the beach is also the same; gray, sad, and overcast.
I like the hooded trim parka jacket, and I can't even tell from the picture how the jacket looks.
I'll just wait for Wednesday to see the pics online, or at the store.

    1. I think you're right about the landscape, it's lacking color. Remember some of the previous Fall/Winter rollouts in such locations as Scotland? Lush.

  5. Will be going back on diet to fit Crewcuts 14 better.

As for most of the Women's -- finally figured it out after studying the lonely rocky beach. the October 2014 catalog shots, I mean, not life.

Most of the models look like extras waiting to do the background of a scene on Game of Thrones. It's the uniform center-parted slicked-back hair, although that red and blue Stadium Cloth Hooded Coat has a lot to answer for. The two-toned gray is definitely part of the uniform of a server in a cavern. Or tavern.

If they'd only knocked off Arya's leather jerkin from when she first went on the road! That I loved!

    1. Arya's jerkin is in the Crew Cut section.

For adults, since it's the winter season, they are doing a long fur coat a la John Snow.

Maybe you won't have to diet: Crewcuts now has size 16! Depending on the item, this corresponds to size XS or 0.

  6. Does anyone know which blazer is being shown in the look with the Sleeveless Graphic Plaid top? Minus the Harem pants, I like the whole look.

    1. It's called the Tipped Schoolboy Blazer in Gray. You can call the preorder number and find out more info w/o having to preorder anything. I do that all the time. HTH!

    2. Thanks, Wendy! That's good to know. I don't want to pre-order anything, but having the info. would be really great. Do they have sizing information, too?

      Delete
    3. Yes, they have sizing info and other colors a particular item comes in. It's very helpful. I've never ordered from the number; just gathered info so I can budget accordingly. The VPS are always SUPER NICE AND HELPFUL!

    4. Oh, they also have pricing info too!

    5. Great, that's really good to know. Thanks again, Wendy.

  7. I still want that blue cocoon coat, ugh... it's coming any day now in a smaller size than the first one I tried. Why does it look good on the model but not on me? (eternal but rhetorical question, I know the answer!) Maybe the smaller size will be better. I want all the coats on this post, the colors are great. I've tried the duffle coat in the past but returned because it was too much coat on me. I wish my stores got more coats in, I hate buying and returning something so heavy, but their coats are one of the things I love most from J. Crew so I order one to try every now and then anyway.

    1. did you have to size down from your reg. JCrew coat size for the cocoon?

    2. I just got the blue cocoon coat. I ordered the petite 2, which is what I wear in the School boy blazer. I think the fit is good, although I don't have another JC coat to compare it with. HTH

    3. see I take a 12 in the blazer but have the cocoon (from last year ) in a 10. Is this years different ?

      Delete
    4. The description on the website describes the changes that they made to this year's coat. This is the first year that I have tried the cocoon, so I can't say how it differs from previous iterations.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

  8. Does anyone else feel like J. Crew could take their October offerings and mix them up and style them differently to make them look great, like something from a catalog a few years ago? I can attest to the fact that J Crew sold sweatpants a few years ago (I have them and love them but wear them as sweatpants, not fashion). There are some really nice things they are selling now, if they'd only change up the styling it would be much prettier and more feminine. Just swap out the sweatpants and graphic tees for something else in the rollout and there you go. The style guide could have been so good.

    1. my J Crew "saturday pants" are still going strong. But I never wear them out of the house. They are sweatpants in case anyone doesn't remember the saturday pants.

    2. I love my Saturday Pants and I wear them out from time to time, when it is cold. I feel like, if I style them well, they look cute. I have kids and it is important to me to be comfortable without looking like I have given up.

  9. Oh great, now I'm coat obsessed. :)

  10. that teal toggle coat is amazing. there's a similar coat at boden that they've been offering the past few years (i hope they will sell it again this winter).

  11. I like the length of this year's cocoon coat. Last year I bought regular size but had to have the sleeves shortened. This year the petite fit perfectly. J Crew really does such a great job with winter coats. The colors are gorgeous. Alas my closets are stuffed already.

    1. This year's petite coat measures almost an 1 3/4 inches longer than last year's in the petite size. This year's petite is longer than last year's regular. I took the measurements from the center back seam.

  12. The last thing I need is another coat, but coats are one of the few JC items that I just cannot resist. Plus, I just took about half a dozen coats to consignment last week, so I will make room on my coat rack for the wool melton duffle in thistle. Yes, I do have a pink coat (or two), but none in this *particular* pink, and none with a hood, and my size was already on low inventory...

Also got the wildlife trust elephant tees and sweatshirts for me and daughter. Promos don't apply, but I didn't see any of this in-store, and according to the website, 100% of the *net* proceeds go to the charity. I rarely see that, anywhere...

  13. Except for the sweatpants, on the whole I would say I REALLY liked a lot of the pieces and how they're styled in the women's section!! Really psyched for the new arrivals!

  14. love the sweatpants/trackpant trend and i love the current on-trend styling. Fashion is suppose to change year to year. how boring and mundane life would be if everyone wore khakis and wool slacks every single year. Fashion is about trying different things and styling them differently. It's about personal and artistic expression. Besides, j crew only showed sweatpants in about 4 pictures and they sell every other style of pant. The drapey wool sweatpants are so comfortable and beautiful on. They look like normal wool pants besides the bottom, which most people won't even notice. I'd rather see sweatpants with heels any day, rather than a graphic tee, khakis or leggings on most women. J crew is going to style their catalogs/style guides to reflect the current trends in fashion, but they still offer all the basics. No, not everyone can pull off this look, but not everyone can pull off a pencil skirt either- it doesn't mean it's ugly. I've seen many women wearing this sweatpant trend that look absolutely gorgeous and dressier than 90% of the people on the street. It's all how you style it. If you put it on with a graphic tee and gym shoes it's not good, but no pants will look good. If you put them on with a silk blouse, blazer and heels, it looks fantastic. I see more people in jeans that look awful. Again, it all comes down to styling, accessories and confidence.

    1. I would mostly agree, except to your "styling, accessories and confidence", I would add, "your shape". The current loose on top/tapered pant/no defined waist is a poor silhouette for pear-shaped women with small waists - the smallest part of your body is hidden.

Fashion does this - cycles through shapes that flatter different types. And I think this particular shape is terrible for me (and for many other women - I don't exactly have a rare body type). As with everything, take a good look at yourself, and if it doesn't look good, skip it. Wait for the next turn of the fashion wheel (it will turn, it always does).

    3. Point taken about the possibility of track pants and sweats being on trend, and that fashion always cycles. The issue I think many JCAs have a problem with is a potential violation of dress code. Many offices don't allow jeans, let alone sweatsuit attire no matter how snazzy. Past J. Crew merchandise and corresponding catalogs showcased fresh, stylish takes on looks that could easily be worn to the office without fear of being sent home. It's not easy to simply swap out the sweatpants for a different bottom. A lot of the tops are baggy, without seams to create any sort of shape, not to mention the dropped shoulders. The company excels at freshening up staples. If those were also available, that would balance out the pervasive sweats + Adidas looks.

Some of the items that became work staples for me have failed in quality before they should have (drapey crepe tunic). Ann Taylor & Loft have some stylish, traditional office looks but there's nothing like having new J. Crew merchandise that in colors that blend well with past J. Crew colors.
