First thoughts:
ReplyDelete1. I never thought I'd say this, but OMG STOP! These rollouts are coming so fast and furious (along with the markdowns), it's starting to require a level of dedication I just don't have. :)
2. Is that an homage to the popular Anthropologie Free Flow Tank I see?
3. I'm having a hard time telling what's new and what was part of the last rollout two weeks ago.
4. In one of the Collection lookbook pics, the model is straight up not wearing pants. Just a bodysuit and a big sweater. Hee hee!
5. FFM, they have the jacket you were interested in now (the Prince of Wales schoolboy blazer)!
$250.00 for a hoodie? $75.00 for a Red Cross tee? no wonder their stock has taken a hit. Anything that caught my attention was lost when I read the description sequins, and more sequins. I really believe J Crew (Jenna) has lost touch with their customers, they keep on selling the same old crap.
ReplyDeleteThis is honestly the very first rollout where NOTHING has interested me at all. Not a thing. I miss the old J.Crew. I agree with casual-crew: I feel like they have lost touch.

I see a few things I like, but I already have them. The Notte Tweed skirt looks like the Python skirt from 2008. The Moss Tweed skirt is much like last year's Sapphire pencil skirt, slight color differences. There are a couple pieces that interest me, I need to check my closet to make sure I don't have something very similar. No order for me today.
ReplyDeleteI was really looking forward to more winter pencil skirts, but J Crew can keep their Polyacrylic/poly/mohair/viscose/cotton and Polyacrylic/wool/silk/poly blends. Sorry, but I loathe sythetics and for their prices feel they should be using wool rich blends with some cotton or silk at most. I'll pass.
ReplyDeleteBesides, I was completely disappointed at the poor quality of the double serge skirts this year as compared to those from 2008 and 2009. Also, I am at least a little disappointed at the way my new starry donegal tweed skirt is made. It is at least wool and silk, but even my superfine cotton skirts and the 120s suiting were made better. For $118 I would expect to see slightly better fabric, a better hem and cute little details like the contrasting fabrics on the waist bands and interior piping that my older skirts have. Most of the current crop of skirts are cheaply made and not worth the high price tags they bear.
I love you J Crew, but you can do better.
Does anyone know when we get more coats? The last two rollouts seem a little sparse compared to the massive rollouts from the last couple of years. Are those usually a holiday thing?

ReplyDeleteI have a mile-long wish list, but it's all more basic stuff from the last roll out: the Dongal tweed blazer and skirt, Arrow sweater jacket, dream v-neck cardi. But OMG the Prince of Wales schoolboy...I die from fabilis. Waiting for a markdown, however. Aside from PoWSB nothing from this roll out really, really stood out.

ReplyDeleteThank goodness you posted. I am so glad I am not the only one who does not like plaid shirts. I mean my father wore them hunting and fishing and I wore them in the 80's. At my age I do not want to wear a plaid or checked shirt of any kind!
Now to look at the roll out. I was excited but the comments don't seem to postitive. Maybe I will find one special thing.
Putting on my sunglasses just in case so I don't get blinded by the sequins everyone is mentioning:)
$325 for the blazer. Not in my price range for a blazer!!!!! YIKES. JCrew is pricing me out.

ReplyDeleteKitsmommy: ITA about the starry donegal tweed skirt. I tried it on a couple weeks ago and was shocked at how thin and cheap it felt compared to other tweed/wool skirts of the season. It just felt so flimsy...
I do like the 2 new tweed pencil skirts, but at the rate j.crew is going, they'll be on sale within a month or two. I can wait for a markdown.

ReplyDeleteThen is itsn't my imagination. I think for a total of $125, it will go back. I would much rather put the money toward a new coat and see if this gets down to where I feel it is reasonable later. I want to love more of their items, but they have even failed me on a few dependable items on the last few rollouts.
I purchased a tweedy pencil from Ann Taylor this fall that is everything this one isn't: great fabric, well made, with some clever seaming that makes it interesting.
I want to love this one, but not feeling it.
Maybe I'll return and try the Milo instead...
kitsmommy, I'm curious about the Milo myself. Usually their stadium cloth is pretty nice. That's too bad about the quality of the pencil skirts - they're like, the last thing besides the blazers/coats that I can always count on at JC.

ReplyDeleteI just have a hard time paying $118 for skirts that have a poorly finished waistband like the double serges have when the fit is not wonderful either. I love the fabric and this year's colors, but last year's version was much better turned out.
I know I wouldn't even look at the tweed skirt if it were hanging in Macy's or Nordstrom (this has become my litmus test to see if I am under the crewlade influence or if it is a good solid wardrobe piece.
I paid full price for the summer superfines and feel they were a good value. Even after a full season of wear they look great and the striped waistbands are cute. It is the little things, even if other's can't see them.

I am intrigued by the Francille fray blouse-it may work with the sequin pencil skirt. I'd also like to see the Goldenrod brocade top. I like the Wool origami sheath dress, but for $198 they could have added some length-I think it will ultimately be too short. Some of the cashmere sweaters are pretty, but the colors are too muted for me, plus they're just too expensive.

I miss the days of fewer rollouts because when they happened, they had so much more new items each time. Those days were just so much more exciting.....

ReplyDelete@Lauren and Genny, ITA about plaid shirts. Here in the PNW, everyone wears them all the time, grunge-chic or no. I like a good tartan but not in a flannel shirt.
I'm always on the lookout for work dresses, but the Origami and the Silvie--ugh, that rumpled look doesn't work for me, and the Origami is too short anyway.
I have a couple of basics in my cart waiting for a promo, but nothing from this release. Where are some of those fab JC prints?
I like the smaller roll outs--more fun more often or A.D.D.--probably both.

Really bummed that I waited on the merino turtlenecks as the color/sizes I wanted are ALREADY gone!

Meh.. not in love with anything. I picked up a lovely wool herringbone blazer with leather buttons in the last warehouse sale for $20, from fall 2005, with the tags still attached. Looks similar to today's offerings, except the quality is much better. I'll continue to shop eBay and warehouse sales for older J.Crew.

ReplyDeleteI agree with casual-crew's comment that JC has lost touch with their customers. But, in watching and reading Jenna's many interviews, I've never heard her express any interest in what customers need or want. It's all about her and what *she* likes. Very disturbing IMO.
ReplyDeleteEm, I'm jealous of your warehouse find! I recently scored a JC tweed blazer on eBay ($10!) from probably early 2000's (it has the grey interior tag... I dunno when they switched to green?) but I'm going to switch the buttons out for leather ones I got off of Etsy. The fit is cute and the quality looks great - like it's never been worn. I love eBay!

The only thing that's on my radar is the Sasha peacoat. I see the new Plaid version doesn't come in Petites, so may have to stick with the non-plaid version. Loving the squash colour.
I'm so not paying $70-80 for a flannel shirt that's going to pill/shrink/be out of style in 3 months' time, cos you know that trend is being over-played and we'll all be tired of looking at it by Christmas, if you're not already. Will only pick up if on super sale.
Want some dress shirts/tops that are sophisticated/chic/easy to care for and not overembellished. Didn't see any. Anything else that interested me from the earlier roll out is already on sale or FS...
I liked the look of a couple of the thick jacket-like cardis, but then read "dream" and "cashmere" and backed right off.
Would love to see long coats, with Thinsulate lining (need one for this winter). None offered.
Hope to visit a B&M next week to try on things, and maybe pick up on the odd item that's on sale.
So no, won't be ordering anything from this rollout.
I am significantly underwhelmed as well...however, there is still hope until I visit the B&M. The website rarely has anything styled in a way that would make it appealing to me at first glance. I don't like to do too much mental layer removal to determine the potential of an item on it's own, when not layered under hairballs and shiny sequins.

ReplyDeleteITA about the old looking no different from the new. The Crewlade is weakening with things like the Francille fray blouse. Why do I want fraying edges on my beautiful silk blouse? Ugh. More sequins and then plaid. Sheesh. I'm sad to see plaid returning a la grunge.

The skirt they have pictured with the Palmilla lace pencil skirt is really the Crushed jacquard pencil skirt.... I own both, so I immediately saw the mistake when I clicked on the photo. The Palmilla looks nothing like the Crushed jacquard IRL.
ReplyDeleteThanks silver_lining! My B&M actually got it in, so I was able to try it on when I made a quick stop there on Tuesday. The size 0 was a bit snug in the shoulders but fit best at the waist. The size 2 fits well in the shoulders, but is a bit too large at the waist. It doesn't look bad when worn open, but does look boxy when buttoned up. It could easily be taken in by a tailor, but when paying that much $$$ I find it irritating that I would need to do that. (I don't have a J.Crew Credit card, so no free alterations) My in-store PS was offering her clients 20% off for making appointments, but even with the discount I decided against it. I do like the color and think it's nice over all, just not $325 nice (or even $260 for that matter). I will definitely consider it on sale though. :)
ReplyDeleteITA on the "JC can do better" sentiment. Our mall recently opened a flagship F21 store and I checked it out the other day. First thing I saw when I walked in was a poster of a model wearing the same thick black glasses as the third pic. We've see a lot of dupes at F21 but there were racks and racks of plaid shirts, embellished cardigans, boyfriend military jackets, sequined tops, blah blah blah. Style up some of the mannequins and slap hardwood floors down and it could've passed for JC. I get that everybody is taking their cues from the runway this year, and they probably assume it's a safe bet. But for the quality, at least F21's offerings seemed to be more in line with their price point.

I don't get the plaid shirt hate. I like them worn with light colored cords or white denim and heeled shoes, boots or sandals and perhaps the Sasha or other peacoat.
ReplyDeleteI have enough stripes, enough gingham and enough solid shirts to last years. I don't have plaid other than three of the plaid shirts offered this Aug/Sept. If you're going out on the weekend and want to wear a jacket, shirt and chinos or cargos, what if you don't want a heavy sweater? A cute plaid shirt and light pants and a necklace look less boring. I guess I don't associate plaid with grunge unless you style it that way. I love the new Sasha plaid peacoat.
I might be tired of plaid by the end of the season but by then, I'm tired of all winter clothes :)
I agree with silver_lining. They'd be better off if there were less frequent rollouts. Maybe the pace is accelerated because they're trying to dump stuff this year?

Elizabeth, I got the Sconset plaid shirt this summer on sale and I'm really looking forward to wearing it when it cools down here a bit ... does gingham count as plaid? 'Cause if it does, I'm a repeat offender. I think I bought 4or 5 suckered ginghams this summer and I love them all!
ReplyDeleteAn eBay find just showed up yesterday and I'm thrilled with it. Do y'all recall the large-scale plaid mini with the ivory background and the plaid in red, navy, dark green and gold? OMG I loooove it. It's from a few years ago and I've been wanting it forever. Definitely classic Americana (as someone else said) but not dowdy due to the length and the oversize scale of the plaid.
I wish the sequins, raw edges, ruffles and other over embellishments would die already.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't want the Land's End Canvas look back either. I know many JCAs love it, but it puts me to sleep. There is literally non one piece on that site that makes me drool. It is just too basic.
I just want some cleaner lines and high end fabrics back. And please, Jenna, I know you are obsessed, but stop borrowing from the boys.
i love plaid. LOVE. i'll wear three different kinds of tartan at once. the burlington tartan mini is one of my all-time favorite jcrew pieces. i am glad plaid/tartan is back at jcrew because it wasn't as prevalent the last few seasons, but, the colors are just so washed out (a few of the mens offerings are more vibrant, though, like the Vens tartan). the herringbone boy plaid shirt is nice, but not worth $80 to me.

Elaine if gingham counts as plaid, I'm right there with you. I got the gingham in almost every color but I got them on deep sale and I figure most I'll save for next spring. I missed the Sconset plaid, it was in the stores and sold out almost immediately. I don't need a ton of plaid shirts but since these are the first I've bought, I'm looking forward to the change, and I'm counting gingham and plaid as completely different :).

ReplyDeletei get that, but not every item has to be drool worthy. i am sick of jcrew items screaming jcrew (in a bad, trendy way as opposed to classic and modern). i want a few basic, durable, and unfettered pieces that i can put my own spin on with tights, vintage jewelry, shoes, hats etc. :)

ReplyDeleteAnd if I were to wear a sweater under a jacket in NC, it would have to be due to the heater being broken in the dead of winter, LOL! I can't imagine any other occasion when I'd do that. A lot of my summer JC tanks have an extended life under jackets in the fall / winter here.
Tastymoog, I feel that J Crew needs to find a happy medium between really trendy or classic or they are not going to have a customer base long term.
ReplyDeleteI have purchased from J Crew for a very long time, but it is only in the last 3 years or so that I have really found any of their offerings exciting. Before that, I would pick up a couple of basics a year. Now, I actually like a lot of their styles better, but am disgusted by the quality which seems to be getting worse by the rollout.
On the other hand, I know from experience that Land's End's customer service and quality is top notch, but there is nothing I would even buy in their current lineup. I think even their Canvas cashmere sweaters are completely boring even though they are probably very well made.
I looked at them intently a couple of weeks ago because I had a giftcard to spend and even with that could find nothing appealing. Instead, I purchased some basics for my son.
I think this J Crew rollout is terrible, but I have purchased some things recently that I love such as the Betina cami, Jenna and open merino cardis, merino sweat shirt, denim pencil skirt and navy superfine skirt. If I had a gift card to spend right now at both stores, I could find a coat or sweater at J crew to purchase that I would adore. My son would get more jeans, shirts and shoes from Land's End.
Kitsmommy, I got the Colletta coat in dark plum and love it! It's beautifully detailed and tailored. The waistband makes it very fitted and flattering.

I actually don't hate plaid (it's such a classic pattern ;D). I dislike the plaids offered by JC right now...colours are so washed out as tastymoog says. I own a number of plaid shirts that are brighter, more graphic, and more modern IMO. Something else that I realize bugs me about the JC plaid flannels are the way the shirts are cut - straight & boxy. To borrow the pattern from the boys is fine, but you have to temper it with a feminine cut, like the gingham shirts (which many of us own, some in multiples - me)from this spring/summer. That's just my 2c.

I love plaid--and mixing them together. certainly can't call plaid trendy any more than floral patterns. they have both been around for centuries.

Merino open cardi I would say is TTS. I think the S chest is 34, M is 36. I own the M and should have probably gotten a S, but I wanted to be sure I could layer a buttondown under (34c). Check it out on Lindsey B. I'm 5'2" so it's longer on me than on her although I'm not sure of her height. HTH
I love the merino open cardi and agree it does run TTS. I went with my usual small and it is a little swingy, but then I think it was meant to be (and I have little boobage ;) ) This is a great layering piece for camis,shells and dresses. I have had less luck with getting it to layer right with shirts.

ReplyDeleteThe problem with JC's plaid is they look like something you would find each year at LL Bean, Eddie Bauer or Orvis.
JC did nothing to feminize the styling. The cut and colors are just unattractive to me...AND I just don't like how they are pairing them.
It just seems as though they were lazy and uninspired in their design.
I do love a classic plaid skirt...anyone remember Pendleton LOL! NO I am not that old, I just remember my friend's mom always waiting for the Pendleton suits to go on sale. How I wish quality existed today as it was back then.
I posted some pictures of the plaid Sasha peacoat here. From the new offerings, I like the Alpaca Tirette Sweater, but want it in a different color. Gray, blah. Is the Argyle BF cardi new? If so, I like. I like the Elette Cashmere Cardi, even though I would never buy their cashmere FP. I'd like to try on the Oragami Dress, but like other said, it looks short. So irritating! Moss tweed skirt looks good, but I'll wait for sale. So many things are insanely priced.

ReplyDeleteshopwithm, I think you captured the look of the plaid better than JC did on their site, thank you! I loved the Sasha already and when I saw that plaid, it was perfect, even though, I really don't need another coat. I mean really!
ReplyDeleteI agree on some of the JC plaids, I really like the Herringbone, both colors (and the herringbone texture) but the other two, not so much. I liked the Blueberry Fog color simply because it looked so happy with off-white cargos. If anyone wants the light plum plaid, wait a month and it will be marked down majorly. As for fit, they're fine for me but I had to size down for it to be slim. I would love it if they had cut them like the Perfect shirts.
I've got one word for you.....Talbots!

ReplyDeleteI am so disappointed with the new video. It looks like a very poor video of the previous one with the adorable model and the cute french song, but the new one is nothing comparable. That video really turns me away.

ReplyDeleteLauren, there's still a Pendleton! You get the catalog as if by magic when the Talbots starts coming (from which we learn...?). A lot of the Pendleton stuff is kind of a time warp, but I can't stop looking at a black wool jackets, single-breasted, buttons to the neck, small stand collar.. Don't much like the gold buttons but they can be changed. And if they say it's wool, it will indeed be wool when it arrives. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteI am also not enthused. Unflattering, weight-adding double breasted & cropped style sweaters. Most of which are in the knit whose quality needs to be revisited--I'm talking to you, dream. The pricing for blazers is through the roof and I still think they need tailoring--the shapes are too boxy. Still more ruffles and the token, paint-stroked t-shirt. All with prices that are going no where but up..only to be marked down.

J Crew, please consider the following advice for the website:
SECTIONS:
*FINAL SALE
If you MUST have FS, at least make it reasonable off-season or items marked down that are not new. The logic is so obvious. (beating dead horse)
*SALE: items that just came out separate and not final sale.
*FULL-PRICE/PROMO: clear the confusion about promo/red-line as it is currently mixed in with full-price, on sale but not final sale and works with addl percent off promos
*COLLECTION: There's a place on the site for this outlandish schtuff. $500 suede leggings, $700 sequin harem pants, $200 sequin leggings, $700 lace camis, a poorly executed $500 vest that looks like I shaved the neighbors cat and slapped it on my sweater vest. I think it should be our prerogative to hit the collection link and check these out (and laugh.) Other than that, you just create bug-eyes and questionable thoughts about WTH is going on with you guys. People who care to spend their hard-earned cash this way will surely know where to find it. The rest (and that is the majority) don't really care..it's taking up space and totally confusing, imo.
In the end, as someone said,
they need to decide WHAT they are and to that I add, become an *improved version* that demands the price. Otherwise..just price it to sell..like all the other disposables out there. Rant over;) I love you, J Crew-lol!
Wow, the Seth plaid boy shirt, item 30163, in Blueberry Fog is far from washed out. You gotta see it irl. Also, the Herringbone plaid boy shirt item 29581 looks more saturated than the other plaids. Blogger Andrea has irl posted on her site here: theclosetchronicles_blog

ReplyDeleteI love Pendleton wools--the real deal--the shapes would have to all be recut to fit me though so I stick to the blankets. Wish JC would do a collaboration with them!
I don't think this was a big roll-out. My ps told me that the October line would be in stores next week, so I expect we'll see more then. I am interested in seeing the dot flouncette blouse IRL. And, that's it. I may change my mind once I see some of it IRL, but I'm underwhelmed. :)
ReplyDeletegem twin-I am not against and actually like some of the "outlandish" but it's the price point that sets it apart from the "regular" items that I find really confusing. The site has $500 leggings next to $70 dollar pants. That is a lot for the average J Crew customer to wrap their brain around. I think if I shopped there just once in a while, I would be a little freaked to see some of that on their site. It's alienating.

I am hopeful that the Swish Tank will work, but otherwise I'm not very taken by this rollout. I do have $800 in my cart right now though, so overall J.Crew's doing alright by me. I'm hesitant to buy any of this stuff before I try it on though due to the quality issues I've been seeing. So the catalog/online only items? Probably going to be a pass.
ReplyDeleteOT but does anyone know the name of the dress I believe it is in store only- it is black eyelet with cap short sleves, kind of layered ruffles and a ribbon around the waist.... Sorry I'm horrible at describing things! I think it was $118 but I think it will go on sale (it anyone sees it on sale in store I would love to know!!!)

@ jcrewlove, I saw the black eyelet dress on sale in my local store (Montgomery Mall, MD), I think it was 79.99 or 69.99. Very pretty!

I tried the plaid boyfriend cardigan in the store and LOVED it, probably because I buy a half-plaid/half-wool cardi/sweater at the Crew every year. The store-only stretchy black lace pencil skirt is also gorgeous, but not $178 gorgeous (or however much it was). And the goldenrod brocade top is a beautiful fabric and cut (so tired of camis). Let's hope the Crew has more tops in this shape but in lovely old-school-Crew prints. Because overall, Mickey's designers are not earning their keep.

I know these aren't new, but I really want to try the Drea dress and since so many of you have raved, my interest in the Delmy zip vest is really piqued! I bought the Silvana merino cardi and really like it, but I might return it. Hoping it goes on sale and then I could rebuy it cheaper.
ReplyDeleteRoxy, the swish tank appealed to me too. My personal shopper said it is very low cut and not wearable without a cami ;( It's not in my store so I can't try it, but she's been a good guide thus far so I'm sure she's right. Bummer.

ReplyDeleteThe only item added to my cart/wishlist is the moss tweed pencil skirt. I do love a good pencil but I agree with other posters who have noticed the quality of J.Crew pencil skirts have suffered recently. It's too bad because that was one of the things I felt they did really well and was willing to buy at full price.
ReplyDeleteThe perfect shirts also went down in quality this year. Someone posted that the amount of fabric in the seam was so small that the seam opened after one wearing. I have the Pilar paisley perfect shirt and it looks like there are a lot of loose threads, or maybe the seam is about to come undone. Not even worn yet, just noticed on first steaming. This would be a huge disappointment if the perfect shirts are no longer worth purchasing because that was another mainstay of mine from J.Crew. For me, that would just leave coats, tights and the occasional handbag that are worth the $. I should also mention some cotton sweaters are on my list but it really depends on the gauge, fabric blend, cut and price, they are never a slam dunk (but is anything now?). I'm definitely buying less overall and sticking to quality classics from whoever can offer the very best value for my money. Other than the skirt, nothing in this rollout has earned it IMO.
I'm not sure what all of the disappointing comments are for?? This is just a mini-rollout of remaining Sept items just like clockwork in case you haven't noticed by now. ;)
ReplyDeleteAs always, I think there are some fab- and some not-so-fab-items. Not all of us are going to love every item they roll out - especially when selling to and trying to appease the masses. I for one don't love all of the tees (I mean how many different types can one have??) yet I love the JC Collection items that soo many others bagn on (even if they aren't within my price range).
