Product Review: Keegan Jacket

There is a lot of interest in the Keegan Jacket (click here for an earlier post). Many of you have seen this jacket in stores, while others have been curious about its fit (including me).

"Thanks!" to Megan who shared with us her review of this jacket, as well as real life images of the jacket (which can also be found here at her blog).

I was really excited to try on the Keegan Jacket after seeing it in
the People StyleWatch issue. I live in San Diego and have several jackets from J. Crew that looked to be a similar weight and are great for the fall and winter, as well as at night in the summer. I've also fallen in love with all of the ruffle detailing J. Crew has been incorporating into their designs, so the detachable ruffle collar on this jacket made it even more desirable.

At my local store, they had the jacket in the tan color shown in the
magazine as well as white. I have a white J. Crew jacket similar to this style and shape, so I tried on the tan color. Overall, I liked this jacket but it wasn't a must-have for me. I have to say that as soon as it goes on sale, I'll probably purchase it.

I am about 5' 7.5" and about 135 pounds to give you an idea of my
shape in terms of how the jacket fits. I normally wear a size 4 in their jackets and tops and the Keegan was TTS. It hit right above my hip, so it's definitely on the shorter size, which I wasn't crazy about. I find it hard to select tops to wear under jackets that are pretty short, and I feel like I might have the same problem with this jacket. As several posters noted already, it definitely has a trapeze shape where it floats away from the body from the chest down. I preferred the jacket unbuttoned as it took away from the boxy feel a bit. The jacket also has some nice detailing at the pockets. As you can see in the close-up photo, they have a pocket that has a button flap, but underneath the pocket, there is a traditional slanted pocket, which I love as I'm a 'pocket girl'.

I also like that the collar on this jacket is a little wider - it's a
fun twist on a traditional double breasted peacoat-esque jacket. The ruffle detachable collar is a nice touch as well. It's not overwhelming or too much - just the perfect touch to add some fun to a jacket that otherwise is a great staple, but nothing outstanding.

"Thanks!" again to Megan for her great review! :)

What are your thoughts on J.Crew's new Keegan Cotton Jacket? Have you seen this jacket in person at stores already? If so, what are your thoughts? :)

  1. I wanted to love it, but it was not cute enough to spend $150+. I might revisit if it hits the FS section.

  2. I'd like to try this piece on in person to see how the shorter, boxier length works on me. :) It looks very cute!

  3. I'm not sure how I feel about this one- being of the petite variety, anything boxy tends to make me look like I weigh 50 pounds more than I actually do. I think I'll probably have to skip this one.

It looks great on Megan, though!

  4. I think that this jacket is SUPER cute and would love to own it. It needs to be reduced in price by about half for me to be serious about purchasing it. If I can get it for that, YAY, if not, I won't die without it...

  5. I agree with Jen,

Needs to be reduced to 1/2 of the current asking price for me to even consider it. Cute but not a must have, esp. in white which I will have make up on the ruffle collar in about 2 seconds and dirt on the cuffs. Tan seems to be a better choice if I had to pick. Will wait for a BIG sale on this one...

  6. I saw the Keegan in person & the ruffle/collar detail looks prettier in person than in photo's but is a pass for me. The Travel Trench, which I purchased yesterday, and the Twisted Cotton Trench are more my style, if I even have a style. :)

  7. I tried on the Keegan in White with the Bistro Pants in Stone, and the new flower tee that's brown w/small flowers across the chest. The jacket looked cute styled with these items because they fit closer to the body plus the tee was longer (hitting about mid-hip), and made it appear a little less boxy. The shape and fit of the Keegan reminds me a lot of the Andy jacket from last year. I personally like the White Keegan better then the Khaki one, but won't be purchasing because I already have several jackets with this same type of shape. :)

  8. It looks very Old Navy-ish. Not that there's anything wrong with ON (which I happen to love!), but I wouldn't pay ON prices for JC stuff.

  9. I meant to say I wouldn't pay JC prices for ON stuff! :)

  10. It doesn't matter who makes the item...it depends on the quality of that item. ON has better quality mens tees than JCrew...etc. I don't go by brand name or price...I have even seen shoddy designer items. Look to quality not make or $ (and of course FIT)

  11. I saw this on several people Saturday. It looked very cute on anyone with narrow hips and a less pronounced chest. However, it was a tough fit for a curvier gal. The boxiness and length are not flattering with any sort of hips or bust. It accentuates the boxiness of the jacket and hides any waist on the wearer.

  12. I'm a coat/ jacket person, but I walked right by this one in the store without a second glance.... I'm long waisted, so this jacket would not be an option for me!

I guess if I NEEDED a jacket, I would have gone with the Travel Trench, but my Cooper jacket from last fall is just fine!

  13. I tried it in a store and did not find it too boxy when I went 1 sz down ( 2 intead of 4). I liked khaki version more then white. Then I tried Travel Trench and liked it even more, so I ended up buying that instead.
I also like new Icon Trench, but have to wait unitll rewards come out.:)

  14. I wanted to love the Keegan but not at $150. I am petite and I tried this on at the B&M and it made me look squatty. I ended up going w/ the travel trench in Navy b/c I got it brand new off of Ebay for $51. I love the travel trench. Travel trench runs small.

  15. I hate double breasted and find this jacket totally unflattering no matter what the body-type, sorry:(

  16. I've been LIVING in my white Banana Republic trench from last spring -- truly the most versatile piece in my wardrobe. I would definitely consider the Keegan jacket in the khaki color for a change of pace from my white one (shorter and probably better for winter, especially in CA where I live) but I can't really justify a second trench right now, especially for $150. For a lower price, however, I'd probably bite.

Off topic slightly but thanks to all the JCAs who recommended the boucle scarf jacket. Mine arrived in the berry color last week and have been wearing it non-stop and literally have been showered with compliments. People have been raving about the cut, color and overall look of the jacket, which I got for $84 and free shipping. Now THAT is what I love about J. Crew and this blog!

  17. I'm not crazy about the swing jacket styling, especially if it is a shorter cut. Doesn't work on my tall frame since it will show a bit of my top and I think it looks "choppy" with the jacket, shirt peeking out, then pants/skirt.

    Pass.

Club Monaco has a plaid trenchcoat that looks interesting. I love their coats as they are nicely fitted and very stylish. Plus, the student discount is 20%.

  18. I have to admit my expectations were high for this jacket.

It's a pass for me ( it looks like a $20 jacket from forever 21)

  19. I agree with the anon who said this is a great jacket for ladies with slim hips and a smallish chest. Unfortunately, that is the opposite of me. The Keegan made me look short and wide. Reaffirmed my belief that I cannot work a double breasted jacket.
I think the quality and construction felt really good, not like something you'd find at an ultra cheap mall store

  20. I love getting all of this feedback on the jacket! I agree that it's not something I'd pay full-price for, but perhaps if it went on sale I might. As I mentioned in the post, I already have one of the jackets from last spring/summer in a lightweight cotton/peacoat shape in white, otherwise I think I'd prefer this jacket in white...

  21. Yes, in this economy I think you can find a well made, cute trench for much less $

I found two cute ones already for $70 and $75 in a couple of stores. Very well made too.

  22. I am petite and not small chested. This jacket just doesn't fit right for me and I won't buy it at any price.

The fabric is nice. Now if it's a bit longer, with a belted waist it may work... The italian poplin raincoat from last spring's collection fits my figure a lot better.

  23. I have to call it like I see it and I think this is a pass for 99% of the JCAs out there. The boxy body and short torso length would make it difficult to pull off for most body types. Let's not kid ourselves! Despite a reduction in price(final sale junkies)or a fashion magazine's "pick of the month", stay away from such clothes. You wallet will be happier in the long run and you will end up with a truly classic wardrobe that looks good on you. Trust me on this one.

  24. As a WNTW devotee, my litmus test is always "would Stacy and Clinton approve?" I have to think they would say NO to this jacket due to its boxy cut. I wonder if they read this blog? Clinton? Are you there? We need you!

  25. Thanks for the photos and review Megan! I made a comment earlier, but forgot to say thanks. :D

  26. I love the detachable ruffle. That's genius to a ruffle lover. Other than that, if you've seen one double breasted jacket for Spring, you've seen them all. This is a great update w/the ruffle, but I have my double breasted staples. Pass.

  27. I'm usually a 0 or 2 and the 2 was very tight in the shoulders...and I have very narrow shoulders!!...and big at the bottom because of the trapeze shape...not sure if I should go up to a 4...It's really cute on the hanger though
