J.Crew Email: Extra 20% Off Final Sale, Starts Today

A big "thanks!" to many of you, including Kathy, Julie, Dina, Rosie, starla729, as well as Anon at 8:18 AM, Anon at 8:23 AM & Slastena, (in this post), Anon at 9:00 AM (in this post), SuiLove (in this post), and Fluffles (in this post), who let us know about J.Crew's latest promotion.

J.Crew is offering an additional 20% off their final sale with promo code EXTRA20. This offer expires 1/18/09.

As many of you have mentioned, what is interesting about this promotion is that J.Crew sent this exclusively to J.Crew card members. Not only did J.Crew let them know first, but they are also having this offer start *today* for them, while this offer starts *tomorrow* for everyone else. After all the discussion recently about the benefits of J.Crew card members (refer here), I think this is a great perk that I hope they continue. :)

What are your thoughts on this kind of promotion? Do you think this is a good benefit for card members? :)a

  1. Eh... like someone said in another post, this is basically like getting free shipping. Not good enough for me! I want extra percent off!

This is just my way of thinking to prevent myself from buying anything else... and will fail if a double serge pencil skirt in black size 4 shows up as in stock on the website!

    ReplyDelete
  2. When I checked the code, I was able to get the % off and I am not a card holder......

    ReplyDelete
  3. Nellie - there was one yesterday and today

  4. Okay this is lame. I have a portland cardigan and a crawford blouse in by cart, I also added two perfect scoop neck tees so the total comes to 99.98 without discounts. The discount is $13, yet when I enter my code and check out the total before discount and shipping, and tax shows $101.98. WTF? It's doing something to add shipping on. I don't get it and I'm not buying it.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I agree with Nellie. This is basically like getting free shipping, which they just offered. In addition, I'm a cardholder and I didn't get this email. If it weren't for this blog, I wouldn't know about half the promotions until a day or two later. Besides the "rewards" card, there are no real benefits to having a card. I'm always the last to get emails, catalogs, etc. and I haven't recieved a lookbook since last spring (although maybe they haven't had one out). I also think it's hilarious that non-cardholders are using this code today. Good for them!!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Anon @ 1:53 - interesting, that's what I suspected. J Crew doesn't seem to be as sophisticated with their promotion codes as, say, Gap.com.

I think this was BETTER than the free shipping codes because there was no minimum! To get the equivalent of free shipping on $40 worth of stuff seems like a good deal to me. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  7. I am a "silver" card holder and I have not been getting any e-mails from them....including this one!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm with musthavejcrew -- I normally get J.Crew emails but I didn't get this one. As a cardholder, I declare this to be LAME!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ok, what is the point of this promo? As if their business isn't suffering already, now they want insult?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Could be better. Doesn't apply for full-price items, and not much of a saving with the shipping charge unless it's for a large order of sad and tired FS items that are already much picked over. No thanks, I'll pass and spend my hard-earned money on the spring collection.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Rosie's point is only good if you are not a student or educator.

Then if you are spending $100 or $150 which I normally do getting free shipping AND 15% off is a better deal than this current promo.

I did the math on my 3 orders from the past week and a half and I saved much more...

I did send and email about applying the 15% to the 20% and was told NO. I just don't get it JCRew...Why is it OK with free shipping but not extra percents off? This is what TWO customer service reps said as well as my online PS ...so 3 sources confirm this.

This seem to be correct for the past 6 weeks with my orders and the discounts so from now on, for me...as a teacher, it is free shipping and my discount or NOTHING. Will be passing on this and all future % offs that are not of a higher amount than say 20%

    ReplyDelete
  12. I got free shipping with the codes posted here for my last 11 orders, and saved so much more when I also could apply my educator's discount of 15%. So essentially I had 15% off AND free shipping. And that works for full price items too. This new code is pathetic!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm very happy with the discount. I used it on sale items that were already marked down considerably, so I think the value is even better.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anon @ 2:29 - I have not been allowed to combine my educator's discount in recent months with any promo, including free shipping, online or in store.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm a cardholder and I haven't received this email-is 20% off such a big deal for JCrew that they send it randomly to a select few?

I'm not surprised at all to be honest :(

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don't see how this sad 20% off code for FS items only will get me to spend money on old, picked over inventory that's taking up too much room in the JC warehouse, especially with the Spring collection awaiting me with fresh palettes and styles.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm a cardholder and didn't receive the email either... thankfully I get the codes here! I got the tartine and a merino turtleneck for cheap!

    ReplyDelete
  18. rosie: I had no problems applying the 15% teacher discount on my last 15 orders that used the free shippinng codes. No questions asked by CS and no one hesitated a second. You shd call again!

    ReplyDelete
  19. oh, also- I received a letter informing me I am a "silver" cardholder now about a month ago. I haven't received my card yet !!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Not really a stellar promotion IMO, but perhaps they will restock the website with some long-forgotten items. There are a couple I am keeping my out for so I'll keep checking.

    Better than nothing!

    ReplyDelete
  21. OT: Has anyone seen Dusty Rose shoes - either the patent pumps or spectators in the stores?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have also been given the student discount on my orders with free shipping. Only once did a SA say "one time only courtesy". Today I ordered a couple of cardigans, cheap! They will not apply student discount with %off code except in store.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I just used this promotion code, and I didn't use a J.Crew card...

    ReplyDelete
  24. I haven't been able to get my student discount with free shipping, nor with the holidays discounts (since they had the policy of not combining two offers). In those cases JCrew has applied whatever offer gives me more savings, but they do not accumulate the discounts anymore.
Has anyone else been able to use free shipping and student discount?
    Nobelle.

  25. I'm passing. I have two pairs of boots in my shopping cart--repeats of boots I purchased during pre-Christmas promos, but in different colors. After applying the discount and adding $18.50 for shipping, I would be paying way, way more than I did in December. That's crazy enough to keep me from checking out!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I haven't been able to apply my teacher discount with free shipping. I asked during the last frees shipping promo and was told no.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anon at 2:35 PM: Thanks for your reply. I just called CS and tried. The girl on the phone wanted to help me and apply the student discount. She said I should be able to combine the too. However, she was not able to do that because the person who worked on my order is above her and she could not do the overwrite. She said next time I should call and place the entire order over the phone to get the discount. And placing orders over the phone is inconvenient for me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I never ask for my student discount to be applied to online orders. I have a hard enough time trying to get them to apply it at the B&Ms. I have 5 B&Ms within 30 minutes of me and some apply the student discount on top of sale and others don't. I have actually gone into one of the B&Ms and seen something and had them tell they will not apply the student discount, bought the item, taken it to another B&M and returned it and rebought it using my student discount. Now that J Crew has imposed FS I don't really buy too much online.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It is Final Sale I will pass.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It is my understanding from my online PS and customer service reps (several) that when ordering online you can only combine free shipping and educator's/student discount.

This makes the % off not a good deal if you are one of the above types of people.

I got an explanation of why this is so in an email from CS and my PS but in essence it is a bunch of BS and crap!

I can only order online--no store. I think JCrew is really just jerking us around with all this yes and no combining business.

I sent them an email telling them so just now and how disappointed I am in their business practices.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I ordered today by calling in my online order and was able to get 20% and free shipping, though they wouldn't give me the educators discount too. I got three cardigans, two ecole jkts and cords for under $200--not bad for me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I just placed an order with Dorothy Perkins. (store in the UK and ships international to US as well) Anyway, my POINT IS: I entered free shipping code and % off code all online: TWO CODES both easily applied to my order right before my eyes...It was wonderful and easy. It is possible but JCrew chooses to make our online shopping experiences HARD in my opinion. I just ordered two coats--vintage heart coat and Damson coat plus a silk jacket and 3 pairs of socks in a matter of seconds!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Quick question - I just received a Final Sale order I placed about two weeks ago and noticed on my receipt that it doesn't note that any of the items are in fact final sale. Has this been happening for anyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I really wish they would offer another promotion like TURKEY or HOHOHO...then I would consider purchasing. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Megan,

Good for you. Return the stuff if you need to!

Several others on this blog have mentioned the same thing happening to them.

Do the bags sale final sale? If so, don't use them when returning:)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't know how anyone is applying free shipping codes with an educator's discount, but I want in on it. I have not been able to do it, which has kept me from ordering with J Crew.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am so annoyed with J.Crew right now. I placed an order last Wednesday, and as of today at 3:30 pm the status is still "released". I called on Friday, and the rep assured me that it would shipped out by Monday. I called again this morning, and the rep assured me that it would be sent out this afternoon. Well, I'm still waiting! I have never waited this long for them to send out a package. They've already cancelled one item, and I'm afraid they will cancel the others!

    ReplyDelete
  38. rosie: I must have called three differnt CS reps on my last order and all said they could not apply both free shipping and an educator's discount.

What I now realize may be the difference is that they can apply a discount when it's a specific sale- like 20% off Final Sale items.

if anyone gets to use both discounts, it'd be great to share how to get ahold of that specific rep so we could all get the deal :O)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anon @ 3:33 - They don't say final sale on them. I'm actually really happy about this because one of the items I purchases are the Lulu peep-toe heels in 11 (I'm between a 10 and 11) and they are almost an inch too long. I was so surprised because their 11s are usually a tad big, but the 10s are always too small, so I thought they'd be fine. I almost didn't want to say anything on here so that J. Crew doesn't start paying closer attention to it - don't want to ruin things for the other shoppers!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Uhm, over the last 2 weeks, I called 11 times - 11 orders - and each time I didn't have any problems applying the teacher's discount to my online orders that used the free shipping codes. It must be 11 different CS reps. It was as random as that.

I just called this morning about an order I placed yesterday, and each time it was a breeze. I'm not sure why some JCAs have problems applying the teacher discount with the free shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  41. kat: Whenever there's a low inventory item, or cancelled item, it delays the shipping. It's almost like they are waiting to see if an item pops up in the warehouse before writing it off as unavailable. Frustrating!

OT, I placed three orders on Saturday morning and they stayed "submitted" until I called CS on Monday. They had to manually release the orders because they were stuck. Not shipping today I figure.

    Hope your order ships soon.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Megan, I found the lulus to run very large as well. I tried on the 10 in the store and they were just a tiny bit too tight, but when I got the 11s they were falling off my feet. I pretty much wear an 11 in all other j.crew shoes (though the perfect pumps and flats are way small). I did get the lulus for a decent price so I put in 2 inserts--one for ball of foot to prevent sliding forward and one in the heel to prevent slipping off the back. They seem to be OK like this. However if I had paid full price I would have returned them rather than go through this effort.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I found the Lulu to be smaller than usual. I got the metallic flat and the tulip peeptoes in 7 but wished I had gotten 7.5.

    ReplyDelete
  44. anon @ 3:43

That's great news! Too bad there is a min on the Free Shipping or I would try to use the Free Shipping+ educators discount since i doubt I would be able to get Free Ship+ 20% off

I wish the 20% was an automatic

    ReplyDelete
  45. I just bought the dream simone cardigan navy in large via CS over the phone. They gave me free shipping and the extra 20% off! I got one of the last 3 in my size and color for $63.00 :)
I just called and asked and they honored my request. LOVE JCREW! (I'm not even a card holder)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm so confused! Which cardholders DID get this email?!? I didn't and it sounds like many of you didn't either.

Anywho, I'm with FFM. I would be much more likely to order with a TURKEY or HOHOHO type promotion. It's tempting and I have a few things in my cart just waiting (or waiting to sell out!), but I think I can hold out.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Gwen,

What do you mean? You called and said, "I want to order a sweater? Can I have free shipping and 20% off?" and they said YES!

    ReplyDelete
  48. While this is not the greatest offer out there, it worked for me because I was able to place a small order, and basically saved on the shipping costs plus a few dollars. At least I didn't have to meet a $150 minimum!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Gwen: You must have oodles of charm!! I called after reading your post, and they said NO.

    ReplyDelete
  50. OT: The Maggie shimmer peacock jacket popped up again at $90. Does anyone have this? Do you love it? What are the colors IRL? Do you wear it frequently (e.g. not just around holidays)? Sizing: I have the Bella Herringbone from last year in a size 4--does the Maggie fit the same? I thought about it before Xmas, but held off. Now it's there again, tempting me.

    ReplyDelete
  51. OT- I know this has been adressed before but can't seem to find the post- what to do when you can't seem to "track down" your tracking number? My tracking number doesn't register with UPS/USPS/FEDEX... thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thanks Anon at 3:51 PM! I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I really wanted the items for this weekend since I'm going out of town, but I suppose it will be a nice surprise when I return. Heh, if it doesn't get cancelled.

Also, that last time I spoke with a rep on the phone I was told that they are absolutely not allowed to combine discounts. I find this curious as several people have already had luck doing this, and I myself have have success with it in the past. Talk about inconsistency, J.Crew!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Gwen: was your order over the $150 minimum to get the free shipping?

Half the things i looked @ today while on lunch break at work are gone now. :(

    ReplyDelete
  54. I mentioned this on a previous post but I'll post it again in case it helps someone.

I had an order in "released" status for a several days. A lot of the items in my order had been listed as sold out, then later reappeared on the website so I was excited to get them on my order. When I called the CS told me that they were trying to locate all the items for me before shipping out. I assumed that meant that maybe they were waiting another day or two for restocking in the hopes that the items would show up.

Eventually everything shipped except one double-serge pencil skirt. There were over 10 items in the order and all but two were previously sold out items.

Call CS if your order is in "released" status for a few days and ask them if they are waiting to locate an item. Sometimes it may be better to wait and get your choices rather than demand immediate shipping "as is" and be shorted.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Again and again J.Crew is telling shoppers they can't combine discounts, but all it takes is for one person to whine enough to get an exception, and then post on here about it. Right now, you get 20% off. Use it, or don't. But honestly, I'm so sick of reading about how J.Crew won't also apply the educator discount, even though FOR MONTHS now I've been reading how that is the policy. Try to consider all of us who work EXTREMELY HARD and don't get a special discount, please. And yeah, I don't doubt this will draw the ire of some, but frankly, like Rhett, I don't give a damn.

    ReplyDelete
  56. JCrewAdorer: They'll be back, trust me.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Anon at 4:06 -- if your tracking number doesn't seem to be valid with UPS, FedEx, or USPS, it could mean that the shipper didn't scan it correctly or at all, so it won't be in the tracking system even though it's still being shipped. It could also mean that J. Crew has posted a completely random (and wrong) number as your tracking number. I've had both scenarios happen to me, and the package has always arrived anyway. A third possibility is that either J. Crew or the shipper screwed up, and your package is lost forever. That's happened to a few people on JCA.

If you're worried, you might try calling CS to see if they have any more information than your account page shows. If they tell you that your package is on its way though, they'll also likely tell you that you have to wait 7 days from the ship date to make sure it did or didn't arrive before they can do anything about it. Hope your package makes it!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yay J.Crew!

Another reason to be a cardmember, thank you for listening!!!

    Athena

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh, how I long for the days when the extra percent off sale items was automatically applied when you placed the items in your bag, and then you could use a free shipping code on top of it.

ACass, your cat in your picture is soo cute! Also, I am glad to finally hear from others with double digit shoe sizes. Too bad JC doesn't have 10.5.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Anon@4:16 There is no need to be bitter. I also have to read about stuff unrelated to my concerns, but that's part of *sharing*. Students and teacher also work VERY HARD, and good for them if they can get a discount! I don't mind.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I mean Cass, not ACass... oops.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm not against the educator discount, but it's become very clear over the past several months that it cannot be combined with other offers, until, that is, one person whines enough, gets an exception, and then everyone wants it. That's what I'm tired of reading about. Stop being greedy - you get a discount on regular price stuff that the rest of us don't.

I didn't say, either, that teachers don't work hard, although let's not kid ourselves, the U.S. is (unfortunately) full of lazy teachers who only care about getting tenure (and what a joke that is).

    ReplyDelete
  63. I am a teacher, but not a lazy one. I don't think it's fair to lump all US teachers into a lazy category. While I do work with some who shouldn't be teaching, I work with many who are great at what they do and spend extra time on grading papers, working with students, etc. Until you've tried walking in a teacher's shoes, don't condemn them.

I don't care what their policy is, I just want consistency. I don't think that's too much to ask for.

    ReplyDelete
  64. kitchy 7- thanks for the insight! My J Crew history thus far has been so unblemished, stands to reason I'm due for some paranormal J Crew moments

    ReplyDelete
  65. Well, I cannot afford to buy J Crew when it's full price- even with a 15%. So the only time I look to try and use my discount is when it comes to items all ready on sale.

It's hard to try and keep up with a professional dress code when I make barely above poverty level.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Regarding your tracking number not showing in the UPS/FedX/USPS system. I've noticed recently that mine doesn't show up for a few days and then it magically does. I believe that the JC warehouse prints the label, but the package may not be picked up by UPS for a few days. Don't worry....keep clicking on the link and it should show up within a day or two. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  67. math teacher, I did not say all teachers are lazy. But as you yourself admitted, there are lazy ones out there. Good ones, too, certainly.

My point is: I do think J.Crew has been consistent. But all it takes is one exception, and then everyone wants it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anon: If you go on that line, you could also say that the U.S. is full of lazy lawyers/engineers/cleaning ladies who only care about making money. The teachers' discount is a show of appreciation to teachers who are in a traditionally lowly-paid profession that does not commensurate with the efforts/years it takes to complete an education to be a teacher. The student discount is in place for a reason too. You don't hear about lawyers' discount or janitors' discount, do you?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hey JCrew, if you really want to entice cardholders...how about free shipping plus the 20% for cardholders? Condsidering non-card holders are freely using the 20% code today...it's not really a perk for us.

    ReplyDelete
  70. It's unfair to say that teachers are lazy. I could also make the same criticism about every single other profession. Tell me your profession, and I can say the same about you.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anon, while I agree that some teachers are lazy, I think it's wrong to say the U.S. is FULL of lazy teachers. And, really, tenure is not a big deal in the education field. Maybe in a prestigious college, but high school? Tenure doesn't really exist where I teach.

    ReplyDelete
  72. True that there are lazy lawyers/engineers/cleaning ladies, however, none of them get tenure.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Anon: I think you should tread carefully here. This is a hotbed of teachers and students, who are all into the JC style of preppiness. It's suicidal to go to a blog full of engineers and say "engineers are lazy" and then backtrack by saying not all of them, of course.

If you're really concerned about JC's inconsistency policies, say so. Don't attack a profession.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Again: I never said ALL teachers are lazy. Please read carefully if you're going to respond.

It is, however, a widespread problem, one made worse by tenure (something that isn't granted to doctors, pilots, surgeons or other people into whom we actually place our lives, if only briefly). But that's for a different blog. I'll just finish up by saying I think it's nice of J.Crew to offer an educator's discount, it's very clearly not to be combined with other offers, so please make a note of it.

And now to all: Have an enriching day.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Even within the teaching profession, tenure is a luxury open to a small handful. And the tenure process is such a stringent one that not even 1/3 of professors make it eventually. If you mean lazy, you mean lazy in grading your half-baked work? There are so many components to tenure, and most importantly you still need to work hard at research and publish a goddamn amount. Dont even get me started!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I sent customer service an email today and asked why, as a cardholder, I didn't receive the email about the promotion "for cardholders". I was told I needed to go on the JCrew website and "sign up for promotional emails". Oh, that's it? Gee, thanks, I haven't tried that 50 times already.

I also asked why they promote "look books" as a benefit of the card (but don't actually send them out) and was told:
"We apologize that you were misinformed about our J.Crew Look Books. We
do not give these books out to customers. We keep them in our retail
stores for customers to view. We regret any disappointment."

Oh, really? How was it that I was misinformed? Oh, right, because your credit card pamphlet said I would get Look Books.

Sorry, I think I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today! The response from them just really ticked me off. I feel like they respond like they are writing to a five-year-old!

    Annnd, I'm done venting.

    ReplyDelete
  77. smarty: Not giving out the Look Book? - yet another example of J.C. policy inconsistencies.

    ReplyDelete
  78. J.CrewAdorer - have you ever tried consignment or vintage shops? You don't have to look like you follow the latest trends to be professional. If you're really on a tight budget, consignment is a great way to add to your wardrobe.

I don't have consignment shops close to me but I used to pop into the local consignment twice a week and found many, many wonderful and low-priced items. I bought an Escada merino wool skirt in pristine condition for $7 once! It helps to go often as inventory can turn over quickly with new arrivals, and once you're familiar with what you've seen, you can pass them over and just look at the new stuff and it won't take so much time.

    Maybe you do this already...

    ReplyDelete
  79. ^That's exactly what I wrote back and told them.

    So.freaking.annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think it's fair to give a discount to students, who are usually strapped for cash, but not teachers. Why single out one group of professionals and not the rest of us?

And as for the person who mentioned teachers work overtime, welcome to the real, adult world. Who doesn't?!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I don't go to consignment shops but i help support our local Salvation Army thrift shop. On Wed. they have 50% off. So I get deals on books and clothes. I don't go crazy, and I only go during the summer when out of school, and Wed. when we are out of school.

    ReplyDelete
  82. smarty: The last time I was on sign JC site within the last hour a popup screen came up asking me to signup again for the emails. I had already signed up months ago but stopped receiving them since Christmas so maybe there is another system glitch and we have to sign up again.

    ReplyDelete
  83. RE: educator's discount

I was wondering when the fight of the day would pop up.

    ReplyDelete
  84. People are not complaining about the educators/student discount it's the inconsistency with which it is applied.

Standard policy that is enforced consistently--this issue will disappear!

JCrew really needs to get its act together. I often don't place orders b/c I don't know if the discount will be applied or not and don't want to hassle...

    ReplyDelete
  85. "And as for the person who mentioned teachers work overtime, welcome to the real, adult world. Who doesn't?!"

    No kidding. Good point.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I am a teacher. All this talk about lazy teachers has me angry because I hear from everyone how "lucky" I am (summers off, tenure, blah, blah, blah). Why, please tell me, is there a nationwide shortage of teachers? If it is such an easy profession, why don't others want to do it? Easy. Walk a mile in our shoes, and you'll know why.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Anonymous people complaining about teachers...just read the mindless blog that has a connection on this sites main page.

It is just a small sampling of the creepiness that teachers deal with on a daily basis.

The teacher on this site had her finace spend a day with her (he is a lawyer) and he told her her job is definitely harder.

Unless you spend a day with a teacher on a field trip as well as a day in the classroom (esp. nearing holidays) DO NOT JUDGE. You have no clue.

  88. J.CrewAdorer, you should really try consignment if you can find a good one close by. With the downturn in the economy there are sure to be some women looking to purge their closets for extra cash.

Usually, consignment will sell items and give the consigner ~45% of the sale price so they aren't always concerned about the sale price and will mark items down or have promotions. A lot of places will only take seasonal merchandise (right now would be spring/summer stuff coming in) and will call the owner to pick up their things that have not sold once we move into the next season. It's nice because you don't have to go through reams of off-season merchandise.

If you get to know the staff, they will look out for you and let you know about items you may like because they really want your business and they are often the owners.

I'm not saying don't buy J.Crew when you get a deal, just suggesting that there are other ways to build your wardrobe on the cheap. Sally Ann is definitely a good way too.

  89. Right, because all other professions are easy, and no one else has creeps to deal with. Get a clue.

  91. Anon 5:07 and 5:08 - Granted, teaching may be a tough gig, but you could say the same about a lot of careers. I think it will only get more stressful for all of us in the coming year as employers are forced to do more with less and the demands escalate.

Maybe we could give each other a little moral support and have some fun chatting about clothes.

  92. OT: I'm selling my Silk Dupioni skirt in champagne, Size 0 (item number 99975).
I already have one in silver in P0, and really liked it, so I ordered this champagne one in regular size (P0 was sold out). But it ended up being too long for me.

I'm selling if for $50, including shipping. If you are interested, please e-mail me at nerdycrew@gmail.com

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Not enough for me if I still have to pay shipping. I'd rather take my chances at the B&M, where at least I get the additional % off, and no shipping charge, if I find something I like.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Eh. I have found better deals in the stores. For example, on my last trip, I got:
    1. Sherpa-lined goosedown puffer jacket in white, $35.69 (originally 178)
    2. Patent belt in dusty rose, $4.16 (originally 35)
    3. Patent spectators in dusty rose, $47.59 (originally 228)
    4. Sequin crest t-shirt in grey, $5.94 (originally 45)
    5. Ava dress in navy, $35.69 (originally 98)

If not for the bathing suit that I liked being online only, I would never buy from jcrew.com. (And I bought the suit using free shipping and with my student discount.)

  96. I understand J. Crew's policy behind the educator discount -- underpaid profession and all that. But I also wonder if it's a brilliant marketing stroke. Dress educators in J. Crew and (hopefully) inspire their students to do the same as they grow up? Hook them while they're young and impressionable? If that's part of J. Crew's calculus, genius.

  97. It's funny that all us card holders were bemoaning the lack of any real benefits from it. I am temped to take advantage of just a few more items that I have been watching.

P.S. I'm all in favor of the Educator discount. They do a lot of hard work, with massive responsibility (educating our young people), for not a lot of pay, relatively.

  101. nellie, thanks for the compliment on my cat. ;)

Yep, it sucks not to have the 10.5 option. Some shoe brands that do have 10.5 are cole haan, nine west, enzo angiolini, bandolino, and anne klein.

  102. What color top 89575 would look good with the Martinque bottoms- 95415?
Not too sure about J Crews sizing but cannot pass up on a $20 J Crew swimsuit. If it doesntfit, I hope to pass along to someone else at the same savings.

  103. Hi there! I purchased the Jamie bag this past Friday for 249. I just called in asking if I could apply the extra 20% off and she said NO. =( She said it's not a final sale item which I'm confused about.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Okay! Thought so. I need a swim top that doesnt tie around the neck. These tops kill my neck b/c I am busty and the weight pulls on my neck.
Do the suits run larger or TTS?

    ReplyDelete
  109. I'd say they run TTS. This was my first time buying JC swim pieces, and I'm very pleased with the quality (esp for the $9.99 apiece price).

    ReplyDelete
  110. The other bottoms I was considering were the Flamenco dot, but they are low rise.
Do you think the solid colors match up? There are three shades of blue (navy, brillant, rich aqua) and only the one (neon fuchsia) for the top.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I size up in all my swim suits from Jcrew. I normally wear a 2. My one-piece is a size 4, and I bought a wide-band halter and the fold-over shorts in a M (although I probably could fit in the S).

    ReplyDelete
  112. No sizing up available here. :( Maybe I'll have to pass. Wish it wasn't FS

    ReplyDelete
  113. Just realized it says "fits A/B cups best". Wish there was a way to modify swim suits.

Maybe I could buy two and sew them together....j/k

  115. Does anyone know how the Metallic Marie Houndstooth jacket fits? F/S is kind of bad not seeing/trying an expensive item before you buy it. Please anyone??

    ReplyDelete
  116. The items I wanted are gone too :( and now I am browsing the new swimsuits. I have never purchased or seen any JC swimsuits in person so my question is if you think I could wear this as a regular top or the material is apparently too swimsuity?

    http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/swim/solids/PRDOVR~10271/10271.jsp

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  117. J.CrewAdorer - I have at least a dozen J.Crew swimsuits - all two piece - and they fit pretty much true to size. They are good quality pieces and the first few I bought were all FS so I had to mix and match a bit.

I would recommend the following colors to go with the Martinique print, in my order of preference:

    brillinant blue
    navy
    chocolate
    white
    (maybe) neon fuschia

I have a sweater in this print and the green is really a mossy green, like a subdued bronzed ochre, if that makes any sense. The kelly green does not go well, IMO. There is some periwinkle blue in the pattern so blues would work and chocolate would also work with the moss and white would pick up the background.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Hi Carolji, I do not know about the fit of the Metallic Marie Houndstooth jacket but if it is made of the same fabric as in the Metallic Pheobe Houndstooth, it would be very "stiff". The fabric is very stiff and I did not like how I felt my movements were restrained in the Pheobe. I have to admit that is a very pretty and unique weave though!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Yeah, I didnt go with it because I could not size up.
How long after you place an order do you have to cancel?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Chiffon Cupcake - the swimsuits look every bit a swimsuit. If you wore it as a top, you would not be fooling anyone.

Many month ago the educator discount (and some unfortunate teacher-bashing--we are such an easy target!) became the subject of this blog. I am a teacher, and because of Alexis and JCA became aware of the teacher discount. It has definitely increased my spending at JC and I think it's a nice way to recognize teachers and students. However, I have to agree with you that it's a very calculated marketing strategy, and I remarked on it when it came up before. Whenever my students notice an outfit I'm wearing and I tell them it's J.Crew, it's amazing advertising for the brand. Teenagers are such an economic force that it's just smart business sense for the company to want to encourage both teachers and their students to shop at J.Crew. I think it's brilliant marketing, whatever you feel about teachers.

    ReplyDelete
  122. J.Crew Adorer the martinique bottoms are low rise as well. If you want higher rise, try the brief 62773.

I don't know how long you have to cancel the order, I have tried to cancel the next day and was told it had already shipped, which seemed suspect to me.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  127. Go to the stores, they are offering 30% off to everyone on all sale items!

    ReplyDelete
  128. JCrewAdorer, hahaha, that is hilarious. I make sure all the JC/ JC related windows are closed or minimized whenever I see my husband coming to me!!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Chiffon Cupcake, that is a lovely top. One thing about JC swimsuits is that the stitching is zig-zag on the facing side to prevent tearing the nylon fabric. This is a sign of quality, a straight stitch would eventually pull and make a tear, a lot of suits have two rows of straight stitches. Look at the closeups of the front and back stitching and you will see what I mean.

The nylon fabric and zig-zag stitching could give it away that this is a swim top. Depends where you wear it I guess, if people pay close attention to detail. If I saw it, I'd know. But then, I have a lot of swimwear of many brands and I am a detail person. But, even knowing, I wouldn't care. As long as you weren't one of my staff. ;)

I got the metallic houndstooth jacket in size 0, It fits well, I also got the marie in the double cloth in P2 and it fits the same except the metallic marie has looser sleeves. I'm not sure if since the other one is a P2 the sleeves are tighter or its just a diff fit on the metallic marie. BUT I dont think the fabric is stiff at all its soft feeling. I was surprised since I expected something heavy and rought, but its a pretty light fabric and softer than you'd think

    ReplyDelete
  131. Thanks, Anon @ 7:48 for the professional info! You are right. I just took a look at my swimsuit and saw those zig-zigs! Oh, I so would not wear that to work. For $55, I am probably better off investing in a real top!

    ReplyDelete
  132. Chiffon Cupcake, Victoria's Secret has some bra tops that are very similar. I know it is not the same quality as J.Crew, but it may fill a need for you. They are having huge sales online right now as well.

  136. Sorry I'm posting this again, but I fear it may have gotten lost in the Educator Discount fiasco.

  137. Strange...

I called up JCrew to follow up on the status of an order and while I was at it, mentioned that I hadn't received the 20% promo email even though I'm a card member...

...and the CS denied there was even a promotion going on!

    Has anyone else experienced this?

I double-checked the date of this post just to make sure I wasn't imagining things!

  144. I just used my regular non-jcrew credit card and used the extra20 code and it worked.
Question for the "educators"-- I didn't think I fit into that category, but I'm an assistant professor- do you think I can get the educator discount? how do you prove you are an educator?

    ReplyDelete
  145. here is how I got the free shipping and 20% off.
I had a few previous orders that were screwed up for one reason or another. I called CS and said that I was interested in purchasing this simone cardigan but I wanted free shipping to compensate me for my last order that was canceled. I have quite a few of those canceled orders in the past so they didn't need to look to far. She said no prob and would waive the shipping due to the past problem. I then mentioned that I heard about a 20% off code being used and she applied that to the order as well. Sometimes when you ask for a favor you need a little ammo in your corner.
As far as the teacher comments go..
I wanted to go to school for education and decided to intern with an elementary school in college for a while. I decided that being a Police Officer was easier and that is what I have been doing for 6 years. Give the teachers a damn discount...They put up with bad parenting skills and rude children all day. I'll take the bad guys and guns anyday over that....

    ReplyDelete
  146. ldc: To get the educator discount, you need to present a valid school i.d. at the B&M, or if you are ordering online, an e-mail account at a school (the process for having JC apply it to an on-line order involves sending an e-mail to JC from that address).

My sis is a lecturer at a university and she gets the discount at our B&M and on-line. So I imagine an assistant professor would qualify too. (You would be advertising to a prime market!!)

    ReplyDelete
  147. Mary -- interesting! I'm just cynical enough, maybe I should become a marketer. :) But I believe it. Back in high school and college, I definitely noticed what my educators wore. Not a single one of them dressed in anything I would ever wear, but then again, the only teacher I ever had under the age of 40 was a male. My style inspirations had to come from fellow students and TV shows instead (ha!). My ex is a high school teacher, and I always made sure he looked J. Crew catalog-ready. And you know what? His students reacted very well to it. It was like instant credibility.

    ReplyDelete
  148. casual crew: Thanks for the heads up. I block pop-ups, so maybe I need to enter my email address one more time. Can't hurt to try :)

twiga: I went to the local B&M today, no extra 20% off. Same 30% off as before :(

    ReplyDelete
  149. ldc..you qualify for the discount. I would say as an assistant professor you are definitely teaching!! I am a director at a college and teach occasionally. I get the discount and didn't ever show an id since I order exclusively online. All I did was give my work address (edu) and mentioned the teaching part of my job! Just show your college id or a business card when you go into the B&M.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Anon @ 8:20 - correct, no asterisks next to any of the items, even though they were all listed as final sale on the Web site. I'm thrilled because two of the three items I ordered don't fit, but I'm not sure if this is just a fluke.

I'm also a J. Crew credit card holder and didn't receive the email for 20% off final sale...

    ReplyDelete
  151. Regarding the Marie metallic houndstooth coat:

I was in love with this online, but when I saw it in my B&M I did not care for the quality of the fabric. Very flimsy and the threads were sort of loosely woven. Tried it on anyway and I felt like a baked potato in it. $425 is outrageous! I don't know what the sale price is, but be careful. Maybe the one I saw was an exception, but I was really disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Yes, sometimes seeing an item in a store can be an eye-opener. I thought I wanted the golden roses skirt, but I just saw one in a store & the material was stiff and cheap looking.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Kate -- I don't have the peacock jacket, but I do have the peacock skirt. The colors are white, green (looks like blade green), lavender, bright pink (looks like bright rhubarb), and yellow (could easily be worn with honey glaze or pumpkin), and it has silver threads running throughout.

I can't comment on the fit, but I think ladolcevita has it. Maybe she can comment?

Finally, here are some ideas of what it might go with. From FFM:
    * Look 1
    * Look 2

    And from me:
    * Dressy 1
    * Dressy 2
    * Dressy 3
    * Casual

The details are great and the fit is amazing. I am now really sad that I didn't order the Grey too:(( Now I need to check out all of FFM's sets with the Maggie so I can figure out how to wear it tomorrow!
